  • crosstrainingen... Our 2024 Honda CRF300L long-term review! The good news? It can wheelie. We got to ride the Honda CRF300L a lot in Canada recently. I reviewed the 250 model last year and the bigger engine does make a difference in this CRF300L review. It's still very user-friendly especially for beginners, but it does have that extra punch. The CRF250L was released in 2012 and very little changed for a while - just the usual 'bold new graphics' every year. In 2017 a few engine tweaks gained two more horsepower. Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia.And the CRF250 Rally was released with a large fuel tank, rally fairing, and longer suspension. In 2021 the 250 was replaced by the CRF300L which was upgraded to meet the EURO 5 emissions standard. Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. There was a corresponding Rally model too. A few years ago we rode the CRF250L and the extra power of the 300 is definitely a plus, even for beginners. It's still a very gentle linear power delivery and won't get you into trouble. But once you hit the higher revs the little Honda moves along quite well. The handling on dirt roads is fine with plenty of stability if hitting loose gravel. Like most dual-sport motorbikes the suspension is very basic and soft. On-road performance. The CRF300L is surprisingly good on the highway compared to other 250 dual-sport motorbikes. You have a bit of extra power for overtaking. Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. It would definitely be a fun commuter if needed although the snappy throttle at low revs could be annoying at lower speed. Longer trips? Overall quality? While Honda still makes a lot of its premium models in Japan, the CRF300L is made in Thailand along with many other Honda motorbikes. The good news is their quality control appears to be excellent in the Thailand factory. I scoured the forums and the only quality control issue that appears regularly is the thin paint on the frame. Some owners complain that their legs wear through the paint after a while. The Honda CRF300L motorbikes we rode have a lot of mileage already and the mechanic reported zero issues with overall quality. The seat is much better than an enduro motorbike but we found it gets uncomfortable after about two hours. The suspension! As mentioned we think it's adequate for everyday riding if you aren't too heavy. The lack of adjustment is a real shame and many feel Honda should have provided this and just raised the price a little. You can easily spend loads of cash with various upgrades from Race Tech, K-Tech, YSS, Ohlins, Wilbers and Hyperpro. My opinion? Why not put that extra money into a CRF450RL which has infinitely better suspension and way more power too? I think it's better to look at budget modifications first. Quite a few owners say a thicker fork oil can make a big difference for the front. And just add stiffer springs if it still feels too soft. The rear shock? Find the cheapest valve kit possible and fit this along with a stiffer spring. Do your research. There's plenty of discussion out there! Let us know about your modifications and the cost. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel.     POSSIBLE CURE FOR JERKY THROTTLE? A viewer reteptetep5078 reports the following tip from a Honda tech:
    1) turn key on, then off, then on
    2) turn throttle from 0 to full throttle three times
    3) turn key off wait a few seconds
    4) turn engine on and test.
    Apparently, this is a relearn procedure which tells the ECU what is the actual zero throttle and full throttle of your specific TPS hardware. Let us know if it works.

    RALLY RAID SUSPENSION MODS? a few viewers are saying this transforms the bike. About AUD2000 for their level 1 fork and shock kits, or USD1300 or so.       After adjusting most of the slack out of the throttle cable and doing this TPS relearn, I definitely find the throttle to be way less on/off than before and the response is way more predictable!
      Another thing I've heard about choppy throttle is that the ECU just needs more data to learn, so just put more miles on the bike and it smooths out over time.

    2015 CRF250L owner here. This bike does everything for me and never complains. I’ve added a larger tank, upgraded to racetech suspension front and rear and added an FMF Q4 slip on. I regularly ride single track, FSRs and do long distance travels on mine - Vancouver island to Nevada and back. It’s never let me down. Love these little bikes 👍🏻

      I got to ride a 250 Rally with Ohlins suspension upgrades. Wow. A pile of fun in the rougher terrrain.

      I have a 2020 CRF 250L, the last version. Not upgrades till now but thinking about change it by CRF 300 or change the suspensions because are really weak. Otherwise is a really fun and reliable bike.

      I replaced the front and rear suspension on my 2022 CRF300L with the Rally-Raid kits. Cost including a remote hydraulic preload adjuster was $1,650. It now has excellent suspension for rough back roads and trails (Rocky Mountains in Arizona). I have ridden my friend’s CRF450RL and I prefer my suspension on rough trails. The CRF450RL is a better bike for aggressive motocross riding. I want a bike for rough trail riding at a moderate pace. I prefer my CRF300L for that. I also note that the CRF450RL has stalling and throttle snatch issues that owners typically spend large amounts of money to cure (e.g., ECU modifications with compatible exhaust replacements). I don’t need the higher power of the CRF450RL and I do not want the more frequent maintenance intervals of a higher performance engine.

    I just bought a 2022 CRF300L as my first dual sport, and it's been a blast. It's very easy to find these secondhand with basically no miles on them. Apparently the snatchy throttle can be cleaned up by adjusting throttle cables and resetting the throttle position sensor (easy diy). I'll try that this weekend.
    It's awesome to see that experienced riders still have a great time on this bike. Seems like I'll have it for a long time!

