Looks great! When I first moved into my farmhouse there were mice and rats - nasty!! It took a couple years to find and fix all the entries but now rarely find one in the garage. I agree - not in the house!
I really enjoy watching you..I wish I could have been so ambitious to do something like your lifestyle now..But I think now that it's it little to late for that..But god bless you and take care
A lot going on here. Being both and engineer and general contractor here goes: remove awning, posts 6' oc and you will need a pitched roof 6/12 min. The roof covering looks too be 30mil single ply, remove replace with 30mil and metal roof all of it [including the awning]. Foam on the exterior has to go. You won't be able to nail or screw into it and have it hold. You can't see the studs from the outside to nail into. Exterior will need vapor barrier and insulation prior to planking. Interior: wire in 3 or maybe 2 outlets and a ceiling "pancake" box for a light and switch. I would plank all the walls and seal the floor. Exposed ceiling, painted would be just fine. For the "window", fixed frame, build in place. Considering costs, you could double lap the 30mil single ply and complete the roof at a later date.
The longer the cabin sits alone, the worse it gets. Thats how it goes. I personally wouldn’t let my guests stay in it until it’s dealt with. You cleaned up the droppings for now but the rodents remain.
❤❤❤ about the missing items ...my sister had a pet ferret ...which is related to the weasel, ermine familyn....my mom was missing dads shirts ...we found dads shirts ...they were located right behind the kitchen stove ...we found 6 mens shirts all piled above each other stacked behind the stove ...then moms glasses were missing off the table .found them under the bed ...then the potted round cactus with 1 inch spines was missing we found that under the the chair ...this ferret would pullapart ...and carry and hide items in different parts of the house ...very possible an animal like a wesael is hiding items..in your place
Yup, that is what happens with unused buildings. The little critters invade. I would just cover that foam and maybe flip the car window the other way. You are amazing. Thank you for that amazing shout out. You are always so generous. Much love from Sarah, Zeus and myself.
Thank you for the beautiful Alaska scenery, with all your pictures and videos I still think you might consider making a calendar or photo album. You made the bunkhouse liveable, it looks so much better. I would use traps instead of poison for the mice because after eating the poison they don't die right away and might crawl into places like insulation in the ceiling and die leading to possible bigger problems.
I think you should do a little more seasonal cleaning regularly around your property and get things organized as projects for videos and removing things and storing away for sanitation purposes to take out when needed like for guests, and you shouldn’t let anyone sleep in the bunk house until you repair repaint and keeping it intact and clean yikes.
The Sasquatch literally made me jump. I wasn’t expecting it😊. I was looking down and I just happened to look up at the right time he was running towards the door. 😂😂
The roof has held up well with just roofing paper. Don't remove, just add metal over it. The awning...has to go! The inside, Well you are on the right track. I'd take it all out, tarp it, whatever. Clorox it, spray it, and put out rat poison for the shrews, mice. Inside and out! (mint, peppermint, lemon grass, lavendar, etc all around the entry points, and around the structure) I don't want to freak you out....but what you don't see....Insulation in roof, etc., is warmth in cold temps. Draw them out with the poison, make sure they don't come back...and then enclose the ceiling , roof. Bait them in the summer, Make it cold and undesirable in the winter. No bedding, etc. It's a good structure and can be reclaimed, even if it takes a cat, or an ermine!
Years ago I had a cleaning service, found clear ammonia does everything, the smell total goes away, and as a additive to washer cleans and the fresh smell is fantastic let alone the inexpensive cost …….it became my substitute for bleach use it full strength. GED rid of pine soil, and all the rest of those fake cleaners.
Rats and mice invaded our horse barn and pooped/peed on every surface, pulled out insulation, nested and pooped and peed in insulation, ate wiring, chewed into plastic garbage cans holding feed, and anything else you can imagine. It took getting cats to eradicate them, and they did a fabulous job. We cleaned everything down to the hay holders, walls, feed holders, everything. It was a HUGE undertaking. We wore N-95 masks and gloves due to possible hanta virus. I feel for you!🙏🏻😯😒
Glad I included the blue microfiber cleaning cloths to my care package that I sent you. You can use those cloths to clean the little cabin. Awesome clean up job in that cabin. 🤗💖
It truly is beautiful there .Some nice to wake up to in the early A M. The awning need to be removed. If you want it back then build new one using ledger board on the main wall studs.& use joist hangers for roof frame. Install just below the main roof overhang( soffit area). New roof can go over the old one using sleeper boards. Window needs to go or rebed it so no leaks can occur. Leave foam there, just cover it well with vapor barrier and plywood sheets. Nice little project.
