He basically showed only 3d games other than a single sprite-based fighting game, but I'm with you that I think the Sega Saturn might be worth looking into, filtering out all the 3d titles since old 3d games are almost always objectively far worse than even somewhat recent 3d games.

It is the benchmark of engineering excellence.
Showing these games upscaled and without even a CRT filter really doesn't give them justice.
Shining Force as a whole was a fantastic franchise. It should definitely make a comeback!

Sadly, Shining Force was made by Camelot and they are now a Nintendo exclusive developer and the Shining Series is still a Sega franchise.

Shining Force 3 and Panzer Dragoon Saga really were two of the best RPGs ever released. I think both of them deserve a re-release. More people should be able to experience them.
those 2 games along with knights into dreams where my favorite games on the Saturn. sadly i was never able to finish panzer dragoon saga. When i bought my Saturn from an ex rental shop. the disk of panzer was left in the system, then while playing it suddenly asked for disk 2, i was like there is a disk 2, Damn it...

Excellent video as always. Gotta love the Saturn...so many excellent games that are sorely underated. Still recall buying Saga for £5 mint from a 2nd hand shop near me along with a load of other Saturn goodies. Those were the days!

To bad collecting for it is a nightmare unless your rich.
I grew up with a mega drive and i didnt know about the next gen of consoles coming. My parents got me a ps1 and despite being a huge sega fan, i have no regrets at all. I would buy myself a saturn many years later though along with sonic jam, sonic r, panzer dragoon, burning rangers and an imported astal.

Now this is the console I grew up with from the mid 90's, great and absurdly underrated console.
It was a real underdog!
I had it, and I felt extremely underwhelmed by the number of games compared to other systems. Mysteria was actually one game I had that I thought deserved a little more recognition.
And seriously, it's always annoyed me the way that so many people don't know the difference between games being published by sony or developer by, people who seem to think as though because a game was on playstation that they made it. Especially during the ps2 era. Games that could have been on anything, and would have even ran better too.
@@derealized797 You needed to get it chipped and region unlocked to unleash its full potential. If you were just relying on the Western market, you pretty much only had a castrated Saturn.
Not everything that is nostalgic for you is underrated
Not everything, still, the Saturn is and was very underrated, there's no nostalgia glasses in my statement, it's based on my experience and knowledge about the system and its games.
Great list. Although I think the Saturn visuals look way better at lower resolutions without the clean edges on the polygons at high resolutions. Similar to PS1. Because at the time, the way 3d art was treated was more of an extension of pixel art (lack of shaders, that's why) where the aliasing on the polygons was important to the final look. The blockiness of the low-res unfiltered textures are meant to be paired with low resolution 3d polygons, to give it that trademark Saturn blocky 3d-look. A really good example of this being used to maximum effect is Vagrant Story on PS1. Everything from the lighting to the sillouette shaping of the characters is carefully pixel-painted on the screen. I worked on PS1/PS2 games myself back in the day as an artist and we always tested the final look on a CRT television at final resolution.
Plus, the mesh shading looks SO much better on a CRT. The glow of the pixels makes the mesh blend together and looks very close to a true transparency.
@@christianpalmer225 Yeah, it was all about using the tech at the time to hide these things you're not supposed to see. Kind of like an Impressionist painting vs. a Renaissance one.
Digital Foundry did this video on the N64 and they were talking about Waverace. They used a low tech displacement map for the waves up close, but then blended it to a 2d texture further away. On an upscaled emulator, the illusion is broken because you can see the harsh transition more clearly.

It was overpriced and underpowered.
Sega made a lot of crazy moves, and a lot of it was trying to rush to be first to do something. If they didn't go releasing expensive junk hardware add-ons and then abandoning support for them immediately after without even having games for it.
I mean, no wonder people gave up on Sega
True, they were successful with the Genesis/Mega Drive releasing the first true 16-bit machine in US and the rest of the world, so they thought repeating the feat would result the same, SEGA was even afraid of the Jaguar and the 3DO, too bad, the Saturn could have been otherwise home to most of what made the PS what it became, given the right circumstances.
Only by people who don't know the system.