    The best way to explain the new CRF300L is that it is still better than a CRF250L with all stage 1 mods (exhaust, ECU, etc.) and almost exactly as good as a bone stock DRZ 400 - but with fuel injection and a 6th gear. I've had several of each of these bikes and I can tell you that the CRF300L is an AMAZING little machine. Ride one and you'll be sold.

      @@crosstrainingadventure I had both the 250L and the 300L suspension done by Andreani because I am 200lbs and ride very aggressively (jumps/whoops/etc.) so it had to be done. Transformed the motorcycle 100%. I'd say the best mod on the Honda machines will always be the suspension - although the 450RL comes with an AMAZING set up right from the factory.

    I turn 60 this year and have ridden dirt bikes for 50 years. I was looking for a bike I could pick up more easily than my KTM990, but still adventure ride and easier to swing my leg over than My Husky 449 and stil trail ride. The CRF300L seemed the answer. I bought one 2nd hand with a pipe and full YSS upgade front and rear. I love this little bike! I feel like I'm 18 again riding my old 1982 TT350 returning to where I started! The CRF450L might be better but unavailable in New Zealand.

      Yep, a total suspension package transforms it! It's always a good argument for picking up a used model with all that expensive stuff done.

    I have not tried this because I sold my bike due to the jerky throttle before finding this out.

      @@mfranquemont1884 According to the Honda tech, it is applicable to all Honda models. Whether it will improve the jerky throttle response though, I dont know. Probably worth a try.

      Where did you get this information?
      I’ll give it a shot. But people are claiming that the G2 throttle tamer makes a difference. Personally, I was able to adjust my cable and achieved a major improvement. What little I do have, I’m use to it. And I do slow technical exercises, static balance etc.

    I was one of the first in the US to get one of the new 300 Rally, and I had a 2016 standard model prior. Definitely a great bike for what it is. The only failure I've ever had after thousands of miles was a punctured tire. I've upgraded mine with a Seat Concepts seat, RaceTech suspension, and a 550 Performance ECU w/Yoshimura exhaust. Love that little 300.

      Unfortunately, in California, the 550 ECU is not available. The seat on my 2023 is fine (no need for a Seat Concepts). I've had about 5 for-no-reason stalls (2 while sitting in a parking spot). Must be emissions rules related. I'm a gravel road / 2-track rider, so the suspension is fine for me, but I can see it nearly bucking me off if I got crazy on whoops. I had so much fun riding the Black Hills BDR-X this summer. My last bike had a DG exhaust, so I am over the loud pipe. I kinda like being stealthy on the quiet 300.

    Went from an XR650L to the CRF300L, to the CRF450RL. Loved the little 300 but that suspension in the rear is definitely no joke. Would not recommend any luggage with the stock suspension, but what a great little bike. Wonderful, confidence -inspiring bike.

    Luv my 300l Rally. At 210lb, 30” inseam I rode on stock suspension for about 18 months, no big deal. But since I’ve added the Ktech Razor rear shock, Low version, $575US, a stiffer spring up front,, $100US, and lowered my forks 7mm, I now feel like One with the bike. In the states, it’s only $160US for a 550 Performance ECU flash, if you send in your stock unit. And my second time around was free. Upgraded to a 42T rear sprocket, without sacrificing any top end speed, the bike is on point now!

    I own the 300L Rally. Its my gateway to offroad and to learn if i want to go offroad, if i want a bigger bike, or a touring bike and keep the little 300 for offroading.

    This review was sooooo accurate - well done! Just hopped off a CRF300 (the Rally model) after 17,000 kays, and virtually everything you said was spot on. I only weight 80 kilos and the suspension- whilst bouncy- was totally fine, so long as you don't want to get airborne of each erosion mound. Great review, was super accurate 😎👍

    I ran a WR250R for a few years and just sold it. wife has the xt250. I'd pic the xt250 over the wr only because it doesn't try to be something it's not like the wr250r. the wr is geared too low or too high with stock gearing. the xt is a mountain goat and inspite of its lack of 6th gear and air cooling i always recommend the xt over most anything for a new rider whether street or off road. i gone through the xt250, a drz400, the klr650 with cogent, the ktm 990adv with superplush, the ol hog gs1150, the wr250r and a couple street bikes mixed in there.
    BUT this is a HUGE BUT, the Honda Grom is hands down the most fun bike i have ever owned and i daily rode it for 5 years. i've done 800 miles in a weekend trip on a grom. beat the snot out of it and it never quit once. water up to the butt cheeks on seats plowed through it. snow, rain, heat, forest gunk, river gunk, swamp yuck, you name it i rode it on a grom. the grom is more of an adv bike than most adv bikes. plus you can wring its neck and never break the law.

