why didnt you just use shield instead of counter

also you can just dash out when he does the big circle that gradually grow smaller on 1st phase, you dont have to wait until the attack is over

Both work. There are tons of different ways to do this.
Counters simply allow you to block the damage and get back to attacking

Yes, but standing inside the circle let's you deal damage instead of just standing around
