  • Better Call Saul Season 6 is a masterpiece. In this video essay, I discuss why Better Call Saul is a masterpiece and why it has one of the best final seasons of TV. They stuck the landing, but the whole season has been a perfect example of how to write and execute quality television. The Breaking Bad universe has come to an end but we will remember these brilliant shows and movies for years to come. Better Call Saul Season 6 is now on Netflix. There are heavy spoilers in this video.
    Better Call Saul is an American crime drama television series created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. It is a spin-off, prequel, and a sequel to Gilligan's previous series, Breaking Bad. Set primarily in the early to middle part of the 2000s in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the series develops Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), an earnest lawyer and former con artist, into an egocentric criminal defence attorney known as Saul Goodman. Also shown is the moral decline of retired police officer Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks), who becomes closely affiliated with the Juarez drug cartel to support his granddaughter and her widowed mother. Jimmy and Mike's interactions remain sporadic until their respective storylines fully converge. The upcoming sixth and final season of the AMC television series Better Call Saul is set to premiere on April 18, 2022, in the United States, and will consist of 13 episodes split into two parts. The second half of the season will premiere on July 11, 2022. The season will also be streamed on AMC+ in the U.S. and on Netflix internationally. Better Call Saul is a spin-off prequel of Breaking Bad created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. Bob Odenkirk (Jimmy McGill / Saul Goodman), Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut), Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler), Patrick Fabian (Howard Hamlin), Michael Mando (Nacho Varga), Tony Dalton (Lalo Salamanca), and Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring) will reprise their roles from previous seasons. It has been confirmed that Brian Cranston and Aaron paul's Walter White and Jessie Pinkman will also return in the final season of Better Call Saul.

    I haven't been blown away by a TV show like this in a while. In my opinion, Better Call Season Season 6 has stuck the landing and the season as a whole is TV at it's very best. Great props to Vince Gillian and Peter Gould for sticking with what’s fitting for this show, instead of reaching for a more “fiery” type of gunfire ending more reminiscing of Breaking Bad. That ending is great for that show, but BCS is it’s own story. Particularly coming off the heels of Breaking Bad, to dedicate six seasons to slow burn, artistic, nuanced, internal character development is just superb.

    This show is indeed a masterpiece that was able to crawl out from under the shadow of it mother masterpiece “Breaking Bad” and create its own identity. The Breaking Bad DNA is present from some characters and production techniques, but it’s its own show and not only not enhanced the BB style, but actually created its own. It was Saul’s origin story in part, and Gus and Mike were great to have back to enhance there own stories. But the non BB characters like Kim, Chuck, Nacho, Lalo, and Howard made it compelling in its own right.
    I loved how the season 6 opening “Wine and Roses” segment actually foretold the upcoming finish - from the Zafiro wine stopper in the gutter, to the Saul cutout in the dumpster, the the copy of “The Time Machine” on the table. Also the finale beautifully foreshadowed each flashback - Jimmy’s wrecked car in the teaser, Gene getting Ed’s vacuum repair card and calling, and the “Exit” sign in the courtroom. Just brilliant.
    Finally, recreating the smoking scene between Jimmy and Kim from the first episode to close out the series was a perfect touch. Actually the shadows fell in the same way in each scene but the light fell in different directions. And of course the added bars - incredible attention to detail. This is one of the few series that never really got lazy and cheated viewers in some way. Hopefully the Emmys will finally give this show some well-deserved love in its final season, as they did with BB and another fantastic overlooked show -“The Americans”. If there were better performances than Bob and Rhea have given I’ve yet to see them.

    Jimmy became Saul, not just to bury his pain over Kim, but also to bury his guilt regarding his brother’s suicide and the death of Howard. Had Kim stayed with Jimmy, he would not have broken bad, perhaps, but would have buried his guilt regardless in the Saul persona. That said; it’s difficult to see how he and Kim COULD have stayed together in the wake of Howard’s murder. Their relationship could never have been honest.

    Can we take a second to talk about Bill Oakley. It seems like he was just forgotten about at the end of the show but I’ve not seen anyone comment on how Saul kept his promise to him.
    Saul mentions that this will be the case that puts him on the map and promises it’ll deliver, even though co-councillor he will get the credit for negotiating known high level criminal Saul Goodman down to 7years + exceptional benefits. Yes that’s not what Jimmy actually served but it would have been if not for his confession at the end and it’ll be Ben that gets the credit for that. Repaying all the favours Ben have Jimmy him through the seasons. Masterfully played!!!

