Sony PS3 "Fat" HDMI Repair - Faulty Console Restoration

  • We're finally working on the first PS3 restoration on the channel! I have a couple more PS3s waiting in the backlog as well. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are probably the most recent generation of consoles that I have any personal history with or interest in.
I got this unit off Craigslist with a broken HDMI port. While replacement HDMI ports are more easily available for the Slim, I had a hard time finding any for the fat model and had to order used replacements from China that were pulled from other faulty consoles.
This was my first time using my hot air rework station on an actual repair. It certainly made removing the HDMI port much easier than my previous methods of such repairs using a low melt alloy like Chip Quik with a soldering iron.
Preparing the board for the replacement HDMI port was a pain in the butt, more so that I was expecting. Practice makes perfect, and I'm glad I finally popped the hot air gun cherry. I look forward to working on more intricate component level repairs and improving my craft.
This project was a good test bed for upcoming PS3 repairs I have planned, which includes a launch model backward-compatible PS3 with the YLOD. I know my way around the system a little better and am more open to working on them in the future.

Its so shame... because as i know there is maximum of 1.75TB-1.82TB....

That's why they sounded like a jet engine when it ramped up.😏
Keeping them clean help's a lot with fan noise and overheating, I use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment Weekly.
I suppose I'll have to renew the thermal paste on my 60gig consoles (X4)!
      Never had one overheat, yet!
Even though my late wife💘 used to leave hers on with a game on pause, while she went out shopping🤦‍♂, a habit she picked up on the first Playstation in 1998 while playing Spyro!

I would suggest a continuous vacuum desoldering tool. My Hakko FR-301 was a game changer and I've practically stopped using desoldering braid altogether on through holes, and you can get tips as small as 0.6 mm internal diameter for those tiny pins like on the HDMI port. Single shot desoldering pumps aren't even close. There are cheaper clones if you don't want to pay for the Hakko but in general these tools are well worth it.

Hmm, yeah, fume extractor is definitely essential, I don't know how I got along for so much time without one. Now whenever I forget to turn it on, it only takes me a couple of seconds to immediately go for the on switch.
As for the through holes on the and the difficulty clearing them with braid, if you have a desoldering station, I find using that works very well. Even if you don't use it to initially pull the port out and still use air, adding solder after that and then going in with the desoldering gun to clear the holes works really well. Obviously first it's best to let the board cool down.

    • @BorderlineOCD
      @BorderlineOCD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

A desoldering gun is probably next on the shopping list. I had a desoldering iron (manual pump) and used it in the NES recap video but it wasn’t very good so I returned it. Never ending list of toys.

i use a de-soldering pump to release the solder from the holes, i stick the pump at the hole and melt the solder at the other side using the soldering iron and then push the pump's button, it's faster, but the board has to be in a vertical position

Hmm... You soldering technique is okay but you need a way stronger soldering iron. You can apply additional heat using hot air and it should help. I highly recommend getting proper soldering iron which reaches higher temperatures. You easily need over 400 deg. Celsius to work on lead free boards.

Dude fucking GREAT VIDEO MAN! Seriously this HELPED ME OUT TONS! And instead of completely editing out simple little mistakes that I run into all the time, you humbly explained them and showed how to fix the problem, rather than being a pretentious turd and making seem like you did a perfect job first try. You would believe how many other nutsacks edit out every single mistake. My apologizes to the masters that actually DO MAKE A PERFECT JOB ON FIRST TRY. They can help their badassery.. Anyways bro honestly great video, I immediately liked subscribed, your quality left no choice but to do so.
Sir, one more thing could you please post the tools you used and where they can be bought.
Obviously the TS100 is the only one I could make out because of your giveaway, but what about the heat gun, the brand and type of flux (you said yourself high quality flux is essential) the pliers you used, the yellow tape you used in order to shield the other parts of the board from the heat coming from the heat gun and Im sure you used other equip/materials i just can remember.
Thank you so much once again for posting a great and quality video, that is severely lacking from many soldering/repair youtubers.

I’m about to replace my first one on a ps3 and then I’ll work on my ps5 because it fell over and yanked the port so it’s wonky but does still work.

Stellar work, man ... another fatty saved from the "graveyard" ... BTW, can i recommend a desoldering gun, for future work? It makes jobs like these much easier to perform, especially when U have to work with ports or caps replacing ... A Heat Gun is also great, so a combo of the two tools - desoldering & heat guns - is the best of both worlds, i guess?
All the best again with your new house & keep inspiring us with your repairs & restorations ... and good luck with the upcoming YLOD repair - those dreaded NEC-Tokens can sometimes be difficult to desolder, but usually only those close to the RSX kick the bucket & give YLOD to the console ... Hmm...
Best method I use to deal with HDMI ports, is hot air and solder paste. From there, I would go over any bridges with a soldering iron. These consoles tend to have some serious thermal mass, and will take away the heat from any cheapo iron. Hot air & solder paste becomes your friends for these type of repairs.

Not yet. Always on the lookout for faulty consoles though so if I find one I’ll pick it up.

Hmm, nice video man! The PlayStation 3 in the video is totally different from my PAL CECHG04 FAT 40 GB console, it really looks like another console!

    Hi,
I got a PS3 launch version in great shape and wanted to change the thermal paste. Are still planning a video on a launch model? If yes, I would wait for your video, since it would give me a save feeling.
And what do you use to remove the warranty seal? Alcohol?

I was hoping you removed the heat spreaders from the CPU and GPU. I know you're very safe and methodical in your ways. I was hoping to learn a technique from you for the best and safest way to remove them. Love your channel. Keep up the great work.

☝️🤖 NOTE : You can't even play GRAND THEFT V on the original PlayStation 3 . Even after a system upgrade attempt .

Hmmmm..... With the 60gb launch midel also replace the thermal paste underneath the IHS plates. Thats the same dried out stuff as what was replaced by you. De-lidding the processors.thats what its called.

Hmm , it's funny, I had just bought a PS3 of that model, but with a completely different issue. Who knew PS3s could hold so much dust, amirite?

Hmm, that seemed pretty confident to not only put every screw and casing back but also reapply the warrranty sticker BEFORE testing the repaired system. 😯

Hmm, that looks like the perfect amount of thermal paste

Hmmm, I too have had mixed results with the solder wick. I usually have better luck with the solder sucker, even the cheap manual spring ones. I would like to get one of those fancy air power solder suckers.

hmm, do you think it's worthy to make a video removing the IHS from a ps3 console? i've heard that it's good to do it for changing the thermal paste under the CPU and GPU.

I thought I was going crazy when everyone in the comments started with "Hmm" and I didn't know what it meant lmao. Then the last 5 seconds made it clear
Btw wouldn't it be easier to leave the old solder in place, heat it up with the hot air gun and slide the new HDMI port in place?
