- Have you ever wondered how a single play can have a huge impact on the careers of some of the greatest football legends? In this video, we will explore how a fumble caused by John Lynch in 2005 led to Drew Brees’ shoulder injury, which in turn set off a chain of events that made him a legend in New Orleans and Nick Saban the GOAT college coach.
We will look at the details of the fumble, the surgery that Brees underwent, the decision that the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers made about his future, and the opportunity that the New Orleans Saints gave him. We will also examine how Nick Saban, who was the head coach of the Dolphins at the time, missed out on signing Brees and how that affected his return to college football, where he built a dynasty at Alabama.

Greatest moment in Saints history
Plot twist - that Miami doctor was a saints fan growing up 😂
I'm glad you added in the part where the only reason Brees never made it to Miami was the doctors failed his physical. ESPN and all them only say Miami chose Culpeper over Brees. And that was absolutely not the case. Saban has said they had the contract ready and everything agreed on. I hate miamis doctor's still to this day.
As a saints fan, I thank the dolphins doctors every day 😂
The dolphins have been jinxed since Shula was forced to retire, haven't had a playoff win in 25 yrs, ( longest active streak), and have not made a afc championship in over 30 yrs,
As DolFan I don't think Brees has as much success here as he did with New Orleans. Sean Payton was a huge part of taking him to the next level. Perfect fit for him
@@Shinobi33 has sean Payton won anything without Brees?
@@brando7266 no but his teams remained in contention. It always seems his teams are in a good place. Building towards something better. Even his Broncos squads.
I disagree about the Brees/Rivers thing at the end. If Brees doesn't get hurt, the Chargers would have resigned him and try to move Philip for picks. Rivers was great, but that 2006 team was built to win right away. They probably would have fared better with a more experienced QB.
Great point!
I thought Chargers GM AJ Smith really wanted Rivers starting & Marty gone. To Smith’s credit he didn’t whine when fired. He said he had it coming for the team not winning enough. Norv Turner is a great OC but has had bad results as HC.
I don't think AJ cared either way. The most important thing was having two assets at the QB position heading into the off-season. Of course they screwed it up by playing Brees in a pointless game in week 17 lol.@@r.williamcomm7693
And Sean Payton wanted to trade for Tony Romo, probably, probably, he would've won one with the Saints in 2009
@@jayoh2527 Payton only offered a 3rd round pick for Romo & Jerry Jones wanted a 2nd so the trade never happened. If Payton knew Romo was really good then he would’ve gladly given a 2nd to get a QB who knew Payton’s offense. In other words neither Payton nor Jones knew what they had in Romo yet & Payton blew it by not offering a second so it’s difficult to picture Romo becoming the good regular season QB who never won anything if he becomes a Saint let alone a Super Bowl winning QB.
Maybe Romo doesn’t thrive in New Orleans. We don’t know. But Payton got to one Super Bowl with the Bounty Bowl defense that was brutal. He should’ve seen a second Super Bowl when beat in the NFC title game by the 2018 Rams on the “no call” DPI. But 2010-2016 the Saints either got beat in Wildcard, Divisional or didn’t qualify for the playoffs. IMHO those seasons made Payton an even better HC (although he was suspended for 2012). But he never got back to a SB & he wasn’t getting to one with Romo whom he valued as a third round QB. If Payton got Romo he still probably signs Brees because if he wanted Romo to start then he’d have gladly given a second or even first to get his starting QB. Jerry Jones holding out for a second round for Romo probably saved his career. 😀
I was in the stands that day in San Diego. It was New Year's Eve. It was raining like heck, and knew immediately Brees was hurt bad. BTW, Lynch made the play, but Gerard Warren (#61) came over the top and landed all 325+ lbs on his shoulder. I'm just surprised Brees wasn't in more pain, and it's a miracle he recovered so well.
The Dolphins should be considered one of the most prestigious NFL franchises. The only one with an undefeated season w/ SB win, having revolutionized the game with of the best QBs ever in Marino, etc. Yet the mistakes in management and drafts have reduced them to a bottom feeder franchise :(
I think their accomplishments from the Don Shula era is what kept people from noticing just how badly run the franchise has been since Marino retired.
They haven’t won a playoff game since the Clinton Administration (December 2000).
I wouldn't consider them bottom feeders so much as mediocre, just like the Chargers.
