We need more smaller cars such as the Picanto. Larger vehicles come with higher upfront price tags and additional driving costs compared with smaller vehicles. Not all of us want or need an SUV or larger crossover. And congratulations Matt for surpassing 400,000 subscribers!
For people complaining about this review and suggesting Matt isn't genuine... I'd argue that Matt often gets excited about cars that are a bit interesting and not traditionally cool.
I’ve always heard it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car badly. Put me in a Porsche I’d not have the abilities to push it to limit whith out getting killed, but I think I could have a great time briskly rowing this through the gears in this tiny KIA. Very good review.
Valid point , but it's surprisingly good for people who are petrolheads too. What it lacks in outright horsepower it gives back in lightness and we all know lightness is good for agility and handling. Get a GT-Line and they don't look that bad at all. In reality non-petrolheads will instead get a Nissan Juke on finance, run it on cheap tyres, never bother washing it and litter the interior with McDonald's wrappers
My wife and I purchased a KIA Niro as our city car. I own a ‘96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I often opt to drive the KIA. 58 mpg makes the choice for me. It’s also a pleasure to drive.
It's a reasonably good quality city car for commuting, and it'll be pretty damn good at it. The 7 year warranty is a strong pull, if a car like this is your bag.....Kia's reliability record is good...
@@TB1M1 it depends on what model tho. My Rondo and Rio both have close to 300k. No issues minus the normal wear, tear, and rust. It's really, only the older 2.0T GDI and 2.4 NA GDI engines with issues. No more issues tho after those generation of cars.
I predicted two years ago when I got my Sportage Mk 4 GT line S that pretty soon they will be selling more cars worldwide than BMW. They have come on leaps and bounds. I was in the Niro full electric the other day whilst mine was in for a warranty job. It was amazing and so quick!
Thanks for the review, I had one of these (last gen) for 3 years it was excellent. only 100 to service at Kia and the warranty is amazing. Your 100% right it feels big inside for a small car. Look we all want an AMG. M4 or a Range Rover but for what this is its amazing.
I've got the previous GT Line s with on a 23 plate with a 1 L turbo 99bhp. It's like an old school hot hatch. I can't rate this car enough for what it is. Proper hand brake, great box, Electric windows all round, keyless start and entry, wireless charging, heated seats and Sterling wheel the list goes on...... Bought last last year for £16,250.
I think it’s right to mix it up a bit. I love the lottery of the ‘I bought a lemon for £2.50’ videos, but no harm in Matt giving us his views on some of the new stuff that’s out there. No problem with Kia either - they are fantastic. I’m on my second. New Picantos in particular are fantastic to drive.
I have a 21 X-Line, got it when I first passed a year ago, no issues at all, drives like a dream doing 50miles a day, looking forward to getting one of these new facelift ones in the future, just a shame they don't have a turbo
I have its cousin, the Hyundai i10 Active, a’ ‘24 model year, with the 62bhp 1.litre engine. Cracking car in my opinion with low running costs and comfortable to travel in. This is my 7th i10 and it’s the best so far, and yes I am a pensioner😂👍
Looked at this as we needed a second small car and to be honest it wasn't great, a poor dealership experience, price was silly for what the car is and the removal of the 99bhp turbo model which we had previously owned and loved is a poor move. We eventually went for an Aygo X which has a better warranty, much better finished interior, looks better externally IMO,but admittedly the same underpowered engine but it was £50 a month cheaper than the Kia. We've had it 3 months now and it's a brilliant car, 68 mpg average for our work runs up the A6, I think it beats the Kia in all areas but each to their own, if we all liked the same life would be boring. Nice video nonetheless 👍
Have to agree about the removal of the turbo because it takes a car that used to do 0-60 in just under ten seconds to a car that now does it in over 13 seconds; that's half the fun of owning the car gone!
