We've been fortunate enough to stay and eat in the Irma Hotel in Cody WY. The dining room and Bar have not changed much in 110 years. I recommend the prime rib.

I'm always interested to find old menus. It's always interesting to see what people were eating "back in the day" as well as prices for different items. What sometimes is considered an expensive special item now may have been a commonplace thing back then. Venison is one thing that jumps to mind at the moment. Sort of special now, common back then. Oh well great video of course. Take it easy. *:-)*

The pricing too - 3 course meal for $0.75. Lobster being "poor mans" food on the East Coast. Oysters/mussels being cheap - how things have changed.

Santee, there was a chain of railroad restaurants at the time, the Harvey Houses, that employed young, single women and provided good food in fairly elegant surroundings.
The young ladies (called "Harvey girls") were of good character and often met their future husbands among the repeat customers of the railroads. These restaurants began in Kansas in 1876 and lasted until 1968, nearly a hundred years later.
There is, in fact, an operational Harvey House restaurant in the Grand Canyon Lodge of the Grand Canyon National Park in your home state. If you're ever in the area, you might want to check it out. :)

The Harvey Houses had a real advantage in that they were located at railroad depots, and could get staples and fresh foods right off a train, so the food was very good for the time.

I've eaten there a few times when it was "Nellie Cashman's". The food was great, and they say it's haunted. Now it is a Mexican restaurant, I believe. Man, it was one of the best pancakes I ever ate. I remember I was eating it so fast, some fell on my 1880's repro tie and left a butter stain. Damn.

Mark Twain in Roughing It had a great quote about the food served to passengers at Stagecoach stops.
In addition to cramped space, there were accidents and an occasional robbery or attack by Indians. And then there was the food, when it was available. According to Mark Twain, a meal consisted of “last week’s bread…condemned army bacon…a beverage which pretended to be tea, but there was too much dish-rag, and sand, and old bacon-rind in it to deceive the intelligent traveler.” And to rub salt in the wound, meals were not included in the $200 a traveler paid for passage.

Interesting slice of western history! I remember watching the movie, "The Harvey Girls" with Judy Garland playing a girl from the East who went West to work at one of the famous Fred Harvey Houses in Sandrock, Arizona. Harvey Houses were one of the first chain restaurants in America. Also in the movie, Murder She Wrote's Angela Lansbury played Judy's saloon girl rival Em! I always thought it was interesting how a big juicy T-bone steak was common with fried eggs for breakfast back in those good old days! Definitely not like today's fast food! Thanks for posting! Good one Santee! Food business family here. Tough way to make a living.
Many stories of so called restaurants reusing food customers left on plate.
I've always thought winter would have been the best time to eat in an old restaurant. Meat easily kept cold. Mexican people most likely had the inside track on safe food in hot climates. Dried everything was de rigueur.

Heh, a McDonald's at Bodie. I went to the Calico House Restaurant early this year. Must've been in the middle of the food shipment because nearly everything was sold out. I've ate at a good number of old restaurants along California State Route 49. Most of them are pretty good, some of them with food you wouldn't expect in that area. Almost if they kept the menus up to a extent. Especially the French influence. One of the more memorable dinners I've had was at the Idaho Hotel in Silver City Idaho back in the late 90s.

Hey a good idea. Do a video on quirts and whips.😉

How did life in the 19th Century differ in Canada as opposed to the U.S.? (Or Alaska)

    • @ArizonaGhostriders
      @ArizonaGhostriders  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it was very similar. However, there was foreign rule in Canada...so the laws may have been pretty different.

@@ArizonaGhostriders That's one reason I was curious. That and how they dealt with the weather and the massive amounts of snow. I've seen some of Frontier on Netflix, so I know it wasn't to different. I wonder how much influence France had on the common settler.
Edit: I used to live in Alaska as a child and I just miss it up there to be honest. I didn't have a huge opportunity to go around and learn about this stuff, and it wasnt that big of an interest back then. Oh Well.

I remember going to a restaurant that was built since 1887 and still active till this day in southern Texas they had alot of meals that were mostly deer meat, bison meat and so much more the food was great and everything but it can take a huge chunk out of my wallet because of how the service was made. I liked it but it's better to have a wife to cook for you.

Santee and Rex - Los Diablos Mortal - after Santee's wife sees the mess they've made around the house! Actually nice poster painting. Hint, Hint - I'd buy one to hang in my classroom. I've got a board with pictures of Clayton Moore, Geronimo, Terrance Hill, Woody Strode, a Marine recruiting post featuring a female Marine Sgt. friend of mine and good ole Batjac J.W. with a Model 29. Los Diablos Mortal would look good next to it.

The Chinese restaurants had an advantage in that much of the food was made using boiling water, which tended to get rid of pathogens that other places didn't.
Also why the Chinese working on the railroads weren't sick as often as other ethnic groups working the same railroads; the Chinese boiled the local water for tea, while everyone else just drank the water as it was.
