    I like that you bring up "do you like it?" "Do you wear it?", there is a value to that! My mother has several diamond rings that were handed down to her from my grandmother. One of them is probably worth a lot more than the other, but I really love the one that is worth less. I find it beautiful and I would wear it all the time. To me the one that has less monitary value actually is the more valuable of the two and the one it would make more sense for me to inherit.

      I had to sell many of my estate pieces 10 years ago when hard times hit and I was desperate for ready cash. These were quality items, and it broke my heart to find that the most value is in precious metals, NOT diamonds, unless they are a sizeable stone or fine quality. I had some nice diamonds too, they were not chips or substandard, I had paid thousands for them but received only a fraction of what I had paid second hand!
      But because gold value had gone up since I purchased the pieces I did very well on my heavy precious metals jewellery. I weighed everything before I sold it, so that I at least knew the basic scrap value at current prices.
      Sadly I had to sell most pieces to a jeweller for a quick sale, that's where I lost most money (and he was the fairest jeweller I found to sell to - some of them were real rip-off merchants). I did better when selling my jewellery at auction, because my items were big, bold, quirky pieces (eg a huge 18k link bracelet from the 1940s that weighed around 80 grams), and they attracted bidding wars from ladies like me who enjoy show stopping bling.
      I don't recommend selling your jewellery unless you are desperate, as I was at the time. There are few more soul destroying experiences than accepting peanuts for a beautiful diamond pendant, then walking past that jeweller's window next day and seeing it polished up and offered for sale for 6 times what they paid you for it! I always advise people to hang onto their treasures if they can because they are guaranteed to increase in value over time. Gold is a sound investment in my experience, and people will always want to own beautiful things. In my view the only down side to owning jewellery is the fear of being burgled. I never insured my jewellery collection because having collected so much over years, I simply couldn't afford the premiums! So I was very creative with hiding places for it.

      This happened to my sister. Her engagement ring had a 4 ct burmese ruby in it worth $4000. She took it to a now defunct chain jewelry store and they switched the ruby out on her. She knew immediately as the stone had a very specific inclusion that she knew was there because she owned a jewelers loupe. She told the store she would be contacting a lawyer if she didn't get her specific ruby back. Took them more than a month, but she did finally get it back.

    It's amazing what there is in Canada too! Have found many treasures here where thrift shops did not know what they were. Best example, Dinh Van by cartier vintage 70s 18k gold necklace and pendant found in a 5 dollars in a mix up of random jewellery in a bag. Also nice Georg Jensen sterling brooches etc etc etc! Small samples of the treasures found! If you know what to look for you can do well!

      You're right, people are much more clued up about vintage jewellery (and antiques generally) than they ever were, thanks to TV shows like 'The Antiques Roadshow' and I have to say, lovely media experts like Dr Lori! Ebay too has swallowed up many of the bargains that once would have lurked in thrift stores. Yeah, greedy flippers are pricing out the people who actually need thrift items. Now, if you find something nice, it is either outrageously priced or a broken pos. Especially SA and GW.... They're the greediest of all considering they are GIVEN the items. There absolutely should be a legal percentage cap that non-profits can charge for items they are GIVEN, so that it is fair for everyone.

    If coral is damaged or has a defect can it be repaired? Or would it need to be replaced? If so, how much would this impact the value of the piece (in this case a Victorian era ring)?

    • @DrLoriV
      @DrLoriV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! Any natural material, like coral, if damaged or replaced will impact the value of the piece. If the coral in a Victorian ring, circa 1837-1901, is replaced with a new piece of coral then the value would be reduced significantly. I can look at your ring to identify and value it if you like.

    Hello again! Been binge watching your videos on you tube. The 3 things that hold value you said were art, jewelry and furniture. Well I just came into possession of a ring. I bought a ring and wedding band for $500. The card from IGI says estimated for just the engagement ring retail is $4,265. I went to a local jewelry store and a wedding band similiar to one I have goes for $600-800 retail new.
    So the million dollar question I have is do you have any idea how I sell this ring for the most money? Jewelers are not interested at all in a used ring. The guy I purchased from said retail jewelers would only give him $400(ring is 14k white gold, so is band with half diamonds). I have tried eBay but only get offers for $825...so where do I sell for a thousand?(can I get 2 thousand?) Thanks.
