Bought the Smallbox literally as soon as I saw your first video of it and LOVE it! It absolutely scratches my MIAB itch. I've had the BE-OD which had way to much gain on tap for my taste, the Dirty Shirley which I found to be pretty boxy sounding. The Smallbox is PERFECT, just a killer drive pedal!
I got the SmallBox pedal because of your previous video on it a few weeks back. When put through the Alpha ( clean channel) of my Bogner Goldfinger 45 W Super Lead it sounds INCREDIBLE. That amp by itself is an incredible sounding, versatile amp. The SmallBox pedal gives the Bogner yet another extra killer sounding channel . It’s like having a Friedman amp in a Bogner . Totally cool. I own a Friedman Pink Taco ( earlier version, no gain structure switch ) so I know the Friedman tone. The SmallBox pedal is so good I’m thinking about possibly selling the Pink Taco . Crazy, I know. Nonetheless, true.
Loved the Wampler, Small box probably next but gotta admire the flexibility the Revv offers. Bottom line, I'd be happy with any one of them on my board, great shootout Michael.
I’ve had my eye on the Smallbox since it came out. I’ve heard other demos but this is the best I’ve ever heard. You’ve convinced me to get one. I literally just finished purchasing it lol. It’ll be the last piece of gear I buy for 2020/1st new piece of gear to have in my possession for 2021. Not a bad one either lol.
All 4 sound awesome. I have been wanting to try the Wampler Plexi Drive mini. Recently got a Plexi Drive deluxe and I love that pedal. That D20 seems like a great amp too.
I would love if you could do a video on how you process your sound. Your processed tone is phenomenal. It sounds huge, open... Even multitracked. And that's not the mix. It's the tone I'm after, but can't seem to get, even with the same amps & pedals as you.
For years I had this notion that I needed to get my tones from just the amp. A pedal was sacrilege! I finally figured out that pedals add that special something to an amp. They key is finding which pedals work for your amp and rig. You simply have to get them and try them out, the results will surprise you! That boutique $300 pedal might not be the ticket, so you have to use your ears and avoid the hype. Michael always has killer tones btw!
They all sound great. For me here, it's between the Sinvertec N5+ and Smallbox. I just bought and receivedd my Smallbox and it's killer. So, the day AFTER it arrives [eyeroll], I see your vid for the N5+. It seems like an HD version of the Smallbox with increased and wicked options for beyondo tweakability. And two months ago I only wanted the REVV G3. Now I need the N5+ - - - argh Michael. I need that shit. I must get it now. Although, I am way satisfied with the Smallbox... I'll be getting the N5+ Chachinga AND HOW DID THE DUELIST END UP THERE!!! You're funny bro
Yeah, that pedal is insane. VERY open and extremely clarity even with maxxed out gain, which is also pretty decent gain. It's virtually a Pre-amp, so no matter what you plug it into, it's going to sound similar.
Wampler / Revv / Friedman all do that "cranked Marshall" thing pretty darn well, in isolation, they're all as good as each other. The Sinvertek stands out as the one able to do the SLO lead thing so convincingly. So for a live rig, any of the first 3 plus the SInvertek for leads, put them into any kind of amp or a Two Notes or similar & into the board.
@8:45 you can hear the Wampler and the Smallbox giving that right amount of plexi cranked low end sag and size where the G2 stays controlled and tight. Still big but doesn’t have that give the real amps tend to have. Not a knock as it could be a useful feature depending on what you’re going for. It’s like it was giving me more of a cranked Hiwatt vibe than a cranked plexi.
Great playing and tone!! If anyone might comment: does anyone think running either the Friedman Smallbox or BE OD would work into a ‘65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue/Vox AC15 rig? Or is that like feeding crack to a turtle 🐢?
There several OD's that have a similar sound to the REVV G2 and the Plexi Drive but the Small Box has it's own thing. I ordered the Small Box the day after it came out and it was sold out. Fortunately I got hold of a Dave guy hee hee ..so I have one. I have 15 Marshall-in-a- box lovely. The Keeley is surprisingly cool it is even more raw than the Small Box. Nothing has more gain than the Keeley if you flick the switch for a second gain It has enough to cause your amp to feed back and squeal like an open mic. Worth adding to your collection if you are a Plexi nut like me.
Can't decide between the Smallbox and the Wampler. Smallbox is brighter and more open, Wampler has more compression. What would be a better match for a 68 Fender Vibro Champ at home volumes? The compression of the Wampler might help compensate for the lower home volumes, but the Smallbox has the brightness to add some sparkle, and the ability to cut as much bass as needed 🤔
they all sound great. wampler or friedman less controls yet less tweeking to obtain a killer tone. kinda like the wampler toggle switch that puts like a ts before it for mid boost with a little more gain, but, i recon if it could be switch on by a foot switch, that would be great for solo's.
Thank you for your video, that's what I was looking for. I am about to take a D20 over a G20 especially for break-up tones. I am scared to miss the hi-gain range of the g20. Maybe with a Smallbox I won't regret the choice! 🤟😊 Seems that D20 makes gain pedals sounds like amps!!!
