I would probably be loving it if the tension wasn’t a huge problem for me. It irregularly makes the error e4 and c4 and I can’t seem to regulate it right. Can you please help me out on how to do it right? There is no real pattern to when it acts strange. Pardon my language skills. I’m Danish and my vocabulary is not that great.
Oh and ps. The spool doesn’t seem to matter no matter if I put in on the horizontal or the vertical thingy.
Charisma Hornum-Fries hi Charisma! I would be sure you have your thread spool on the appropriate holder. Then adjust thread tension on the thread tension dial to see how that affects your sewing. Have you looked up the error messages in your machine manual? Is the thread messed up in the top or bottom of your sewing? You might want to watch my videos on setting up the bobbin case and carefully review the video on threading this sewing machine. Make certain you have everything threaded correctly first then sew only on woven cotton in straight stitch until you get it working properly. You might also consider changing your machine needle if you haven’t done that in a while. Sorry for the long delay in answering. It was a difficult month here in March ❤️
I bought my machine from Aldi as a retirement gift for myself . I love this machine,thank you for sharing a visual demonstration so much better than reading all the way through the manual. Just got to get to grips with the pesky needle threader now. Greetings from the UK.
Oh I'm so happy it helped! Just fiddle the needle up and down to get the auto threader to work. You are not technically supposed to crank the hand wheel away from you, but sometimes you need to move it a smidgen to get it in the right spot for the threader to work. Just be gentle about it and I'm sure it's fine
This is exactly how I got my Singer Brilliance few years back but I can't sew to save my life :D So I am gonna learn now, thank you!
You can totally do it!! The fabric napkins are a great project and the Christmas napkins and Christmas tree project are also wonderful projects. I'm so happy you found me!

He said that Singer Brilliance 6180 Is the top end model with sturdy body ,and also works on jeans,.

You're welcome Suneetha! If you want to sew jeans or anything heavy, I would suggest a Singer Heavy Duty style of machine. Or if you have the money and can get one, a Juki machine will last you forever. Whatever you get, you want something that works with a double needle for sewing jeans. I like my Brilliance machine, but it is a light duty machine. Anyone who tells you otherwise either knows nothing about sewing machines OR is trying to take your money.

I bought one of these adorable little machines. I am a beginning sewer. My late mom had an old school Singer. This machine has more stich choices than my mom's had.
Overall, I really like how light weight this machine is. The thread setup has thrown me off. So thank you for pointing this difference out.
You're welcome!! I enjoyed using my Brilliance and it got me back into sewing, so I'm grateful for that. I've since gotten my mom's older kenmore fixed and upgraded to a Singer Patchwork...which is basically the Brilliance only with a few more options. Enjoy your projects and sewing!!

That's great you got the new machine! Well, it does take some practice and you will want to try a few different things to see what you like making. There are so many options there so you should experiment a little bit over the next year. Remember to have some fun with it!!

Hi from germany, i got this machine today at our local LIDL. It was the last one and it was just looking at me saying "pleeeeaaasssee buy me" So i did 😅 I haven't tried everything so far but i already love my new brilliance ❤

I bought a Singer Brilliance when I was 27 and I am now 38. I use it as a full time sewer and I have nothing to complain about. Sewing machines need to be taken care of then they will last longer. You are correct, you can't break the bank. So I totally agree with you 100%.
Thanks for sharing your story!! That is a great lifespan for any machine! I am very happy with mine. My backup machine, an older Kenmore, has developed an issue with the feed dogs so I need to take it over to the repair shop and see what that will cost to fix. I do like have two machines for different things. And in case one goes down, I still have the other one. So far so good on this little Singer.

You're welcome, Brandon! I'm glad it helped you. This is a very lightweight machine, so unless you do light sewing, I would not suggest it. The Heavy Duty model is considered the best value and product from Singer as long as lots of decorative stitches are not important to you.

I think it's a great little machine! I put a walking foot on it and use it for all my quilting or anything that uses a walking foot. It's been great for that.

