    Fantastic video, man! I used to be such a HUGE G.I.Joe fan. I still have like close to 1,000 3 3/4" figures. Incredible VHS Tapes too, wow. The Foot Locker is insane. I love the Dog Tag/USB with the Silent Comics on it. How damn cool is that lol Love the artwork on the 2 different sets with the Joe's and Cobra's. Wow they really blur out the faces on the kids? That's really wild. I've never seen the Fan Film before. That's awesome that you contributed to Shout Factory! AND that it made it into the set, that's awesome lol Really awesome. I need to pick up the original movie on Bluray. I wasn't aware of the DIC series up until a few years back. I picked up Season 1, and I still need to snag Season 2. I definitely noticed the change in voice actors. It's different but it's still G.I.Joe and it's really cool that it was released. G.I.Joe Resolute was actually pretty good. Very disappointed that it got cancelled. Such a shame that they don't continue with greatness lol I like the look of the Complete Series set too but if I wind up getting either it'll probably be the Foot Locker set...or knowing me...both lol Great video, man! Love the outtakes at the end lmao I completely know how it is lol I go through so many cuts and retakes with my videos lol So that was fun to see.

    Those big boxes are beautiful. I have an affinity for vhs tapes. Obviously it's not for the quality, even though there is something to be said about the quality of video, of which it has that is entirely its own. Maybe its the fact that its analog. No one can deny the eye catching original artwork that puts most of today's photoshopped upper body/floating heads dvd and bd covers to shame. Luckily some companies are resurrecting old cover art for new releases. Either way, thanks for showing some vhs off finally. Been waiting soooo long for you to do some mini vhs retrospectives. :)

      +Get Real Even as a kid of the 2000s(I was born in 1995), I can certainly tell you that there wasn't quite an experience like going into a video rental store and picking up & looking at VHS copies of various stuff. I have fond childhood memories of Hollywood Video, which, sadly, no longer exists. But, I'll always cherish those memories. Even if I can only remember little fragments of said memories.

    I didn't get the footlocker, it didn't come with anything I really wanted that the Season sets didn't already have, plus the Season sets came in slim cases with different(and I think) better artwork.

    Actually Rhino made it to Season 2: Part 1, Part 2 was never released though. That Part 1 set I think actually had a slight error where it has the UK re-dub of G.I. Joe as Action Force in one episode I think, but I'm not certain, the whole episode wasn't re-dubbed, just any mention of G.I. Joe became Action Force and swears were changed where it was released exclusively on video here in the UK. Cool to see your name above Neil Ross' name, you defeated Shipwreck! :D BTW POINTS for saying Marvel/Sunbow! You sir deserve a gold star for that alone! :D Also Morgan Lofting returned to play the Baroness in the DIC series. Why were they going to split M.A.S.K. up, that's easy, some people can't afford massive box sets and it's nice to have choices. Trust me, it IS nice to have choices. ;) Also, no G.I. Joe Renegades?! :D Yeah I only mentioned it because I think Shout! Factory put out that series too? :D I see you're dressed in all green too, nice job soldier! :)

    Cool review, Sean. I have the individual season sets from Shout! Factory as i did not have the cash to get the footlocker set back then. I decided it would be easier just to get them that way unlike with Transformers where I was able to eventually get the Matrix set before it went out of print, i also have the old 2000 release of the movie from Rhino which is the full screen version only. I might get the Shout release eventually and get rid of the older one for consistency as well as the widescreen version, as the old release is definitely from an unrestored master and doesn't look as nice as the series proper.
    The individual releases do have most of the extras that the footlocker set has, only without the voice actor featurette and the Larry Hamma interview as you mentioned. I also really like the artwork on the cases and discs.

    That was an exhaustive retrospect on all things GI Joe on video. Highly appreciated Sean. I've not seen much of this show at all, I've always been put off because I get the impression it will be full of that American Military Patriotism which can be nauseating quite often to me. Is it like that alot? or is it actually just cheesy with that stuff?
    Oh and the outtakes at the end of this were great lol, thanks for all the hard work you put in

    I was probably split 50/50 between GI Joe and Transformers during the 80's and 90's for their shows and toys.

