  • Better Call Saul Season 6 has the perfect ending. In this video essay, I discuss why the Better Call Saul finale has the perfect ending. The ending scene with Jimmy McGill and Kim Wexler is truly a great way for this show to end, and it brings the world of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad to a fitting conclusion. Better Call Saul Season 6 is now on Netflix. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
Better Call Saul is an American crime drama television series created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. It is a spin-off, prequel, and a sequel to Gilligan's previous series, Breaking Bad. Set primarily in the early to middle part of the 2000s in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the series develops Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), an earnest lawyer and former con artist, into an egocentric criminal defence attorney known as Saul Goodman. Also shown is the moral decline of retired police officer Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), who becomes closely affiliated with the Juarez drug cartel to support his granddaughter and her widowed mother. Jimmy and Mike's interactions remain sporadic until their respective storylines fully converge. The upcoming sixth and final season of the AMC television series Better Call Saul is set to premiere on April 18, 2022, in the United States, and will consist of 13 episodes split into two parts. The second half of the season will premiere on July 11, 2022. The season will also be streamed on AMC+ in the U.S. and on Netflix internationally. Better Call Saul is a spin-off prequel of Breaking Bad created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Bob Odenkirk (Jimmy McGill / Saul Goodman), Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut), Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler), Patrick Fabian (Howard Hamlin), Michael Mando (Nacho Varga), Tony Dalton (Lalo Salamanca), and Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) will reprise their roles from previous seasons. It has been confirmed that Brian Cranston and Aaron paul's Walter White and Jessie Pinkman will also return in the final season of Better Call Saul.

Exactly that. It was cycle for him since the beginning and this allowed him to redeem himself for his wrongdoings, make it right with kim yet also allow himself to live whatever persona he enhabits behind bars. Its a perfect thematic end point in my opinion.

@@CortexVideos I think personally that he didn't make the choice he did to prevent himself from taking over and doing what he's always done, but moreso to hold himself accountable and prove himself to Kim. With 7 years, he would have gotten out of jail easily and once he was out, he wouldn't be a changed man because he'd still have nobody.
He took the life sentence because he needed to redeem himself for Kim. He realized staying in jail for that long was the only way to do that and have Kim realize he wasn't cutting corners anymore. To Jimmy, life is better in his mind behind bars with Kim than out of jail without Kim.
      Absolutely loved the show.

Jimmy wanted to get caught. He saw the signs, took note and ignored them. The second he decided to roll the cancer patient, it became clear... Jimmy had to prove to himself that this is a fair and just world, where bad people are punished. It is why many become lawyers in the first place. Jimmy had to show the system how deeply flawed it was. He illustrated that his sentence could be whittled down to a meager 7 years, then as if to give the justice system the finger for not going at him hard enough, he tanked the deal and took it on the chin for a sentence he felt was more commensurate with the severity of his crimes. He lost his freedom but gained his dignity and a certain reputation in the yard. He now knows who he is and is at peace with it.

I think the whole story of BCS is about Jimmy trying to balance his wants and his nature; between the Saul Goodman persona that ensured self-gratification and a feeling of being appreciated (which lacks from his brother) and his own nature of actually being a good and caring lawyer/brother. The ending to BCS actually put this two to a fulfillment with Jimmy confessing to his crime whilst being surrounded with the respect of his fellow inmates. In the end, Jimmy feels accomplished and at peace: what I think the whole ending of Gilliverse is all about. Walter amending himself by sacrificing his live to freed Jesse and Jesse whose finally liberated and be his own person, free from the people that entraps him (Walter and Todd).

I love how Gould and Gilligan made it purposely divisive, while also making it perfectly logical and earned. Jimmy (in his last turn as pure Saul Goodman) negotiating down to a shockingly light sentence and then blowing it all up is, from a "would anyone, especially someone like him, really do that?" perspective, a hard sell. In the context of the show and the episode, you can completely understand why he would. The three flashbacks resonate so much. With Mike, it's "are you really this shallow?". With Walter White, it's "you've always been worthless". And with Chuck, it's "we're always having the same conversation, you're never going to change".
In the end, he proves them wrong, and he does it so he can have some form of reconciliation with the most important person in his life, and live out his life free from the past even if he''ll never be physically free again. And on rewatch, the way you can see Jimmy and Kim reconnect just through glances during his confession is truly brilliant. He confesses that he saw Walter White as an opportunity, and exploited it to the max, and Kim is still wary that he's playing an angle. He talks about Howard, and she begins to soften. Then she gives him a look that pushes him to get it all out, and he ends with Chuck. And she and he both know they have each other again.