Hi Patty, greatings from the United Kingdom! This is a coincidence, I bought my Singer Brilliance from Lidl on a whim too, about 3 years ago because I am 4'11 tall and I always have to shorten my jeans or pants. Mine cost me a bit more than $99 though, I paid £120 or £130 which at the time I thought was worth every penny. Now I am having some problems with it and it may be the spools according to your video, I have to test it with different thread. Thank you for your demo and stay safe.
Hi Alex!! You might need to buy heavier duty needles, and YES the thread! Oh my goodness. The thread makes such a difference. Not only the spool but the type. I would suggest getting the more expensive cotton threads, because the machine sews so much better. And if you haven't cleaned and oiled in a while, it might be time. I have a new video on that as well. I also put in a new bobbin case and fresh bobbins. I want this little machine to last me a while, so I really do take care of it. Cheers!! I was looking for computerized sewing machine because the one that I have is not. I came across this at Michaels so bought it today while questioning myself and wondering if I made a good choice. Although I got it for a little over $99 I’m now sure that a made a good choice. Thank you for sharing this video! 😊
I saw that Michael's started carrying these! I've been really happy with mine. It's a light weight machine, but I've used it for everything the past 15 months and it's been a great little machine. Happy Sewing!
I have a new Singer 2277 machine which I have not used yet while still collecting the tools and accessories for sewing and I am a beginner and want to get good at quilting and making some clothes for myself. I worked at a prison and got use to working with the Singer, and Juki brands as those was the brands used by the prison system. I will only be using two main stitches for doing most of my work and the button hole stitch and the rest are just luxury in my opinion.
Thank you for your thoughtful input, Sidney! Yes, for garment sewing in particular, all you really need are a couple of stitches. I love using decorative stitches, so I enjoy having that feature. My dear friend I’ve got a Sears Kenmore, from 1982 , that I bought for $99.00 ! It was my first machine & I wouldn’t trade it for the latest model! Why you ask , this sewing machine has a tension that you can adjust accordingly to the thickness of materials you’re sewing, the other sewing machine my son bought me is made of plastic, doesn’t have this feature but does have the needle adjustment! My Kenmore is metal built , still use it for quilting & stuff like that ! The other machine is also a Kenmore .

Hey Patty, very nice video. The same machine is 189€ in Germany at Lidl and already sold out. Lidl says it dropped from 379€. The price difference is just unbelievable.
As we say in America, Holy Cow!! That's expensive!!! I think I got mine as the deal of the century, to be honest. Which is why I grabbed it. It was too good an offer to not bring it home. I hope you enjoy your machine!
In Portugal it's 349 euros, if I had paid that amount i would scream my lungs out, its to stupid,some time's it's scared the hell out of me,i think she's got life of her own 😕😕😕

I was given this machine about 3 years ago because the owner said she was throwing it in the dumpster if I don’t want it. I have been using it ever since. Now mine is not the brilliance so it is probably the model prior to the brilliance?? I am just self taught so this is perfect for me. I make dresses, bibs, soft toys, diaper covers, shorts for my granddaughters. I have also made a quilt but it was the quilt as you go. Thank you for the video as I learned new things even though I’ve been using the machine for a while. Hopefully I will find a video by you showing how to do a button hole. I have the foot to do that but I can’t get it to work correctly. Thanks again for this video. I have subscribe daily to your channel because you are an excellent teacher.

I've received my sewing machine since I last commented and I have already transformed an old dress of which I didn't like the fit, and finished a punch needle piece into an envelope pillow sham. I am now shopping for fabric to make a circle skirt with the sew along of the channel Anita by Design. Between your channel and hers I'll be wearing my own clothes in no time! PS. You're right about the flowers being European looking! I will definitely be making an orange (the nat'l color of the Netherlands) dress for Kings day/World Cup/Olympics with the tulip decorative stitch! It'll be fantastic since the tulip is our national flower.