    KLX300! What convinced me was just sitting on the two bikes in the show room. At 190 lbs I could bounce the Honda like a pogo stick, the KLX with it's stiffer springs and some level of damping not so much. For trail riding and light adventure riding I haven't had to modify anything suspension, power or gearing related on the KLX. So to repeat the basic advice I've heard elsewhere; if you don't want to get into major upgrades buy the KLX if you are over 150 lbs or an aggressive rider and the Honda is a good option if you are 150lbs or less.

      I am 270# and riding stock KLX suspension. I would like to upgrade it eventually, but for now I ride gentle enough that I dont have any issues yet.

      From what I hear this is a good point. It's still quite soft but the KLX has better suspension overall.

      i own the crf and you do need to upgrade the suspension for anything above very gentle trail riding!

      But I only spent $700 for an upgraded suspension for the Honda, and the suspension I bought is better than the stock KLX suspension. I’m not knocking Kawasaki, I’ve had them all my life. Just saying.

      I must admit I prefer the grunt and can live with the 20kg extra weight.

      @@crosstrainingadventure but after mods, like changing the muffler and eliminating charcoal canister, pair valve etc that weight difference decreases drastically? Also the DR650 feels having a bit lower center of mass not sure tough
      At the end if the weight difference is 10-12kg for a twice as big engine and more power i would say the DR is far better deal, the only thing the honda wins with very good advantage is fuel economy that is almost double

    Everyone deserves to have one of these small dual sports in their garage! I have owned and still regularly ride a Kawasaki Super Sherpa 250 since 2006. Wide ratio 6 speed, low comfy seat, 130 kg full tank, adequate suspension, good power and totally reliable. Very common in New Zealand and Australia as the same bike sold to farmers as the Kawasaki Stockman. Great around town, cruises at 100 km/hr and very easy to handle and pick up on rough trails. Both of my sons got their motorcycle licenses on this bike. Definitely a permanent member of the family! I am sure the CRF300L would be the same.

    I downsize from a 2019 ktm 690er to a 300l, the 300l is easier on tight trails, very forgiven motorcycle I have ktech suspension, 550 performance ecu ,with aftermarket exhaust, but what makes it more attractive is that all the aftermarket stuff is way, way cheaper than many other bikes

      @crosstrainingadventure I got the razor r lite full shock on rear $572 us dollars, and the front spring was $95 ,I did the same rocky trails in Colorado and Utah that I did with the 690 the year before, so as an intermediate rider I think it's a great suspension setup

    I have been very tempted by the Rally model. In the US I have found that 40+ hp or so is the sweet spot if interstate is a concern. Unfortunely the best I have see the 300l mods achieve is the same power and torque as a stock DRZ400. I hope one day honda will make a 450/500 version of the motor.

    I started on a 250l rally and it was a great bike to learn on. However, if any beginners looking for a bike are reading this, I recommend getting the non-rally model to start on. Maybe it was just me but I found myself being afraid to try stuff on that bike because I was afraid of breaking the big fairings since they're actually pretty expensive. I think I learned more when I got a DR650 instead because the bike was a tank and I was never afraid of breaking the bike. For that reason, if I were a beginner, I'd rather get a regular 300l and just put a big fuel tank on it.

      A good idea. I think we often get attracted to the rally style because Dakar has made it a popular look. But it also adds quite a bit of weight and expensive stuff to break!

    Still on my crf 250L from 2018 - upgraded suspension, fmf slip on, fat bar and bar risers, enduristan soft bars - is enough for me in the swedish forrests but when I tried the 300L last week I could defintely feel the power and it will be more comfortable on the high way and leave more room for improvement... so one day I will do the change to a 300L.     I’ve got the EU 2023 300 Rally. It’s travelled the Portuguese ACT, the length of India and the Pamir Highway. Got it as a lighter alternative for my 1200GS. Replaced the stock rear suspension with a Hagon and added rear racks for Kriegas and a roll bag. It has been utterly brilliant in all major respects. Even the seat was tolerable. Gripes/issues - of course it would be nice if it was taken out to a true 300 just to give it a bit more Highway poke. Also it will overheat regularly on hot uphills, prob because the rad and plumbing is now on the right above the exhaust and the whole lot is enclosed in the fairings. Sips petrol, range up to 380 km. Gasps at altitude. Side stand is awful, needs a shorter replacement. Overall, though, an excellent value/build for a proper adventure bike and doesn’t come with the drop anxiety of the big boys. Perfect for an amateur like me. Saw another dozen or so in the Pamirs so obvs it’s becoming a popular choice. PS the Pamirs did for the Hagon but then they’ll smash anything. All the Honda parts did fine.

    I rode some BDR sections (Wyoming, South Dakota) on my 300L Rally and was very, very happy with the performance. Fantastic on gravel roads and a blast on 2-track. The seat is very comfortable and the wind protection very noticeable. The twitchy throttle has not improve in 3000 miles. It's like a digital vs. analogue thing. In this case, it's either on or off (digital) and does not smoothly accelerate or decelerate. Not a deal breaker, if you are considering this bike, just annoying in 1st and 2nd. Bar risers are a must. Pegs (with rubber) are fine. Go with the Rally, the extras are worth it. I lowered mine with a Kouba link and simply love this machine!

