Series 2's CGI Daleks had problems

  • While the Dalek CGI used for Series 1, Series 3 and Series 4 was all excellent, Series 2's depiction of a CGI Dalek Sec has several distinct errors that make it stand out from the rest. To make matters worse, it isn't the only issue involving CGI Daleks in Doomsday...
    All footage and music is the property of the BBC

    i think they were trying to make a convincing reflection of the daylight on the hemispheres and it got mis translated

      There are trailer shots and posters of Sec with the grey bumps though, so I think it was just a production change that didn’t make it to the cgi team.

    Not the first CGI glitch in Doomsday either. In the scene where the Cybermen and Daleks are battling out just fire Sec and The Genesis Ark, some of the Cybermen just fall over in really stable ways, like they get crushed by something invisible

      In the hangar battle between the Cult and the Cyber-Torchwood-Preacher alliance, a Cyberman on the far left of the screen is like bent down slightly for some reason? And when he fires, the laser comes out of his knee

    Ever since i was kid when i first watched Doomsday i was always so confused why Dalek Sec turned light black and silver in the sky.

    First dalek episode I ever saw, dad was watching it with me as he was getting use to new who being more of a classic fan. Has nothing but high praise for the effects on the Dalek design compared to the episides he saw. So I can't help but not be upset over the little errors.

    I thought it was due to different lighting with it being outside. The plunger, never noticed it. Not really an issue. Compared to the FLUX daleks with their terrible plastic texture and rotating neck bins, secs a masterpiece!

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah I assume they were trying to depict the sky reflecting off Sec but the end result doesn't come across very well
      Tbh, the flux daleks and CGI Sec have the exact same issue - rendering reflections is difficult. It took Pixar over a decade and at least 7 movies before they perfected the technology, what chance does BBC CGI have?
      Personally though I think the flux daleks look marginally better than CGI Sec. But only marginally - on the whole CGI daleks look better rendered against space/night sky than in daylight. Hopefully with the injection of disney dollars that the new era is getting, the CGI Daleks will look a lot better, daytime or otherwise

    I think all these things - which I never noticed, so well done! - were eclipsed by the show's decision to go for SDTV when the era of HDTV was already underway for 10 years. You can only spend so long watching a show in 576pSF - and badly "graded" from 576i - before you can't keep an eagle eye on anything anymore. The whole thing was a blurry mess from 2005 to 2008, and the saddest part was that the equipment to do better was attainable and everywhere. They really knew they had to transition anyway, and after The Next Doctor they were forced to upgrade.
    I did notice on first viewing how the Dalek's plunger and weapon were pointed downward, and liked it. But never saw the rendering issue, or subconsciously ignored it.

    The idea that the Time Lords who had legalised defensive homicide to dematerialise The Doctor in _Arc of Infinity_ but couldn't impose even a casing deactivation policy on captured Daleks was a bigger issue than the special effects affairs in my reckoning.

    Nitpicks for sure. I mean CGI Daleks aren't going to be perfect ever, idk why they have these little changes but it's Almost to be expect. The only time it bothered me was Magician's Apprentice because that's a Dalek that could've easy been a physical prop

  • @BenJewer
    @BenJewer ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think there are two different models used for the Daleks in Series 1-4, one low detail for scenes involving lots of Daleks that is proportionally a bit less accurate, and a higher detail one for close-ups. The low detail model for Sec (seen in the wide shot next to the Genesis Ark) actually has a mostly correct colour scheme, with dark black hemis and a matte black/grey skirt. The close-up model is incorrect, and my guess is that it's actually using the same textures as the bronze Daleks, just desaturated. Probably a cost-saving measure to avoid having to completely retexture both models.
    Just my guess and would love to know the story here!

    The cgi models from the first few series remind me of the Character Options toy with the incorrect proportions from the same time. My theory is that the toy was made based on the cgi render instead of the prop, probably for convenience.

  • @ekij133
    @ekij133 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think Dalek Sec, being black on black, the details would be lost if rendered 'properly' in daylight. Thus they needed to add the grey to make them visible.

  • @bohdan_lvov
    @bohdan_lvov ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's becasue back in the day all of the CGI were done by two guys and they did their best

  • @10thdoctor15
    @10thdoctor15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The base of the prop doesn't look that black compared to the other three, and the bumps (being round) reflect light differently when Sec is in the sky, so I never thought it looked wrong.

  • @tidmouthmilk12

    I'd always noticed that the first dalek in the Ark had it's gun and manipulator arm pointed down but never that the latter clipped through the gunbox, and now I can't unsee that. Thanks! xD
    Other than the clipping I never considered that an error though. I just thought that the dalek was in a powered down state until the Ark opened.

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair to the CGI team, it is definitely a nitpick - after all, the Ark was quite complex to render, and they'd already allocated time and money for lots of other CGI stuff that season - The Beast, the krillitanes, the werewolf etc. But one has to wonder why they didn't just position the Dalek a bit further back so it didn't have to break the laws of physics in order to fit inside. After all the ark is bigger on the inside, could they not have spared a couple of inches?

      @dalekbumps  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's one of those things where even as a kid I was like 'that's a mistake', I knew the colour scheme was off and the fact that it changes between shots is a giveaway that it's probably just a rendering error

  • @TheWhovinerd-1963
    @TheWhovinerd-1963 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To be honest the CGI model of Sec looks better IMO because, it gives him a sort of gun metal grey effect on the hemispheres, which I personally think is better. In some camera shots of the prop you can see the light reflecting off his casing as Grey. The CGI of Sec and the Genesis arc flying up as it opens is terrible though and really hasn’t aged well at all. However as new Doctor who was still in it’s early stages not all the CGI was great.
    Overall great story, just needed more scenes between daleks and Cybermen. Xx

    on the one hand, it serves a purpose and works well even with the errors
    on the other, litterally all pre series 3 dalek CGI was ropey AF, so is it a case of i know but let the story talk or am i too used to it being ropey i can live with it? i honestly don't know this answer, but at least it was better than that one scene in flux, god that dalek animation was awful, at least pre s3 look like it could fit in to the footage while being ropey