@@chizorama they're definitely getting there. Last time they won a playoff game I was in diapers. Been out of college for years now 💀
@@ohmy...9007and haven't made an afc championship in over 30 yrs
Saints fan here. This was a really good video. Real butter fly effect thought process
Great video. From editing to voice over. These type of videos make me pull out the ps2 and do franchise mode on the old Maddens. Nick Sabin is in Madden 07, btw, if anyone is interested. They could’ve gotten at least one with a Nick Sabin/Drew Brees combo. Im thinking 2008 to 2010 around that time frame. Once the patriots and broncos got rolling there was really no stopping them from Players to personnel. Bill has always been a little more endearing to his players, behind the curtains that Sabin, while Sabin isn’t as Machiavellian but certainly more brute than Belicheck.
I remember NFL Network did a bit about Nick Saban and one guy described Saban as basically your classic a-hole coach but lacked the Bill Belichick touch to make it work on the NFL(so basically like Urban Meyer but less embarrassing)
Thanks for watching!
As Saints fan, I would like to thank those Doctors on the Dolphins who said no on Brees. Thank yall!
There's another team that was in the hunt for a QB in 2006: The Denver Broncos. They had made the AFC Championship Game with Jake Plummer but wanted to upgrade at QB, so they traded up and drafted Jay Cutler in the 2006 draft. The Broncos had a stacked roster and signing Drew Brees would have made them a contender for years to come. Mike Shanahan likely wouldn't have gotten fired after the 2008 season, which makes it unlikely that he would've become the Redskins head coach in 2010. And this is where the "What if" gets even wilder: If Mike Shanahan's career trajectory is different, so is the timeline for his assistents that he had in Washington, including Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Mike McDaniel, Bobby Slowik and Raheem Morris. In other words, the face of the league would be completely different today.
Did someone watch next week's video about the 2013 Redskins already?? 🤔🤣
And RG III
Then ditching plummer was dumb. They didn't need to rush cutler. Legally 7 n 5 but hey let's put a rookie in
Would that mean Redskins would still be Redskins?
@monophtalmos9633 Here's the thing (about Denver and Brees): In 2001, John Elway's father Jack was a scout with the Broncos. Right before he died (a week before the draft), he tried to push for Brees, but he was ignored by Shanahan. Fast forward to 2006. The Broncos hired Mike Heimerdinger to replace Kubiak as OC, and I think he wanted a bigger, stronger QB. Hence the drafting of Cutler. I don't think that him or Shanny would have wanted Brees if he was healthy or not.
Drew Brees diving for that ball after suffering a broken shoulder is the reason why Cam will NEVER be off the hook for not diving on the ball
Definitely uncalled for 😅 Brees knew they wanted another QB with a better arm, being on a short leash was the reason he dove. The reason Cam didn’t was because his footwork wasn’t good enough. Can’t dive if your feet aren’t working…
@@AremuJejeofdavillage i disagree he CLEARLY PULLED HIMSELF BACK FROM THE PILE
Sometimes it's really difficult to be a Dolphins fan!!....
This here is just one of the things that the Dolphins have done to make it tough..
Maybe one more time in my lifetime the Dolphins will make me cry happy tears again
This was a great video! As a Saints fan and season ticket holder and also I attended that Super Bowl this is all true!!! This was a great time for New Orleans!
Awesome video as usual man 👍
🙏 thanks for coming back
This is one of the best football channels on TH-cam. I can't believe you only have 17K subscribers.
The whole part about Hurricane Katrina just brought back an entire flood of memories from when I was a kid. I lost everything I owned. It's crazy looking back now.
Thank you. i appreciate this video being from new orleans NFL fans or people in general don’t understand the HUGE impact Drew Brees had on not only the Saints but also the city of New Orleans and the cities around it. Thank you Drew Brees
Man, we gotta get you more subs! I'm putting you on par with Secret Base vids!
It's a marathon, just gotta stay consistent. Thanks for the support, 4 real
What I've been saying
Such high quality content, thank you. I remember that year, felt scripted to have the post Katrina saints win it!
Yea, while researching I forgot they almost moved to San Antonio. Crazy times
That Saints team were Road Warriors though, remeber they played their “home games” at Tulane stadium that season, it was a sign of things to come.. 09 they win the SB
That was really good. That was at least triple digit thousand subscribers quality👏🏻 Good, smooth voice over, good editing and shots, and very informative
Great video! Great butterfly effect.
Thanks for watching!
Saban has even commented on this recently. He personally spoke to the doctor who did the surgery: he told the coach that the surgery was a great success and Drew would be 100% in short order...but the Miami docs had already failed Drew...Nick had a gut feeling that this was a pivot moment that he'd never get past..
Awesome Video. Love the content.
Thanks for watching!
Nice piece… “The Butterfly Effect” is a good way to state it.
Two thumbs up Dude 👍🏼 👍🏼
Best QB the Saints have ever had.
Your videos are so good. I'm mind blown. You've got NFL Films creativity
Appreciate it 🙏 a lot
We will forever thank that Dolphin’s doctor for telling them not to sign him.
