  • In this video, we'll explore the new StarNet integration within Siril. StarNet is a powerful tool for image segmentation, which can separate the stars from the background in astrophotography images. This allows for more accurate processing and enhancement of the overall image quality. I'll walk you through how to use the StarNet integration within Siril, step-by-step, and provide tips and tricks for getting the best results.

    You’ve got me addicted to Siril with your tutorials which are very good and easy to follow. I managed to get the new Starnet tool working and whilst I think it’s ok I still prefer to take the 2 files back into Photoshop for further processing, particularly the use of Star Xterminator which is an awesome tool for noise reduction. I’ve played around with NR in Siril and I’m not particularly impressed with it ….. of course it may be my ignorance! Thanks for sharing 🤝

    This is a great addition to Siril and your video is excellent, thanks for putting this together.
    I also want to caution anyone using this on another bug I just found. In the evening I left it running on a sequence of 253 images, when I got up in the morning it was on image 157 and suddenly started erroring out with Siril and starnet both reporting that it could not find the .../process directory (this on OSX). I poked around and could find nothing wrong so I exited Siril and restarted.
    This seemed like an easy issue to solve w/o losing the 8 or 9 hours of work that had already been done. I simply went into the sequence and disabled the first 156 images leaving the remainder enabled. I then started Starnet back up to process the enabled images in the sequence.
    WARNING WARNING Will Robinson! (Showing my age). Apparently the starnet processing explicitly deletes all of the starless* files when it starts and so I lost the overnight run.
    User beware.

    Great videos, thank you! Recently started using Siril as my main stacking and editing sw. Now I am wondering in which order Siril image processing activities should be done to get optimal result. Crop, photometric color calibration, background extraction, removing green noise, noise removal, starnet processing and stretching the image.

    • @DeepSpaceAstro
      @DeepSpaceAstro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Besides the functions where it's recommended to be still in a linear state, I think it's up to you what you feel works best. For me I usually do crop, background extraction, photometric color calibration, removing green noise (if needed), noise removal, remove the stars, stretch, touch-ups in Photoshop, and then back in Siril to recompose the stars for the final image. Sometimes I skip the noise reduction and do that with Topaz DeNoise in PS.

    Just found your channel and I'm really enjoying it. One question about star removal and background extraction. Do you think it will affect the BE algorithm if I remove all the stars first and then use BE with the auto sample generation? The first image I'm trying with Siril is very star rich. It would be much easier to generate the samples if there were no stars present.

    • @DeepSpaceAstro
      @DeepSpaceAstro  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could yes but you may find that you would then need to run it on the starmask as well. Another option would be to manually place the sample points, you don't need that many when using RBF. In the end, it doesn't hurt to experiment.

    More great stuff... I'm trying to learn Siril by using Seestar subs (with the Seestar script). From what I gather, any Siril image you want to work in Photoshop (CS6) must be saved as a tif file (like to your desktop). Then, after the PS tweak, let Siril try to open that tif file and and it will be converted back to a fit file so you can add your worked stars back in? Thanks for your thoughts or corrections, Michael

    • @DeepSpaceAstro
      @DeepSpaceAstro  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you save it out as a .tif, make sure it's 16bit. Open in in PS and save when you're done. Open the .tif in Siril, and save it as a 32bit .fit. then you can use that .fit for recomposition.

    Very happy to come across your tutorials. Excellent work. I use Siril and Photoshop.
    Assuming I’m doing star removal from the Star Processing menu while linear…
    Would you do Deconvolution prior to the star removal? I think that’s necessary because SiriL is using the stars to create the Deconvolution math on the rest of the image, correct?
    I also wonder whether to perform some star reduction with the starmask fit, and if so, how so. I just did some by the stretching of the mask image in Recomposition, putting SP HP and BP at .002/.90/.05 then allowing a large stretch.
    My challenge is a 2855mm native fl with 3.76n on the ASI2600 sensor. I use an 0.62 reducer and Bin 2x2 in the camera but tight stars has been a challenge so far.

    • @DeepSpaceAstro
      @DeepSpaceAstro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes decon first then star removal. That's how I usually reduce the stars, by stretching them in with the recomp. However, this may help with a final image as well. th-cam.com/video/Na6GzKozpCI/w-d-xo.html

    • @alansheiness8148
      @alansheiness8148 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeepSpaceAstro Yes I installed that script as well. To test my understanding, one could run that script after all processing was done as a final tweaker process- perhaps modifying the 0.20 given that I would have already done my Star Processing and separate background stretches, and already used the Recomposition stretch to limit the amount of stars brought back in. But it could do a ‘little more’ given that Recomposition did flatten the two files back into one.

    I tried to use the Siril beta plus Starnet 2 to process C2022E3 comet data in a manner somewhat to how you did it with the 1.0.6 version. My approach was like this:
    - preprocess the lights (flat, bias integration) to get the pp_lights_.seq
    - background extraction on that sequence
    - Starnet2 to remove the stars from the sequence
    - Create a new sequence with the new starless_* .fits files
    - Comet register this last sequence
    That does not work because apparently the fits header information is not maintained across the Starnet process and this is required so that the comet registration can get the internal timestamp and thereby properly interpolate the comet position. Too bad as I think this would be a handy way to do it. Maintaining the fits meta data across the process is possible (either by writing it as meta data to the tiff or via cut-n-paste transfer from fits to fits) so maybe someday that will happen. ;). Meanwhile I had to back up and use the register & export sequence shenanigans you showed in your earlier video. ;)
    Thanks for the method!

    • @DeepSpaceAstro
      @DeepSpaceAstro  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting because they deprecated the Python script I used in the video saying this was the replacement. When you used Starnet to remove the stars from the sequence, was it from the registered sequence? I haven't tried running through the process myself yet to see how it changes using the integration.

    • @BruceMallett
      @BruceMallett ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeepSpaceAstro Yes, it took me a while to realize that two registrations are necessary to process a comet: one to align the stars (keeps the comet from moving around due to "dithering") and then a second on that registered sequence using the comet align registration. After doing the first (global star align) I ran these through starnet (not saving the starmask .. see below) and then comet-aligned the result.
      I did a cheat for the star field. Given that the comet is moving, I went back and took about 100 shots of just the stars after the comet had moved out. I was lucky to get a break in the clouds for two nights in a row, on the first I shot the comet, saved the sequence I used for that in N.I.N.A., and then reused that same sequence the second night to get just the stars. I used Siril to process the starfield, copied over my reference pp_light from the Siril comet session to the starfield session, created a sequence that combined all of the starfield pp_light FITs files with that one from the comet session, designated that one as the reference, and did a registration. I then disabled that one FITs file when I did the stacking.
      I used the new recombine function in Siril to put the comet and starfields together. This requires a bit of Photoshop trickery to match the cropped down image of the comet with the size of the starfield. The end result was not too bad.
      Btw: I experimented with the Desaturate and Full Resynthesis. The later is cool but a little to aggressive for my taste, tends to look artificial esp. with the deep black background that results.

      Umm that's the whole idea of these videos. To help others understand and be able to use the software. It's far from being incomplete and buggy, but if you're having issues I kindly invite you to watch my series. ;-)

      I meant Phil Segre, not you Rich! Keep up the great work. I looked at Siril 2 years ago and found it incomprehensible. Now, with your youtube channel, it has real potential , especially glad to see the live stack features, as i consider myself more of an EAA guy right now.
