East of Eden is one of my all-time favorites! Don't be so intimidated by the length, it's a rather engaging read. Also planning to read my first Iris Murdoch this year; The Bell and/or The Sandcastle! And I really want to reread Middlemarch. Good luck with these reads, I'm sure you'll get to a lot of them! I hope you enjoy Picture of Dorian Gray too; it has really beautiful writing. :)

On the Origin of Species was so well written. I didn't expect it to be so engaging, but I loved it. Darwin got a little sassy from time to time xD

The Picture of Dorian Grey is the most sublime book I have ever read. Decadent, gothic, literary, dramatic. I hope you'll love it.

East of Eden is brilliant, I agree with the other commentators it does not feel like an effort to get through at all.
When you read Lolita I recommend The Lolita podcast as a great companion, in fact it’s a great listen even if you don’t get to the book

You should start with Pale Fire for Nabokov. It's just a 999 line poem followed by some footnotes. Leaves you plenty of time to read anything else from him ;)

Omg...East of Eden is so good!!! One of my all time favorites reads. I should probably take a stab at my classics shelf as well. (Btw... I've been following your channel for years and your winged eye liner is always so consistently fabulous. Those wings could cut bread and I love it!)

Wow, 😍 your classics collection!! It's very cool seeing your Roads books because I only have a few of those and the company went out of business so those editions are really hard to find, now. Okay, now I'm pretty much just going to make a comment on as many titles as I can. East of Eden is one of my favorite books. It's quite a rewarding book to read and complete, especially for people who don't read as many classics or who are starting to get more into classics, though clearly that is not you. I just read The Crucible this year and it was incredible, imo! I really enjoyed it and discussions one can have about it. Lolita is another favorite of mine! I tried reading it in high school and it was taking me a bit, I was struggling a little and decided I needed a break. That break ended up lasting years and eventually I picked it back up again starting it over. I'm so glad I did and it was such a different experience. I went from thinking Nabokov was wordy to loving his writing and language! And there were definitely things I was not fully understanding the first time, so the break was time needed to read other books and mature. Rebecca is another favorite of mine! I'm hoping to read The Master & Margarita this year; I just bought the book!
Very glad this video was recommended to me and I'm joining in with seeing your journey and vlogs of reading the classics on your shelves :)

This month I finally read Anna Karenina and really enjoyed it. John Steinbeck is one of my favorite American authors and I plan to reread East of Eden this year. Also have The Master and Margarita on my shelf and would like to get to it. Stoner is excellent and you should definitely read it. What I try to do is read a contemporary novel and then read a classic.

I absolutely should read more classics this year as well! And nonfiction. I don't have many though. Heart of darkness is one of them . Dracula is one of my faves! You have so many woooooooooooow. Lolita is on my list as well.

  • @ReeceChambers99
    @ReeceChambers99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes to the poetry! A '1984' vlog would be nice (any Orwell in general would be), and as Kerouac is my favourite writer (and I glimpsed 'Lonesome Traveller' in the video), I'd love to see his name feature in a future video or two. Any F. Scott Fitzgerald short stories would be good as well.

  • @joycemeijs
    @joycemeijs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The Yellow Wall-Paper by Gilman is still one of my favourite short stories ever written. However, I loved War and Peace too. Yet these are very different from each other. I'm reading 100 Years of Solitude this year too. I can recommend To Kill a Mockingbird. You will love the Picture of Dorian Gray, one of the most memorable books I've read in the fast few years.

    • @TheBookCastle

I think an Agatha Christie vlog would be really fun. I love her.
I have Drian Gray on my list of classics to read this year too.
I'd love for you to read and talk about Middlemarch, because it intimidates the heck out of me too...but maybe if you like it, I'll be persuaded to try it anyway.

  • @munglejoela

I feel quite good that you have loads of unread books too, mine are getting to a ridiculous level. I feel the same as you about Middlemarch. The Year of Reading Dangerously by Andy Miller is one of my favourite books, it's a memoir about him reading 50 books he's always meant to read.

Wow, so many books. *East of Eden* is chunky, but amazing and I flew through it. Also I see you have *One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest* which I also really loved. Highly recommend. And do read *Rebecca* it is so good.
I've tried to read both *Middlemarch* and *Moby Dick* but I've put both aside because I could not get into them. And I'm also interested in reading *The Master and Margarita* . If you plan to read any one of those I might read along.