      The Rally looks great too. Ever tried a G2 Throttle Tamer? I've used it on a few fuel injected thumpers, always makes them feel more like a carb bike with that smooth throttle response.

    Love my 300LS!! I did bigger gas tanks (3.6 gallon) and rally raid level 1 suspension.. did seat concepts seat, tusk bars and guards, 550 stock 87 ecu. Prefect setup!! Oh and new tusk dsport tires.

    I really enjoyed my XT250. The low seat, low (relatively) weight, and great manoeuvrability made it a joy to ride almost anywhere. It just needed an extra 10hp and a sixth gear.

    This bike always struck me as a fantastic budget dual sport with good capabilities, good reliability, good economy, and so on. Very proven bike at this point. These engines get beaten in race bikes (Ari comes to mind) and just keep going. Seems like just what the doctor ordered for many riders just wanting to get out there and explore. I rode a friend's CBR250R around for a few months and it was fine if you weren't expecting massive acceleration. I hear the 300cc engine made quite the difference.

    I've had one for about six months now. My first dual sport bike and I'm new to offroad riding.
    I've done all the usual protective stuff, the Rally Raid level 1 kit and Acerbis fuel tank. I've also recently put on a full Motox system and an ECU from SSS motorcycles in Tamworth but haven't ridden it yet since those were installed. I told myself I wasn't going to bother with power mods or exhaust but the full system and ECU came in under a grand so I thought I'd try it out. I haven't found the throttle too bad after removing the slack from the cables but a problem for me was the heat from the exhaust. It got hot enough during one ride I had to stop for a little bit, so I'm hoping these mods help with that.
    Not a lot of negatives, the biggest for me is the fit and finish. I've owned Japanese made Hondas before and there is a difference. The plastics don't fit together nicely, and that got even worse after installing the Acerbis tank. There's a particular order each panel needed to be tightened up in to get it to fit relatively okay, but there's still gaps that bug me. I had to retap the subframe when installing my rear rack - the threads are like butter and they will crossthread if the bolts aren't dead straight. It can feel gutless on the highway, particularly going up hill.
    Mechanically and reliability wise I haven't had any issues, including after I dumpstered it hard on its side doing a sick although unintended jump cresting a steep hill. I like it a lot. I've been doing the local trails and commuting to work a few days a week and don't have any problems.
    I went with Rally Raid because the local suspension guru wasn't available. I'd heard some people were happy with heavier springs and oil and the cheap YSS shock, and other people wishing they got something better. Based on that I went whole hog and did Rally Raid. If you're going to do a cartridge kit like the YSS one, you might as well do Rally Raid as it's about the same price.
    A few notes:
    - Clive Ward of Motorcyclebiz near Newcastle is an Australian distributor for Rally Raid. It works out a bit cheaper to buy from him as you're not paying duty and shipping. He'll also fit the fork kit for you if you send in the forks. I did it myself following the instructions and Rally Raid's video, it wasn't too bad.
    - An alternative to 555 is SSS in Tamworth. I haven't tested their ECU yet but I figured I'd try to support an Australian business and save on shipping costs and time. They claim it's tuned for Australian fuel but I don't know how much difference that makes.
    - If you get the Acerbis tank and have a model with LED lights, note that the front indicator brackets will interfere with the tank. You can still reach full lock and engage the steering lock but it will dent the tank. You can flip the left and right brackets around and reverse them to easily clear the tank. Handguard mounts can be a problem - my barkbuster mounts would hit the tank as well. I ended up drilling the crossbar on my Renthals so I could mount the crossbar in the handguard mounts so I could move them to clear the tank. If you're planning on getting the tank, consider fatbars to give you more room or handguards that mount to the triple clamps.
    I'm happy with it. I've seen some comments that it's not suitable for offroad riding at all but that's obviously not true. You can take it stock straight out to the trails and have fun, although suspension made a big difference for me and I feel more confident going faster now. Love your videos, been watching them for years telling myself I was going to get into dual sports and adventure riding and I finally did it.

      Great to hear it's working out for you. A few have commented that the overall finish of these Hondas made in Thailand is a drop from the older Japanese manufacturing. But thankfully the mechanical side has stayed 100%... as far as we can see. Some good mods there, I might put a few in the pinned first comment.

