I agree with you 110%. Hair is just hair. That's all it is at the end of the day. I also get mad when people say that there is a black and white way of speaking. What are your thoughts on white people "talking black" and black people "talking white".

    I always find it annoying when people say that dreads don't look good on people with straight hair, by implication they mean 'white people'. My skin is white, I am of European(as far as I am aware) descent, I have never had straight hair. My hair has always been a frizzy curl, and often very difficult to brush and impossible to get it to stay that way. I have dreads because I was sick of that crap, and didn't like having short hair. Personally I think that to say that only 'black people' can have dreads and that 'white people' can't have them, is to perpetuate the same racist dichotomy that tears lives apart.

    The first depiction of dreadlocks comes from Ancient Greece. People forget that in ancient times white people didn't have shampoo and oil build up would make their hair stick together especially if they were long. The Spartans hoplites wore formal locks as part of their battle dress, while Spartan magistrates known as Ephors also wore their hair braided in long locks. Even James the Just had dreadlocks all the way to his knees. Proto- Christians in Greece also wore dreadlocks as part of the Christian culture.
    Even in the bible it says:
    "All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow." - Numbers 6:5
    The creation of dreadlocks in African doesn't have any ancient roots, in fact it is pretty new custom, no less than 17th century A.D. The only ancient record of locks in Africa is natural locks.
    So I don't get why Black people have any say on white people wearing dreads, it just doesn't make sense.

      Early Christians have worn dreadlocks (lock or dread); there are descriptions of James the Just, first Bishop of Jerusalem, who is said to have worn them to his ankles; in the early 1st century Greece it was a Christian custom for many. - Glazier, Stephen D., Encyclopedia of African and African-American Religions, Taylor & Francis, 2001,

      The Spartans did have slaves, they were called the Helots from Laconia and Messenia, this was after the Spartans conquered their lands, they were a cross between free men and slaves, they were paid wages but they were not allowed to own any property or leave Sparta, they were also white not black.
      Other parts of Greece had other types of slaves. The condition of slaves varied very much according to their status; the mine slaves and the pornai (brothel prostitutes) lived a particularly brutal existence, while public slaves, craftsmen, tradesmen and bankers enjoyed relative independence. There was no slave trade at the time so all slaves came from local conquests, so most slaves were in fact Greek.
      Black African slaves came to Greece much later when the Romans conquered Greece.
      Also:
      Shiva and his followers wore dreadlocks. According to Roman accounts, the Celts were described to have 'hair like snakes' Germanic tribes, Greeks and the Vikings are all said to have worn dreadlocks too and Yogis, Gyanis, and Tapasvis of all sects are the most famous bearers of Dreadlocks. I guess they had black slaves too..
      The notion of black Africans being in contact with the Greek states and even some nut jobs claiming the original Greeks were blacks

We need to shape the fuck up and show each other some respect. Everyone. Stop separating, when this generation needs to be closer and on the same page, now more than ever. These are fucked up times and its no time to start blaming each other when we could be getting along. Equality. Theres only 1. the peaceful (us who agree that women/men: gay or queer, people of all races, beliefs, economic classes and identities, are INFACT EQUAL) and 2. the unpeacful: (those still blame EACH OTHER because why?) Yes these are fucked up times, but why are we blaming any skin colour, when the real problem is the law enforcement, government, social media!

    it's a hairstyle. If people are getting butt hurt over a hairstyle- simply a number of hair follicles placed in a certain matter - is childish and down right boring. There are much more important problems in our world than a hairstyle. Take a seat and re-evaluate your morals. Love your video👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

  • @bellahontas510
    @bellahontas510 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I love this video! I think it's so, SO important. Locks are not and have never been exclusive to one particular racial/cultural/religious group. Throughout history American Indigenous, Asian, Indian, Pacific Islanders, Middle Eastern, African, and YES even European people have locked their hair for a ton of different reasons. I'm full blooded Abegweit Mi'kmaq First Nation (aka Native American) and my people have been locking their hair farther back than oral history can say. But our tribe is a snow tribe, and we tend to be very light skinned and and often are mistaken for being Asian or Caucasian, and the amount of shit I've gotten for my locks is ridiculous. No one group has any sort of "claim" over dreadlocks. and to the POC's i see making the comments about thinking white people dont "deserve" dreads, you're only making yourself look ignorant.

