Glassy amp model demo

  • In this video I demonstrate the differences between the 4 different “glassy” amp models. I created 8 tone configurations for this one, one for each model with a “flat” setting (all dials at 5) and one with a custom setting that highlights the character of each. I also use both an American Standard Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul using 3 pick up positions on each. Hopefully this gives you a feel for each amp’s sound. Enjoy!

This is one of my favorite Spark videos of yours so far. The Strat sounded really clear, clean, and bright for the most part. The Les Paul pushed most of them to breakup, or to the edge of it. The neck pickup, especially. In fact, it almost sounded a little “muddy,” but not a lot, and that could have been my speakers. Again, comparing these particular “glassy” amps together isn’t something I would’ve thought to do. Thanks again, man, and please keep ‘em coming!

James TheDoctor Duncan thanks man! Yeah, the pickups on my les Paul were definitely giving me a lot more signal than the strat! This is a good reminder that tone configuration really matters when it comes to the specific gear running into the Spark.

I think Strats and other single coil guitars do better with modelers than Les Pauls and other humbucker guitars. Modelers seem to like a cleaner input tone. The exception is when you're going after metal tones. These are where humbuckers shine.

Thanks for adding the Les Paul. Very interesting results. Makes me think PG designed the amp using a Strat. The Les Paul was super dark sounding.

Kolchak357 I think the main point is to remember that tone configurations are relative to the gear you plug in to them. A lot of people complain about “garbage tones” on ToneCloud but they don’t realize that it probably sounded good to the person who made it with their guitar, in the room they were in.

Would you want me to update the clean amp model video with the les Paul? I can either update the current one or do a second one with just the les paul.

Spark Amp Tutorials I would love that. But I certainly would understand if you don’t want to take the time to revisit that.
As you said it really illustrates what a huge different your guitar and pickup make. One of the reasons I hope they add and EQ pedal at some point.

I’m actually kind of curious to hear it myself, lol. The clean amps are likely to take the les Paul differently than the glassy ones, but still express a heavier sound... My main problem will be micing the amp in the same way I did the first time in order to keep a level playing field. I did it differently (and honestly more effectively) when I did the glassy amps.

Did you put your spark top knob on the glassy channel?

What's the clicking noise? I don't mean when you switch pick ups.

Do u have a vid like this for clean? BTW if u CAN u really should consider properly mic'ing or recording DI... ;)

Yes I do. Although I realized recently that when I recorded (and then added) my Les Paul later on that I had a slightly different mic placement so the les Paul sounds (uncharacteristically) less “meaty” than the strat. But it should still give you a good idea of how the amps sound. th-cam.com/video/6Amiyuguw6o/w-d-xo.html

@@boimesa8190 sorry you don’t like it. It was one of my first recordings while mic’ing the amp. All of my previously recorded videos were just of using the amp and the app, without demonstrating sounds. So I was (and still am) learning. I’ve been considering re-recording it.

@@sparkamptutorials2169 no need to apologize ;) it's good content and would be even better in higher quality audio so it would be a shame to not redo it :D

Good advice. I had been using a single mic for both my voice as well as the amp, it’s not perfect as you can obviously tell. I truly appreciate the feedback and will think about that. I should probably mic the amp separately from my voice and mix them together afterwards. The convenience of using a single audio recording is sacrificing too much audio fidelity. I was actually planning on doing some more extensive mic/recording testing as my next step (rather than doing any more demos or videos), so the timing of your feedback is excellent.