This sensational, epic series must be considered slightly better than Breaking Bad
The writing from start to finish should be the standard for others to attempt to emulate. I seriously doubt that any other episodic venture will ever come close. Peter Gould wrote and directed this gem and was the show runner from it's inception. The attention to detail in every scene is pure genius. Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Jonathon Banks and Micheal Mando should all have garnered multiple emmy awards. Yet not one of them have any to date. This not only mind boggling but actually laughable. This is Rheas first ever emmy nomination and I am willing to bet she won't win this year. Bob has been nominated every year without a win and the others were not even nominated. Maybe the emmy committee decided that awarding Breaking Bad so many wins that that was the limit for this franchise. It certainly is rather tragic.

I get it that the court and police were probably upset that they never caught walt or anyone else and took it out on him but it is still a reach to link saul to those murders as well as Marie in blaming him

the ending was perfect however from my point of view: 1) it would have been nice to see Flynn White to have closure with what Jimmy said about Walter not being able to do anything without him 2) Kim should have some sentence because the idea and plan to ruin Howard's life was all his! 3) I'm sorry but I can't stand Marie's character...but I understand that it was closure for her. 4) the end is beautiful because we see clearly all the characteristics for which we love Jimmy so much: he is nice, he is intelligent and he has a good heart and that is why he makes the decision to be honest before the Judge and tell the whole truth of his acts as: Jimmy and as Saul.

      1) Flynn would have been really out of place in the finale also what are you even talking about? 2) Kim confessed what happened to Howard but there's no evidence for her to be locked up, did you even watch the show? 3) Marie's appearance had significance, more than just her closure 4) Jimmy decides to confess after finding out that Kim came clean.

The ending was excellent. However, perfect for me was 7 years and Kim waiting outside the prison upon his release to pick him up and start over together. My theory: 1 year from today we will get a 15 minute clip, and Kim will be outside, waiting for him. They'll both be about 55. Saul, pardon me, Jimmy will have served 15 years, found some legal defense plus good behavior and be out.

I have no problem saying I was hoping for a lot more. I am not arguing that the ending was bad, I just don't think they pulled it off as well as people are saying right now in the moment (time may change that). There were many beautiful things about it but I feel it could have been done better. It was disjointed (the transition to the gene story, and that story itself) and, in my opinion, lukewarm in terms of what I expected from this show. I feel they could have done the exact same story ending, but made it work better at the least.

If you mean "Saul Gone" is a perfect ending in light of yes, it is far better to have death imprisonment as in 86 years verses being left thirsty in desert, than I can agree with you. Or yes having a seven-year sentence available therefore my acceptance of 86-years in prison is no longer on the table due to my ability to time travel, then I also agree with you. Otherwise, I cannot concur.

Are we calling this a perfect ending which shoved into our faces Saul/Jimmy clever enough to receive a seven-year sentence and in the same episode stupid enough to settle for an 86-years imprisonment? Okay. we have different definitions of perfect, I guess.

  • @martdb100

After skillfully negotiating a 7 year sentence in a minimum security prison he just throws it all away for hard time for life??? Why? Did someone slip a truth serum into his water? WTF! That scene of Jimmy driving in his car singing the Blondie song "The tide is high" was great. Jimmy was feeling like Jimmy again and not Gene. He hated Gene, but loved Jimmy/Saul. Running those cons with Jeffie gave him his life back...so why throw it all away? He wouldn't...the ending was unrealistic.

I'm with you. Big fan of the show, but I found the finale to be underwhelming (and with a number of things that strained credulity, at least for me). I thought the penultimate episode, with Kim and Gene's tense reunion on the phone and Kim deciding to confess, was terrific...but I hoped it would lead towards something more interesting in the finale. Still, overall, definitely a top-notch show...the creators, cast, and crew should all be proud of the work.