Thanks, I wanted to see the difference between my Heavy Duty and your machine. I sew a lot of denim and heavy things so I'm glad that I chose the one that I have, mine also has a built in needle threader.
Yes for sure! You definitely chose the proper machine. That one is a BIG difference from this one. I don't think this little machine would last long sewing denim.

@@manseurnaima1485 I have the 4432, I use it everyday and have no problems at all. There are so many attachments that you can get off of Ebay. I just made a Jelly Roll rug, have quilted and made a shirt with buttonholes and haven't had a single issue.

I picked mine up from Lidl as well just by chance. Like you, I was walking by, saw it and gave it a chance. It's a great machine but I wish it had a bit more power. Other than that, it's a great machine. I'm enjoying it.
It is definitely a very light weight machine. I have recently gotten a Patchwork to use as my main main so the Brilliance is my backup. I put the walking foot on it and use it now for the quilting work I like to do. This way I don't have to keep changing out that big presser foot. But it would not have the juice to do more than that. I got this one so inexpensively, so I feel like for the $99 I spent, it's well worth it. The heavy duty machines are pretty highly rated for heavier sewing and they are not too expensive. So you might want to consider one of those

I bought mine Singer 6180 at Lidl Lisbon Portugal for 145,00 EUROS!! very happy with it , less happy now I know I payed to much!
Gosh, I don't know Stella. The costs in Europe are so much higher than here. I would compare the features of your machine to other machines in your country and cost compare that way. I think we have to see what similar items in our own countries cost to figure out if we over paid or not. Lidl is very inexpensive here in comparison to other stores and I would assume it's the same in Lisbon. If you enjoy the machine, try to focus on that. Thanks for sharing your experience! It's so interesting to have a sewing machine that people around the world are using!

I bought mine here in germany at Lidl also for 145€. But it's still a good deal. Usually the Singer Brilliance is around 230-250 € .
My brother (@$150-) is very similar to yours. I did a lot of research for my needs. Mine also has an extension table, auto ndl threader, a feature that helped sell me. (which works off & on & that is the consensus among many on youtube & most just do it manually) A lovely smart lady at Joanns showed me how to do it correctly, I went home & did over & over, was so happy but now it doesn't.. Oh well I just get a giant mag to see the hole but it strains me. Mine has the up/down ndl button & a button for a 2 st back tack. The biggest seller though was a button for auto sew.....no need for foot pedal (physical reasons). Mine comes with a quilting foot but according the manual if I want to do free motion (probably when our town freezes over) I have to order one. I really like the machine but still not doing much with it other than day dream. Any classes in town you have to take your own machine & I'm unable to haul it around (sad) & Joann's doesn't always have the one with the auto sew. I think It's because I'm not good with machines that I procrastinate. In the office world I could never fix any of the break downs for copiers etc. but most women could tackle it. My Mom battled an old Singer for decades, I mean she had her own special tool box for it for operating procedures haha. I know I'll get motivated but it's also a mood thing. Sorry for the length. This little machine does not have the auto sewing. It's very basic. But I have enjoyed it. It is a good way to try out an electronic machine and to try out the quilting stitches. I have a rolling bag I use to haul my own machine, but if I am going in to Joann's I just use their machines in the sewing area. But I'm ok to use the foot pedal. I'll have to double check the Patchwork when I go back over and see if it has that feature. I I don't think it does. This came with the cover that goes over the feed dogs to do free motion quilting, but I don't see me doing that. I have done stitch in the ditch projects. I am planning to put those together to share on the channel over the coming months. Filming with the sewing machine is totally different from filming knitting tutorials, so it's a learning curve to figure out how to show the sewing process. The needle threader is a little touchy, and sometimes you have to adjust the needle a little with the flywheel to get it into the right position. Once it's lined up, it works well for me, and I don't miss trying to thread it by eye.

What a great analogy!! It is kind of the same thing! And one thing I've learned with sewing, is that it does take some tinkering to get things to work sometimes!