What a great channel!
Really good take, I'm just glad things worked out for Brees, he was a class act.
Miami made a huge mistake not letting Saban get Brees like he wanted. Dolphins would of had a great team within the next two years.
quickly subbed. most excellent content. keep up the great work - and i thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
I’m from LA and lived through Katrina. For the record, Katrina was a direct hit on the Mississippi coast and hit New Orleans as a Category 3. The issue wasn’t the hurricane itself, it wasn’t that bad. The issue was the city/state didn’t shore up the levies properly and they broke.
It changed Alabama forever. Thanks. Roll Tide
Basically had Tim Tebow picked Bama for college Shula would have remained a coach for a few more years no Saban, had Saban gotten Brees he’d be still at Miami. What we are looking at is a swing of over a dozen championships or more.
Great video!
Drew Brees going to Miami is literally the craziest Butterfly effect to happen
Excellent video!!
great video my man
Great piece bud.
It is crazy how many what IF stories sports has had. The old look back and what could have been.
Absolute banger vid
🙏 Thanks for watching
An excellent player for the Buccaneers. But, the fallout the next season on is a nightmare for Tampa Bay.
Great video
Thanks for watching!
It’s nice to see a QB dive after a fumble against the Broncos....
a brady brees in division rivalry woulda be wild
Right?!
I like this take. Makes perfect sense.
My goat ⚜️
This was fire 🦋 effect 😮
Nice video
I will say this: at least Saban finished out his season with Miami in 2006--unlike a certain coach with the initials BP...
Can you tell me the violin music from 9:25?
"Break Free" by Fabien Tell. Link of the playlist of songs I use is in the description
As a Miami fan.Oh yeah we were a fucking pissed they didn't take breeze...... that DR set the pains back 10years
Very interesting video.
Kinda glossed over the fact that the chargers technically didn't even pick Philip Rivers. They picked Eli Manning.
If Saban gets Brees, I'm still not sure that he stays at Miami. I can see him and Pete Carroll switching places in 2010, with Saban going to USC, and Carroll (and John Schneider) going to the Miami Dolphins, where they bring the LOB to South Beach (and become the team of the 2010's).
Found the JXMY Highroller of NFL, let’s go!
That offseason the Buffalo Bills could have signed Sean Payton and Drew Brees but instead went with Dick Jauron and Craig Nall.
well done
This is crazy. Fing Miami Doctors.
After watching the past 24 years as a dolphins fan. I'm glad for Drew breeze that he didnt come here. The brass was a total nightmare back then. Drew breeze would have washed out long before, they turned the corner. Breeze would not have had a breeze friendly system like in no. People who say this a try to be reminiscent of only what if.. the what if is... why did Don Shula get forced out and had 30 years of suffering
The thing is that the system matters too. The Dolphins were a bit of a mess around that time and Saban is a Defensive minded coach. So what if Brees doesn't develop in Miami? It might've ruined his career
thank goodness Bress didn't have to be under the chargers curse
Alabama is the biggest winner of the Brees Butterfly Effect
As a Dolphins fan, this video made me angry, but hey we are a cursed franchise.
They are
As a lifelong saints fan, I wanna send my deepest gratitude to San Diego for not believing in Breesus
NFL and NCAA Forever
changed college ball more than the NFL
I don't remember Dante playing for Miami. I must be getting old
😂
Remember the wild cat offense
Marty Schottenheimer is just as much to blame/credit as Lynch. As was mentioned, the Chargers were already eliminated from the playoffs. The GM felt that Rivers should start that game so they could better evaluate which QB they should keep. But Schottenheimer stood to gain $1m in his contract if the Chargers hit ten wins, so he started the veteran.
I would think this channel has 100 k subs
Soon...
Pats fan: Mr. Lynch. Thank you so much for what you did back in New Years eve, 2005.
Lynch: Huh?
Pats fan: You hurt Brees. Because of this, he failed of a physical in Miami and came to the Saints. This also made Bama win 7 titles and gave the Patriots a dynasty.
Lynch: Excuse me but what the falafel?
If not for the injury, would Drew have stayed with the Chargers? More importantly, would the team still be in San Diego?
🤔
Brees got messed up gee wiz. They didn’t think that was unnecessary? 👀
I don't think the Lynch hit hurt him, I think it was the fumble recovery
Yeah but Lynch caused the fumble
Yeah #61 ruined that for Bree's. He speared him on the ground. He didn't even try for the ball, he just went in to hurt Brees. Sad they just can't play football anymore.