    Currently have Rhino's G.I. Joe season 1 boxsets (part-1 and part-2). Plus Hasbro's individual disc releases of the 4 mini-series (Mass Device, Revenge, Pyramid and Arise; they apparently included these as a bonus with toys?). That gives me a good chunk of the series on DVD, minus season 2. I've been dying to buy the Shout Factory complete set, but heard the video quality is noticeably sub-par. Any truth to that? Rhino's season 1 looks *gorgeous* since it comes from a 35mm film transfer, and unlike the mess they did with Transformers, actually offers the original audio AND mostly finished/glitch-free version versions of episodes. I bought Shout's Transformers Matrix of Leadership boxset, and while far better than Rhino's mess, the video quality is a kinda lackluster. If their transfer is about the same, I'd be OK, but haven't seen any reviews to compare. Oh, the Hasbro transfer of the mini series looks like a VHS transfer (if not worse) so I really feel like I only have season 1 of G.I. Joe in my collection.

      The G.I. Joe sets from Shout Factory also used the 35mm prints, they look great. As for Transformers, I covered this in detail in my 5-part review of the Matrix of Leadership 25th Anniversary DVD set - they used as much of the 35mm workprints as possible, but as you know those prints were riddled with errors. So Shout used as much footage as possible form those, then used inserts form broadcast master tapes to fix the errors. So while the picture quality has some inconsistencies as a result, the episodes are far more complete and correct than the Rhino versions. And none of that awful 5.1 mix, just a subtle stereo effects applied to the original mono audio.
      There is literally no way for those episodes to look better unless the inserts are fully redone from scratch in HD or upscaled and colour graded from the master tapes. An undertaking likely too expensive for a studio to want to undertake, especially given how very niche the original show is by this point. It's all about what kind of source elements actually exist to be used. The Shout set sacrifices some visual fidelity in favor of having the episodes properly complete. There was no other way to do it at the time, other than to only use the workprints in which case all of the error and incomplete animation sequences would still be present.

      @@zaranyzerak - Hasbro actually has all of the G.I. Joe seasons 1 and 2 (and the earlier two mini-series) freely available for streaming on TH-cam. They're almost indistinguishable from the Rhino G.I. Joe print (in sharpness, color saturation and use of DNR clean-up). Far, far better than the washed out mess Hasbro did earlier with the 'DVD Battles' toy bundle. Could you have a look, and let me know if the streaming episodes compare to your Shout Factory boxset? I'd much rather pay for a physical copy on my shelf, than downloaded digital versions...IF they're comparable. th-cam.com/video/RmsbgGz_5RE/w-d-xo.html
      And yes, I noticed Shout's Transformers transfer is a bit of a mix in quality (passable I'll admit!), but I think it's all tape masters. My brother has the Rhino season 1 boxset, and I also have Rhino's season 4. Terrible sound aside (god, and is it awful!) and the animation errors abound, the picture quality is vastly better than my Shout Transformers. The color saturation is leaps and bounds better. However I'd never watch it, I'm too much of a purist to accept all those missing scenes, animation errors and other glitches. I saw it back in the day they they aired, so I'd notice (I think we grew up the same time btw, I was exactly 11 years old when G.I. Joe's Mass Device aired!). Great videos incidentally, I'm a big fan of collecting physical copies of shows and movies!

    Thanks for the nice video review. I don't have this on DVD yet myself. How do you think this set compares to the Rhino releases? I've read that Rhino added a 5.1 mix which is not included in these newer sets.

    • @zaranyzerak
      @zaranyzerak  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They did 5.1 mixes for the Transformers as well. You're not missing anything, those mixes were trash that added a bunch of sounds that didn't exist in the original mixes. Lame attempt to "modernize" the sounds. The Shout Factory releases for Transformers and G.I. Joe simply add a subtle stereo effect which is quite nice and doesn't remove or change any of the sounds.

      Yes, as a series of 12" action figures and accessories. The 80s version was a reboot/reimagining of the entire franchise. Here's the debut commercial from 1964: th-cam.com/video/9X382bCvVvo/w-d-xo.html
