My autistic brother changed my life | Patricia Kayser | TEDxFIU

  • At a family function, Kayser discovered that playing the guitar made her autistic brother Christian social and interactive. She started the nonprofit Autism & Music, which helps enhance the quality of life of those with Autism through music interaction.
Originally from Guayaquil, the coast of Ecuador, Patricia Kayser moved to the United States in 2004 when her younger brother Christian was diagnosed with Autism. She always tried to find ways to communicate with Christian. At a family function, Kayser discovered that playing the guitar made Christian social and interactive. As a result, communication with her brother dramatically improved. Kayser realized that music was a great tool to communicate and socialize with people with special capabilities in general. In 2013, she started the nonprofit Autism & Music, which helps enhance the quality of life of those with Autism through music interaction. Kayser recently finished her last semester at FIU and will graduate with a degree in Liberal Arts Studies and a Certificate in Social Media and E- Marketing from FIU.

My name is Bill Angell, and at age 7, I was diagnosed with autism.
In the past 3 years, I found musical theatre.
It was beautiful, and I found my place.
As a freshman in high school, I can confirm the ideas in this story!

That was really heartwarming. I have autism, and to hear the things you would do to make sure I felt happy and protected... it means the world to me. Please keep on doing what you are, these are so many good things to me. This really helps me feel accepted.

That was so heartwarming. I play the piano in a music therapy room for adults with special needs -- some of them have autism. When these people start dancing and feeling the music I'm performing, it makes me emotional. It's such a sweet thing to be part of.

Thank you for sharing Patricia. Good luck on your new album; you are already a rock star. I am the father of an 11 year old son, Ethan, who has autism. His older brother Seth was in the spectrum as well. Ethan and Seth never met each other. Seth died 18 months before Ethan was born.I commend you on what you are doing with music and autism. I enjoyed your music. "People with autism don't live in their own world, they live in ours." That is so profound. I wish you all the best.

+Scott Bunkelmann Hello Scott! Thank you for taking the time to write and share your story. You must be a very special father because these angels are only sent to special families, those who have the sensibility to understand the real meaning of being alive. Living doesn't automatically mean that you are alive. Being alive takes more than that. Being alive means to understand and to be grateful for the little things. Those things that are around us that many take for granted. These angels teach us that, to appreciate all and every little thing. Best of luck to you and Ethan! Be on the look, you can learn something from him every single day. Cheers!

+Patricia Kayser Official Very well stated, Patricia. Christian is so fortunate to have you for a sister. Your family is indeed very special.
Keep spreading the word of inclusion and acceptance. And keep us posted on the progress of your album.
My family is also in south Florida, in the northern part of Palm Beach County. For the past 24+ years I have been working as a commercial TV producer for WPBF TV 25, the ABC affiliated TV station in this market. After the first of the year I will be leaving the company. Unfortunately one of the reasons I am leaving is because the corporation that owns the TV station wanted to eliminate my position due to budget restructuring. My boss and the General Manager worked hard to find me another position at the TV station, but I have decided to go my own way and create a company that will eventually employ people with autism. Those of us who have family members in the spectrum know how difficult this world can be for them to thrive. I think I can create some opportunities in the field of video and media production where people in the spectrum can have meaningful careers. The name of my company is Lights Camera Autism. So far I have one project scheduled for January. It is a very small production, but it is a start.
And yes, I learn something from Ethan every day. I learned many things from Seth as well.
      All my best and peace,
      Scott Bunkelmann

I am so thankful my brother has autism. When he was little he had a lot of times where I felt like I was going to die. He kicked me and punched me then the police had to come. One of them started talking to me saying it was going to be ok. But it wasn't he had to go somewhere for a month to give me and my family a break. I was crying the whole time and I had no one to talk to. I was 5 back then but now I can get though things other people can't. Now I am older and he is getting better. At school people are making fun of me sometimes of things like my brother. I had a hard life back then but I know God was with me the whole time.

Yeah I listen to music a lot, I even play instruments myself and it makes me much calmer, I don't know if I am on the spectrum, but something about me wasn't right, I fidget with my fingers, or (stim) whatever that is, I copy off of things sometimes and I love listening to music mostly, and I get really stressed easily and really upset easily, and lastly I instead of using teddy bears as my comfort toy, I like talking to my friends as if they were my teddy bears of comfort, I've been in special ed for most of my life, because of my blindness and my learning disability mostly, and when I heard about band, I thought to myself? Hey! I want to be in band, ya know just like everyone else I don't care if I'm different, so they put me in there and now I'm in my second year in intermediate, as a freshman I love music so much! ❤

Many from Back up through Mahler and beyond made a difference in my life. But some of commercial entertainment pop music I cannot tolerate or tune out and unwanted music is used to bully autistic people who can't conform. Please be careful not to abuse us with music we don't want. Let us decide what kind of culture we want to live in.