I'm so happy it was helpful for you! I have a few videos on this machine and most of the general sewing information like choosing thread and thread tension etc applies. You should just get a bunch of scraps and sew all sorts of things playing with the stitch settings and exploring the presser feet.
Hi Patty. This is so great so patient and nicely explained. I don't know how to stitch back-stitching, eg go backwards with the machine?
Back stitching is how to lock in your stitches at the beginning and end of a stitch line. On this machine, you press the little button just to the right of where you thread the upper housing. You only do a very little bit, like 3 or 4 stitches. Hope that helps!

Wow, 90 days return policy for LIDL USA! Here in Portugal it's just one month! The good thing is that LIDL has a "no questions asked" attitude! Yet, here they never carried SINGER machines, only their brand (Silvercrest).
I agree with you: - folks, get a new machine! I know from bitter experience what it is like to have a good old days "heavy dutty" metal machine, no plastic, bla, bla, bla, but having no way to repair it if it breaks up!
I have a Singer Symphonie 500, from the 90's, from France. It was one of the first computorized Singer machines, it sews at the touch of a button without the pedal (of course, it also sews with the pedal if you prefer to). It is a "Rottwiller", sturdy and so, oh, so heavy (8kg). It's a workout pulling it out from the cupboard and on the table, lol! After all these years, it started to malfunction, I contactd SINGER Portugal and was told, sorry, do not have pieces and bits to subsitute the faulty ones, cannot be repaired, take it to the landfill...
Due to budget, I got a LIDL own brand one, a Silvercrest mechanical, for 79,99 euros.
It has lots of utility and decorative stitches, and is ok, but I really miss the convenience of a computorized machine...the modern SINGER ones with automatic sewing are so expensive, and I really want one that sews without the pedal. Am also looking into the BROTHER ones, they have very nice machines too, but also expensive...

Excellent video. All I need now is something to remind me to check what side of the fabric I am working on. Having the inner/outer seams reversed at each end of the work I'm calling a 'feature'. :) Silly sausage.
Some people call right side pretty side, so that might help you to remember. Reversing everything is one of the hardest concepts in sewing, I think.

LOL!!!! Thank you!! I mention our current state of affairs in a passing way, but goodness, don't we already get enough of it? It's so weird all of a sudden. So yes, I definitely want to be a break from all of that. I'm so happy the machine tutorials are helpful. There are some out there, but not too many in English, so I thought it might help people if I started making them. I'm planning some beginner project tutorials, so hopefully you can make those with the supplies you have. And no, I'm not doing mask making tutorials. I am fatigued by them, and I am not making any of them for my channel. I'm sticking to normal projects and easy recipes and some gardening information. I love my garden and I've been getting tons of questions from people about what they can plant. If you have specific machine questions, I can try to answer them.
LOL hunger games over sewing supplies.. I love this video. Im about to go pick it up on the curbside from michaels. Ive ordered thread and elastic bands from amazon but itll be years before I get it. So im gonna use hair ties. Im trying to make masks to donate to the hospital. I hope I dont break this machine. Thanks for this awesome video!!
@@x0xkikix0x Thank you for watching!! Stay safe out there! I have sewn some masks on it, and it does struggle a bit with too many thicknesses of fabric. So I would not sew gobs of pleated masks to donate. I would use a different pattern to preserve the machine. I have a new blog post up with tips and info and links to popular patterns if you are interested. I'm going to film my own video on the masks I've made for us to wear. I will publish that one this week. Someone posted a picture of the line waiting to get into my local Joann's and it was INSANE. That store is never all that busy, and now it's MOBBED.

I had a old singer my son found I try fixing it you want believe that needle went down my nail hurt so bad but I love my new machine thanks.
You certainly want to be careful when working around the needle! I recommend unplugging the machine completely and removing the needle anytime you are working in that area. I hope you are ok!
Great video, i have a similar one, when i sew the beat sound seems like a hard hammer, what could be?
I don't hear anymore that soft sound when i sew.
I would suggest giving the machine a good cleaning and change your machine needle if you haven't done so in a while. You might try adjusting machine tension and see if that also helps. Usually that banging is a tension issue. I hope that helps!