Since Monday I’ve kinda skipped around watching half of an episode of like a dozen different shows, kinda depressed about it. This has been my favorite show for 7 years. And it matured beyond my wildest expectations into some of the best writing, acting and cinematography that I’ve ever watched. I became more invested in BCS than I ever did with Breaking Bad and I NEVER thought in a million years that would’ve been the case. It blows my mind that people are upset with the ending and the season overall, it had some slow episodes that were incredibly frustrating on first viewing (black and blue, nippy) but they serve their purpose, and the rest is just so thoughtful and poignant and the ending is the perfect ending in every way, this sounds pretentious but I genuinely think this show tends to go over people's heads moreso than breaking bad

    • @nicklowe_
      @nicklowe_ ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The ending was not perfect, the big event that drove Kim and Jimmy apart was somewhat random and not entirely the direct result of their schemes, Lalo was killed in a way that i think was too avoidable for his character, Jimmy giving life in prison was arguably unrealistic, the Jeff the cab driver recast totally changed the character and erased one of the most anticipated ‘villains’ we were preparing for, they ‘wasted’ two episodes of the final part of the season showing Slippin Jimmy tricks that we’d already kind of been seeing. I would have preferred a more sophisticated end to Lalo, less time skips, etc. I don’t think it was bad bad, but breaking bad’s ending was flawless so we had big expectations

      Jimmy took the 86 years, not Saul. Jimmy redeemed himself. What's wrong with that?
      It fit perfectly with all the other unrelastic elements in this Universe. Perfect storytelling.
      From day 1 in breaking bad this universe was unrelastic. It's intertwined into the brand

      The only thing that bothered me was Jeff's recasting, it was a little rough to take however everything else was perfect, and it ended the way it should have, with Kim and JIMMY......No more Gene, no more Saul.....brought me right back to the very first episode when everyone's humanity remained intact. It was the only way to end this incredible show.

    • @JTCT371
      @JTCT371 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Youre right....Where BB had its symbolism, use of color, etc, BCS took all of this to the next level and put you in a position where you had to look for the last subtle detail to see how everything fit perfectly together.....Just like with other great masterpieces, there are those who go in with expectations and miss the point altogether. It flies over their heads.
      An example of this, while not a TV show, but a video game would be The Last of Us Part 2......All the haters of this epic masterpiece had expectations and when Naughty Dog didn't give them what they wanted.....(even though they did, these people were clueless), man the hate flowed like lava. Misunderstanding a final product at its finest.

    • @nicklowe_
      @nicklowe_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agitatedmongoose I really don't know what I 'want'. I didn't know I 'wanted' the BB ending. But after you finish a show, you're left with satisfaction or disappointment, I was left with disappointment. I don't think it's a good argument to say: so what if it was unrealistic, the whole universe is. Is about where the unrealism is focused. I'm pretty much fine with Lalo taking out all his assassins or firing perfect shots at everyone except Gus with very low lighting. I don't think it was deserved/in character for Jimmy to turn himself in like that, especially on the drop of a dime. If they wanted to go that way I think we needed a little more exposition surrounding that. So TDLR, it's naive to say I was hoping for some certain ending, and it's not a good argument to justify a show by saying 'well actually none of it makes sense'.

    Truly one of the most brilliant final season of a show, ever. Nowadays it's extremely hard to end a show without having a controversial, divisive ending, because no one really wants the show to end. The fact that Vince and Co. have twice nailed the ending just speaks volumes about their talent. It was a beautiful ending, Jimmy was already living as a prisoner in his life as Gene Takovic. At least in prison he can be himself, and finally has the respect of everyone around him that he craved so badly in "the real world."

  • @lewiskyriacou3012
    @lewiskyriacou3012 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you're spot on with the differences between the two main characters in each series. Breaking Bad looks at the Ascent of a criminal and the ruthlessness of the transformation. Better Caul Saul has always been looking for redemption, He justifies his actions on targeting a mark who he thinks deserves it. As he becomes a lawyer, he begins to try and be a good guy to make up for his past, but uses his Slipin Jimmy ways to give him the edge. He's never been a 100% good guy, but he's mainly been a scammer. Walter White was a drug lord who caused such pain and murder. I think it's fitting Jimmy is in prison but Walter ended up dead - Walter sanctioned killings but Jimmy's actions only indirectly/coincidentally ended people's lives. I think what's also key is how the final sentences differ. JIMMY gets a reduced sentence but Kim doesn't. Obviously she confessed but Jimmy ever the slipper, spun a story to reduce his own, proving that he was always the better con-person, even though at times Kyms conscience was becoming more corrupted hmthan his

    One of the greatest shows of all time with season 6 being one of if not the best season of television ever but one plot hole or maybe I’m just missing something where did saul/Jimmy get the diamonds from?

    • @leeroy265
      @leeroy265 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saul traded his cash for diamonds as they are easier to stash and carry around. Also very easy to cash in if he needed money.
      I found this - In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, circus performers, vaudevillians and the like kept their savings in "grouch bags," small leather or cloth pouches that were worn underneath clothing. Rather than actual cash, money was often kept in the form of loose diamonds, which were easily convertible into cash if necessary, usually at a pawn shop. Many times, it was in fact necessary to cash in those diamonds in-between traveling seasons, or any time when things started to get too tough and too lean. It was also insurance incase they got kicked off the show, or left of their own volition.
      If there ever was a carnival barker extraordinaire, it was Saul Goodman.