    Hell yeah. Thanks for this. As a 'white girl' with dreads, it really sucks to read comments about how nasty our dreads are, and how we're posers and what not. I used twist and rip, no products, I wash my hair with baking soda once a week and let nature do the rest. My hair doesn't smell. It does, however, look a mess, but it's working itself out. And I don't care. I just want to take a minute to say that most of the hate I seem to get is from other white people who have seen 'salon' dreads and think mine are disgusting. Like, come on guys, we have the internet. Look up the history, figure it out. There should be no hate among or across races. It's your hair, do what you want.

      ***** Africans didn't have dreads they had a different method. 32shumble Also many other civilizations had dreads that are completely gone today that were proven before the Celts but that a whole nother discussion. No one owns a hairstyle. For America, people went back and forth and saw the hairstyle in Jamaica and applied the name dreads to negative and gave it to black people. In JA dreads are prideful and mean gifted and graced. Why can't we all just be cool with every race doing what they want? No one would ever want anyone to tell us what to do?

    • @daneilbaugh7303
      @daneilbaugh7303 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** Look it up... Celts and Africans and Europeans had a similar style. Even Indians had similar dreads. Dreads the word, the name of the style originated in Jamaica. No one knows who invented that particular style. Celt, Indians, Africans, everyone did it differently. But the method used the most today, was from a style coined in Jamaica. So please get your facts straight and research instead of trying (very poorly) to school others. Thanks, now *points* the door.

In America they us the dictionary definition of dreads. American saw this as terrible but in the J to the A its thought as being closer to God spiritually. But if you looked it up and see where it originated and how those people used it you would see you don't know anything. I feel good that I do. Now you may GFTOH :)

      +Kedah Miller (Sunshine) so, from what I kind of got out of your statement and belief that whites shouldn't wear dreads unless they understand the history and meaning... Or anyone of that matter.. Which I get because I get annoyed with people who bring up spiritual matters and clearly they don't know what they are talking about.. So then my question is: do you just judge those people because they are simply ignorant? I doubt it's meant to offend anyone if whites or anyone else wears them... They just either enjoy the look... I don't think it's wrong for people to like the look either, it's beautiful in its own way. I personally like the look but I would rather explore the many opinions of people out there about this style bias, that way I don't offend anyone, being white and all that. (Because everyone knows people of my color are heartless jerks because of other people's mistakes. Must be in the genetics! ~ eye roll~) Just because I do care about people's fragile feelings and whatnot.

    Its sad to see all ethnicity's bashing each other in the comments. Everyone needs to realize that we are all one and should not separate ourselves by what our skin color is, our type of hair, or where we were born. Instead lets think about how everyone's first ancestors were originally black from east Africa. That meaning we all came from the same skin color. We are all brothers and sisters.

    Truly a breath of fresh air to watch this video. When I read the title, this was not what I was expecting at all. I had locks for a while. It was a liberating experience to detach yourself from caring about your hair constantly. Just one less materialistic concern that allowed me to enjoy other things more. But, there is a lot of controversy surrounding dreadlocks. You're right @nappy headed black girl , many people do not do proper research on the topic. And I think many white people who decide to lock their hair were inspired by the beauty of the locs on a black person, so it's interesting that some people think how they do. Food for thought, for sure!!