@leestockton9367 that little 1.0 turbo was a great engine, can't understand why they got rid of it, the GT line I'd a much poorer car because of that decision and Matt dropping it into 3rd and being impressed in this video is a very odd, I've driven it and it is beyond slow 🤷♂️
The only disappointment for me is Kia ditched the GT Line S with the 100hp engine, which I saw several reviews of saying it was like an old school baby-Hot-Hatch and a lot of fun. I'm guessing it's gone because of the fine margins in the segment. The Picanto in general is the story of Kia in a nutshell; once the choice of people who didn't care about cars and only cared about budget, but now a genuinely competitive, compelling option.
Please Matt, can we have more of these new car reviews. Real information from a real (and hot😊) person, for real people. No frippery and nonsense, just really useful practical information. Much as I like your used car reviews, its just nice to hear about the car rather than what brand of tyres it has on each wheel. Great stuff ;)
Great to see you do a review on a new model and the car seems impressive and all the car many need. Being the owner of a triple I'd never do it again and would always go for a 4 banger. Great vid as always.
This review has an wiff of the top gear second hand challange when they searched what they could buy for the price of a new nissan pixo. To be honest a restaurant near me has a kia picanto as the company car for shopping trips and local deliveries. Everytime I pass it I feel it has 50’s fiat 500 and 60’s mini vibes of a car that is enough. I feel we aren’t grateful for how practical and comfortable small cars have gotten and it’s a shame. When I was younger I was fascinated of the acces Dacia Logan that didn’t even have a stereo, but the thought that you could have a car in it’s purest essence makes you question how much car do you actually need in life? If any at all
Hi Matt, a few comments re moving into "regular" car reviews...some encouraging, some not. I have no complaints on adding to the mix of rescuing cars, reviewing used good ones (and the not so good ones), and those road trips to various UK and European locales...to me its always good! Keep up the content, and keep up that northern soul! Cheers!
Small city cars are not dead yet! As someone who has owned 2 VW ups, this class of car will always have a place in my heart! Great video as always Matt, I just bought a VW T-Cross last week (yes I gave in to the small SUV trend, despite previously judging it) and honestly, love the car! I learned from your channel to look for one with full history, low mileage and do a vehicle history check. Something I didn't do before buying my previous Mazda and definitely regretted! Thanks for everything Matt... Would like to know your honest opinion of the T-Cross and small SUVs :)
Good review. I'm gonna swap the X5 for this!! Seriously though, if it was a sponsored video, you would have to tell us to comply with YT terms. I don't understand why people are getting so upset, like it's some kind of conspiracy 👽🦎🐍
I think I know why Matt likes it. They drive like an old school car. Light and nimble with a sweet little gearbox but still have mod cons. Sensible heating controls rather than having to go through a stupid menu etc. the picanto is more Mini than a MINI will ever be. Cracking little car. The recently discontinued picanto with the 3 cylinder turbo engine is a real pocket rocket. Don’t knock these until you’ve driven one. 👍🏻
I have a Suzuki Swift sport bought 3 years ago. It cost less than £16000 and is not quite as frugal as the Kia but much more rapid and will be equally reliable. Are they not a thing any more in Britain? Top sellers in the southern hemisphere and all made in Japan. Fully agree with Matt that many people buy cars which are unnecessary for their needs when something like this is great 99% of the time.
We had a 2018 Kia Sedona minivan and the Kia's safety tech is top notch. Very reliable with only routine maintenance at a Kia dealership which was very reasonably priced. I now have a 2022 Honda Pilot (meh) and I wish I had the Sedona back!
Hey! I'm 60 and would definitely go for the GT-Line S (auto). Maybe soon. Can't be bothered with high powered cars which don't fit in parking spaces any more. I love this car. Great review. 🚗
The interior looks very similar to my previous shape GT-Line (not S), but strangely in that older model the CarPlay is wireless so it's interesting to hear that's not the case anymore. It's a shame they don't do the 99bhp turbo 1 litre anymore, as that gives a welcome bit of extra power when needed (I'm a weirdo who loves small cars but will take them on arguably unsuitable journeys on holidays to Italy, South of France, Spain etc), but overall I think Kias these days are very well built cars offering a quality that feels like it's from a tier above. Really, these should easily fulfil the needs of a large number of motorists.
