Both my teams conducted tests, independently, and verified this. Switching to wheels with black rubber treads greatly improved the traction. They had to adjust the design to account for the wheels being a different size.
I have found this also, particularly under weight when using a large attachment. One of our teams used the 86652 wheels and had amazing results, setting the Australian record. They are the most consistent wheels I have seen used in FLL.
The blue spike wheels is not good. It have a really small contact area with the groud. I recomend the Technich 62.4 x 20. Its the same diameter and better.
Yes- I have found the robot can drive perfectly straight. I noticed an occasional slight wobble when starting robots that use the ball caster (particularly when using a gyro drive straight code).
This happens to my team last year and we decided to use different wheels this year
