Hi Riki, if one just needs to get somewhere without lugging kids or lots of shopping around, would an electric bike or scooter be better? I'm assuming it would be safe if drivers are used to navigating roads with goats and pedestrians.. If yes, easy to get one in Mauritius? Thanks.
Biking on the roads here petrifies me….I only mountain bike off road. I really wouldn’t advise it. I guess it all depends how adventurous you are 🤪 I know very few people who scoot or use electric bikes on the main roads. I hope that helps?
Having just arrived, I can confirm that 90% of the conversations I have had were in French. English is spoken in the leisure/tourism industry to a high level though - cant wait to explore the island!

Surprisingly the language order is Creole then French then only English (even though Mauritius was under English flag until 1968). They told us that English is mainly used for business reasons but in everyday' such life, the two others are predominant. Another surprising thing is the following : we went to l'Ile aux bénitiers with a bunch of other people within which there was a Mauritian family expat to Saint Ouen at the north west of Paris. They were talking about France as "la metropole" even if France isn't. That's really surprising that they consider themselves closer to France than to England. Being from Belgium it is not so strange to me that people have several languages in a country. Here half of the people speaks flemish (dutch) and other half speaks french. Being a flemish guy i am used to hearing french because i work in Brussels. It will feel a bit like home there then haha.

Good advice. Could I also suggest that you need to be very careful if you have any specific health requirements. Not all medication or treatments are avaiable here so check very carefully that you will be able to get what you need. It may be that you can get what you need but it may be very expensive.

Only if there was intellectual stimulation in Mauritius, I would consider retiring there. I travelled there extensively, but found I couldn't afford to be demebtia sufferer due to lack of cultural socialisation. I can start one, but found the retirees and visitors are holiday orientated.

Absolutely correct. There are a number of reasons, namely job loss, end of contracts and expats choosing to be close to family (as travel is now much harder). Covid has hit very hard for many people.

I did a little research for myself and found Mauritius published crime rates to be very low and the UK government indicates Mauritius to be the best governed nation in Africa. Also, Mauritius crime rate is half of the Philippines. Philippines crime rate is half of the Seychelles. So if security and crime are a concern for you (as it is for me and my family), then Mauritius is probably a good country to short-list. During the pandemic, my wife and I remotely studied 40 countries in the past 3-years and short-listed 4. Mauritius is one of those 4. We plan to visit soon with an eye towards living there. Hopefully the experience on the ground will match the reports!
