I know what Ian goes through here. I went down with my mc three weeks ago and I'm still in the hospital here in Sweden. I broke my nose, cracked four ribs, broke my lower right arm. But my leg was worst. I had my right knee completely crushed and broke my femur in three places. At first I had too much adrenaline to feel any pain, but once it started go down, man the pain... The ambulance staff were nice enough to give me many ml of morphine and fentanyl, but it was not enough so they anesthetized me on the spot to put me away from my misery. It's been three weeks of hell with 7 operations in less then 10 days, but hopefully I'll get to come home this upcoming week. Stay safe on the road everyone!

Turned out my left thumb was broken aswell so I had surgery for that a couple of weeks ago. When you are broken in so many places It’s hard to know exactly where you feel pain since you are on to some pretty heavy medication. My tip for anyone who get badly injured is to be very careful with the pain medicine you get prescripted. When I was trying to quit after 2 months it was very hard because your body has become physcially addicted. Respect the medicine and never use it unless you really have to take it, because otherwise you’re already complicated life will have another problem you have to deal with. I’m doing alot better but I still have alot of problems walking in stairs and such and my knees probably never fully recover from being crushed. They hurt bad everyday but you sort of manage to stop thinking about it, just accepting what it is. Anyways, this wont stop me from getting back on a bike, riding is the best thing I know in life so as soon as I’m as best recovered as it get, I’ll be back on it! :)

@@madhatterbecky An open fracture means that the broken bit of bone has penetrated the skin, so it has to be broken pretty badly for it to cut through the skin, and in some cases though not that I saw here, can still be sticking out. He also had multiple open fractures, so the bone cut through the skin in several places on each leg. So his legs were BADLY broken. As an EMT I can tell you it's 'fun' stuff. If there's problems with pulse, like in this case, you have to pull the bone back in and hope that helps get blood flow restored beneath the injury.
Wow fair play to nurses amazing job to fix broken people is just out of this world I lost a leg in a miss hap few years ago and if wasn't for the help I received so rapidly I wouldn't be writing this🤛
@@harrh4528 He could have been to the hospital if they had just put him in th ambulance. A lot of these helicopter transports are unnecessary and wastefully expensive. A doctor is better used in the ER where he can see dozens of patients per day instead of sitting twiddling his thumbs in the ready room.
You cleary have know clue just how many lives are save by the air ambulance teams. And the carry blood on board now, and the doctors volunteer for free to do the air ambulance work. And there life saving skills save lifes, so there better off out there treating people that are really hurt, unlike seeing 20 to 40 people that cleary should have not been in A&E in the 1st place. And also going by air the person can be flown too the hospital with specialist care, like a burns unit. And the air ambulance is funded by the public, so there not wasting any NHS money. You would not be moaning if your life was saved by the air ambulance teams now would you?
I don't understand that. I know that the helicopter cannot just land everywhere but at least let a police car come and pick them up or something. That's what they do in my country.

As diabetic myself this was close to home to watch. For me this is the main reason I stopped my driving lessons for the foreseeable future. I have hypo-unawareness (cannot feel if I'm high or low or normal, also don't feel the changes) and that's very dangerous on the road obv. And normally if your sugars are managed good it doesn't have to be a handicap but sadly due to things out of my control the past few, and the next few years, it will be for me. Hope that despite losin a limp the man is doin okay now! ❤
Ian Dawson had just come off Junction 5 of the M18 on his way home from his job as a postman in Brigg when very low blood sugar levels caused a ‘hypo’ attack. The Type 1 diabetic was catapulted 30 metres through the air, smashed his legs into a road sign before landing on the other side of the motorway junction roundabout barrier. “My sugar levels must have plummeted on the ride home but I was concentrating so much I didn’t realise it was affecting me until I heard a loud bang, which was me hitting the sign, and I remember lying on the ground and pretty much accepting death,” said 51-year-old Ian. “My legs were just in a knot but there was an angel on my shoulder that day who literally saved my life.” That ‘angel’ was off-duty District Nurse Sister Kathryn Bebb who pulled over to help. “I just grabbed my nursing bag from the boot of the car and followed this girl over the barrier to where Ian was on the ground,” said 30-year-old Kathryn from Cusworth. “When I got there his legs were really badly smashed. I got a couple of lads to call the ambulance and these other two girls helped me as I cut his trousers off. “He was bleeding quite heavily out of one of his legs where his artery had been severed so I tourniqueted his leg and we applied compression and just kept talking to Ian. He said he was a diabetic and needed some sugar so someone got a can of coke from their car which helped.” Kathryn, who works for Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), added: “His injuries were very gruesome with a lot of bones protruding but these girls, and everyone who stopped to help, were amazing and it just goes to show what people can do.” Ian was airlifted to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, by Yorkshire Air Ambulance but doctors were unfortunately unable to save his shattered left leg which was amputated below the knee. Same with us paramedics, always head on a swivel, eying up people's veins for IV insertion points, and always carrying our obs kit about!
I love watching Brittish emergency shows. They're all super nice to each other. I've seen others where they all introduce kindly like they're about to have tea. I love the fact that they use sedatives on patients which you don't really see here. In the US you just suffer your ass to the ER.

