  • In the heart of Cheshire's tranquil countryside, the annual Earthy Championships come alive with an electrifying challenge: the World Worm Charming Championship. Originating in 1980 by John Bailey, then deputy headmaster of Willaston County Primary School, this peculiar yet captivating contest grants each competitor a modest 3x3 metre plot and thirty minutes to lure the elusive worms to the surface.
Legend has it that in the inaugural event, Tom Shufflebotham set an unmatched record, charming 511 worms to the top. The rules are strict-no drugs, stimulants, or water to coax the worms out. The most effective technique, known locally as 'twanging,' involves rhythmically vibrating a garden fork inserted 15 cm into the soil. Digging is strictly forbidden!
As the starting signal echoes, participants and their 'Gillies' (assistants) spring into action, each plot a hive of frenzied activity. Techniques are as varied as they are inventive: some charm with music, using drums, recorders, and even didgeridoos, while most rely on the trusty pitchfork and creative vibrations.
As the final seconds of charming expire, the pots brimming with worms are tallied. This year, it was local hero Alex Godfrey who triumphed, charming an impressive 195 worms to claim the title.

This is reminiscent of political worms, shake them and they vanish underground. 🪱
