Wilf Carter, originally from Nova Scotia, worked as a cowboy in western Canada, then sang under the name Montana Slim. He was living in Scottsdale, Arizona when he died.
As a musician from Kalispell, MT.. I feel like I dropped the ball on my local folk history here! Go, Wild Carter! I hope we can ride the same North Rocky Mountain range in heaven together one day!
My mom was a big fan of wilf Carter. We went to see him when he came to Bashaw Alberta Canada where my mom was born and raised. He autographed the lp cover of his vinyl that we had. It was a big highlight of my youth.
And just imagine, he hailed from nova Scotia Canada, just like hank snow, the singing ranger and me. BTW, I grew up listening to these country greats. Check out Little jimmy dickens tracks. Take an old cold tater (and wait) , sleeping at the foot of the bed, and Out Behind The Barn if you fancy a grin.
His singing is so great because you can understand every word. A real trear!

Fascinating-as a U. S. citizen with Canadian relatives,his life story is intriguing.

I met Wilf Carter at the Calgary StampStampede in 1971, a true Canadian legend and gentleman! I bought his 8 track cassette!
The Calgary Stampede was the biggest deal in the known world to me as a little kid!

Thanks for this post. I'd never heard Wilf sing before. He was very good and had his own way with a song. Very clear rendition.
My folks loved Wilf Carter. This brings back memories!
