  • Hase Dera Temple in Kamakura is renowned for several unique features that make it a memorable destination. One of the most prominent attractions is the magnificent 9.18-meter tall statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy, which is one of the largest wooden statues in Japan. This beautifully carved and gold-plated statue draws many visitors.
Another highlight of Hase Dera is its stunning hydrangea garden. During the rainy season in June, the temple grounds are transformed into a sea of vibrant blue, pink, and purple hydrangeas, attracting numerous visitors who come to admire the floral display.
The temple also offers breathtaking panoramic views of Kamakura and Sagami Bay. The scenic vista from the upper levels of the temple grounds provides excellent photo opportunities and is particularly beautiful.
Adding to its unique charm, Hase Dera features a set of caves known as the Benten Kutsu. These caves are dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of everything that flows, such as water, words, speech, eloquence, and music. The caves are adorned with numerous small statues and carvings.
The temple grounds are meticulously landscaped with tranquil gardens, ponds filled with koi fish, and seasonal flowers, creating a serene environment for reflection and relaxation. Another poignant feature of the temple is the numerous Jizo statues, believed to protect the souls of deceased children and unborn babies. These small, stone statues, often dressed in red bibs and caps, provide a moving insight into Japanese culture.
Overall, Hase Dera Temple is special for its combination of cultural, natural, and spiritual elements, making it a must-visit site in Kamakura.