    I rode my WR250R on Las Vegas freeways and rocky desert trails, still riding it in AZ. It also has the snatchy throttle issue. I haven't fixed mine, apparently removing the AIS, airbox flap, and/or a tuner can fix it. But I remember reading about adjusting the throttle position sensor also. 2008 one, got a hyperpro emulsion rear shock, the 4.7L tank, aluminum skidplate, really beat up handguards, a brake guard or two, case saver, bigger rear sprocket, speedo healer and that's basically it. Had a yamalink to lower it, took it out because the shock was bottoming out and I'd rather have the ground clearance.
    Replaced cam chain tensioner, stator, fuel pump. Valves still ok at 11,000 miles. Replaced clutch cover because I cracked it in a drop then rode dripping oil on the street and rear tire like an idiot, maybe I'll upload the video. Compared to my Beta 390 it feels like steering a boat or something. Super heavy, the heaviest I'd want to deal with in any technical situation, and needs to be revved out. But still fun, more comfortable on the street. As rideable as it is, the Beta is wild by comparison. Took me a bit to learn to stop high siding it offroad.

      Definitely a very different bike to the RR390! I've noticed in the USA they put it in the dual sport category, whereas in Australia we'd definitely classify it as a road legal enduro bike. A lot more expensive, but way lighter and much better power and suspension!

    I've got a 300L and find the bike okay at everything, that is the strength of the bike. My bike is stock with a bash plate, raised bars and minor things done. I love how quiet it is. I btm out the suspension at times but meh, it's probably not worth upgrading.
    On a ride last weekend I came off at 20km and almost torn a foot peg off. The frame is very thin so I had it strengthened where the pegs attach on.
    I keep telling myself when I'm not riding it that I'll sell it and upgrade, then I ride it and I fall in love again 😅

    got the 300 rally in France ( bought in belgium) . 6000 km after on road trips : perfect bike with mosko 80liters soft luggage. better than my 1250 GS wich I don’t use on roadtrip, so light ( 145kg) that you can stop everywhere without afraid of terrain inclinaison, and enough power for roads, amp peak, dirt and highway. better also than my 701 husqvarna wich was too brutal for road trip. default ? strange noise from engine ( normal) and it is a tall bike so you have to be confident that wh you seat your other feet will find ground .
    so 9/10 and by far the best ever bike I use for real road trip alone.

    My 300 rally had been across the US on the TAT before I bought it.
    It came to me with Ktech front and back and it allows the bike to carry its speed on fast going and works well in technical sections.
    I rode it in Wales for a year with the TRF and it performed well even out with adventure bikes it kept up and I think was easier to ride off road.
    I fitted a lowering link and raised the forks 10mm as I'm not tall but because of the Ktech it's still got loads of clearance.
    Last tear I did 2500 mile in Morocco and it performed really well in company with T7s 890s, 690s and 450 KTM rally bikes.
    I fitted a UniFilter air filter which was excellent.
    I'm going back again this October.
    It's a great platform and the MPG is amazing..
    I thinking of fitting the 550 Performance 301cc kit and ecu flash for a bit more torque.

    Gday skipper + friends i can finally waffle on with some confidence as ive owned a 300L from new since 2021.I also own a 450 husky/ ktm 525 for reference and weigh 104kg
    CRF is super reliable which is super important when you ride alone km,s from anywhere.With new suspension and other mods it can go quickly across the dirt but reaches a limit where a true enduro bike can push on.
    I fitted risers,dif.handlebars,grips,tail tidy,custom bash plate, 7 TOOTH larger rear sprocket ,dunlop 606 tyres,dog leg levers,metal brake pads,wrap around hand protectors etc.All good mods.Dont waste money on a loud exhaust ,it does almost zero except annoy everyone.
    The good-Off road,It beats adventure big bikes except on the smooth dirt roads and feels light-ish and balanced. excellent fuel economy,road tax,service intervals and only 15e for an air filter!Will get you most places + enjoy your life doing so.Staaaaaarrrts easily.
    The not so good-Guys at your level with more powerful bikes will be faster than you (690,kove 450 etc) as on every straight bit before the turn they will gain ground .Even riders below your level can be faster on the fireroad type trails again due to the power.The suspension is simply not up to fast riding off road (1200e upgrade) and the above comments are with upgraded suspension with the standard suspension forget it.Handlebars pull your hands into an incorrect unnatural position for off road riding.Easy fix.Junk the clutch switch and side stand switch so you dont ---k about on a hill when it stalls.
    Its been a great 3 years with mine ,It feels like it wont let you down which gives peace of mind on trips😀

    Had 2 Thailand Honda's,quality is good, crank slug barrel bearings are top notch, definitely agree on a re_ flashed ecu ,you can gear low for trail and the 6th will do 110kph at 5k rpm...

    I had a first year 250L. 19000 miles, big bore kit, turbo at one point, sidecar also. Was not nice to it but it is reliable if you leave it stock. I wouldn't go from my 500X back to that, but it would be nice to have them both.

    I had one and agree with all the comments in your review. It's a terrific bike for quality, low maintenance, fun, and economy. Dollar for dollar the best bike that leans towards the road bias of dual sporting. I also agree that for the money people spend the CRF450L/RL is a better bike - lighter than the CRF250/300, more power, better suspension, and easier to ride off-road but with more frequent oil changes and maintenance (which really isn't that big of a deal). I love the CRF450L for trail duty with luggage and it's so much easier to ride on trails (less physical work and more energy saving for the rider) and does surprisingly well on reasonable journeys on the highway. Is the CRF450L worth the nearly doubled cost? Well, that's up to your wallet.

