Thursday -- March 16, 2023
Around 1975 or 1976 -- I think it was Early Spring or late Fall. It was brisk outdoors and the leaves were not on the trees. Brian Mcknight 's mother and I believe another family member - maybe his Aunt came to my parent's home after church on a Sabbath day. We all were or are Seventh day Adventists and we attend church on the 7th day Sabbath which is Saturday. From Sundown Friday to Sunset Saturday we believe it is a Holy day like the Jewish people. But, we are protestant and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Well back to the story -- Brian was about 6 or 7 years old. A bunch of neighborhood boys had come over to play catch. We were not to play baseball as we could knock the windows' out of the cars parked in the driveway of our home and on the street adjacent to our house as a nice size group of people came to my parents home on a Sabbath- Saturday evening. To go further into the story, the baseball hit little Brian Mcknight on the knee and he cried and cried. I think his brother consoled him as Brian eventually sucked it up and we continued to play catch. My father knew Brian's grandparents who had a large choir at the Seventh day Adventist church in Buffalo NY - or at least his grandfather conducted the choir. When my father was in Buffalo he would rehearse and sing with Brian's grandparents choir or the church choir. I think Brain' s grandfather played the trombone in his youth -- maybe - maybe not. Well years later Brian's brother became famous with the group Take Six while attending Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. My mother also attended Oakwood College in the early to mid 50s and graduated with her bachelor's degree which was a feat to accomplish for my mother a newly Seventh day Adventist came from a financially poor
background. Oakwood College which later became Oakwood University is an Historical Black College. It is also a Seventh day Adventist place of higher study. Little Richard also attended Oakwood College when my mother was attending the institution of study. My mother sold Adventist magazine to put herself through college with some help from her older half brother that we all adored. Well later in time Brian blew up into a balladeer. The ladies loved Claude and Brian -- brothers. "Back At One" is my favorite Brian Mcknight song. I got to meet Brian again with my sisters at a concert he held at the Landmark theater in downtown Syracuse, NY. We had one of his people bring him down to meet us as Brian wasn't doing a "meet and greet". My Uncle -- my mother's oldest living hald brother helped Oakwood College survive tumultuous times by raising money for the college with Tobacco crop money from many of the farmers in the South and from Cotton crops . Others helped in raising funds for Oakwood College in their own way. My uncle who was about 20 years older than my mother or 25 years older from my maternal grandfather ' first wife who had passed early in life -- never told the university of the tobacco money as Seventh day Adventist do not partake in smoking, alcohol consumption and other vices. Oakwood University has Judge Amos Brummell's name is on a Bell with other dedicated church members somewhere on Oakwood's campus.
Well when Brian became famous with either Motown or Mercury Records -- I told my mother about the little boy who got hit on the knee with the baseball and would not stop crying. I am about 5 years older than Brian. My mother's response about the two brothers success was "That's nice". My parents no longer paid attention to contemporary popular music unless I played the music in the car while driving them around. Well Brian you have done well even though I didn't get to grow up with you with the Buffalo NY Seventh day Adventists. My parents were proud of the McKnight sons -- but they were not phased. Well from the video above with Brian performing with "The Hitman" David Foster -- one of the world's outstanding contemporary music producers -- Brian and David Foster you sound great especially with Brian's falsetto in the middle of Earth, Wind and Fire's hit song co written by David Foster and produced by David Foster if I am correct. One day I hope to meet Mr. Foster and spend time in his studio with him. I am a classical and jazz clarinetist who by my father's firm hand ended up with a couple of degrees in Engineering.