    I can't help thinking that Vince Gilligan has one last installment in the Breaking bad universe. Saul's life in prison would have unlimited potential for another excellent series. Any fan of Oz would know that. Just look at what they did in Breaking Bad with the ten murders in 2 minutes. Hey, I'm probably wrong, but wouldn't it be a beautiful thing? Then, again, why even contemplate trying to top what was probably the best series in modern television. I agree. A masterpiece. You've done a great job analyzing this series. Keep us posted on any future ventures you have coming.

    Great show. Suspension of disbelief is essential. In practice some of the cons and situations would work possibly 1 in 1000 times. The risk with the Huell con was so high. Chances are that the reality would be discovered during or after the event and both Jimmy and Kim would have been disbarred. May have been better that way...could have ended up happy together and just popping round to Howard's every so often to let his tyres down...would be a boring show though and Walt/Jesse would have needed a different lawyer.

    BCS had a great final 2 seasons, but it very nearly lost me many times in season 2 and 3 when it was far too slow and meandering for it to be an all time Great TV show.... I do think that for those years the writers really did not know where they were going....when they finally seemed to have an idea to focus on the show really took off brilliantly.

      I get what you are saying. However, take the Wire season 2,taken alone could be seen an impotent diversion from the main story bur when seen as part of the full tapestry, is essential and indispensable. Jimmy! Mike! Gus story so languidly played out, was to my taste the best tv writing, performance and production since sopranos, the Wire and Deadwood. Breaking bad is entertainment so good it transcends its form and becomes art. Bcs is plain art, inherently imbued with inspired vision

    Brilliant writing IMO.
    The writers managed to create a cult following so strong that even when they wanted to DESTROY Jimmy/Saul/Gene,
    they did it in such a way that they, the writers,
    don't cause friction or disdain from their follower audience towards them.
    It's GENIUS:
    How to do it without alienating the audience?
    They can't destroy him directly, so......they make him destroy himself!
    That there is just a stroke of creative genius.
    Not only destroy him in the present, but also in the past. They try all sorts of time-machine tricks to even go as far as to destroy him in our eyes in the past.
    Even if it means Gene breaking character completely.
    Even if it means Saul senselessly throwing a meager 7 year sentence out of the window & get what is practically a life sentence just to see Kim.
    They just can't do it themselves so to speak; so they get Saul to do it to himself.

      @@667link5 Well in short, I felt going in to the final season there were many intersting plots; Jimmy and Kim vs Howard, Lalo vs Gus and Nachos whole storyline. I expected this storyline to cumulate in some way to an epic finally but what we got was that each storyline finished one after the other and except form Nachos story and how it ended I was left utterly dissapointed. Lalo went out with a whisper instead of a bang, when I swa him die I was so shocked of how bad that shoot out was I thought it was a joke. To add insult to injury the I cant even begin to explain why I disliked so much the Jimmy and Kim storyline so much there are so much problems there in my opinion I can write an essay. Lastly the ending to Jimmys story felt hollow, he "confessed" for NO reason. Kim gained nothing from it except his honesty which she could have gotten it if he told her that in private. The sudden switch to approach to Jimmys charcter sucked, Jimmy and Saul are mixed they are not diffrent people. Saul isnt a bad guy and treating him like Walter White and Heisnberg.I was left very dissapointed

So I guy who obviously has a moral compass: saving the skateboarders from Tuco, remorse for the family of the western union guy that Lalo killed and even trying to stop Kim multiple times from going thru with the Howard scam becomes immoral BB Saul because his wife leaves him(for obvious good reason)???? No Skylar type betrayal with Ted, no being pushed around at a car wash job, no belittlement of his manhood by Hank, no taking a human life for the first time(crazy 8), no being cheated out of a billion dollar business? Clearly the writing in this show, especially when contrasted to BB was below average.

      Walt wasn't cheated out of Grey Matter. It's made pretty clear than he left because Gretchen ended up with Elliott instead of him, leading him to leave of his own accord. Walt has twisted that into being "cheated". He's an incredibly flawed and twisted character. I really don't understand people who think he's some sort of hard-done by sympathetic character.

    I'm a big fan of both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but the BCS finale is a bit disappointing. Saul confessing his own crimes and causing him to get 86 years in prison instead of 7 maybe dramatic, but not believable. There's no sane person would do that.

      So I totally felt this at first and, in a way, still kind of do. But I made a comment about this exact topic somewhere below. Ultimately, I think the finale shows the moment Jimmy decides to let go of the damage that Walter did to him throughout BB. Every character that Walter touched turned to ash, and those that didn't end up dead spent the rest of their lives running in fear. But Jimmy decided to find peace and stop running like the rest of them. What is unique about his arrest is that he found a place among criminals where (because of his history of criminal defense) he was actually respected. It definitely would have been more BADASS if he got away with it all and took the 7 years, but I guess, in the end, we are forced to remember that, as much as we all LOVE Saul, Jimmy does not want to be that person anymore.

In the cold open Saul asks Franscesca where she is going to be on such and such day at such and such time but he is referencing the call in season 6 from the pay phone!
