It's fortunate they were caught money laundering because prosecuting the real crime behind all of this would have been difficult, as being a "bad rapper" is somewhat subjective. We're all better off for it.

Yup, Ilya comes from Russia, and they looked for false ID-s in Ukraine/Russian war-zone in Donbas. At some point, they could involve Russian Families in this, and BOY(!) this would not go any "nice and easy" way. They have also been for a while (the time of "The Arab Spring") in Egipt. So quite nicely disrupted places to not look for a pair of BTC frauds. I think Ilya, at some point, simply gave up.

The biggest mystery with this person is how they can presumably have invested significant time, effort, and financial resources into their rapping and still somehow be significantly worse than the average person trying it for the first time.
Being bad at it was part of the gimmick. She called it being a "surrealist rapper"; and all her stuff was very "insidery" and meta-. She kept a lot of the industry folks (producers, video directors, props rental, etc.) paid pretty well for awhile, tho'; for which I give her credit.

It's fortunate they were caught money laundering because prosecuting the real crime behind all of this would have been difficult, as being a "bad rapper" is somewhat subjective. We're all better off for it.
Hm, almost makes me believe that someone stole the bitcoins and gave them to him, because you can get people charged for money laundering but not for being a bad rapper, even if you think that is the bigger crime.
Yup, Ilya comes from Russia, and they looked for false ID-s in Ukraine/Russian war-zone in Donbas.
At some point, they could involve Russian Families in this, and BOY(!) this would not go any "nice and easy" way. They have also been for a while (the time of "The Arab Spring") in Egipt. So quite nicely disrupted places to not look for a pair of BTC frauds.

Working my way through your back catalogue Patrick. Come for the financial analysis, stay for the dry deadpan humour (or the rap analysis, as yet unsure). What a great episode this one is. Bloody hilarious. Its not often i actually literally lol when listening to financial content (though the plain bagel has his moments).
Bagel has cream cheese and lox with this story. He was right: stealing bitcoin's a lot easier than laundering it. Taking bitcoin in a dirty way's one thing, making it seem it came from a cleaner source of income quite another.

The biggest mystery with this person is how they can presumably have invested significant time, effort, and financial resources into their rapping and still somehow be significantly worse than the average person trying it for the first time.
Being bad at it was part of the gimmick. She called it being a "surrealist rapper"; and all her stuff was very "insidery" and meta-. She kept a lot of the industry folks (producers, video directors, props rental, etc.) paid pretty well for awhile, tho'; for which I give her credit.