Bought a year old one last year. The T-GDi GT Line. Came with fatal turbo fault and dealer quoted 12 weeks to get the part in. So I cancelled the order for full refund Got a Hyundai i10 1.2 instead with similar performance and spec. The 1.0 sounded like a tractor on start up same as the Kia GT Overall we are delighted with the i10. I do gather from the dealer both Kia and Hyundai have part supply issues
you are the only reviewer who acknowledged the design of the steering wheel. it's a bit bmw-like. I have no idea about Kia but can tell it has a perfect steering wheel design!
There's just a problem with the Picanto, it's called the Sandero. For 15k you get a very well specced Dacia with a lot more space and boot, and a 90hp turbo engine
That manufacture uses Renault running gear etc. Some old early 2000s and some abit more modern if they are using the 90hp tce engine although I test drove a 0.9ltr 90hp tce captur and it was dog slow. No real pick up and not very satisfactory on the move, so the picanto will probably feel a little more punchy
Dacia uses old and new Renault underpinnings/running gear and the 90hp 0.9 turbo engine is sluggish. Drove an older Captur with that engine and just no pulling both low down or higher up. The picanto would probably feel more punchy.
The last automated manual I drove was in a 2009 Mitsubishi Colt, when my MINI CooperS was getting warranty work done on that timing chain issue (that ruined the turbo). I thought I’d suffer whiplash aster driving it….the Colt, that is.
I have a new Sportage that I love, but I think when I do change vehicles next time, I will probably opt for one of these or very similar, because now I have retired I am not doing the mileage I had envisaged. So a small shopping car and run around would make a better fit. 😎👍
A very good, informative and comprehensive review.I can't wait to drive my new Picanto.I find both the new front and design of the car so cool! I wish the engine was more powerful. Both choices offered (62 or 79 horsepower) are honestly weak.I know it's a tiny city car but a more powerful engine would have made this new Picanto a perfect city car
I know its a bit bigger but i would rather get a Yaris. I drove one recently and it was insanely good. Plus the fuel economy easily beats this. I was getting about 68mpg in the city. Incredible.
The Picanto is often considered the 'car for people not interested in cars' but I disagree. The engineering and sense of logic is outstanding for the world most of us live in - and it's a bundle of fun as well. Respect to Kia!
I've never given any of your videos a 'thumbs down' because I enjoy them immensely. However, it's hard to believe you're not being sponsored by Kia after so many of your glowing reports. This video is no more than an advert for the brand. Am I right or wrong?
looks nice as theres not many other small cars nowadays, eben the vw up is now discontinued.....but its expensive, i ve just bought a new mazda 2 90ps for 18k.
I will be 60 next month, and I would get the GT Line! But we don't get these in the States. I do like seeing what others are driving...and I also think it fine you can feature the occasional new car! Here in States we had a spell where it was cheaper to buy new than used!
