  • Travel with the train driver as we travel from Castlemaine to Muckleford on the Victorian Goldfields Railway in Central Victoria, Australia in a locomotive hauled (Y class) passenger train. Castlemaine is a main station on the Bendigo line.

    Great little railway and credit to the volunteers who keep these lines open,Victoria's lost the bulk of its branch lines,must try it out

      It is certainly nice to travel on a branch line and is great to see them being preserved for future generations 👍🙂

    Ah, Muckleford. Stood on the Castlemaine end of the platform filming a chap having a driver for a day birthday experience. His wife was also watching and, after a couple of minutes, suggested that I might like to shake both feet vigorously and move because a colony of bull ants was about to swarm up my leg. I was standing on their nest entrance in the platform...I still hold the world record for the standing jump at Muckleford station.

    It's a shame that they've ripped up the Maryborough to Castlemaine line, that could have been useful for a direct Ballarat to Bendigo service at some stage, or even an alternative route through that area if needed.

    • @driver667
      @driver667  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is a pity but I guess as long as they keep the rail reserve free, it's always possible to reopen it. Don't expect it any time soon 🤔👍🙂

    This was fascinating, thank you. And surprising to me: what services are on this line? I live in Europe and am out of touch. I am on summer holidays, so was bemused to see the autumn colours of trees around Castlemaine - and enjoyed the change to eucalypts and the lovely central Victorian countryside. My paternal great great grandfather moved from Muckleford to Kerang, where I grew up. Not as lovely, but I did enjoy Driver667's recent trip from there to Dingee, where my mother grew up.

      Me again, something rather different: I read recently that the Victorian gauge of 5'3" was not exactly copied from the Irish gauge, as we all believed, for the Irish one was actually specified as 1600mm!! (Although, yes, they are exactly the same 😅)

    • @driver667

    Haven't seen a good cab ride in this direction before (although I've got lots of memories of the line in my own video collection). Assuming the long rails are to replace the (sometimes very) old short-jointed metals, where did they get such a treasure trove from?

    • @driver667
      @driver667  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, they are replacing the old short rails. I believe some of the newer rails came from parts of the Castlemaine to Maryborough line and some has come from the level crossing removals. 👍😊

    Our bicycle touring club have travelled on the tourist train several times. We ride up on the rail trail and have lunch at Maldon and return from Maldon to Castlemaine by train.
    All the best to the enthusiastic and friendly volunteers who keep this line alive, especially the guard who loaded all our bicycles in the guard van for the return trip. It is a lovely ride through the bush. Recommended.