In my opinion Exhumed/Powerslave should be included in part 2. Lobotomy Software did an excellent job in porting it to the Saturn with a smooth framerate whereas other FPS such Doom ran absolutely terrible on the Saturn.
Which is sad, because apparently the team had a great version running using and engine that played to the Saturn´s strengths, but Id Software told them they had to use the PC-based engine, so they scrapped the smooth one and hastily programmed the crappy one.
@@christianpalmer225 Yeah. Lobotomy Software actually got the gig to port Quake to Saturn, and as a result, Saturn Quake is a much smoother and faster experience than Saturn Doom, which is insane.
Lobotomy also programmed Duke Nukem 3D for the Saturn. Another excellent example of the Saturn's underestimated 3D capabilities. It's better than the PS1 port as is Exhumed/PowerSlave.
When the system was put in the right hands it stood up well in 3D, just a shame it didn't sell well outside of Japan. Had it done so then more time and effort would have gone into programming for this awesome console.

A handheld console dedicated for the Saturn and Dreamcast will do. Give it to us, Sega.
I'd say a mini would do better for both
@@alphamoose4385 i think the chances are bigger we get a master system mini, and then a dreamcast mini, the saturn is actualy harder to emulate then the dreamcast... and these mini's run on low spec hardware to keep the costs down.
Legend of Oasis is a gorgeous 2D RPG Action game, Advanced World War - Sennen Teikoku no Koubou - Last of the Millennium has one of the most impressive 3D battle scenes produced on the hardware, Saturn's Grandia is better even the the lazy HD remaster released a few years ago, as it's based on the PS1 port. Sonic's 3D World (from Sonic Jam) is impressive, not exactly a game, but a showpiece of how a 3D sonic could be done on the machine, speaking of which, Sonic R is great as well, Panzer Dragoon 2 has a wide screen option, Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter 2, Dead or Alive and Goiken Muyou: Anarchy on Nippon runs at the higher res mode, each of them runs and looks great, Decathlete has to be the best Olympic games ever released and looks astonishingly good, using the higher res mode, same as Winter Heat, you should check Dragon Force II as well, it's completely translated to English, Saturn Bomberman Fight!! is colorful, exclusive, runs and looks great, Shining Force III - Scenario 3 improves even further the visuals of the battles, with better 3D models, lighting and particle effects, don't forget to check Digital Dance Mix: Namie Amuro, the most impressive 3D model and motion captured moves to ever grace the console.
And about 2D fighters: Darkstalkers 3...
@@Leynx-Et-Fenrir 2D fighters runs better on Saturn, but, since the subject is graphically impressive games, even the watered down PS1 ports manage to look the same, SFA3, Darkstalkers 3 and many more across both platforms basically have the same visuals as the arcade.

Legend of Oasis & Panzer Dragoon Saga were the 2 games I got my sega saturn for....afterwards I needed to get Shining Force 3 & Dragon Force
The title is graphically impressive Saturn games, Shining the Holy Ark is a good game but not graphically impressive, Winter Heat uses the same engine as Decatlhon and yes, looks great, he already mentioned Burning Rangers, it would be even better provided it wasn't rushed due to the end of the Saturn's support, Dragon Force was already mentioned, did you watch the whole video?
Great video with some true classics. I a part two, you should consider showing Gungriffon 2, Bulk Slash, Dead or Alive, Athlete Kings/Decathlete, Winter Heat and Astra Superstars.

Guardian Heroes remains one of my favorite all-time beat-em-ups. I played that more than any other Saturn game. It never got old.
Maybe next time you should feature Videogame systems - its pros and cons or maybe make a short documentary about them. Keep up the the good work.