Hi Mindy! I would watch the videos on threading both the machine and the bobbin, and also watch the video on thread types. This machine is a horizontal feed and needs a different spool than the typical thread spool we associate with sewing. Also, cheap thread is not your friend. A good quality, 50wt cotton thread for your woven fabrics is the best way to go. Gutterman cotton thread is widely available in the craft store. I swear by the Craftsy brand but they are closing down the business so I will need another source to buy from. Try getting the higher quality thread, rewind the bobbin and start fresh, and see how that goes. Let me know the outcome! And if you still need help. I do have plenty more tutorials planned, so stay tuned!

You should really read your machine manual for the best instructions. Every sewing machine brand tends to vary quite a bit from one another, and is likely to have different cleaning and lubrication requirements than the others. Do you have the same Singer or a different machine?

I don't do live videos because the quality is so terrible. I like my videos to be clear and be something people can watch for information for years to come. I did not go over the foot pedal, but showed the stitches and the machine sewing in this one. I'm not sure why you are so interested in seeing the foot pedal, Frank. People generally understand that is now these machines operate.
I even got that big pad and ruler..thanks ant find no book I got a old one from good will...I been looking on Amazon hard to get a up to date one.

I bought mine a few years ago, but just pulled it out to make masks. So been at for a week or so. Had to read the instructions because I never had back stitch with a button. Was so used to my very old Singer machine, but the repair man could not get the gears to work right. So I am a novice with this machine. So far I like it. I prefer using a knee pedal though. The foot pedal keeps slipping away! I use a side lamp as well. The machine light is not that great I agree.
Oh yeah!! The foot pedal does tend to slip around. lol I haven't tried the knee pedal, but I know a lot of people swear by them. The instruction book is a good source of information, so good thing you kept it. Are you sewing on this same machine? I like this machine, but it's not a heavy duty one. I love that I can move the needle left and right which is the main reason why I bought it. I like to sew zipper pouches and being able to move the need to the edge is so helpful. Now I am doing small quilt style projects that use a 1/4" seam allowance. I find I can set the needle into its position and use the edge of the presser foot to keep the seams straight. Even in the daylight, I use that desktop light. I also have a video on how I set up my small sewing space that you might like. I do hope you will continue sewing along with the channel even after your masks are all made up. Thanks MaryAnn!

I parents bought me this machine when I was maybe twelve years old. I couldn't figure out how to thread it and I got bored, but I carried it from closet to closet with me for years. Hi, so good to find you here, as I have this machine brought I possibly 3yrs ago now, guarantee has expired ,never used until now. I am having problems with the under stitch where it is not feeding through the material & clogging up the under thread. The bobbin casing did come out once & I think I replaced it correctly, locking the 2 levers back in place...Still no joy, can you help me please???
It sounds like a tension issue which could be a few things. If the machine isn't feeding, then maybe the feed dogs are not working correctly. I'm not really sure without seeing it in person. Check and see if your feed dogs are working and if they are ok then get new thread. Get good thread and I would suggest starting with cotton thread and stable cotton fabric to work out your issues. I hope that helps! I do have a few videos on choosing thread and threading the machine so you might want to review that information too.
Thanks for the video for everyone. Two things I found hard to understand. "Turn the knob towards you." both ways are towards you because its round, soooo clockwise or counter clock wise. I'm left handed so things for me to is hard to use. The other was threading the needle. In investigating I finally figured out there is a tiny wire that sticks threw the eye of the needle I couldn't see because of my aged eyes. My daughter used this for school and I guess put a longer needle in it and maybe the automatic threader was pushed up to making that wire to go the side missing the hole. it was so frustrating for someone that knows nothing about these things. If your wondering I only use it to taper my pants which saves me $20 every pair of pants. I'm short and hate walking on my pants. thanks again.
Thanks for the feedback Scott! Think of the wheel as being turned toward you from where you're sitting. If you're looking at the side of the machine, roll the wheel left. The issue with the needle might be that it's not seated far enough up into the housing. If the little hook isn't making it through the needle, then the needle isn't installed quite right. And yes it's very difficult to see! You might find adding some additional light to your workspace might help. I just make a new video all about lights in the sewing room you might find helpful. Being able to hem your own clothes is incredibly valuable! Thanks for watching and leaving a thoughtful comment.