Matt, great video yet again. They are a good little car for the city but, you won't see any of them in rural Australia, the fuel tank range won't get you to the next pub in some areas. I did an exercise on price comparison UK vs Aus. You said the GT-Line with the 1.2L engine was GBP15,595+1,200=GBP16,795. At today's exchange rate, that equals AUD32,930. However, the stated new car price for exactly the same specs (even same colour - the Sporty Blue is a $520 premium option in Aus) available on dealer's showroom floor in Melbourne today is AUD24,010 = GBP12,245. That is the drive away price that also includes registration (road tax) and compulsory 3rd party insurance. That is a massive GBP4,500 difference. I am a retired car industry veteran and used to doing these price comparisons and I have double checked everything. There were a few other 'dealer demos' priced slightly higher due to accessories and after market add-ons. The highest price was AUD27,000 (GBP13,765) still a GBP3,000 difference below the UK base price. I can only think that the cost difference is in getting the car from the KIA Denhee plant in South Korea to Australia is that much less than getting it all the way to the UK. The other factor is you have a 20% VAT, Aus has a 10% GST paid to the Federal Govt (same thing, diff name - Goods & Services Tax) and we also have a 4% stamp duty paid to the various State Govts on car sales. All of that is included in the prices I quoted above. Price will vary slightly from State to State due to different Stamp Duty rates. In Aus, the 1.2L GT-Line engine is rated at 62Kw or 83bhp almost 34% above the base 1.0L which would make a big difference to responsiveness and performance.. Finally, KIA are well known in Aus for spending a lot of time (up to 6 months) testing pre-production pilot cars here getting the suspension right on demanding Australian roads. www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2024-kia-picanto-gt-line-auto-my24/SHRM-AD-6392175/
@@RobNMelbourne I live in Australia too and noticed the big difference in prices compared to UK. You will find similar differences with VW Golf and many others. Whilst many Australians complain about the price of new cars in Australia, we don’t really know how well off we are. Cheaper petrol in Australia also makes motoring a lot cheaper than UK. Plus no extra taxes or restrictions for driving in large cities.
Great video for a great car, Matt. Our second car is a 2009 Chill with the 1.1 64bhp engine, I love driving it, and it is fab around town and country roads/lanes. But you have to boot it all the time to get the best out of it, especially on hills. I would have hoped that the 77bhp would be standard. Our other car, a Škoda, has 86bhp 1.2 turbo, and it is far more flexible and easier to drive. Saving up for another car- will it be another Picanto though? These are totally reliable, and the 7-year warranty is a no-brainer. Well done for promoting, small, ordinary real cars for real people, not egomaniacs.
Very enthusiastic review and I can't see why you are getting some shtick in the comments for it. There are some issues I have seen with this though as we were looking for a smaller car to replace an older 208. Went and looked and test drove this (GT-s line) and the Aygo x as well as the Yaris. Unfortunately I hate to say it but none of them tickled the fancy. You do get a lot of kit on them but the 2016 208 with a phone holder just offers such a better experience in my opinion over the insane prices of the new cars today. Couldn't justify the change for us. The price of new and nearly new cars are horrific at the moment.
I LOVED your video! My son learned to drive in the original Picanto and I enjoyed driving it too. A bit of a "pensionermobile" you say. Well, yes, I am a pensioner and felt quite insulted, as I like to think that I still drive like I did 50 years ago!! But, the modern version being so much of an improvement in drive-ability has got me interested - hopefully for the 1.2 GT LIne S for extra performance.
Hey Matt, not sure what’s happening but this is a different. Personally I prefer your used car reviews and the Bermuda/Spain road trips. That said I love this nippy car and you gave it a great sell! 🎉
I get that you got some sort of arrangement with KIA. But these undercover “i like all KIA models” videos, are not really your best work. Keep doing the what you do best and what got you your subscriptions. Cheers from Denmark 😊
This exact same car, driven on what looks like the same roads, was reviewed last week by 'Tim Rodie Drives Stuff'. I'm guessing that KIA invited TH-camr's en masse down to Surrey for their reviews.
Looks great, but I don't understand why the power figures are lower compared to previous generations. I have a 2015 Picanto with the 1.2 and it produces 85hp according to my country's traffic agency's website. Maybe it is just differences in ratings between countries? This car is not for sale here anymore so I can't really find out
I don't mind Korean cars, i had a Sportage for a very long time, my ex still has it. I don't know if you have a bias but some of the new Chinese cars are very nice. Maybe a review of those some time would be interesting. I have one and i am very pleasantly surprised and happy with it. ??
