    I remember I got Season 1 on VHS for Christmas 1995. I remember being really grateful because at the time one season cost about £70, which was a 'big present' back in those days.

    I have been meaning to rewatch the X-Files for the second time - I watched it on cable tv and then in 2012-2013 I watched the show again (the best way is to marathon a season, wait for a while and watch other stuff and then get back to another season). Season 10 was a reunion of epic proportions but season 11 has been a letdown for me so far (I stopped watched after 4 episodes and must get back to it. I will probably start all over again from season 1 after the World Cup ends in July.

    Just picked up the blu ray set, which included the 11th season. Cost around $170AUD, but with the Boxing Day sale, got it for $125.00. Can't wait to watch it all over again, and in glorious HD.
    And I played the PS1 game numerous times over, back in the day. Absolutely loved it. Did have the PS2 game as well. Also thought it was really good.

      Being such a long show, I might have to alternate it with another show(s), to avoid being burnt out, like you mentioned on your video.

      Just got the blu boxset from JB for AUD $125. Havent started watching yet but will do soon, really look forward to seeing the PQ on these.
      Course I had to buy the movies sep as they are not included on the seasons 1-11 set.
      Got the double feature movie pack on blu for AUD $16.
      Its gonna be an x-files X-travaganza 😁
      Edit: I also had the PS1 game in the day, was mostly FMV with choices to make and quicktime events from memory, still.. I enjoyed at the time.
      I didnt have the PS2 version in the day but with the wonders of emulation I might have to try it.

    $125 on the entire series is a steal my friend and to think there's people actually complaining about the first seasoned of Game of Thorns at $44 on 4K Blu-ray? Then I tell them how insanely expensive most tv or cable series were just on DVD alone or hell the VHS versions of Star Trek episodes forget having a box set of the entire series since it was astronomical expensive back then.

    Bottom line, the 1-4 seasons, on Blu-ray suck, because they have the incorrect aspect ratio of 16:9. They 1-4 Blu-rays should of kept the correct 4:3 aspect ratio.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not exactly. I literally address that in the video. Those seasons aired cropped. The entire series was filmed in Super 35 and cropped to 4x3 for the first few seasons, but with 16x9 in mind because they knew it was just around the corner. You actually see substantially more image in the 16x9 version in most shots. It is not the same thing as an older 4x3 show being cropped to 16x9, not even close.
      The X-Files DOP always had 16x9 in mind and filmed in "widescreen safe" full frame Super 35 until it went natively 16x9. Look at screenshots comparing the two. The gain on the sides is far more than the slight cropping off the top and bottom.

    $150 per season? Wow. Here in America, season sets have always been about $40-60. $150 would be the cost of a complete series set, not one season. The pricing in Canada for a DVD season at that time was ridiculous.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The U.S. price was about 120.00 per season. Bear in mind, the whole "TV on DVD" thing was brand new at the time. It's nothing to do with pricing in Canada, that's how FOX priced them in both the U.S. and Canada at the time. The original season sets of the Star Trek shows were priced the same.

    Can't complain about the picture quality. Perfect. Lots of nice detail. However...
    Why have they re-formatted the picture (for seasons 1-4) for widescreen TV's? And changed the font of the titles? I hope that's only for the first few seasons. It may seem trivial, but it's something I noticed straight away when they showed it on TV...

    Is it true that they cropped the original 4:3 aspect ratio to 16:9?

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not exactly the way you're probably thinking. The first two seasons were filmed in an aspect ratio that wasn't quite 4:3, but a wider aspect ratio that was somewhere between 4:3 and 16:9. It was cropped to fit the 4:3 aspect ratio of the original broadcasts. They are converted to 16:9 for the Blu-ray, opening up the sides more and cropping slightly on the top and bottom. You actually get more overall image area in the majority of shots in the 16:9 version than in the 4:3 version. Effects shots that only exist in 4:3 are cropped to fit 16:9. It looks very, very good and was done extremely carefully to provide the maximum image area possible on a shot-by-shot basis.
      As of Season 3, the show was filmed natively in 16:9 with only effects shots done in 4:3. So in that case, there is no cropping at all for the majority of the show and you are seeing far more than you would have seen in the original 4:3 TV presentation. It was actually cropped to fit the 4:3 aspect ratio for the original broadcasts of Seasons 3 and 4 so you see far more in the 16:9 version, seeing it as it was actually filmed and intended to be seen. Effects shots were still being done in 4:3, so they are cropped to fit.
      From Season 5 onward the show was done completely in 16:9. X-Files was actually one of the first U.S. shows to start shooting in that format so early on. As it was never a very effects-heavy show, the few cases where effects shots have been cropped to fit really don't affect the overall presentation that much, especially given how much more image were are seeing in the first two seasons now, plus finally getting to see Seasons 3 and 4 in full 16:9 as they were originally filmed.