Gorgeous! Your classics book collection is simply divine. 📚 You have some beautiful editions. I can't wait to see your vlogs as I am hoping it will inspire me to pick up more classics this year.😊 Every January I reread Jane Eyre and I thought to read Passing by Nella Larsen next, but maybe I'll reread The Picture of Dorian Gray to follow along with you. Good luck on your project.🍀

OMG 🙈I'm also in the middle of vlogging about reading classic, but I'm only working on my penguin English library editions and decided to go from the longest book I have, so I started with Vanity Fair (900+ pages!). So glad to see you are reading and vlogging about it too lol. (also your vlogs are all just perfect, makes me intimidated to continue myslef's 🙈) I feel you on the languages in classics, sometimes we can't figure out if it's us or the book 😂Happy reading!

I feel like we are so on the same level 😄 lots of the books you highlighted are on my TBR this year too (looking at you, Middlemarch) and quite a few I read last year. I read The Makioka Sisters and The Master and Margarita last year and both were 5 stars for me. I hear you on Classics being rather intimidating! Please pray for me because I’m starting Les Miserables in April 🤯😜 it’s HUGE. HAHA. Other classics on my TBR this year are Brideshead Revisited, Frankenstein, David Copperfield, H G Wells and A Tale of Genji. 📚

Loving this! I also missed reading Classics and I have decided to read a classic a month. This month is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. Enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray: it is, together with Rebecca and Animal Farm, one of my favourite classics! Master and Margarita is fun, but weird as you said so I would recommend doing a bit more reseach when reading that one so that you understand the symbolism etc :)

Yes classics!! 🙌🏻 I also read so much more classics in my early 20s and some are still my favourite books but then I kind of stopped (reading them, not buying them obviously 🤪). So I also want to read more classics again, listening to them as an audiobook usually helps me 😅 and yeeees The picture of Dorian Gray! Kinda wanna reread that one now! I also need to finish reading all of Jane Austens books, I think I‘m only missing 2! Very hyped for this series 😍

I love East of Eden and I was a little bit intimidated by it but I was wrong ! Middlemarch is awesome but promise that you won't DNF it because the first 150 pages can be demanding but once you're in it, you're hooked ! I also want to read Stoner (same edition) because I read Butcher's Crossing and really liked it so great idea ! I read Emma last year and had a lot of fun so do it ! I am a huge fan of Bulgakov but The Master and Margerita can be a strange experience (a talking cat, the devil, the trial of Jesus) so make sure you're in the right mood for it ! I love your classics collection, it's huge and amazing ! I have many of them and my 2022 resolutions was actually to read as many Classics as possible from my TBR so we are on the same train ! Have fun 🙂

I love this idea of yours! Two classics that I'm prioritizing this year are: The Woodlanders and Far from the Madding Crowd. I want to like Thomas Hardy, but some of his very well-known novels sound like such downers. These two are maybe more hopeful. I'm hoping. Hopefully you read and enjoy a lot of your classics!

What a beautiful collection! Loved this 💖
I enjoyed Dorian Gray and I think it’s definitely worth reading.
I really recommend Middlemarch. It is quite slow to get going but then it’s really not boring and there are several storylines in it with multiple interesting characters.
And I’d be very interested to see videos on Agatha Christie as I’ve still to read an actual novel of hers. I’ve watched many tv adaptations and read some short story collections (Miss Marple and Poirot) but I’m a bit lost as to where to go next.

This was great, Alice! Loved how you defined 'classics' in a very wide sense. You've got books from different countries and genres on your list, and you included a broad time span of publication- it's fantastic! I felt excited watching this, and my mind was already considering which ones I'd want to read with you. I read Middlemarch back in college, I remember liking it, but it was so long ago. I've never read Emma, and I might join you for that. I have many of the same Everyman short story collections, I think they would be beneficial because they're a good way to try many authors at once. I might reread Rebecca with you too. I've got The Makioka Sisters on my shelf. And count me in for The Picture of Dorian Gray- getting my copy right now. Huzzah for classics!!