Actually, from what I’ve heard, the Sega Saturn was actually fairly well-equipped for 3D graphics, perhaps better than the PS1, but it was horribly difficult to code for and utilize its graphics processors.

Yeah, the creator of the video was off with that comment.
not exactly, Saturn has a weaker graphics chip, it can only extract a result when the game's floor is made by vdp2 as in Sonic R, this would force the ps1 to do the polygon floor and because of that it would have less power to execute the other tasks, being inferior to the Saturn. But there's a flaw vdp2 only makes flat scenarios so tomb raider style adventure games or racing in general would always be worse than the competitors because I couldn't use vdp2.
I absolutely love Burning Rangers. I've always wanted a sequel. The gameplay, characters and music are all awesome.
I am playing Panzer Dragoon saga on my Saturn emulator right now. It really is a very good game
My favorite console of all times! I'm happy that I got almost all my favorite PAL games years ago, Saturn games now are very very expensive and I'm still missing on some of them, probably not going to get them anytime soon.

Great video, but how can you rave about Astal's graphics without including footage of the opening to the second level (cave). Total darkness, all the ominous red eyes blinking, then the light penetrating as a multitude of bat-like creatures fly off into beautiful layers of parallax scrolling. You really need to include that!
Great video. Did you use an emulator or upscaler to record this footage? When I play games on my Saturn, they don't look this clean but if there's a way I can get them to look better, I'd love to know!

How did you get the games to look so sharp? I don’t mean video capture, but like, a certain emulator with certain settings? Or a modded console?
Saturn can output scart or you can get HDRetrovision component cables. Emulator settings im sure modded warfare has a video on that.

It is said that Zero 3 on Saturn is even superior to the DC port, there's also comparisons showing why, technically speaking, I find the PS1 port impressive as well, given the reduced RAM, as always, the Saturn loading times were almost inexistent, giving the arcade experience in its fullest, following the amazing gamepad.

@@residentevil094 I'm familiar with Alpha 3 Max on the PSP and this is probably the version I played even more than the Saturn port. It has a few more characters than any other A3 version, more modes too, it could have been the definite release if Capcom gave it a special treatment, making it a proper widescreen game, it also seems to suffer the same as the A3 Upper Naomi port, as Capcom started to use some sort of emulation layer or something that made these games feel sluggish somehow, you can feel it specially in their input delay. For comparison, take Metal Slug 7 for the NDS, the PSP port called XX suffers from the same, not properly displayed in widescreen and noticeable input delay.
The 32-bit era was the last gen we actually saw proper ports that couldn't use emulation, so the original games assets had to be brought from their source, in the 128-gen onwards, almost everything resorted to emulation and this wasn't a good idea. Sonic JAM for the Saturn has proper ports of the original games, while the dreadful Sega Smash Pack for the Dreamcast is hard to believe it was released as a retail product, not to mention tons of compilations for the Sat/PS which are proper ports also, Gradius Deluxe Pack, Parodius packs, Salamander and so on.
In Brazil Sega is strong. I have Master system, mega drive, sega CD, sega 32x, sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast 👍

I actually agree with everything in this video. THese happen to be my favorite saturn games. I still own U.S. physical copies of Guardian Heroes , Astal & Sega Rally, (among others)

I bought my Saturn in March 1996 and it still sits in exactly the same place as the day i set it up! Well kinda, i did pick up a second Saturn at a boot sale in 2001ish, so i put my original one back in its box for preservation and sat the boot sale buy in its place. Absolutely love this machine, it has its flaws, but it did everything i wanted it to, gave me great ports of sega's arcade games and great ports of Capcoms vs fighting games + much more besides.

Not lot of people talk about it but the controller is so well suited for fighting games, not just the button layout but the dpad is very comfortable.
Best system ever made period!!!!,thunderforce 5,soukygorentai if spelt correctly,lol,hyper duel,quake,duke nukem 3d,vampire saviour,panzer dragoon zwei,die hard arcade,galactic attack,dodonpachi,dead or alive,steep slope sliders,list goes on as every Saturn owner knows!

