- Clean your sewing machine. Did you know that you should perform regular maintenance on your sewing machine at home? The best thing you can do for you sewing machines are to keep the area under the throat plate clean and clear of dust. It might look scary to take some things apart, but I'll show you how I do it, so you can see it's not all that bad.
You need to be careful about reassembly and make sure the bobbin shuttle is put back in correctly. This video uses my Singer Brilliance 6180 as the demo machine, and it has a front loading bobbin. I hope this gives you the confidence to clean and care for your sewing machine. But if you are not comfortable with the process, simply schedule your machine for a clean and service with a good sewing machine shop.
Important Note: Every machine is different, so review the cleaning and oiling procedure specific to YOUR machine. This video demonstrates care for the Singer Brilliance 6180 with a front loading bobbin. Sewing machines are similar, but they can have minor differences. So be very careful about doing this on your machine.

How often do you clean your sewing machine?
I've been cleaning the bobbin and feeding plate with the brush daily...I oiled my machine once..I just got it about a week ago but was using the wrong thread and it got jammed really bad so I had to take it all apart and I could feel me wiping alot of oil off while doing so. So I thought I should put a few drops back on it just in case. Its been running like a beauty every since u helped me out with the thread situation. So again thank you SO very much!!!
@@najasstaslays3094 Oh Najassta!! I'm so happy to hear this! I've been thinking about you this week and wondering how you were getting along. Be really careful about adding too much oil. That also causes trouble and it can get all over the fabric. You really only need to do this a couple of times a year with heavy sewing. But cleaning of a regular basis is a great thing. It's crazy how much difference a thread can make, isn't it? It costs a little more, but it's worth it. You save your machine and your sanity. Thanks for letting me know it worked out for you.
@@PattymacMakes Yes. I was super careful when putting the oil because I was scared of putting to much. I added two drops and it seemed to be going smoothly. On my birthday(May18th) I was at Joanns and seen the Viking machines they had one Singer 8060 left at 499$ it had so many awesome features I snatched it up but now I feel so guilty😭 My husband says to keep it because I already have it but I still dont know. I feel like I should have stuck with the other machine to be sure I love sewing. I feel like I do right now but I know how I am. I'll get so into something then loose interest. I have so much filming equipment I havent touched since I got pregnant(my son is 8momths now) that just sits there and Im scared the same will happen with the sewing machine. 😭

Sewing is a little more practical for you as a new mom than filming equipment. Our lives are all about different seasons. So I would keep the new machine and look at baby and children's items. They are so sweet and fun to make. I'm definitely going to get into sharing projects and pattern reviews for those kind of things, but there is a lot of information here on youtube already about that kind of stuff. Set up your own dedicated sewing space and commit to making at least one or two new projects every month. I think it's more enjoyable when you build up skills, and there is SO MUCH more to make than masks. You can use your lights and equipment to photograph your projects for instagram. @@PattymacMakes Yes, I really want to get into making baby clothes and little girl clothes as well. I'm very lucky to have a room that was dedicated to me making makeup videos on instagram but now will be split for room for my sewing. I'm really looking forward to your uploads with patterns. I'm so new at sewing I'm still confused on alot of things. For example seam allowance. I understand that its where you stich but the distance is from the needle at the center out? But if you move the needle over how do u measure what tour seam allowance will be? By any chance do you have a video on that. Like I said there is so much I have to learn and not sure where to start. So I figured I'd jump right in and I'm going to attempt to make my first baby shirt soon. Hope it works out and I can just learn as I go. Thank you again for responding. With having a new baby spending any little bit of money on myself makes me feel so guilty.I think I'm going to keep the machine now and continue to try new things.

I have no Manuel and it didn’t come with the extra work space. I like your videos. Not able to find one online. I think I’m stuck with a piece of junk. Can’t get the pieces put back together. Going to the place that works on machine said it would cost more to fix it than what I paid for it. Now, Singer is out of business and I got this one this year😮

One of the sewing machine mechanics on TH-cam said you should oil the bobbin case (shuttle) after every 2 full bobbins you sew. I had no idea! There's a lot of metal rubbing against each other in a vertical (front load) machine so it's important to keep it oiled.

You're welcome Jackie! Unplug the machine first, take out your needle and take your time with this. I'm sure you can do it! It feels a little daunting at first, but it's not that bad once you do it and put everything back together.

Great video Patty! I'm hoping this solves my issue.
When I was making some masks the other night, my needle was getting "jammed" during the down stroke when I was going over parts of the mask that had multiple layers of fabric. It would go down through the fabric but then hesitate when pulling out and almost seemed like it was going to get stuck. I'm using a 90/14 Singer needle but I know the machine has sat idle for a while. Any idea what causes this? Does one need to use multiple different needles in a sewing project? Like, do most of the mask with a 90/14 then when I know I'll be going through more material use a heavier needle?
To be completely honest about it, this is a light weight machine, and it can't handle sewing all those layers. Not well anyway. I made a few masks for us to wear back in April and that's been it for me. The machine really struggles through the pleats and multiple layers. You might have a bent needle. That will cause a lot of trouble. Also make sure it hasn't dinged the bobbin case. Any little knick in the parts wreaks havoc. I wound up getting a new bobbin case after my mask escapades. You can go up in needle weight. There is a 100/16 out there IF you can find it. Supplies are kind of scarce. You might try a denim needle if you can find them. I only thought of that right now. Ultimately this little machine is just not designed for that kind of sewing. It's going to do small projects and light quilting with only a couple of layers of fabric. But I would not try heavy weight sewing on it. Someone else might chime in with a different experience, but I won't sew them anymore on my little machine. I hope that helps. Though I'm sure that's not really the answer you wanted.

@@PattymacMakes I haven’t sewn on this machine in nearly two years and it was dusty! My Juki bobbin case got damaged so it’s out of commission until I get the replacement. It’s nice to have a backup! This was a great refresher!

Ida, you can go to my channel homepage and search "thread a sewing machine" and I have several videos posted about thread and how to thread the upper housing as well as the bobbin. My machines are new so if you have an older machine it might work a little differently. But I'll try to share a search link with you here

Where is the boiling process?
Misleading!
Do you mean oiling? I did show it on this machine. All machines are different and these new machines only take a drop of oil in the bobbin shuttle.

That is my Brilliance. I've since replaced it with a Patchwork, but the cleaning process for a front loading bobbin style machine is the same.