I understand completely!! I hate mice!! Once in awhile my mom gets a mouse in her home. YIKES!! When we built our log home my husband sealed it thoroughly. We all don't have any mice. Yaaay!! Oh poor big foot doesn't get any candy.😢😆😂Hugs and kisses to Kenai.🤗😘Take care and God Bless you and Kenai always
Hi Alone. I think that bunk house has lots of potential and income for you also. ❤. Just a little elbow grease and it will looks so nice. I say just use tin on the sides and roof. Put a big window in the front and sides. You could gut the I side and just make it a cute tiny house. I know you said you don’t want a B&B but maybe later you will consider. Have a great weekend dear!! I was gagging with you on the mice poop. I could not. Id have to get someone to come in a clean. I hate germs lol.
Imaging creating coziness in the bunk house and turning it into an Airbnb … the income potential would be off the charts!! Just to be safe I would go through a realtor so guest are screened… and ONLY EXCEPT ADULTS! She could make extra money and make her dreams come true sooner!
Oh, I feel ya on the mice droppings! I pulled out an electric stove to sell it but changed my mind when I discovered it was full of mouse droppings and dried up mouse cadavers. I ended up dismantling and scrapping it.
Good Morning Alone, Your scenery shots are just Breathtaking! Wish Scotty could 'beam me up' for day visits! I know that you'll get the holes blocked up in the cabin just as you did in the 'big house' then all will be well; and it will become just as charming. Excited for you and your friend to have a whole month of adventuring together! Hugs to Kenai : )
Oh my! I was gagging too. I don't like mice or rats. I had a barbecue grill in my porch, while moving the grill at least 5 babies were jumping out of the grill onto the backyard and the mommy which I swatted her our with a broom since she was trying to get at me. I was no way going to use the grill knowing what came out of there. I placed the grill out on the curb, it was gone in flash. Ugh! Once it is cleaned and set up it will be a nice place. The initial part is gross! Loved Sas and Dewey! Be safe.
I hate mice too. You did a great job cleaning that bunk house I see Spring has come to you now. I am late watching this been to the local pool with my two grand daughters Take care
Hahaha I hate mice too, I just finished cleaning a bunch up from the odd mice getting in my cold room over winter, it smells so bad. So I’m with you girl, 🌷🇨🇦
Another great video Alone! Thank you for sharing your home & daily tasks & projects with us. Looking forward to seeing your property become the homestead of your dreams. Thankfully never dealt with mice but i met a few persistent rats in my yard & shed that i quickly resolved. Took their comfy condo home they set up under the shed & under pallets piled with wood. I even relocated the one that would not leave to a lovely forested area down the road a bit😂
Hello Alone. Blocking mice access in the bunk house, getting rid of the mice, and lastly, cleaning the bunk house. In this sequence, you will clean the bunk house only once. Or you already did the first two steps and din share with us.
Hi Alone! Some projects are definitely not fun. Good to hear the the electric update is scheduled. Your friend SAS again. LOL Hope your having a great week.
The bunkhouse episode with Dewey is one of my favorites! I recommend a battery powered leaf blower to make quick work when cleaning your bunk house. I wonder if steel wool and canned spray foam around the periphery of the floor (cracks) may help keep the vermin out. I've read that peppermint oil keeps mice away but have never tried it myself.
Your in a great place. If I was you I would spend more time doing what I enjoy, if I were you. Life is too short to work on something that somebody else will enjoy. You don't get to enjoy it finished for long, after working years to get it like you like. Just do the main things you want then enjoy being there doing what you like. Things that make you happy. Can't wait to get up in the morning and enjoy!!! Maybe working on stuff makes you happy? I'm in Tennessee i love the outdoors here, got lakes all around. We don't have snow much anymore. That is a treat for me. Being snowed in is great!!! I love being snowed in!!!!! Only happens a day or 2 here a year if that. SUX!!!! You got real wilderness!!!! Pristine Earth!!!! How beautiful!!!!! You have real 4 seasons, so wonderful!!!! I'm happy for you. Be nice seeing you catching fish and taking game and prepare it. Do you think your gonna make videos doing that?