That's a very cute, little, modern car 🙂 Oh wow, some people don't like when you provide new, various content but then they moan the old one is too boring. You can't please everyone. I am here for a good humour 🤭 and one very handsome youtuber 👀👀👀
Obviously - he reviewed a Sorrento a few days ago. That's another Kia...coincidence? You decide. What's the bet the cash-grabbing ginger shill deletes this comment? LOL
I had one the other day as a courtesy car for an hour or so. As I have an auto they gave me a the auto version of the Picanto. Very nice car, but blimey it was slow. Think of the moon drifting away from Earth, it was that sort of slow. I tried to overtake something on the North Circular Road and it would have been quicker to get the bus! If floor the pedal in my Jogger it will fly, the Picanto sought of went "Oh, If I must". Well built though and looks good but at 6'0" I found it a bit of a squeeze. I think it's the cheapest car in the UK beating the Dacia Sandero.
What about last 2/3 generation Honda Jazz-sophisticated quality. I used to drive a Civic R but following knee surgery and caring duties a Jazz is perfect-especially with the 'magic' cinema style seats.
Hey, Matt, don't be ageist 😂; I'm 58 and have a 21 plate GT-Line S and love it!
Just ordered my Picanto 3 today, with AMT - such a good car.
We need more smaller cars such as the Picanto. Larger vehicles come with higher upfront price tags and additional driving costs compared with smaller vehicles. Not all of us want or need an SUV or larger crossover.
And congratulations Matt for surpassing 400,000 subscribers!
Also the maintenance 😭

you are the only reviewer who acknowledged the design of the steering wheel. it's a bit bmw-like. I have no idea about Kia but can tell it has a perfect steering wheel design!
Fair review: Mrs. is eyeing up a Kia Picanto. 😊👍🏾
Love my 23 plate GT Line. As you say the looks and 7 year warranty made the decision easier
Weekly done, please keep up with the presentations of new cars. Affordable cars❤
Just bought a new Picanto in France, GT Line Premium 1.2 Auto, if you are passing through Normandy, you are welcome to try!
I have recently bought one, the model you are driving, and I love it!
There's just a problem with the Picanto, it's called the Sandero. For 15k you get a very well specced Dacia with a lot more space and boot, and a 90hp turbo engine
A Renault made in Romania - no ta........
@@cliffwilkins9178look around Europe see what ordinary people are buying. Korean better no way and Korea about as stable as ukraine
But nowhere near as reliable!
Great review Matt. Had a Kia Rio 1 Litre 3 cylinder Turbo a few years ago and it was a great fun car and didn't have a hideous electric handbrake.
I have to say IMO most of the new KIA's a looking sharp and bang up to date these day. We had a Sportage as a hire car and I was very impressed
I think the new Kia Picanto is one of my favourite new cars!
The last automated manual I drove was in a 2009 Mitsubishi Colt, when my MINI CooperS was getting warranty work done on that timing chain issue (that ruined the turbo). I thought I’d suffer whiplash aster driving it….the Colt, that is.
Good video Matt 👌🏻👍🏻
Best looking city car bar none in my opinion. Great review Matt 👍🏻
Thanks! 👍
Are you now on the payroll now mate @ kia UK?
I have a new Sportage that I love, but I think when I do change vehicles next time, I will probably opt for one of these or very similar, because now I have retired I am not doing the mileage I had envisaged. So a small shopping car and run around would make a better fit. 😎👍
£17k for 62bhp? Car prices, new and used, are ridiculous.
I was thinking that exact thing not even a turbo engine. Bonkers
Agree, that's a bit shite, I've heard the phrase ' warm hatch ' This one's a freezing cold one😊
Storage bits were exactly the same as every other car I've ever been in, only smaller probably
You can chip tune it to 80 bhp, it will be fast then.
You've got PCP/Personal Leasing to thank for that.... most folk only want to know what the payments will be.
