Don Thank you for the tour of your 42' very reasonably priced home. I wish you and Jane only the best and look forward to following more of your adventures.
I'd like to have seen the rudder tube reinforcements you described.I have a 411 which had that failure, there was just a tube with no web support. I intend to rebuild with support and possibly a further tube of larger diameter surrounding and taken higher than the waterline.
Well done and a great purchase, especially with all that extra gear and maintenance history. I have always traveled overseas to buy boats because quite simply they are much cheaper than in Australia, there is a much larger selection and it's fun to start the adventure from another point on the planet. It's also pretty simple to remotely Australian rego the boat with AMSA. I used to work on those early 2000's 423 Beneteaus as a charter skipper and instructor - they're great boats and do everything well. It used to make me laugh when I'd read on the forums that Beneteaus, Jenneaus, Dufours and other production boats, are not 'bluewater' boats. Of course, production boats are built to a price point (and some models were poorly constructed) but the glaring fact is that over the last 50 years more Beneteaus have safely circumnavigated the planet then any other brand - by far!
Have to agree and this boat is rock solid....and an excellent build...there are a few little stress crack but that is boats...I am happy to sail this model anywhere any time etc... :) and they always get the human dynamic and livability right...all the best... :)
Congratulations and thanks for the info on your extensive adventure agenda. Hope you can spare some time for active sailing vlogs with the Beneteau. And talking through what we see. Always enjoy your views, comments en stories - the Hemmingway of ocean sailing...
Congratulation Don & Jane 😃 This new home looks fantastic and the planning for the next months (even years !) is very tempting so we will have fun following your adventures and all the events...👌✌
I can't tell you how chuffed I am to hear someone with your experience and knowledge big-up these production boats! So much waffle is spouted about how they're unsuited to proper ocean cruising. Having looked at 411 and 473 (which I loved, the 2cabin version has a vast walk in storage locker where the third cabin usually goes) I'm settling on the idea of a 2 cabin 423, if I can find one when the time comes! I don't know whether Beneteau built the standard hull and rig 'ready-made' for the inner forestay, or whether it needed additional bulkhead strengthening, but like you I wouldn't want one without it. Would love to see any future videos documenting your time with this boat, she really looks fantastic with some very smart upgrades, the best I've ever seen. How you find the time I don't know but thank you for this video.
Yes these boats are solid for sure and very happy with the rig and yes staysail is critical and this chainplate was factory done but would not be hard to add as the bulkhead is there if you have one cabin forward...so good luck...and look slike we will fit the survivor 40 under the nav seat...so all good :)
Congratulations Don and Jane! Take out and clean the cooling system!!! 10.000 euro if it fails. 1000 euro for a professional cleaning(take it out of the boat and open it) Regards from the Norwegian West Coast, EnJoy! :) 🙂
Nice Engine -- BUT -- I suspect that the engine has been replaced. There was a massive EPA lawsuit in which Volvo had to replace tens of thousands of those engines from that period due to non-compliance with EPA regulations. That looks like the new replacement engine probably about 4 years old. You can check the serial numbers with the owners manual. Big win for you!
hahaha that was the title of my very first Mag article back in 1980 lol...and I always explained my 1990 Solo BOC challenge boat SPONSOR WANTED as unsinkable like the Titanic...so yes that life hey! :)
Top buy , Had a 411 , Great boat , Many miles without a problem , Iast of the good Benes them models ,Shaft drive , Single wheel , BUT im not a real fan of those solent staysails ,Rather go to second spreader , One little drawback was the slamming to windward in any seaway but a good cruiser shouldn't be going to windward ha , No you have a real gem there , fair winds & Following seas .
Stoked you are both having a break in the Pacific! You are going to love Suwarrow, I also went there on account of Neale - hopefully whoever is the caretaker when you visit will tell you some of the real Neale stories, they’re quite interesting and unspoken…
Unfortunately the new Suwarrow National Park rangers are young fellows who doesn't know any stories of Tom Neale other than repeating what's on the internet and half of that is off the mark.
Hey Nick good to hear from you..will catch up eventually ...so good to be back in pacific hey!! and on the water again !! and yes got the stories from Toms daughter...lol....but looking forward to it but you know sometimes it may be better not to see the place and keep the Dream alive instead...still pondering that issue lol ...Life Hey!! best to the family :)
@@mcintyreadventure of course you know Tom’s daughter!! Enjoy the atoll it is incredible. All good here, Tobias is helping us build a house so all is great! Hopefully see you guys sometime in the not to distant future - fair winds!
Hi..tricky question as a boat is the result of many things..starting with budget....voyage plan and what the objective is? race or cruise or adventure etc....but you do NOT need BIG money to achieve any of those things...what you need is sailing experience on any and all the boats you can get a ride on then and you will find your choices start to narrow on what you like to fit your dream .....but one thing for sure...I would ONLY choose a boat design that sails well...not like a brick....I would also choose a boat that can face any type of weather cause you can plan a voyage but not control the weather and I would make sure the hull, steering, hatches and windows and Rig is really solid :) ...so good luck!! ....If I was single now @ 69 all other things being equal what would I chose??...this exact boat as I then have room to find another woman to join me :) ...and occasionally a couple friends :) as well... good luck!

What a beautiful boat Don - congratulations!

Great boat for an office Don!

Wow you got a great deal.

Good for you !
i am a single handed and have the same boat, same year, same state , same deal but 361 clipper instead of 423 and very happy about it
hahaah sounds cool...yes they were solid boats back then...have fun hey!! :)
In other words, you have a different boat.

Hi..thanks...no it is original :) all the best....Don
🙂 Best laid plans of mice and men. Tapio had a pretty unsinkable boat and that had to be a worst case scenario.

2:10 but you should start vlogging!! Great boat tour
haha thanks...only when something to say :)
Was the paperwork easy for the purchase and registration? Thinking of doing something similar but that aspect always worries me.
Papeete .....Raiatea brokers were brilliant and very helpful and we are going POLISH registry...very simple.. :)

@@mcintyreadventure Thank you. Sound advice indeed. Narrowing it down to UFO, SS34, or SS39 all made locally in WA.
@@mrrmut57 all good boats for sure...good luck!! :)
Modern Beneteau boats look pathetic compared to these . Fantastic deal as well .
For sure up to these models are very well engineered...solid...
I hate Volvo Penta,Yanmar any day.