  • @tokyochemist

You have a beautiful collection of classics. Heart of Darkness is difficult for even native English speakers so I would avoid that one. On the other hand Jules Verne is really easy to read and is always a wonderful adventure so I would recommend his books. I also have Philip K. Dick on my TBR pile but not the Sheep one so would be great to see you read that one. I'll probably be reading Rebecca this year so getting to share that would be fun (for me!). So much more to comment on but I'll end here. Can't wait to see what you end up reading this year!

Any Agatha Christie is a win, I'm a big fan of hers. If you can get through 100 yrs of solitude, more power to you. I found it a very difficult book and did not enjoy it much. I just received Middlemarch and am excited to read it, I may wait for you to start. Dorian Gray is a good book, I read it many years ago. Classics can be intimidating for all of us. I'm 65 and get nervous about starting a big old classic. Good luck with your reading, I'll be watching.

Wonderful collection! I own some of these titles and more are on my radar. I've read one of Wyndham's and would like to get to more of his works. Rebecca is fantastic! I have quite a big Agatha Christie collection, looking to own all of them. I read The Picture of Dorian Grey a few months ago and although I liked the concept, I struggled with it as I tend to do with older classics. I know many people have enjoyed it though, so you might very well like it too!

You have a wonderful collection of classics! Looking forward to seeing the vlogs and might read along when you pick a book that I also have on my tbr. I read The Crucible last year and thought it was great.

If you’ve never read Rebecca, I highly recommend! Those bookshelves are crammed full! I’ve never read any Russian classics. 😫. Like you said, so many books so little time! You certainly don’t sound like English isn’t your first language (I’m American, in California).

Will definitely try to get to it this year! :D And thank you! I probably have more of an accent in real life, because editing helps xD

oh, this is so cool. i was going ot say I'll definitely read along but I don't know if I'm ready to read dorian gray xD
I tried to watch the film last year and it just gives me way too much feels. I'll try to join next read though.
I've read master and margarita in high school and I've been wanting to reread it for a couple of years now. also it's been my plan to read dracula around October for a while now too but I can't seem to get to it. there are always so many books and so little time xD
also, i think it might be cool to also do like a live show. even a short one. maybe like the day after the vlog goes up. cause you can see the comments/chat and like discuss it that way. but obviously, it's up to you whether that's smth you'd be interested in doing.

I read Moby Dick when I had plenty of time and it was wonderful to learn about life in a time people depended on whale oil. It goes into rope and life in those times so it isn't a quick read

Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. It's what inspired Dracula!

I love this project! Classics are my favorite. I am excited to read along with you. East of Eden is a thing of beauty! It’s easy to read and engaging, you’ll fly through it. One of my favorite books of all
Time!!! TPODG is so lovely & I am excited you are starting the project w/ Oscar Wilde! I will definitely be reading w/ you, especially the Russians, Agatha Christie, & the Brits (the Bronte sisters are life!). Anna Karenina is on my TBR this year, as is the Secret History. I am also very intimidated by Middlemarch :). PS master & margarita is so funny! I hope this project lasts a long while & you have fun! Oh--What’s your rec for a good place to start w/ Thomas Hardy?

Journey to the centre of the earth
    Lolita
    Pride & Prejudice
    Mansfield Park
    Frenchman’s creek
    To the lighthouse
    One hundred years of solitude
Daisy Miller & The turn of the screw.
Have fun with Dorian Grey. I loved that one.

I love Moby Dick - it is one of my favorite classics - but be aware that it is much more about whales and life aboard a whaling ship than it is about Ahab and his search for Moby Dick. He spends at least three chapters discussing the kinds of whales found in various places. I found it fascinating but I know a lot of people find that part boring.

Middlemarch is the best book I have ever read. No need to be intimidated, the old fashioned english is a bit hard for the first couple of pages, men så kommer du inn i det, en av beste bøker noensinne skrevet. Øst for Eden er også flott.

You pointed to a John le Carre book. My favorite of his is _The Spy Who Came In From The Cold._ Get it if you can.
Yeah ... I look at _Moby Dick_ and I think "pages and pages of whale blubber", and I get intimidated.
I see lots of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes on your shelves. You should try books by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.
Dorian Gray is a fascinating concept for a story. Great book.
Finally, you are Norwegian, I understand. Have you read any Ibsen? He's great, please read his plays.