Hi Alone! So good to see you and this video again! Hope you're doing great! Missed you my friend! Yes, on our suggestions about your little bunk house cabin there. I'd probably tear it down and either burn it a ways away from the large cabin and property, or have it hauled off. And I'd start fresh with a new build bunk house cabin to code for AK build, install a small kitchenette with a sink that works and drains out away from the property and pest screens put into the 2 inch drainage pvc, and a shallow, sand well and hand pump that is installed at the sink as well, that your visitors have fresh and tested safe for human consumption, so they can cook, clean, basin bath wash, heat water, etc., with actual running water on premise. And I'd put in a actual wood stove as well, for heating, cooking, heating water. I'd also put in the R 32 Code Compliance insulation for AK. And I would create a small living room and an actual sleeping, or bunking area with two bunks on opposite walls. Sleeping up to 4 people. IF, you plan to keep it? Id still do these because it should be comfortable, warm, cozy and convenient. Then I'd find and close all areas where the mice are getting inside, and I'd also treat the adjacent exterior walls to ground, for mice as well. And, I'd cover that ugly exterior foam with some type of siding to make it more attractive. If that spray foam is not environmentally safe, then it's not safe for humans to be around it, exposed to it either. I'd replace the roof, and that over hang too. But the exterior foam? In my opinion, i would definitely tear it down and start over with a clean up to code build. Sometimes trying to correct problems cost more or almost as much as a new build. And if you don't want to build, just buy one of those already built mixed use cabins and have it hauled in, and then finish the interior as you can with a kitchenette, a sleep area, living room area, etc., and save yourself the expense of a new build labor costs. I wouldnt want any visitor to sleep, live, visit, stay etc anywhere that I personally would not want nor look forward to staying, nor sleeping. And, I must admit, I wouldnt want to sleep nor stay in that bunk house cabin. Off grid living, doesn't have to be unsightly, inconvenient, nor miserable. - . Anyways, always wishing you the very Best Wishes my friend!
Hi my friend glad to see your doing good. Haha all the way when you were cleaning I was like Yes yes yes yes haha. I have a cleaning company in south africa so what you did there is 100% with rat and mice you throw away ALL plastic and anything that was open. Mice and Rat pee is the most toxic you can get it can kill a person for sure and make very very sick. You did a awesome job there no need to apologize mice and rat poop can make you very sick when we work in houses that is crazy crazy 100% worse than yours we go in full suit. Rather safe than sorry🎉🎉. Wish I can show you some of the houses we worked in haha you will go crazy 😂
I moved into an off grid type place in the city. A 300 year old garage office turned into an apt. The first 2 years I lived here was a battle with mice and finding all the ways they get in and stuffing them with steel wool. I still have mice off and on but its just a matter of stuffing a hole better usually.
I feel your pain. I have a house that I'm dealing with that kind of clean up right now. But it's about 400 mi away and it's hard for me to spend enough time to complete the project with my dad in tow. At least I have the RV to stay in when I'm there.
How I hang out the no trespassing sign for those four-legged creatures is .... I run LED bulbs that take absolutely no power literally to run and I leave them on in the attic and the basement or areas in which I don't want anyone overstaying their welcome. I'm not saying that a eradicates them but it makes them uncomfortable. I've had a lot less clean up issues.
Vacuum cleaner just for bunk house. Maybe in thrift store might have. Love characters on video. Finding access of entry. Pesticide not harmful to pets and humans.❤😂🎉
YES!! My apartment is in a building across from a gym and a restaurant. It’s also ground floor. Worst scenario for rodent control. 50% Jiffy cornmeal mixed with 50% baking soda is wonderful! And safe for kids and pets. Mice cannot regurgitate or burp. The baking soda once wet (in the stomach) will bubble up and expand until mousie leaves this planet. Usually when mousie feel full it leave to go back to the nesting area and will expire there.
I have lived in horrible places before my 2 little girls and I lived in a 2 bed 1 bath rent house, it had holes in the floor, I had to finish out second bedroom with sheet rock, tape and float and painted, laid down carpet that I bought from a carpet store and it had bugs so had to bomb the house every week for a month 😩 I got a filthy stove given to me which I had to scrub clean b4 I could bring it in and get hooked up to gas line, I was only making 7.00 hr so yeah poor was my first name. We moved when I got a carbon monoxide tester and it went nuts , we were having issues feeling sick so we got out of there and lived in the back of my pickup which had a old leer camper, life was hard, your workers cabin would have been heaven at least you don’t have holes in the floor, mice get gone with bait and traps you just don’t want them eating bait and dieing in the walls as that takes about 4 months to get smell out, yep I found that out the hard way. I am very proud so never took hand outs but worked 2 jobs till oldest became a registered nurse and youngest surgical tech, then I got my property and started living for me, I would never do a air bnb as so many won’t respect your hard work and many won’t leave it like they found it.