    thank you! I really love that you are so open minded and lovely! I personally don't call my locks dreadlocks because I understand when african americans are offended with white people having "dreadlocks". If you look back in history it was about fighting against the white society and because many whites back then thought they were nasty they called them DREADlocks and they were kind of proud that they were fighting against this and the name is/was for the brave blacks who were fighting against the opression of the whites (sorry if I got anything wrong or if I didn't explained everything right). For me I call my locks fairy/elf locks because of the celtic story: "When young children, especially girls, wake from an evening’s slumber with tangles and snarls in their hair, mothers with a tradition of fairy folklore might whisper to their daughters that they had caught fairy locks or elf-locks" and you get bad luck if you brush them out. I think it's very lovely and so I call mine that way. sorry for all of the mistakes I made english isn't my mother tounge. have a nice day :)

Most people just don't understand that dreads on white people also come naturally over time. I mean if I don't comb my hair for a while you see little baby dreads pop out anyway! I am a caucasian woman with dreadlocks, and I got mine on a very personal journey while I was spending some time healing from a bad trauma with the Great Mother on a vision quest (fasting in the wilderness). My dreadlocks came to be from an understanding that they are the roots that join my inner body, all of my experiences, and my mind to the ground, and they are here to keep me grounded and remind me of that. I wasn't actually thinking about black, white or any of that. To me we are all one and a hair style does not belong to a certain culture. I travel to India a lot to teach Yoga, and I see hindu's in the Himalayas with dreadlocks to the ground, and thousand year old sculptures of Krishna and Lakshmi who have dreadlocks. I wish this was not even a question in modern day - I think we have real problems to tend to as humans. Bless.

The snake haired people had many tiny braids or dreads. Dreads & other hair styles came a long way. For some it was a way of life... honor to have long hair. Some Native women use to cut their hair when grieving for their loved ones. To let others know, if they must. I am Native-Italian. I get picked on left & right. I get called Sqwa, savage, Crazy Indian, etc: ... & Now, now i have my hair in the Marley Twist. I love them. People ask me do i just stop washing my hair. Um No... of course i wash my f**king hair. waveycarter stealing our culture...? Anyone who lives in the US is so culturally diverse that this sort of racism shouldn't exist anymore...is the internet a part of YOUR culture? Are your clothes a part of YOUR culture? It's quite hypocritical to have such a strong racist opinion when you "steal" just as much culture as anyone else. It's called unity - One Love. We are all brothers and sisters. The more we set ourselves apart, the more we hate and the more we hate the more we set "our" cultures back hundreds of years. Light up the darkness brother.

    • @NoriDavis
      @NoriDavis 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      waveycarter I'd also like to add that two of my greatest influences in how I perceive the world and just basic simple life philosophy are Martin Luther King and Bob Marley. If ALL of us of ALL races learned how to love and think like those two men, this would truly be a better place. If we all learned to see with eyes of unity rather than division we would better both ourselves and others. "The richer we have become materially, the poorer we become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly in the air like birds and swim in the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers." Martin Luther King.

    • @NoriDavis
      @NoriDavis 11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      waveycarter There is perception and then there is reality. A perception is not reality. Which is why it is called a perception. Your perception is that all white people are bad and are racists and that is not true. My girlfriend is Mexican and I have both Latinos AND African Americans in my family. I, personally transcend race brother. I'm trying to find unity with you. You are using hateful and racist words whilst calling me hateful and racist. Racism comes from ignorance. Rise above it man. If your perception is that white people are racist and hateful.....why then lower yourself to that standard!?!?!? It is senseless and without reason. I never said white people started dreads. Neither did the last guy. To be honest I really don't know where that part of your comment even came from. But my point is that it doesn't matter. It would make just as much sense for me to say that it is "stealing" from the Latino culture if you've ever eaten Mexican food. That's an extremely ignorant accusation for me to make. It's an extremely beautiful thing to embrace other cultures and accept them and build them up rather than set them back or tear them down. So yes, I will tell that "Martin Luther shit" to YOU. Not blacks. You are your own person and accountable for yourself, not your race. I actually have several black friends that would tell you the same thing. Hate comes from individuals, not races. You and I are perfect examples. I was taught to judge no one and love everyone. Especially those who hate or judge me. So in essence, you hate me for no reason blindly because of the color of my skin and I love you for no reason blindly because you are a human being just like me. We have outward characteristics unique from one another, but that is it. We are both people and both worthy of love and respect. Neither of us being less important than the other. There is nothing that you can say to me for me to change my perception. You can hate me all you want to, but I will always choose willingly and gladly to love you anyway. Your perception is hindering you from experiencing many beautiful things in the short life you are allowed to live by the God who gave it to you. But that is your choice to waste your precious life hating everyone. Rise above. Light up the darkness.