There is no mention in the manual about oiling the machine, do you know if this can be done diy or do you have to take it to a shop?? I've also had mine for several years and started using for making masks and notice a little squeaking noise like maybe it needs to be oiled.
Hi Nanna! If you still have your manual, it does talk about oiling the bobbin case on page 38. I am planning to do it and film it. But if you have your book take a look in there. I bought good machine oil for my Kenmore a few weeks ago, and it's running so much better. I'm kind of excited to get my Singer cleaned and oiled. If you are not afraid of taking some things apart and are careful putting it back together, then I would say DIY is ok. But if you are squeamish about it, you might want to consider a shop tune up. I hope that helps! And I am planning to film and publish doing this sooner than later.

Hmm...this sewing machine was my favorite to get, but now I'm not so sure. I'm a total noob into machine sewing and a guy, so I don't expect that I will be making lots of stuff on it, but I wanted something to repair my jeans on or work clothes, the price here is 130€. I considered a cheaper option as well...some 80€ basic Singer version with 18 or so stitches...but then again, maybe my girlfriend could make use of the 80 types on this one, but she hasn't sewn for a long time, so it may just collect dust.... :)
This is more of a quilting style machine, and only for lighter weight quilting projects at that or small sewing projects. Denim is pretty heavy and requires specific needles and thread as well as a heavy duty machine. So I'm not sure this machine is the best choice for what you want to do. There is a Singer machine that is no frills but designed for heavy projects that would probably be better for what you need and want. I sew smaller projects on it and it's been great for that. The trick to buying a sewing machine is to figure out first what you want to sew and then get the best machine for that task. In all honesty, it's not the best machine in the world, but it was very inexpensive. So I thought I had nothing to lose with it. I hope to get 3 years out of it, and then I'll upgrade to something nicer that is better quality. If you all are under the same crazy restrictions as we are starting to see, it might be a great time to experiment with the sewing machine. Thanks for for your comment!

What setting should I use for a gather stitch?
If you're doing it with 3 long rows of stitches , set it to the basting stitch which is the longest.

You're welcome!! It will do cute decorative stitches, but not really embroidery, so I'm not sure it's exactly what you want. It's also a light weight machine so it would have trouble sewing heavy weight material.

Hello I just bought this machine recently and I was wondering is there anyway I can get the needle to stop needle down? I would like to quilt sometime soon and the needle needs to stay down when you're quilting and this machine does not stop needle down can you help me with this this? Thank you
I don't think Brilliance has that feature, unfortunately. You'll have to manually remember to use the hand wheel to put the needle down. The Patchwork, which is a slightly upgraded version of this machine does have needle down. I'm sorry I don't have better news to report.

I can only speak to the brilliance because I have one. It's an inexpensive and good machine to start with. You can try it out and see if sewing is a hobby you will enjoy. It's a light weight machine so you can't sew jeans or back packs on it, but light garments and smaller projects do well on it. I hope that helps!

No. This is NOT a heavy duty machine. It's only good for light weight fabrics and it's not for professional use. If f you are sewing heavy weight fabrics and using your machine several hours a day, the heavy weight machine from Singer is a better fit for you. It's a very nice machine, and good value for the price.

Brother machines have a great reputation! This little machine is a wonderful entry level machine, and good way to try out having access to decorative stitches to see if you actually use them. Which I do. When it goes, I'll upgrade to a Patchwork model which is what we used in store at Joann's to teach sewing classes. It's a very nice machine.
I have this machine from Lidl as well. It keeps on breaking the thread and the thread from back sewing too loose. Could you please help why its keep on breaking the thread ?
It could be so many things.....I would start with making sure you have good quality thread. Cheap thread is not your friend. And then make sure the thread is on the proper spool pin. I have videos if you search my home channel page for thread. And a fresh machine needle can make a big difference. I would start with those things and see how it does. Also the machine might need cleaning. It definitely sounds like a tension issue.

