- How To Plant Tomatoes In Containers. It doesn't matter if you plant your tomatoes in containers, in raised boxes or in the ground there are a few things you absolutely need to do if you want them to perform their best.
Tomatoes will grow roots all the way up the stalk if exposed to soil, so plant them deep! Trim the first layer or two of leaves off and plant them as deep as you can. You also want to make sure you are planting them in really good soil with lots of decaying organic material, this is their food! Additionally, we highly recommend adding a calcium source for them to prevent that dreaded blossom end root. Here we use garden lime, put some in the box or ground a little ways away from the plants root ball, it will find it and use what it needs.

thank you for this vid Syd & Mike. when i was little (back in the 70s..), my grandmother wrote a book called "you can grow tomatoes" which can still be found today, many of the illustrations in the book were me. we planted so many tomatoes! this brought back memories i haven't thought about it many years.

I take it you would rather have tomato's for canning (making paste) rather than use in salads or sandwiches? I've got dozen Heritage plants, and another dozen Beefsteak plants growing in the basement. Still way too cold for them to be outside. Supposed to drop to 24 tonight and Thursday night. Hoping for an April 15th in ground date for tomatoes and peppers, then sweet corn once a week until July 4th. That way last pick date will be early October.
Anyhow, straighten Mike up, he's slacking again.