    • @NoriDavis
      @NoriDavis 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's another matter of perception vs reality. Yes, there are a lot of racist white people. But there are a lot of racist people period. And it's because of racist people there is still racism and hate and all of the like. Not because of racist white people. It would be no different to say its because of racist people with brown eyes. color of skin or any other attribute of a racist person is irrelevant. There is racism and hate because of racist people, not because of white people. There has been hate and racism and slavery way before white people were. The jews were slaves in Egypt for 400 years. It's all a matter of who we choose to be as individuals. Will we choose light or darkness? Good or evil? Love or hate?

      In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin color. It is also found in hair, the pigmented tissue underlying the iris of the eye, and the stria vascularis of the inner ear. In the brain, tissues with melanin include the medulla and pigment-bearing neurons within areas of the brainstem, such as the locus coeruleus and the substantia nigra. It also occurs in the zona reticularis of the adrenal gland.
      The melanin in the skin is produced by melanocytes, which are found in the basal layer of the epidermis. Although, in general, human beings possess a similar concentration of melanocytes in their skin, the melanocytes in some individuals and ethnic groups more frequently or less frequently express and humans have very little or no melanin synthesis in their bodies, a condition known as albinism.
      Because melanin is an aggregate of smaller component molecules, there are many different types of melanin with differing proportions and bonding patterns of these component molecules. Both pheomelanin and eumelanin are found in human skin and hair, but eumelanin is the most abundant melanin in humans, as well as the form most likely to be deficient in albinism.

    Thank you. I’m totally subbing to you. I finally got my locs about a week ago, honestly I think the fear of people being so hateful was one of the contributing factors in me waiting so long. I finally said, “ya know what, I don’t care, I want to do this and I’m gonna do it”. So I did and man, I’ve been so happy since. I believe dreads are beautiful on everyone. I LOVE seeing them, on all ethnicities honestly. You’re so right, I haven’t put in any products and have decided that I don’t want to use all that stuff, but no hate to anyone who does. Dreads are beautiful, to me it’s an almost spiritual thing, which is what makes them so beautiful. ❤️

    There is so much misinformation, so much ego, so much of that just floating about everywhere. Overstand this: WHITE and BLACK are not skin colours first of all. Your skin has a tone, and its neither white or black. So people innerstanding this should stop using such terms. Being a hostage of ones own rational thinking, is what brings people to do this, which is what? Its the need to define everything, put everything into categories. That is left brain thinking. You can force/train/program yourself to be FREE. You just have to want it, read about it, be it, give it importance.
    Now.. Ego. It causes a lot of problems, and it only exists to give you false hopes, to attach emotions unto something that doesnt exist. If everyone abolished ego (to a bare minimum, not completely) then obviously lots of problems would be solved. Thats what spirituality teaches (not only that), meditation (different types of meditation, to learn what it is).
    Locks for some people is more about the transcendence, like it is for me. You transcend other peoples opinions and you transcend your own ego. You feel freer by not caring about other peoples expectations (caring way less, actually, I know you overstand) and actually you learn that those expectations are not real. You create them in your head. You create paranoias and safe zones. Humans always resort to this bi-polar type of being. This false in-existing dualism that keeps people in trance, occupying themselves with what people think, and not realising you are not being what you want to be.
    I know you innerstand this. I-tinually.