Hi Alexus! Gosh that's really a specific type of project. I have not made anything like that, so I could not give you specific advice. I sew with cotton wovens and flannel which is completely different. I honestly don't know anyone who does that kind of sewing, so unfortunately I cannot refer you to another channel. I would search for that type of project and see what you can find. You might also search on instagram. There are some really talented sewists there who sew that kind of garment. I know that it's tricky with the fabric so you need to handle it a certain way, and I'm guessing you use ball point needles and stretch stitches. I wish I could be of more help, but that is not really my department. Good luck! I'm sure you will find the right person to help you.

Nikon Z6 with the 35mm 1.8 lens. It's not a simple setup though. I would recommend an easier to use vlog setup. I've been into photography for decades and used Nikon film cameras so I was excited about using them for my videos. I think the newer versions work easier but I don't have the budget to update anything. The pictures are beautiful and the videos are nice. But it's a better set up for shooting stuff than filming yourself. I hope that helps!
I purchased a twin needle and im not sure if all machines are capable of it? Because ive heard computerized machines work different with it and someone said theirs broke. I just got this machine so im scared that could happen to me. Do you have advice or tip on how to install or how itd work with this machine?
I'm sorry Janay, but I honestly don't know anything about using twin needles. I've seen it discussed in some of the books I have, and I know you have to thread the machine a certain way for it to work. But I personally have not used one and I would not be able to provide you with any instruction or advice on that. I make small quilting projects and bags and items like that which is totally different. I'm sure you can research it here and on the internet. I do apologize that I don't have an answer for you, but it's not something I've done before.

I have the same machine I have used twin needles when sewing with knits. You need to test out the tension on the scrap fabric first.
Would you add felt to the list of materials that you wouldn't recommend using on this machine or would it be OK?

Actually, it sews felt really well! I made a darling scrappy Christmas stocking last season that sewed beautifully on this machine. Make sure you have a fresh needle before you start.

You have to push both buttons to get it to change numbers. So the one showing zero, try pressing the button under it to go up in numbers.

That's a great question! Well, I would not buy anything expensive until you know she is going to stick with it. This is a great machine to learn on, for sure. I got mine in Lidl last year, and I saw it advertised in the latest flyer for $149 this year. This is not a heavy duty machine so you are not going to be sewing jeans day in and day out with it, but it would be ok to upcycle and tailor things. Different fabrics require different machine needles and different thread and different machine tension, so going from a tshirt to jean shorts, for example, is going to require completely different setup for the equipment. It's not as simple as using the same machine needle and thread for a breadth of materials. And a lot of time specialty presser feet are needed for certain fabrics and features. I'm not really a garment maker, so it's impossible for me to adequately advise you on how to make all of those things. But do know that it will require a few odds and ends and understanding machine needles and fabrics to be really successful with it. However, don't let that stop you! But know going in you may find some things are not quite as easy as you first imagined. So be patient and know that it's a learning experience. And in the end, it is a wonderful skill and hobby to have!! I hope that is helpful for you.

Ok Thanks for the input Frank! This little machine doesn't have anything like that on it. It's a very base model. No speed control or anything extra. Right now, I'm working through the setup and sewing for this machine and then I will be getting into project videos with it.