      Yep, just depends on what sort of bike you want. And how much you want to spend! I'm always surprised when guys ride these dual sport bikes but expect the performance of enduro bikes that cost almost twic as much lol.

      For me, the 300 Rally (with all the upgrades) made more sense to me for the Trans America Trail. The 450 requires too much maintenance to travel from one side of the country to the other. And the extra fuel and wind protection was a no brainer. Next season I will install the Big Bore kit, and I think that’s all I could ever ask for in an adventure machine. If Yamaha would bring back the WR and offer a Rally version, that would be epic.

    I like mine a lot. The squishy suspension is great for a beginner, and you can always upgrade it later on. It works fine on trails btw…. Just don't be jumping and you will be all right.
    Would you consider making a video with detailed info on all the suspension upgrade options? i.e. heavier oil, spring, valving kits, etc.
    I think such video would give you a lot of views. The one frustration is that everyone just buys a kit from a company and that is very expensive. There’s little info on cheaper meaningful options.

      Unfortunately we could only access all these Honda models while we were in Canada. The logistics of trying to find owners in Australia with various mods who would let us ride their bikes? A huge undertaking.

    Add Rally Raid to the suspension list, a lot of good reports about their kit.
    I have the 300 Rally (with RR suspension). A few months ago I rode it 1000kms to a trail riding event with camping gear on the back, chucked the luggage off, set up camp, did two days of tracks snotty enough to stretch my meagre skills, and then saddled up and rode it home again. I can't think of another bike that could do all that as well as this one, for my skill level. I'm one of those miserable peasants who'd have a snowball's chance in hell of getting any two cylinder bike around those tracks. This bike makes it all possible. You know, kind of like in the adventure bike ads, only it's actually doable for me.

    Awesome!! This has been on my radar for the past few months, just need to save up the cash. Love the 350, but the maintenance interval for long dual sport trips sucks. Love my 701...but it's quite a large bike. After "acquiring" a 250F from my wife, I may end up being be a Honda convert.

    Just "downgraded" from a brand new Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono supermoto to a new CRF300L and my quality of life increased tremendously! Haven't had the pleasure of taking it off-road yet, but just the soft suspension and a tamer throttle is a joy by itself (I weigh 70kg, so stock suspension is pretty okay at first glance).
    Some cheap parts on it, definitely. Like the footpegs look absolutely abysmal, but no surprise considering the price of the new bike is half of the Ducati. Definitely NOT half of a bike compared to Ducati. Rather the opposite - way more to do on the CRF, where more places it can go. Pretty happy so far!

    I own 2 klx 300s. 1 Dual Sport, and 1 Super Moto. Obviously, the DS is for gravel and trails. The SM is for joy rides, errands, commutes and anytime I know I am not planning to leave pavement. I ride that bike to save wear and tear / mileage on the DS. Also taking those activities on the SM, saves the DS knobby tires from so much pavement wear.

    The throttle CAN BE FIXED WITHOUT FLASHING the ECU!!!! Just do a TPS reset. It takes 10 seconds. No need to spend the money.

    So, I went from a DRz 400SM down to a 300L (I had my SM running 21”/18” more often than 17”s)
    First ride, I was gutted. So disappointed with the lack of power to compared to my 3x3,jetted,and yoshi exhaust DRZ.
    However, after giving this 300L a little more time, and the air box/exhaust/ 550 ecu treatment, I’m I’m very happy with the little 300. The stock suspension for me is a little soft, but I am a smaller guy at 5’6” and 150lbs. I can see upgrading in the future to a full Racetech setup.
    I understand the sentiment of “just buy a KTM/450RL” however, I do a good bit of road riding with my wife and father in law, and a good bit of single track with my Dad. This 300L is shaping up to be my personal unicorn bike. On the trail it feels much lighter than the dizzer (even though they’re pretty close weight wise, the crf300L seems to have a lower center of gravity, the dizzer always felt top heavy off road.)
    TLDR: bike good with basic mods, I imagine with real knobbies and good suspension it can be great off road.

    Live the Crf300l just wish it had better suspension options from the factory…Wr250r in the USA can be had with suspension kits, multiple mods, and low milage for 4-5g range all day - better deal all day!

      I agree. While the most of the their target market will probably find it's okay, I think it could be significantly better for very little extra cost. E.g. look at the suspension, and price, of the KLX300.

    I rode my buddies 300l. Stock other than yss shock and yoshi pipe. I was really surprised how smooth the engine is. Very little vibes and will run 70 mph with ease. I have a KTM 890 adv and a 500exc. It could possibly replace both of these bike for 90% of the riding I do. I also have a KLX230. The 300 is way smoother running and more powerful.