I've watched waaay more American emergency shows than British, and I've NEVER seen American first responders administer ketamine or any other sedative people just scream and moan their way to the hospital

By the time we’ll have flying cars, there will be roads that we can automatically set our path and the car will drive for us no doubt. blubb blubb for your second question, the police eventually closed the road to allow the helicopter to land. The reason why it wasn’t instant is because a sudden road closure may cause crashes as it wouldn’t give the drivers enough warning to slow down. The police have to get the motorway control to create a detour and put slow down warning signs.

I can feel his pain. Last 2016, I broke my 2 legs from motorcycle accident. That was the worst experience i ever had.

Ian Dawson had just come off Junction 5 of the M18 on his way home from his job as a postman in Brigg when very low blood sugar levels caused a ‘hypo’ attack.
The Type 1 diabetic was catapulted 30 metres through the air, smashed his legs into a road sign before landing on the other side of the motorway junction roundabout barrier.
“My sugar levels must have plummeted on the ride home but I was concentrating so much I didn’t realise it was affecting me until I heard a loud bang, which was me hitting the sign, and I remember lying on the ground and pretty much accepting death,” said 51-year-old Ian.
“My legs were just in a knot but there was an angel on my shoulder that day who literally saved my life.”
That ‘angel’ was off-duty District Nurse Sister Kathryn Bebb who pulled over to help. “I just grabbed my nursing bag from the boot of the car and followed this girl over the barrier to where Ian was on the ground,” said 30-year-old Kathryn from Cusworth.
“When I got there his legs were really badly smashed. I got a couple of lads to call the ambulance and these other two girls helped me as I cut his trousers off.
“He was bleeding quite heavily out of one of his legs where his artery had been severed so I tourniqueted his leg and we applied compression and just kept talking to Ian. He said he was a diabetic and needed some sugar so someone got a can of coke from their car which helped.”
Kathryn, who works for Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), added: “His injuries were very gruesome with a lot of bones protruding but these girls, and everyone who stopped to help, were amazing and it just goes to show what people can do.”
Ian was airlifted to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, by Yorkshire Air Ambulance but doctors were unfortunately unable to save his shattered left leg which was amputated below the knee.
The accident happened in April last year, and Ian has gone through months of painful hospital treatment and physiotherapy with more to come.
“Everyone from the Air Ambulance to the hospital staff have just been fantastic and I can’t thank them enough but this has just completely changed my life and it has been very hard at times,” added the father-of-two Ian.
“My false leg is OK but I still have a lot of pain with my right leg because of the tissue scarring and it’s very difficult to walk, but while I don’t think I will be able to walk without crutches, I’m hoping things will improve a lot.”
He and partner of 20 years Karen got married in June and the couple are looking forward to a new life when they move into a bungalow in Wheatley, Doncaster.
Ian’s accident features in Monday night’s episode of Helicopter ER, the award-winning UKTV programme which follows the life-saving work of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
The programme, which airs at 9pm on UKTV’s real life channel Really, also features the dramatic attempts to save the life of a grocer who collapsed and stopped breathing while loading his van and a boy’s daring jump into the water at Whitby harbour which ends in a serious injury
Helicopter ER is made by York-based Air Television who have won two Royal Television Society awards for their work on the compelling series.
Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) serves 5million people across Yorkshire and carries out over 1,300 missions every year. The charity operates two, state-of-the-art Airbus H145 helicopters and needs to raise £12,000 every day to keep saving lives.

Once a nurse, you're never off-duty. Same with us paramedics, always head on a swivel, eying up people's veins for IV insertion points, and always carrying our obs kit about!

I love watching Brittish emergency shows. They're all super nice to each other. I've seen others where they all introduce kindly like they're about to have tea. I love the fact that they use sedatives on patients which you don't really see here. In the US you just suffer your ass to the ER.
I wonder why that is ?? Why leave patients in agony just for the want of a pain medication ??
Don’t know where you live but in MD pain meds are administered on scene whenever needed
@Julie Heikes ok the point is what laws and I don't want to get sued rules determine when they're "needed"? I've watched waaay more American emergency shows than British, and I've NEVER seen American first responders administer ketamine or any other sedative people just scream and moan their way to the hospital
I think it’s so great they can give pain meds on scene. I understand why you wouldn’t, just not knowing the persons history but, gosh I can’t imagine how painful that would have been without it 😫

By the time we’ll have flying cars, there will be roads that we can automatically set our path and the car will drive for us no doubt. It would be next level dangerous if we would have to drive them ourselves. Imagine what level the drivers test would be like lol. Just saying that it won’t be like how it was in Back To The Future 2.

blubb blubb for your second question, the police eventually closed the road to allow the helicopter to land. The reason why it wasn’t instant is because a sudden road closure may cause crashes as it wouldn’t give the drivers enough warning to slow down. The police have to get the motorway control to create a detour and put slow down warning signs.