If you're breaking needles, then you might not have your bobbin case installed correctly. With the bobbin door open, slowly turn the hand wheel and see if your needle is striking the bobbin case. Breaking needles is dangerous because it could go in your eye, and that would be really bad, so please be careful. I found this manual so see if this helps www.singer.com.tr/assets/img/uploads/product-files/659584d97fa37febffad8461d143809a_en.pdf I would suggest that if you can't resolve the issue of the needle striking the bobbin case that you might have a machine with bad timing which is not worth fixing in an inexpensive machine like that. I would try to return it as a defective article to the shop where you got it. I always buy my equipment new so I have a warranty attached. You never know how someone treated their machine, and it's possible they were rough on it and it threw the timing. I do hope you can get this resoloved. It is a nice little machine when it's working properly. I've set mine up with the walking foot and do all sewing with that presser foot on that machine and it's worked out great.
How do you compare it with Singer 4423 for business perspective?
The 4423 is a heavy duty machine, so it's great for sewing heavier projects. I has limited decorative stitches, so if that's not important to you, but sewing heavy material or even sewing a LOT, then the 4423 is probably a good investment. If you an go with the 4432, I would do that so you have access to more stitches down the road. I have enjoyed my Brilliance, and it is a nice machine. But it's very lightweight. It had some struggles sewing all the layers in pleated masks. I've recently upgraded to a Patchwork which is a good choice for me because it's more quilting friendly and that is what I enjoy sewing. It all depends on what you want to make and how much of it you're doing. If you want to set up and sell products, then a Heavy Duty machine is probably a better solution for you.

How sturdy is your table? You should be on a very sturdy table to sew.
I know this is older but can you help, my thread under beauty either gets knows or snaps, I have it set at 5 on top and the bobbin is tight enought not to slide if you Google abit
Ann I'm not sure from this information, but if I have to guess, I would suggest changing the machine needle, rethread the machine and loosen the tension a bit. See if that helps. Are you threading the upper part of the machine with the presser foot in the UP position?

Hello, I'M having trouble with the led screen. It's not showing the numbers. It's show a backwards c and a regular c. Are there any suggestion to fixing this problem
HI Marris! I see this question about the "C" errors in the panel come up frequently online. Check your manual on page 20...it's page 20 in my book so I am hoping it's the same for you. It has a whole list of the "C" messages and what they mean. I'm looking at my book and if you are seeing the opposing C's the manual says "Bobbin winder is in operation. Move bobbin winder to the left when not used." So maybe you wound your bobbin and forgot to move the pin back. Please try that and see if it gets you going again. Hi Ingrid! Mine does the same thing, so I can only assume it's how the machine works. It doesn't seem to be causing any issues. I've been using it as my main machine for almost a year, and it seems fine. I'm not a Singer technician, just a fellow sewist, though. But yeah, that noise is pretty unpleasant.

Is this machine good for quilting projects?

Is the singer Fashion Mate 5500 and the Brilliance 6199 the same machine?
I think they are different machines. The names are very different so that indicates a different product. It looks like the Fashion Mate has more stitches. But the Brilliance came with an extension table so it's sold as a quilting machine. But they do look very similar.
@@PattymacMakes Funny story. I had bought my machine several years ago when I still worked. I never really sewed a lot. It seemed there was never time. Now that all this Corona stuff came up, I decided to make a few masks. I got done with them an was putting my machine back in the box it came in and I noticed the outside of the box said Fashion Mate 5500. My machine has Brilliance 6199 on it. I bought it new at Wal-Mart and the box didn't look tampered with. So far it sees good but don't know who switched out machine. Too bad I didn't see the difference then. Lol

I have a Kenmore for a backup, but it has been giving me a little trouble so I'm looking at getting something else for backup. I would love a Patchwork, but they are still sold out every where. It's impossible to get a machine for under $600 right now.

If you can find it for an inexpensive price, and you only do light weight projects it is a good machine. But if you can spend a little more, I would upgrade to the Patchwork. It's a much nicer version of this one and I've really enjoyed the update

I don't really know what's going on. You might try emailing Singer about it. I do know that sometimes you can have the bobbin winder engaged that can mess up the needle moving properly. And honestly, the motherboard can go bad and once that happens the machine is not worth fixing.

I found it in Lidl which is a grocery store. Keep in mind I found it almost 3 years ago, and that was well before the sewing craze hit this year and the cost of machines went up so much. I don't know where you live, but if it were me, I would put the $200 towards a new machine with a warranty. It's not a bad little machine, but you don't know who it's been treated and I would not want to spend that much money and not have any warranty.