Someone likes KIA 💪
I know its a bit bigger but i would rather get a Yaris. I drove one recently and it was insanely good. Plus the fuel economy easily beats this. I was getting about 68mpg in the city.
Incredible.
Agree. Have driven the new Yaris. Looks neat, super fuel efficient and surprisingly fun to drive.
@@sputumtube you’re wrong. It’s a review.
@@HighPeakAutos If you say so...
looks nice as theres not many other small cars nowadays, eben the vw up is now discontinued.....but its expensive, i ve just bought a new mazda 2 90ps for 18k.
Matt I'm convinced I'm buying one 👍🚗
I will be 60 next month, and I would get the GT Line! But we don't get these in the States. I do like seeing what others are driving...and I also think it fine you can feature the occasional new car! Here in States we had a spell where it was cheaper to buy new than used!
Good vid Matt. The missus is considering one of these, I’m trying to steer her away from the Aygo X, these are far nicer imho.

You'll get 350 miles on a tank - this is more than enough for the majority of Australians
It’s a pointless exercise comparing car prices in Australia with the UK. Model specs are often inferior in UK including less powerful motors.
The price of new and nearly new cars are horrific at the moment.
i just ordered myself one yesterday ready on a 25 plate
I LOVED your video! My son learned to drive in the original Picanto and I enjoyed driving it too. A bit of a "pensionermobile" you say. Well, yes, I am a pensioner and felt quite insulted, as I like to think that I still drive like I did 50 years ago!! But, the modern version being so much of an improvement in drive-ability has got me interested - hopefully for the 1.2 GT LIne S for extra performance.
Cool looking little car
Hey Matt, not sure what’s happening but this is a different. Personally I prefer your used car reviews and the Bermuda/Spain road trips. That said I love this nippy car and you gave it a great sell! 🎉
Lots of good stuff from kia recently, rather one than a Ford or vw nowadays
I get that you got some sort of arrangement with KIA. But these undercover “i like all KIA models” videos, are not really your best work.
Keep doing the what you do best and what got you your subscriptions.
Cheers from Denmark 😊
Best car in it's class
Matt working overtime 😂
They missed a trick not providing a turbo charged engine like the Hyundai i10. Yes it looks the part but It’s far too expensive for a super mini.
Nice presenting Matt. Glad you’re moving into this space. You can’t please everyone all the time. So keep going buddy 👌
Thanks 👍
great video
Must say myself and family have experience of 3 of these models, and all have suffered clutch failures. Hope it's been sorted.
That's a very cute, little, modern car 🙂 Oh wow, some people don't like when you provide new, various content but then they moan the old one is too boring. You can't please everyone. I am here for a good humour 🤭 and one very handsome youtuber 👀👀👀
Nice little car. I imagine the car rental companies will use them.
Mat I think it is auto traders mistake saying the 77 bhp is three cylinders 👍
I still love my pristine 2004 Honda Accord 2.0
Matt, are you getting sponsored by Kia? I never thought id see you getting so excited about a Kia Picanto 💀😄
If you review it for what it is, then there's not much wrong with this Kia.
The 1lte turbo model in the generation before would be the one to have to be fair.
Obviously - he reviewed a Sorrento a few days ago. That's another Kia...coincidence? You decide.
What's the bet the cash-grabbing ginger shill deletes this comment? LOL
It’s a good car. Car people appreciate good cars in all classes
Picanto is actually a great daily driver
Heard too many stories about the warranty not being worth the paper it's written on to buy one.
This Is The Skin Of A Kia, Bella
Lovely part of the country, Surrey - I spent a few days down there recently and also drove past The Gomshall Mill pub... ;p
What about last 2/3 generation Honda Jazz-sophisticated quality. I used to drive a Civic R but following knee surgery and caring duties a Jazz is perfect-especially with the 'magic' cinema style seats.
we test drove an auto and a manual and we are buying the manual GT Line . Agree with all the comments you made !!!!!
