Interesting overview. I am a retired CIA, who started at the County of LA in the 1970's, then ARCO, Ashton-Tate (software), Nissan, etc. as a CIA focused on NON-compliance operational auditing. I mostly worked at firms that were industrial and profit motivated and mostly interested in operational improvements from internal audit. There were hardly any compliance standards then, and IIA was mostly focused on operational auditing. Now compliance work like SOX, COSO, etc. has overwhelmed them. Nothing beats finding a million dollar savings over spending 3-weeks to verify compliance of an obtuse regulation.

I recently had my team being internally audited. We have an internal audit team - CCG (Core Compliance group) who do soft audit to ensure that all of the documentations are available per the compliance requirement. Thanks Sonia

Certified Internal Auditor - CIA - at TheIIA.org To verify "compliance", you are checking how processes match requirements in some specified standard, like AICPA, IIA, COSO, or more narrow ones specified for industries. So, know which standard, then look up if they have a certification for compliance specialists. However, the CIA does some compliance, but also non-compliance issues like corporate troubleshooting, operational auditing, etc. (I was one).