Im not thrilled to see and hear you gagging numerous times. Made me gag also. 🤣 that said that is a nice cabin so dont let it get so bad it cant come back to use
Why shake all the sheets and things on the floor when you intend to stuff them in a plastic bag as trash? That just puts more droppings, dusk and stuff on the floor to clean up. If there's no electricity in the cabin how does the microwave, TV and those other electrical appliances work? Your hard work paid off as the cabin looks much better.
Been there and done that! We had mice in one of our RV’S over the years and it was horrible to have to clean it up! I HATE mice too!!!❤❤❤ lol. FYI…. I’d be staying inside with you for sure as those critters crawling on me at night time… ! Yikes!!! 😂😂😂
Oh my gosh!! I have the same exact reaction to mice and their droppings. Your not being prissy. Fight to keep them out of my campervan constantly. Disgusting!!
Maybe some of the galling anchor hocking glass containers to store coffee, utensils, etc etc I . As for the linens, etc,the large metal, storage bins, or even the big metal trash cans could be used to store stuff like that in. That way you would just have the surfaces to deal with and not have to throw all that stuff away
It's always been my dream to live in Alaska but at 51 Im afraid that life is past me.. God bless you for living your dreams
Get a couple of metal trash cans, so when nobody is using the bunk house, all dishes, linens stored in the cans. Food, etc stays at your house when vacant so cleaning is not so hard on you! It will be very nice place to stay after you disinfect and repair. Yes, toss everything!!!
Yup I came here to say the same, but with totes.
@@CarnitaEilertson Rodents can chew through plastic totes 😒🐀

Your ideas for sprucing up the bunkhouse are fantastic. It would make very nice guest quarters.😍

I think you did the right thing and got rid of just about everything. Ask a contractor what they could recommend in limiting the invasion of rodents.
Grow mint and keep it around your cabin to help repell mice!
I love the Bigfoot’s agony! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
There's nothing so satisfying than to look at a house "after" cleaning affects

Finances permitting, I'd bulldoze the bunk house down and replace it with a new, small trailer that is completely sealed.
Flip the window over, shelf inside, small green house window, metal over foam, more insulation
I'm with you on the mouse blechhhh! I always keep traps baited with peanut butter and monitor them continually.

Sprinkle cinnamon around the bunkhouse to keep mice out
Tractor Supply and Ace Hardware sell buckets of mice bait blocks…they work great.
Thanks!
And put bay leaves & dried lavender in each tote to keep bugs out.
I would put out mice traps.Have a good time when your friend arrives. Take care and be safe.

I live in a 103 year old house . Previous owners put a metal roof over the old wood roofing and it's good as gold .
I love your videos ❤ Thank you for sharing your life with us. God bless and angels all around you 🙏.
Could Your dog have taken the measuring cups out there to play with ?
Fully watched and enjoyed, you are such an hard worker with plenty of good advice.😍
I would keep things in clear bins that nothing can get into. I'm like you, don't like mice at all. Put out mouse traps at the very least.
Never should’ve let Dewy on the property! Lol 👍😃✌️🇺🇸💪❤️
You're doing a good job cleaning....BUT if she stays in there what's to stop the mice from joining her, no thanks!!
I would level the place and start from scratch when you can afford to do so.
im glad you dont have rats way scarier. did they run a generator for the tv. adorable little place
You the deal do it day to day be safe
Vacuum cleaner just for bunk house. Maybe in thrift store might have. Love characters on video. Finding access of entry. Pesticide not harmful to pets and humans.❤😂🎉
Gagging with you in MI.
That was a big job, but it turned out pretty nice.
Comedy is n the eye of the beholder sometimes. lol
You are awesome 🎉❤
50/50 mix of baking soda and Jiffy corn bread mix will kill rodents and is not harmful to pets. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻
Very TRUE !!! There's a guy that's shows u that runs a Farm .Put a thing in Cage with WATER Dead.
TRUE!
My rabbits have given birth to 15 baby rabbits, my pigs are getting huge, and my goats are pregnant. It's going to be a great year.
Lol wow nature's been busy. Good for you. 😅
I love all babies
@@myreasonforlife.9511 yes its nice to have new life, and to watch it grow. 😊
Why shake all the sheets and things on the floor when you intend to stuff them in a plastic bag as trash? That just puts more droppings, dusk and stuff on the floor to clean up. If there's no electricity in the cabin how does the microwave, TV and those other electrical appliances work? Your hard work paid off as the cabin looks much better.
one word "MATCH"
Mouse traps of some kind would be helpful and eventually get your roof replaced.
If I came to visit, I wouldn't leave. 😊😎😇
Mice can crawl on vertical surfaces
👍👍