    I saw some good commentary on another website that I thought was relevant to this type of cultural appropriation and need for confirmation by the people whose culture is being used:
    "one black person saying it’s okay doesn’t make wearing those dirty mops on your head and calling them dreads any less racist or appropriation.
    Here’s the thing. If you have to search the internet for one black person to make your thing okay when several thousand have told you it’s not you probably shouldn’t do that thing. That thing you are doing is probably racist." -dynastylnoire

      1) I'm not racist, I have white friends!
      2) Honestly, I wish I could go back to my native roots; apparently, the government officials of the African countries are going to push out white people and bar them from coming back in, and once that happens and the natives there can reestablish the really cool economy we once had, the African countries can go back to being the prosperous, wonderful countries it once was before white people showed up and fucked everything over, and I can be a part of that!

      There's nothing racist about a hairstyle suited for HUMANITY in general. Just because a bunch of black people get all offended because some whites have dreads doesn't mean its racist. It means they're not comfortable in their own skin. Black people straighten and relax their hair to make it seem "white". Who gives a shit? It's fucking hair. I came across this video while looking at timelines.. Its awesome. Very few people search for a black person to agree and to find validity in their hairstyle choices.. That's ridiculous. Racism is a joke. You need to let that go. I'm white and I have dreads. I love them. And if a black person gets offended.. Oh well.. They can stop being full of themselves. Cuz they don't matter when it comes to my hair. Lol. People that dub things as racist are the reason its even still around. Do your "race" a favor and stop focusing on it. Lol.

      Koley M I would spend an entire hour or two writing an article-length response to this to show just how wrong you are, but Ojiru's comment below mine sum it up best:
      "White people made fun of black Americans for so long, especially if they have dreads, calling them "dirty" and "ghetto", and I've known so many black Americans who have been ashamed of their hair and shaved it off because of white insults. and then white people have the audacity to just turn it around and make it a fad and tell PoC that we're overreacting when we tell them they're appropriating our culture.
      This is why we don't trust you"
      You guys literally cannot be trusted to do anything because you guys still fuck people of color over and somehow still kill us in order to live a happy life at the expense of ours.
      Plus, black people don't perm their hair to get it "white people straight" anymore; white people's hair break too much. Not only that, but many white people seem to think that leaving their hair to get dirty and matted and turn it into some sort of rat's nest is somehow comparable to the care and wonderful management black people's locs, and that's a gross, unhygienic insult.

      Ivoriania Phillips What I've always wondered is why White people think they have a monopoly on straight hair. That is the only thing going for them in these types of arguments. Then they want to try and get smart by making these erroneous comments about Black women trying to mimic the appearance of White hair, when I'm certain that Black women are not running to the beauty supply store to buy 100% Scandinavian limp cuticle Remy.

    Ojiru (and all people talking about cultural appropriation). I am a white woman with dreadlocks and guess what ? Two Zimbabwean guys made my dreadlocks, IN Africa ! I travelled for 2 months all around Southern Africa and nobody ever told me anything about appropriating their culture, not a single fucking time ! In fact, they were all happy to see me with dreadlocks and a lot of people came to talk to me and tell me they liked my dreads, they gave me tips about how to take care of them and washing them and everything, and walked with me to become friends. So I don't care were dreadlocks came from, if it's Africa or anywhere else, I love my hair, I love Africa and the fact that I'm white (I'm not american, i come from switzerland) doesn't mean I'm a racist bitch and the fact that my ancestors were stupid cunts doesn't mean I AM ! So because I am white and because my ancestors were assholes you have the right to insult ME ? I am fucking tired of people insulting white people because of our ancestors ! Insult our ancestors, insult us if we are assholes but what our ancestors did have NOTHING TO DO with what we think, who we are and how we act. I would love to apologize for what my ancestors did to yours BUT, I didn't do it, if I could I would tell them to go fuck themselves but I can't. I'm sorry about white privilege and I'm sorry that non white people have it harder to live in there, and I'm fighting against this every single day. I'm sorry for you but you are the ones dividing people and being fucking rude ! I know some people are still racist assholes but they are not all of us and being so rude like you are is exactly the same.We are one, we all come from earth and it really is time to stop hating each other and bitching about each other. I love people, no matter if they're african, asian, caucasian, indians, wearing dreadlocks, having no hair or whatever, and I'm not sorry for being white, I am who I am and my color does not define my way of thinking and my behavior.