    I got a 2014 WR250R for around 3500 bucks USD with around 30,000 miles and an upgraded rear shock thanks to the previous owner. I like it, I’m 6’3” so the seat height doesn’t bother me. Still kinda wish Yamaha would make a wr300r or wr450r, hell now that you mentioned the 300L Rally they could do the same with these theoretical bikes instead of making a “mini Tenere.” As for seat height, Honda makes a version of the 300L rally with a shorter seat height.

    Do some suspension work and it's even a better bike!! everyone wants to do power mods first. 1-4 hp is not going to help you.. suspension will!!! I did rallyRaid level 1 front and rear. wow what an amazing difference.

      Ive been through a few suspension options trying to find something that works and ive come very close now with andreani twin cartridge fronts and a YSS rally rear. I ride a hard enduro course 3-5days a week and this bike is almost perfect now, a slightly lower 2nd gear and minus 10kgs and it will be perfect.

    Everyone has a good opinion for Honda because they produced a reliable machine with relaxed environmental laws 1970s compared to now. NOW a days the suck with out modificiions away from the legal version of 2024. They suck if you know what your doing offroad. They require significant modifications if you are talented off road. They are acceptable if you dont any difference.

    It's a real hard bike to make an argument against, I've got a wr250r, and I think the only thing I would have issue with moving to a 300l is the suspension. My buddy's ktm ruined me back when I had an old 80's bike, not with the power but with modern suspension, I don't know if I could go back. Also my wife has the TW, among others around here, and it's really hard to argue against that low seat height, and how cool everyone thinks the chunky tires are.

      @@leeroykelly781 Nice, I picked up my 2011 three years ago for 4500, had like 14k hard miles on it, but it was kitted out with every farkle you could buy for it (skidplates, tuner, exhaust, multiple sprockets, the suspension was done by Go Race, ect) I get the impression it lived a hard life before I got it, and it's lived a harder one since, and it never ceases to be just fine after every crash and tumble.

    I've owned an xt250 and wr250r, as well as a dr650, and a drz400 in supermoto trim. I'm currently in the market for a new small adventure bike, having recently moved on a ktm390 adv. Strangely, im not sure i can pick a favourite between the xt, wr, and dr...they each had things i liked and things i didnt like. I'm likely going to pick up a 300l and kit it out for adv riding (basic suspension upgrades, bigger tank). I have heard that many prefer the engine in the honda to the wr, as it is torquier and produces more of its power lower in the rev range. The lower seat will also be a plus over that yamaha.

      The suspension will definitely be inferior to the Yamaha. But given the cheap price it allows some upgrading which makes a big difference....

    We all know the WR250R is the best bike in this category. but that 300 Rally is a unique offering, more so once you sort the suspension.... For an average rider wanting to do bigger trips on road that include moderately technical dirt riding there is no better choice. Itchy boots has proven that.

    Throttle jerkiness - I have had 2 ECU flashes, adjusted the throttle cables, and the T2 throttle tamer. These all help, but it is still annoying. Otherwise a great bike,

    This is my addition to the CRF family.
    I believe the extra money spent towards the suspension is worth it compared to the CRF450L. It's very capable and comfortable on road, it has very long service intervals, it has the fairing and has an ABS.
    My opinion: Don't buy exhaust or anything else, get the suspension and enjoy!

    Imagine the 300 Rally with the 450RL suspension. An entirely different machine!
    The 300 is such a disappointment, it’s just rubbish with the suspension. Nice engine put in a cheap frame. What you say about not wasting money fixing the 300 and going for the 450 is spot on, even though some aspects of the 450 need fixing too.

    I have a 2014 KLX250S EFI euro model. I'm riding maybe 70/30 gravel/tarmac. I enjoy KLX on gravel and forest roads but I feel like I want a bigger tank and better road performance with some wind protection. Is crf300 rally worth the upgrade? I maybe need to pay about 3000 euro more to get the crf300l rally.

      Hard to say. Is there a bigger aftermarket tank for the KLX? Plenty of aftermarket windscreens... And from what I read the KLX suspension is a bit better, you may need to upgrad the Honda's suspension too.

    I tested a 300L two years ago. Apart from the RE Himalayan it's absolutely the worst to ride. Slow, swampy suspension, way too soft seat. Probably Honda quality but it's fun like the color gray.

      So many variables it's impossible to say. But if you can do the heavier springs and heavier oils yourself it's cheap to find out if that's enough.

    All things considered these 300 dual sports bikes (crf/klx) are starting to sound more and more like unicorns to me. I love my dr650 but I do feel the extra weight offroad and since most off the fun is off-road I am really starting to consider making a move. Wil I regret it ?

      Dr is a great bike but 65 lbs heavier than the klx. klx seat is not comfy even with seat concepts. It's not great on interstate. But the deal breaker for me was the DR has carbs and the KLX is FI. I've had issues with carbs and ethanol fuel blends, and I don't want to deal with it anymore. (I currently own 2 klx 300s)

      @@ericcournoyer1595 60 mph no problem. I have a klx 300 ds, and a klx 300 sm, both do 80+ mph easily. I do short interstate runs but long hours on the interstate would not be fun. Smaller highways would be fine. Most highways in the US are 50-60 mph. I am also 270 pounds. 80+ mph is still no struggle. You are getting close to the top end at that point though.

