@@doncaswell1846 to me, its all quantity over quality. I'd much rather catch 2 dozen smaller bluegill, smallmouth and shiners, over one big largemouth or something like that.

I often have a hard time deciding what to do sometimes. Go fishing for walleyes or creekchubs? I’m usually a lot more successful with the creek chubs 😂
I catch the same species where I live in Canada. I use rod and typical metal trap with bread and worms. Through lots of trial and error keeping them alive for long periods of time... I've found that keeping them in the same river water in buckets with aerator ( separate the large chubs from shiners if possible) . Once original water is clouded/dirtied up from the minnow purging or puking up stomach contents... you can change water with fresh distilled jugs from any grocery store while matching temp as best you can by feel. Real spring or well water seems fine as long as there's no added chemicals. They usually puke up everything within an hour or 2. So have everything ready at home depending on the size of bucket . I've been able to keep them alive for long periods of time. Hope this helps anyone from losing bait. Keep em cool with sealed frozen water bottles if need. Can be refrozen over again.
My pb creak chub was 12.75 in and cought a 41 in pike with it.😁🎣🎣🎣
Mine was 7.92 and I caught a 10.78 bass using it as chunk bait

Along with the chubs/shiners, there are sometimes some really great fish in this size creek. I used to fish a little creek like this as a kid and caught northern, smallies, walleyes, etc- especially in the spring. With suckers/chubs $6 a dozen, spending half an hour catching bait like this isn't a bad idea.

Btw I made a batch of your pickled fish today using pike, 5 days of salt and vinegar and now their into the sugar and vinegar, onions/peppers and whatnot...how long do you leave them in the jars before eating them? Thanks

here in the east we have minnow species called a fallfish. they're basically chubs that get up to 3-4 lbs. so that huge chub you caught would be a tiny fallfish. they make great bait

Nice! I used to catch bait this way until I started using a cast net. Much more effective.
John, could you recommend a castnet (make/model)?
Panzer Medical , I like the Betts Old Salt series. They strike a good balance between price, availability, and weight per foot of lead line. If you’re just learning to throw a cast net then I might would learn on a more economical net. When purchasing a cast net things to consider are size and type of bait and depth of water. I use a cast net to catch shrimp, jumping mullet minnows, and golden shiners for bait. A five to seven foot net works best for me. The five foot is easier to handle, the seven foot covers more area. Catching your own bait can help you catch more and bigger fish and also makes you less dependent on bait shops.

Cast nets aren't allowed in MN. Dip nets are ok in non infested waters only, last I checked.
@@hodfishing5123 Actially you can get a permit to use them here in MN. Must be new because I just recently heard it being discussed on another youtube channel.
I think you need to use a cane pole the next time you go fishing for bait. 😀

I use a octopus size 4 hook with a split shot weight(bobber is optional) and for bait use a chunk of worm or ball up a small piece of bread those are the best baits
When I was younger I used to catch Creek Chub and Shiners all the time. I've caught Creek Chubs between 10" -12" in the Creeks around Northeast Iowa. I still catch them today using the same method you are. It's a lot of fun.
Wait til that day you are bait fishing and tie into a nice Smallie. We have Smallmouth in a lot of little creeks here in Northeast and North Iowa.
You should have kept the River Shiners and froze them for Northern fishing this winter on tip ups.
when i catch a bluegill or other sunfish under four inches I call it a Bait Volunteer. Have not caught anything on a volunteer yet but it has been a hot dry summer and water levels are very low, most of the river fish have been taken out by birds, nowhere to hide. or larger fish went to the depths I can't reach without a boat. Better days coming, says rain I heard last night.
Beware that there is poisonous algae killing all kinds of critters, including dogs, deer, elk, fish, cows, you name it that is really bad this year.

Hahahaha. As a child, and were a lot of us kids, we each had a stick with a piece of line tied on it, a piece of dry wood as a bobber and we had to find our own bait. We dug fishing worms I old cow manure around the barn or chicken manure, caught crickets, grasshoppers for general fishing or turned over stumps and rotting logs and chased down field mice specifically to catch really big large mouth bass in the pond. Good times.

I like to use butter worms. Thread them on the hook through the tip of the tail and pop the tip of the hook out through the hard head. I usually catch many baits before having to Rebait.

If you use a trap its way more effective we catch them by the dozens in our traps in Minnesota. Red tails are a high dollar minnow
I don’t use a bobber or sinkers the creek is shallow enough and you can feel them a lot better avoiding them swallowing hook

Have any old rock quarry ponds around your area? That's where Golden Shiner's typically use to come from. Sport Shop's around here quit carrying them many moon's ago, but I don't know who even supplied them back then to the Sport Shop's even though I found out later where most of them came from(rock quarry ponds).
I'll take the shiners, all day long.
Shiners are very fun fish to catch, they instantly take your bait and run.
Bite should be on for big eyes cool nights, last few times out goose hunt n fish seem to be on feeding frenzy.good vid good luck fishing!

Hi, I am very interested in doing this, this coming spring as I have always bought bait from the local bait shop. I am wondering what time of day is best and should the water be mucky, or kind of clear? Any help is appreciated!
It should be clear is and it doesn’t matter when you do it
Honestly it depends on the water system. Where I am at the water is almost always very muddy because these rivers have a clay bottom. You can catch them at any point during the day. I have caught them in very clear streams as well.

Are traps legal? In WI they have regulated bait so close due to VHS. We can only use bait in the body of water it was caught in.
Regulations varie quite a bit. Here I'm not sure exactly how it would work in many areas because I am catching minnows in rivers better rate between large lakes. To me that would make any body of water attached to that river part of the body of water

Depends. You have to check your regulations where you are. I just made a video on how to catch them. How someone uses them is their responsibility.
From what I've read you can't take them from an infested water.
What are the regulations on this process? Are you limited by number or season? What about transport from between bodies of water? Sure seems like a great idea to save a little money and still be catching fish!
There are a bunch of regulations and they varie depending on where you're from. I urge people to check their regulations before catching or transporting any

I just show people how to catch them. They gotta read the full regs themselves. Plus if you are catching them from a river every single body of water if flows through is considered it's body of water

That's a great idea but just a word of caution here, some states have strict rules about using minnows taken from other bodies of water. It has to do with the transfer of fish diseases. Sport shops are supposed have their minnows all tested. I'm sure you know this but some who read this may not. Check the rules first.
Yes I'm aware of it. These were taken out of a river that runs through quite a few bodies of water. So they technically came from every lake it runs through. Everyone else should be responsible enough to read the regulations as well.

check your laws in alot of states it is illegal to transport live baitfish from one body of water to another, unfortunately. i used to always catch my own bait. :{
It is here also but if you're catching them in a river between bodies of water then you aren't doing that.