    First off, I just wanna say thank you for this video, it's refreshing to hear anyone speak up with such positivity on how universal and neutral dreadlocks truly are. I've had these 'debates'' with people before, and actually opened some minds in the process (including my own family, lol). I've had mine for about 3 years now, but would have had them much longer had I not been resisting what my hair has been trying to do on it's own for many years now. I would literally rip out handfuls of hair in the back every morning trying to brush out the starter dreads that happened overnight, EVERY NIGHT. It was exhausting, and painful.....so I gave in. Threw away my brushes, combs, hairdryer, etc, and just kept my hair super clean, and let it go from there. I adore each one on my head, and honestly it's coincided with my spiritual journey as well, it seems the further I delve into getting to know my spiritual self, the more fun and crazy things my dreads do. So yeah, they're very personal to me, they grow and change as I do,and I love that! (P.S. they always smell good, zero product use, they're soft, no scalp issues, and no, I've never had lice either) It's different for everyone, and I totally respect that, many do it for cultural reasons, I respect that too, some for aesthetic reason, hey, that's cool too.....truth is, the origins of dreadlocks are hard to trace, different folks make different claims, but they have existed all over the world since there were people to inhabit it. People forget that the cavemen didn't have combs, brushes, shampoos, etc, I would think they'd be the 1st to have had them. The Egyptians, Hindu, Buddhists, Native tribes, Africans, Vikings, Greeks, Shamans, they were all said to have been of the first to have them, (or at least some of the first depictions of them) as was Solomon from the Hebrew bible with his 7 dreadlocks that held his power, he could only be killed when they were cut off of him. See, folks? UNIVERSAL. :) Drop the stereotypes, none of us can say the origins for sure because we weren't there, and in the end, we're still all made of the same energy, we cry, we get pissed, we love, we eat, we sleep, we reproduce, we bleed red, and we all die. Regardless of how our HAIR is worn.

    If I said it once, I've said it a million times, white individuals with locs doesn't upset me. Especially if they are honest, respectful down to earth humans who love planet Earth and humanity, and if they are the type who loves embracing different cultures all at the same time. I simply love that.
    What upsets me is when I see whites justify wearing locs by the denial that they have privilege. This is especially annoying when you are a black person being told you cannot wear your natural hair in a office setting because it is 'unprofessional'. It's especially annoying when you have just got through watching Dark Girls, and you've watch dark-skinned women and girls from every part of the globe literally hate themselves for being as dark as the night or think themselves worthy because they look close to the skin and hair texture of white individuals who dominate the television screen, and are society's standard of beautiful. Most TV and media caters to white people, more specifically upper middle class white people. Society's professional world, globally, caters to white people. A Harvard study recently came out showing that people with good resumes where denied jobs from nearly every career type (working of professional) simply because their name was black-sounding. Even white-sounding names that had worser resumes than the ones with black-sounding names, were favored overwhelmingly. Even from companies who were supposedly anti-racist.
    What also annoys me is when white people deny the fact that this culture started and came from Africa, and that if was black people who inspired the culture. A lot of them justify wearing locs by making up fictitious lies about how the Kelts and Vikings wore locs, when historically speaking, the Kelts and various other early Europeans were so obsessed with combing and washing their hair, they literally buried themselves with their combs. Or when they bring up rare examples of dreadlocks being practiced in remote rural Asian countries, and use the excuse "other cultures do it" -so it's ok to make a fashion statement about other sacred spiritual practices as long as they too far away to complain about it? I think that's very racist. Why is so 'hard' for a white person to admit that they like a culture that came from the black Rastafarian movement? Are we that beneath them?
    Look, rather you like it or not, your ancestors enslaved us, and to this very day your Eurocentric standards of beauty took over the world. You have privilege, some of you are still rich from the land and plantations you had, that my ancestors had to work on. If you're going to sample from other cultures at least be respectful and sensitive about it.