    Mine won’t wheelie!
    -moderate break-in & heat-cycle between increased revs. Oil change at 25,100,600 miles & every 1500 miles after.
    Immediately installed 550 performance ECU stage 1.5/ 91octane.
    CBR cams & boot
    Removed charcoal canister
    High flow filter & airbox cover.
    I drilled the equivalent of 1.25” of holes in the spark arrester plug, for better flow.
    Front & rear, fully adjustable suspension .
    The front end will not leave the ground!?!?!?!?
    Anyone else?
    Just rode across the USA(some TAT/ some BDRs) approximately 9k miles. It’s consuming oil like crazy!

      It generally just comes down to technique. E.g. there are guys doing wheelies on Goldwings and Harley Davidsons (something I can't do!). Generally you don't need much horsepower, it's all in the timing, body positioning and weighting the pegs etc.

      High flow air filters will allow dirt to pass through if not properly maintained or installed. They don’t have the same life span as the good old paper ones.
      My bet is that some dirt got past the filter and you have oil blowing past the rings, due to the wear of the dirt in the cylinder.

      -pulled/cleaned injector & it started after turning over wot for 60sec.
      I had wiped out the airbox & cleaned the filter already. I bought some automotive “caulk” & created a better seal.
      I’m guessing you’re right.
      I’ll probably do a 301cc conversion next- how would I confirm “blow-by”…a compression test?

      I suspect because that's a big part of the cost savings? And the majority of buyers find it's okay stock. But of course experienced riders quickly hit the limits but have usually moved on to bigger bikes by then.

    I was going to get one of these until I rode the new CFMOTO 450MT. Sure there is a bit more weight but the suspension is better. 17litre tank and twin cylinder. The seat height can be dropped even further as it all ready has a lowering link incorporated if required.

      For tall riders, I reckon there's a fair bit of overlap. But a lot of riders find the DRZ way too tall. And it's all very arbitrary, but generally 250s and 300s get lumped into the same class. Then 400 to 450s in another class.

    Bought a 2021 300L (non rally) and was horrified at how often it tried to kill me with it's shite suspension and sluggish handling at the local OHV parks on intermediate trails. I got a KTM 500 exc 2022 the next year out of fear of the Honda, and it's so incredible in every way. I bought a second KTM 500 (used 2014) with only 1k miles on it after that for only $6K, less than I spent out the door on my 300L. After that purchase the idea of ever buying a 300L new instead of a used, low mileage KTM 500 became clearly a really dumb idea. Only new riders should consider a 300L since now price is no valid limiter to get into a truly incredible platform. A 500 exc is safer and more capable and more fun from highway to rock garden, really in every single way, the 300L makes zero sense now. I want to love honda but those f*ckers almost caused me harm by marketing that 300L through their partners as a dirt capable bike - it's not, it's dangerous unless you redo the suspension and still it feels like a street bike in it's handling and power delivery. Not happy Honda, I used to love you but I don't love scammers - you'd not be in the dog house were it not for your dirt capable marketing scams.

      None of these dirt bikes should be used as a dirt bike, that's for sure! Unless as you say someone is learning from scratch (and doesn't weigh too much). To me the 500EXCF is a totally different class. It costs way more. Much lighter and more powerful. It's a fully fledged enduro bike. Do you have a link to the Honda marketing promoting it as a dirt bike?

      Well if you couldn’t tell that it needed a suspension upgrade before going out trying to hurt yourself, you must be fairly new yourself... Honda left plenty of room financially to install any suspension the buyer chooses. You can’t compare the ridiculously priced, questionable reliability KTM to a budget Honda, that still holds up to its age old reliability. Performance mods are cheap for it too.

I compared the price of a very low mileage ($6k for my 2014 with 600 miles on it) used ktm to being less in cost than a new 300L out the door at the dealer, so ktm's don't have to be "ridiculously priced". I'm not sure I also think a reliability argument holds up when trying to suggest the honda, which costs half the price of a KTM (new) is somehow built with more reliable parts or design? That's a tall claim. I used to ride when I was young, then picked it up again 30 yrs later, so I was new to the latest bikes, but not new to riding. I'm an EMT so I am thinking about other people's safety after switching off that 300L, hence why I'm spending time here talking about it, we EMTs spend a lot of time talking about safety, it's how we think. I have no need to convince myself of anything by building solidarity for my decisions here, I have all 3 bikes but only ride the ktms for the reasons I stated. Last year I rode past a group of 6 300L riders on engineers pass in CO. They had to go like 8 miles an hour down the technical sections while my cousin and I, on a couple of ancient, unmaintained 2002 and 2005 ktm 520 and 450s, blew past them. All I could think was, sh*t, how scary riding those 300L's on this terrain, I'd be terrified.