What if Rivers doesn't hold out his rookie year? 🤔🤔🤔
Great point
What if John Lynch as general manager had chosen Sean McVay over Kyle Shanahan? Perhaps the Niners are the heir to the Patriots dynasty instead of the Chiefs? And if only Dan Snyder didn't own Washington the burgundy and gold would have promoted one of their great assistants to head coach? Infinite possibilities.
Geaux Saints!
Thanks John Lynch for F-ing football for the last 18 years. Because as a Falcons and Auburn Tigers fan, I had to suffer and see Brees and Saban win 🏆 after trophy 🏆. Worst, had to bring Tom Shady into the mix. So glad those guys are gone
😂
Respectfully i disagree if Brees hadn't have gotten that injury more than just Miami and the saints would have come sniffing around for him. So he may not have gone to Miami or the saints
Very true
And if bounty gate never happens New Orleans nevers wins a Super Bowl that year. But we dont talk about that.
I am not sure this was a mistake. Brees went to New Orleans and won a Super Bowl ... Yes. But there is absolutely no reason to believe the Chargers would win a Super Bowl had he stayed. And while that Super Bowl in New Orleans may not have happened without Brees, it isn't like he won five or six there. And as for Saban, I am not sure he would have stuck around whether they got Brees or not. He preferred college and proved that is where he belonged.
incorrect. wasnt John Lynch that hit Brees. he only caused the fumble that Brees tried to recover and was subsequently hit in the shoulder by #61 Gerard Warren.
Brees isn't diving for the ball if Lynch hadn't knocked the ball out of his hands in the first place plus making Lynch the main player in his injury makes for a more compelling story than a forgotten draft bust.
Brees>>> Rivers Chargers gonna Charger
LT swears he would have had a ring if they kept Brees. I don't think he got issues with Rivers but I do think he became a bit jaded at the organization for doing Brees like that.
So in otherwise New Orleans you can thank Denver for your Super Bowl recovery
🤷♂️
And Alabama can thank them for a dynasty. Roll Tide!
@@jiveassturkey8849at best they can think Miami's team doctors
The Saints would probably still be on par with the Browns today if they never signed Brees, hell the Saints might not even be in New Orleans right now.
Man if the Dolphins got Brees, him and Brady in the same division would be nuts. But thank god for the Dolphins doctors, if they got Brees they would have won a playoff game or two. Instead, the blowfins haven’t won a playoff game since 2000 lmfao.
I was a dolphins fan, and following this closely at the time.
Nick can spin it all he wants; he was the singular reason that they didn’t get Brees.
And to the butterfly effect, getting Brees wouldn’t have changed Saban leaving. He was unhappy with being in Miami and would probably have left anyway. And it seems likely Brees wouldn’t have had the level of success he had in New Orleans in any case - it’s all about how Saban ran the team; his success would probably have been like culpeppers.
To the fans that still feel this was a big deal, I would argue that hiring Saban in the first place set the team back a large number of years and was really the defining moment.
Roger Bad-dell
Waw😮
Brady was just too good for that to matter
Quit dxxxxxxx rixxxxxxx
Ain't God great?
Roll tide.
He might not have become a top 3 all time quarterback.
Who is to say if brees goes to miami they do anything.
He probably would have gotten hurt again,
coaches matter.....
look at Michael jordan. college he was ok... then his coach woke him up... he got better a lot better..
again NBA. mj was yes great. but it takes teams not stars to win champions. again the coach told him u cant win alone. stop trying. again, MJ was taught new lessons and improved.
my point. coaches can help make great players also. drew bress anywhere else may not of succeded. look at Doug Flutie, should of been the starter in the nfl for decade + but never could get a coach to believe. i really think he done great. late in his career he did do great. when he was the starter for the pats
The Chargers could've had a diva who asked us all to respect sexual assault.
Remember when Drew Brees wore the name JACOB BLAKE on his helmet. I do. I just cant get on board with r@pe like Drew. He really respects that kind of guy.
Drew Maybe wouldnt have gotten a ring
Or... maybe Sean Payton wouldn't have gotten one
@@AnotherSportsChannel i doubt it but blame Sean Payton not getting more by his lack luster coaching n also blame it on the penalties and he left to Denver and is doing nothing crazy
Just watching this makes me depressed. I didn't like Nick Saban the day he stepped foot in Miami and was glad to see him leave
Miami dolphins doing Miami dolphins shit go figure
It's unlikely Brees would have led Miami to a Super Bowl because Dolphins' ownership does not treat the team as championship potential. More likely, he would have been in Miami for one season and then traded off to somewhere else, whether it be New Orleans or some other team, and finished with a mediocre career.
L
The whole Nick Sabin wanted Drew Brees over Dante Culpepper is a flat out lie to cover his ass.
Saban did want Brees.