      If other blacks have given you grief about your hair, i apologize for their behalf. Your ancestors came from Africa, just as much as ours did.

      i would like to point out that there was a period of time when vikings did wear locks, it was until they started grooming and decided that it was the sign of ''superiority'' or being hgiher when they were well groomed.locks were worn on many spiritual healers in scandanavia as well. i come fron a line of them, my grandmothers had them as did my great grandmother. and id assume so on. But i do agree with the rest, everyoen can have preferences but calling someone ugly or treatign them any different just because of their skin is ridiculous and atrocious. some of the most beautiful women on earth have lucious dark skin. its a shame that people have discouraged some of them to the point of self hatred, they are beautiful just like everyone else. skin colour, hair texture, hair color, any of this should not define a person in any way shape or form. ive always been taught to do only what you love and to ignore what others have to say about it. its sad to see people people think they are above others for thier race, or to see them think so negativly about something that should only be taken with a grain of salt. its hair for goodness sakes.

      Why are there so many white people who put dreads in there hair and start smoking weed and listening reggae and get into the Rastafarian movement. What ever music they listen to I don't care they just need to know that dreadlocks are a ancient African hairstyle. I can remember in the 90s u wouldn't see a white person with corn rows but when Justin Timberlake had them I saw a lot of white wearing cornrows. I've heard other blacks say we can't have anything for ourselves our culture is being taken. But what I'm saying is that people should know the history of dreadlocks they were worn by ancient African warriors.

      Well then what your saying is that black people born in America should not have dreads either...after all they are American not African right ? Fried chicken is a southern specifically white southern dish. So why should black people be allowed to eat it ? white people taught them how to make it in the first place.America should be the center for sharing culture but it goes both ways, and im in school.

      bally turner that's pretty presumptuous. I didnt say any of that. not once did i mention anyone being able to or not being able to do anything. black culture is practically non-existent, since it was stripped from slaves a couple hundred years ago, and its a shame that the few things that we are able to associate with our culture are being taken away. not in that other races of people are wearing them. that is fairly trivial. but to deny that the origin of style lies in africa is the real problem.

    First video I've seen of yours and I have so much RESPECT for you! I'm one of the whitest people you'll ever meet and I recently started dreading my hair. I don't use any products in my hair to change the look of them at all. I backcombed my hair, then simply stopped brushing it, and started washing it every 3 days instead of every other day. and I'm pretty sick tired of all the hate I get for having them.

    I am Hispanic but I look white and I love dreads right now I'm wearing synthetic at least till my hair gets longer ( it's growing out of a pixie)
    But once it's at a decent length I plan to start real ones 🙂
    My neighbor who is black looks at me very weird though lol but her little girl who is my sons best friend likes my hair lol

    How cute. I like at the end when you said "Dreads are for everyone". Sounded like a commercial.♥ And another thing, you were right about the hair being clean no matter what style.

    I started my dread journey 9 yrs ago. And by that I mean my interest in dreads. Being a Gemini, I thought maybe it was a phase and it would blow over. 2 years ago I did about 9 baby dreads and was in a shitty relationship where the dreads were an issue, so I brushed them out. 2 days ago I began the process again. It's wonderful to see a positive, smiling, beautiful opinion about white people and dreads. During the process of the good, bad, and ugly in the beginning, we need all the positive, supportive vibes we can get!

    I am German and I do not feel attacked when every year thousands of tourists in Lederhosen come to the Oktoberfest. Germanic tribes already had dreadlocks centuries ago. In the Middle Ages, the "Weichselzopf" was common in Germany, Poland, Belgium and a few other countries, that was a dreadlock braid. It's so crazy to have to talk about such nonsense