Played both Gary and didn’t really do it for me compared to the Megadrive or Dreamcast as both 16 bit systems and 128 bit system rivals of each machine personally and I didn’t get my Saturn till Xmas of 97,I was late to the 32/64 bit party but I’d played a tonne of ps1 games on me m8s psx his parents had good jobs so he got the latest games all the time and I was impressed but not impressed enough to want one if ya get what I mean and apart from turok the 64 didn’t really excite me at the time,I still had my Megadrive at the time,wondered what segas machine was cos hadn’t really paid attention to the console war at the time,seen the official Saturn mag in the shop looked through it and said dad I want this for Xmas and the rest is history,best gaming desicion of my life and panzer saga remains to me the best game ever made of all time and yes I’ve played and experienced mgs and ff7 and 8 aswel and played them and personally they don’t come close!but hey each to there own,laters!
@@nikkiwileman7033 Dreamcast was good but had no support. Megadrive was also very good, especially for sports games but SNES just had more quality titles overall. Nothing on Saturn could compare to the likes of Tekken 3, Wipeout 2097 or Wipeout 3, Gran Turismo, Vagrant Story, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, ISS Pro Evo, or Oddworld.

I never played a Saturn. I'd definitely would love to try some of these games. The price hike for these games is unfortunate, making it harder to preserve them.
I know it is a shame, it’s so pricey to collect for these days!

My first 3D console ever. Coming from the NES that i had to milk way after it's time, i still remember looking trough the window of the game shop and see Worldwide Soccer game play and my jaw dropping at the 3D environment. The idea of having arcade like games at home was just baffling. My reward for doing great at school and helping my parents during summer was a Saturn. Loading a CD and playing Panzer Dragoon for the first time was a feeling that i still vividly remember. Sega Rally remained the best rally game for years to come sand still, to this day, holds up as an intemporal classic. Dreams was probably my favorite game on the console. What a truly beautiful game. Duke Nukem 3D was my first FPS game ever and i loved it so much! The Saturn was graphically better than the PS1. Then i jumped towards the Dreamcast who also was visually superior than the PS2 thanks to VGA support and had... ONLINE GAMING in the late 90's!!!! Sadly, SEGA had terrible marketing strategies. The Dreamcast didn't think the outrageous prices of internet would turn Online gaming impossible for most and weren't allowed to use Sony's DVD system. Sony then turned their PS2 into a DVD player and every household then bought a PS2 as it was cheaper than buying a DVD player. This killed SEGA but i will never forget the Saturn and the Dreamcast. I deeply regret selling the Saturn to a friend for pocket change. The fact that he once got home drunk and pissed on it thus destroying it makes me feel even worse.
It's crazy to me that Radiant Silvergun is expensive and rare today. Everyone was so excited about it at the time, EVERYONE who was into importing Japanese Saturn titles bought it.
I guess no one ever wants to give up their copy. But there's got to be a whole ton of them out there.

Saturn didn't have texture warping.
That's enough to place it higher, than PS1 graphics wise.

I'm a simple man. I see a Sega Saturn video and I watch.
I've got nothing against emulation, I think it is great! And running older games at a higher resolution can make them look really good. However for this video if you were going to emulate that is fine but you should have ran them at their default resolution since this video is about what the graphics look like. Still a good video though.
I love my Saturn games I have most of these games
The HOURS I ploughed into Sega Rally, Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop 2 and Daytona USA CCE. I even spent a good chunk of time on the terrible Doom port, about which the less said the better. Loved unlocking the Stratos on SR, everything on FM, VF2 only had Dural and a .1 mode which slightly altered some of the mechanics, don't remember VC2 having any unlockables and the horse on Daytona CCE was just genius. Ahhh it was a much better time for gaming.
