You may recall seeing the story of Marcus Luttrell in the 2013 film 'Lone Survivor', or you may have even read Marcus' book, but Alan Mack saw a large part of Marcus' story from a totally different point of view. In this clip from #187 of the Mike Drop Podcast, Alan talks planning and flying the rescue heard around the world when he picked up Marcus Luttrell after Operation Red Wings.

Reading Al’s book. I was a CH46E crew chief in the 90s.
Excited about this episode. But I’ve heard “Big Navy” didn’t like Marcus’s story and how shit went down so they made a narrative for him and that’s how we got today’s story of the mission. I wasn’t there so wtf do I know.
Yeah he brought back the man with fam to US. But the guy told the real story and Latrell got pissed. Wouldn’t talk to him, so he went back. He said that it wasn’t a large group that got them. They just was in a bad spot. All heroes

Pred footage? does that make sense to anyone? There was a predator and yet the Navy/US Govt didn't know where the other team members were located? Oh, a fire fight during the day sucks. You can't see shinnett.
People need to stop blaming Luttrell for his version of events. In a ambush situation, things aren’t going according to your training, and after the facts, things aren’t as clear as they appear. Also remember the fact that in Special Ops every soldiers are trained to give false information during a POW situation. The people that come rescue you could be wearing US military uniforms, so Luttrell had to be smart and made sure that they were indeed US Army Rangers. It’s part of the SERE course. Luttrell wasn’t lying about where his teammates were, he was protecting them from possible enemies in disguise US military uniforms.
What? Explain how Luttrell would think that American men talking in American accents carrying Army issued M4s and wearing Army attire were Taliban is disguise.
@@TestingCase31 Because he was a POW at that time. And the Rangers that rescued him also wanted to make sure it was really him. The Rangers asked him some key words for verification.
@@Nuhuh130 Huh? He wasn't a prisoner. He was being cared for by a local Afghan villager. The Rangers had to verify Luttrell's identity because he was dressed in local Afghan clothing. Nowhere does it state that Luttrell thought the Rangers were "possible enemies in disguise". That's nonsense.

You know everyone's all over Luttrell about his story not jiving with evidence especially when it comes to the number of Taliban that were involved, but why is it that everyone else involved with it, primarily the people who went in there and got him are being looked upon as he is? Why is venom being spit in their direction to? What have they done to deserve it?
And there's something about Luttrell's story that no one takes into consideration and that's the possibility that he fell into the same trap that Alvin York did, modern day battlefield forensics have proven what the 16 other men who were with York that day in the Argonne Forest all said till the day they died, and that's that York didn't fight the Germans alone while they all took cover as the story about him has always gone, and in all fairness to York they also determined that due to his position, which was indeed away from the rest of the men and on his own, he wouldn't have known at the time that his guy's were putting fire on the German machineguns from their positions due to all the racket from the German machineguns, before York knew it his commanding officers who were very career oriented had fabricated the story about him taking on those German machineguns by himself because they were eager to have a hero come out of their unit, when York found out about it they pulled him off to the side and gave him a pep talk about how important his hero story was to everyone back home and especially to all the troops in theater at the time, how much it was boosting morale with the troops, York just being a simple man bought into it and bought into how important it was to everyone so he went along with it feeling it was his duty, but after getting home it haunted him for years and is why he never wanted to talk about the war with anyone.
It's likely the same thing happened with Luttrell, we all know that the Navy treats the image of the Seals like it's a product brand and is always trying to protect it, Luttrell was in pretty bad shape when they recovered him and he went straight to a hospital, while there it was the Navy brass that fabricated the story about how many Taliban there were, by the time Luttrell caught wind of it the Navy already had the story out, and like York they sold him on the story of 30+ Taliban and told him how important the story was to everyone back home and with everyone who was part of fighting the global war on terror, by that time it was too late, what else was he supposed to do? Yank the rug out from underneath everything? I know one thing, I certainly wouldn't want to be in that position, I just couldn't imagine the agony it'd put you through having to deal with it, no way, I'm glad I'm not him, I mean just look at what he has to deal with now and all because he thought he was doing the right thing, and now, like York, he has to spend the rest of his life dealing with something that a bunch of career minded officers cooked up because they wanted their hero, no thank you, I wouldn't want to be in that position.

Marcus’s book is very, very good. Tough read, especially if you know any of the guys, but it’s a damn good book.
And his story is coming out now as bullshit as well. Good movie but that's not how it went down. He was found with full magazine not one shot fired and when Axel was found he was dead two days tops
And it was ghost written and out right lies. Axl died just days before they found his body, because Marcus lied. So much bullshit to sell books and movies while lying to the American people. Standard operating procedure

Despite how far fetched some of his claims seem or are. Marcus has been through hell, his buddies died, and everyone is sticking their finger in this pie. I won’t be believing anything other than this dudes friends are dead and he’s alive. Maybe he was looking for fame maybe he was just trying to immortalize his friends. In all honesty and I know for a F****** fact if this happened to yall you’d do the exact same, but I’d rather be known for being run down fighting 100 guys rather than being shot in the back or shot like a dog by 6 or even getting my ass killed by a bunch of untrained farmers.

Marcus "Full Magazines" Luttrell
My buddy was on that ODA and told me complete garbage. He said he wasn’t even shot .
Did they ever confirm if the mags were full? Round count? I think all it states is that the physical mags were all accounted for. Please correct me if I’m wrong I would love to find more facts to get through the speculation
The magazines story is not completely true, Marcus started the op with a total of 13 mags, when he was rescued he had 11 mags with him.
Although to me, 2 mags is not enough to respond to an ambush, specially if you have a PKM pointed at you...

Everyone knows Marcus was found with all of his magazines full. Not one shot was spent. He ran away from his boys. There were only about 12 fighters not 80. Tell the real story. We know what happened

You know what i think? I think good dudes whomever they were were sent it for buruaecratic reason, few different factions, for sure 1 chinook, 2 man mortar team,1 for the lhmbc and the other gun. With army infantry generals being pushed out over the years, and navy or air force all of a sudden making army and marine infantry obsolete? Your out of goddam minds, the only other i ever seen was marines infantry, usually way out in the middle of nowwhere, kinda like us.
Im talking about a ganky mission in 2011, or, a month or 2 before the bin laden thing. As a matter of fact, i remember a "retaliation attack" mentioned the day before the obl ordeal. I remember thinking "what the hell makes you mention that"?

it was a stupid mission with people popping up at odd times, while those dudes were out and about. it was probably 1 or the other not knowing. I dont know what came of that mission, i dont remember leaving, only getting there and being there for a week or so. holy sht i cannot remember how we left.

Its kinda nerve racking when its in the military though, ieds that didnt blow,end up hitting the MI guys vehical instead, at the rear of convoy, yet, was put up front intentionally where a massive ied was, at the end of mission, within minutes, maybe 2 tops, of "drop ramp"
Led straight to a trap, MI guy was in very rear vehical yet that was the one that got hit, out of like 10 trucks total.This was when matv's were new and seen as the new thing, but turned out, no, they cannot take a punch at all. He was in that truck along with 2 scouts, 1 killed other hurt.
what that ied did was just shred everything. not even the best trucks with the best positions and best technology is going to just going to allow anyone to treat life so expensible like that.

Interview of Luttrell is the only way to legitimize the criticism of him. And how many are actual combat vets. My Dad was a decorated combat pilot, eventually deceased of wound in my youth, and he said they’ll always be detractors and doubters of nearly any combat story.
