    Such an interesting period in history, where you can see soldiers wielding early firearms, bows, crossbows, swords, axes and pikes at the same time.

      Plenty of Hollywood movies have soldiers wearing helmets. What an odd thing to bitch about. And this is a series not a movie. And why would anyone make a movie set in that century on a battlefield with soldiers not wearing their helmets. And saying that. Couple of those guys were NOT wearing helmets. Be consistent man.

    • @karl5438
      @karl5438 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@willthorson4543 its typical for movies(Hollywood movies included) to have characters remove their helmets during combat for one reason or another due to it being difficult to show the emotion of a character while they have a full plate helmet on thus it has become a well known joke to poke fun at the logic of Hollywood(as they are the most well known) so in short its a joke you don't need to take it serious just keep scrolling.

    I remember reading about Charles the Bold’s wars against the Swiss in some history/war magazine I bought somewhere. I think I was in my early 20s... never heard of him before then, but I found the whole thing very interesting.

    • @ADobbin1
      @ADobbin1 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yeah it was the swiss he died fighting but this series suggests at the beginning here he died fighting the french. The swiss were known to not take prisoners of people who invaded them. They actually killed one of the holy roman emperors too even though he tried to surrender.

    • @jurgbangerter1023
      @jurgbangerter1023 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ADobbin1 Duke Charles the Bold was actually a complete coward and had let his troops massacre the Belgium Town of Dinant with 20'000 Civilians. Before the first battle against the Swiss in Grandson he had assured the Swiss garrison of 500 safe conduct but then broke word and hanged and drowned them in the Lake on Neuchatel. The Swiss were furious and therefore no quarter was given after the battle of Grandson during which Charles the Bold fled and left his army to die same as year later in Môrat where again the Swiss peasants defeated his knight army. In France in Nancy the French king had paid Gold to the Swiss to finish his cousin Charles the Bold off which happened. German emperor Maximillian I also made the huge mistake trying to revenge his father in law's death and attacked the Swiss to retake the lost Burgundian territories from the Swiss. The sold called Swiss-Swabian wars resulted in that the Swiss destroyed several German knight armies, one German knight army even fled when the Swiss arrived onto the battlefield. As the Swiss devastated Bavaria-Swabia and Vorarlberg and also attacked Tyrol, the emperor Maximillian pleaded the Swiss for peace which completely severed all ties with the Holy Roman German empire for the Swiss. So both Dukes of Burgundy Charles the Bold (coward)and his son in law Maximillian I broke on the Swiss Confederacy as had done so many Valois and von Habsburgs before.

      @@jurgbangerter1023 Man mag ja Karl dem Kühnen einiges vorwerfen, aber ein "Feigling" war er mit Sicherheit nicht. Davon zeugt schon sein ritterlicher Tod in der Schlacht von Nancy 1477. Es ist eben so falsch hier zu behaupten, er habe der schweizer Besatzung (ein Kontingent der Stadt Bern) der Burg von Grandson freies Geleit zugesagt. Dergleichen ist nie geschehen. Sie kapitulierten auf Gnade oder Ungnade. Sie wurden exekutiert. Das war damals oft an der Tagesordnung, wenn sich Verteidiger einer Stadt oder Burg nicht auf Aufforderung ergaben und Widerstand leisteten. Auch war Grandson kein schweizer Gebiet. Es gehörte zum Waadtland, welches dann von den Schweizern annektiert wurde.
      "...deshalb wurde nach der Schlacht von Grandson kein Pardon gegeben." Eine Aussage die auch wieder totaler Unsinn ihrerseits ist, denn es war den schweizern Gewalthaufen verboten in der Schlacht Gefangene oder Beute zu machen. Das hätte ja ein Aufbrechen der geschlossenen Formation bedeutet, denn diese mussten sie halten, sie waren ja reine Fußkämpfer (Pikeniere und Hellebardiere).
      Ein ebensolcher Unsinn ist, dass "die beiden Herzöge von Burgund Karl der Kühne (Feigling) und sein Schwiegersohn Maximilian I. in die Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft" eingebrochen seien. Das konnten sie gar nicht gemeinsam, da Karl der Kühne längst tot war, als Erzherzog Maximilian Maria von Burgund ehelichte.

      Apart from what was explained, the Dutch were independant-minded. They didn't like huge-scale overlords such as Burgundians which later became the Habsburgs (the topic of this series).
      For example they had forced The Great Privilege on their overlords, something which was basically unheard at this time, when in a lot of parts of Europe (mainly eastern) it was still nobles ruling over people who were basically slaves.
      This type of fighting goes back to at least the 11th century, when the county of Holland was already at war with the Holy Roman Emperor who was trying to create centralised power and through that, more opression.
      The Gueldrian Wars saw Gelre fighting the Burgundians and later Habsburgs for their independance.
      People didn't like centralised authority from far away much.
      This went on for centuries, with clerics being the bearers of centralised opression, which local nobles and later on guilds, resisted. To name one example, the bishop of Utrecht had the village of Eemnes destroyed in 1321 because they were close to the free farmers of Holland and started getting funny ideas like "Why should we pay extremely high taxes so a bishop and emperor far far away can wear golden crowns?"
      Utrecht tried many times to seize Holland, but failed.

      Well it was mercy to slaughter them, it was the human thing to do. Without modern medicine, they would have just died slowly and painfully from their wounds, even the smaller ones would have been infected without penicillin and killed them. Since the 20th century, when being wounded was no longer such a death sentence, it was not the slaughtering but the keeping them alive which became the human thing to do.

    Good Lord what an awful interpretation of the Burgundian army and Valois court.

    Burgundy always belonged to France , the duchy was created by the French

      Talking about "the French" in the context of those times shows very little understanding of history. Burgundy evolved out of the country of the Burgundians, who where a different tribe of germanic people than the Franks, who came to give Francia and later France their Name.

      Initially yes, but then the duchy was extended and at the time of Charles the Bold, most of its lands were not fiefs of the French crown.

      @Albert Fels Yep, I was responding to the "initially created" part. I assume that Ms. Sombo was referring to the annexation of the duchy to the French royal domain and its subsequent granting by the king to his son as a fief. I would agree that what "should belong" to whom on that basis does not lead anywhere, of course.