I personally DID NOT LIKE THIS ENDING!
This is going to be a long comment, but I promise that I will have you thinking about some points that you probably didn't even think about or even consider. It will be worth your while.
To preface, I am a huge Better Call Saul fan and a huge Breaking Bad fan. I personally was not expecting a big grand ending to Better Call Saul, similar to the one in Breaking Bad. I knew it would deal with Jimmy finally getting caught. This ending to Better Call Saul did not fit Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman, as a character, at all. I feel like they undermined how good of a lawyer he is by him just confessing during the courtroom scene, in a mostly exaggerating way, which was half untrue, just so that he can 'maybe,' and that's a HUGE maybe, get Kim off the hook despite her pushing him for the Howard scheme and breaking his heart before Jimmy transitions in Saul, fully. I mean, despite Jimmy doing all that and throwing the rest of his life away, Cheryl could have still sued Kim because of her affidavit - who knows, maybe Cheryl did sue Kim or maybe had a change of heart?
In "Uno," when we saw the black and white scene, we saw that the only color in Jimmy's life was when he was Saul Goodman. That was depicted by showing us, the audience, the color reflected in Gene's glasses. Insinuating that Jimmy felt "alive" or "having fun" while being Saul Goodman. And then, in the end, they portrayed it as Jimmy not liking to be Saul? Some people might say that's character growth, but I would disagree with that. The reason being is because when Gene sees that Marion is watching his Saul Goodman commercials, the color is still reflected on his glasses, depicting again that that is the only time Jimmy was happy by being Saul. And then he escapes, gets caught, realizes Kim confesses, and within all that, he has a change of heart? Like, that quick? I hate to break it to you, but that ain't character growth. When did Saul grow this much fondness towards Kim despite breaking his heart? And another contradicting scene is when Jimmy is on the prison bus. All the inmates start chanting "Better Call Saul." And Jimmy corrects one of them and says his real name. But then, at the end of the scene, he starts smiling? I get that that was his "Spartacus" moment, but isn't that confusing? Did he like being Saul or not? I feel like these points I am making are getting so overlooked, to be honest.
The last point I'll make is this - disregarding everything I have said, let's be honest with all of ourselves, at the age of 48, what person would take 86 years over 7 years in prison? Let's put ourselves in Jimmy's shoes for a moment, would any of you take 86 years over 7 years? Absolutely no one on this earth would do that, even with the crimes Jimmy committed as Saul Goodman. And some could argue that even though the government landed with 7 years as his plea deal, he would still serve longer than 7 years. I disagree with that because, 1) Bill Oakley says the judge always sides with the government's sentencing, and 2) when a government sets a sentence, that is final. It's the United States v Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman. Not anyone else. I feel like Jimmy painting himself as a victim was very fitting, and a point I never connected until Jimmy mentioned it. Obviously, Jimmy chose to be Saul, and he is the one that coerced Walt furthermore, there is no denying that Jimmy was a victim of Walt, despite wanting to not do business with him any more multiple times after he saw how powerful Walt got. It was a badass way to go out for Jimmy painting himself as the victim. Because, as Jimmy says, he always comes out at the top. Furthermore, it showcases how much of a badass lawyer he is because even he himself can get himself out of a life sentence in prison, despite Walt depicting how degrading of a lawyer he is. And if they went that route to the end and didn't undo all the badass-ness of Jimmy getting his sentence down to 7 years, I feel like they could have had a "come to Jesus" moment with Jimmy while in prison or when he came out of prison or maybe both. And I can only imagine how special that reunion could have been with Jimmy and Kim after he served his 7 years in prison. I mean, talk about a lackluster and a total letdown of a reunion with Jimmy and Kim - the two pinnacle characters of Better Call Saul.
Overall, I would say that 70% of the finale is a complete and total masterpiece, up until the courtroom scene and undoing everything they did in the previous 70% of the episode. Had they not undone Jimmy's great ability as a lawyer by talking his sentence down to 7 years from 86 years, that finale could have topped Breaking Bad's finale. A very disappointing, underwhelming, and contradicting ending to Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman as a character. I am still baffled by how they went this route, totally unrealistic.
