The video says that the majority of Viking men didn't go on raids and instead stayed behind. The fact is those that stayed behind and didn't go on raids were, therefore, not vikings. They were village people,or ordinary citizens whose clan, group, etc, had men who went out on raids. THOSE men were.... vikings.
When i was in Iceland at the national museum there were many viking skullls some dwarfing my own head and im six two with a huge head. One skull had the gnarliest looking eyebrows, and had to be from a dude that was close to seven feet tall .also there teeth had no cavities as they ate a diet of mainly fish.
When the swedish rus vikings traveled down the rivers in the eastern europe, they met Ibn Fadlan who said ”I have never seen more perfect physical specimens, tall as date palms, blond and ruddy”. So yes they were in fact blond. There are facts that they wore horned helmets as well, maybe not the one you see today in pop culture but one for spiritual practice. Check out ”Torslunda plates” that dates just before the viking age started.
the horned helmets were for rituals not fighting, there are a wall rug from the Viking age found in Norway with horned helmets on it, we have lots of horned helmets in Denmark but they are from the Bronze age , however historians now think we can't really separate the two periods it' fluid and the same people
yes they forget to write that fact when they write articles stating "not all Vikings were blond" they also forget to write that most of the remains the did the study on was from graves in England, Baltic and Russia/Ukraine not in Scandinavia and the old Norse were cremated , however 97% of the remains in those countries had Scandinavian dna , some mixed with local populations , they also found that the level of blonde hair was about the same as in Scandinavia today, and as you write some had red hair, I have not heard anyone wo were part of the study state that most had dark eyes, It may be something this channel just imagine himself , I have heard the women were more masculine than today and men bread the woman to look more feminine the chose the most beautiful ones , I have not heard the men was more feminine and not sure I trust that statement as it was not the women who got to chose anything
Ancient famous literary and recordings of Vikings described that if you saw glass bottle green/sea foam green eyes you were encountering a Viking - what do you think of that?
About Vikings height, if they were as tall as we are nowadays then they were taller than other populations! Remember those real beds that we see at the museums around the world, there were tiny people sleeping on them, which proves that we got taller and taller over time. We can see that guys usually get taller than their parents/fathers.
Many were brown haired, 1:51 lifght brown to blonde, and red, similar to today. Most were 5’7” to 5’ 9”, some were over 6’. Even the chubby one of us were functional because they had to be.
Imagine a Viking? Massive Read haired, blue eyes and huge beard; in other words my oldest son! Both my wife and I have high percentage of Norse Viking blood
I have a hard time believing they didn’t have light hair and light eyes like most Scandinavian people have although I wouldn’t deny there we’re probably many dark hair dark eyed Vikings just not the majority… IMO the skeletons were all found in the same place so could have been Slavic influenced Vikings
It may be true that most Scandinavians have blode hair but if so, it's only a very small majority. About 50 percent of the native Norwegian population has blonde hair. I can't find any stats about the other two Scandinavian countries but I believe blonde hair is more common in Sweden and less common in Denmark. In any case, hair colour in Scandinavia ranges from platinum blonde to black and no shade in that range is considered unusual. There's also the question of age since hair colour can change a lot over time. I'm 100% Scandinavian and I was born with platinum blonde hair. My sister was born with black hair. But my hair darkened over time and her lightened and as adults we both had the same medium-to-dark brown hair colour.
@@tessjuel swedes and fins have more blondes than Norway, I am not sure why bit way, way moe blondes in Finland. However what you guys call "brown hair" to me a latina I consider blond. Platinum hair simply doesn't naturally exist in Latinos pretty much

re colour, during those times only natural dyes were available, the red would have come from madder root, and the blue either from woad or indigo, other colours would come from different planys, or even the wool from black, grey or brown sheep
hahaha very funny that one of the image references for the Vikings is Machu Pichu!!! in Peru, Latin America, right where the Vikings go on vacation!!!! ha ha ha😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅

There have been accounts of their appearances as well, stating they were not blonde and blue-eyed much. In fact, the peoples of the Nordic countries were as you stated a complete contrast to Hollywood ideas. It would seem that the last marauding king of Norway, Harald Hardrada, was something of the template upon which the quintessential Viking appearance was formed. Who can say?
@@VikingsCode I know far too many Nordic people to believe anything Hollywood would have us believe. Maybe if Vikings were some kind of north European surfer culture, things would have been different.

Yes, all Vikings did not have blonde hair and blue eyes. Most were dark haired and dark eyed. But, compared to the rest of Europe, they had more blonde hair blue eyed people.
that is however NOT what the dna study showed at all, it showed the same level of blond hair as Scandinavians have today, plus red hair and some mixing with local population mainly in England, Finland, Baltic, Russia and Ukraine , so in other words the study showed what we already knew in Scandinavia , the only new thing was that the women were more masculine (I'm not sure about what he said about feminine men I have not heard that from the study) and we found out parts of Denmark was a more known trade spot for people in Europe, I guess we thought we were more isolated, we also found out it is very difficult to separate Danish dna from Vikings and Anglo-Saxon dan in Brits because it's the same people Anglo-Saxon dna is very similar to modern day Danes and Dutch , so people haven't really changed all that much
Another misconception (as seen here) is calling all Norse people from that time Vikings. Saying that not all Viking men went on raids is a nonsensical statement. To be a Vikingr or to go Viking was to explore and raid. If you didn't, then you weren't a Viking. So, rather than say that not all Vikings went on raids, you should say that not all Norse were Vikings.
Vikings didnt call themselves Vikings. They were known as Ostmen amongst themselves. People from other areas called them Norsemen,or Viking which means piracy. You say the Norse/Vikings werent blonde and blue eyed. However their descendants are just that having carried the genes of their ancestors down through the ages. So,..where did they get the light coloring if,as you say, they were all dark haired and dark eyed.
hello guys, one question, is there any difference if a tall or short person uses a weapon? I mean if, for example, I decide to use a shield and sword, it benefits me being 5'5 or, for example, a Danish ax or what types of weapons would fit me better since I would like to buy some and train.
Hi Itz_MAFI - this is a very interesting topic! Context, as well as personal strengths and preferences are key points to think about. You can consider what weapons are you most comfortable using? What are you best at? There are advantages to being tall and advantages to being short. Two handed weapons may be longer and bigger but they are usually a lot more unwieldy and slower (especially in recovery). So a tall person may get that additional bonus of extra length with a two handed weapon - but if they miss on the first strike, then they have to recover to defend themselves - and this is quite difficult with a larger weapon. An axe alone is inferior to a sword alone. But an axe and shield is a good combination.
@@VikingsCode Thank you. Maybe you can make a video about it explaining it with more details. I'm sure it will be something very interesting to watch. :)
The spear with shield is the most used weapon ever. Then the hand axe with shield. Both due to affordability and easier learning curve. Dane axe would be next with the sword being the wealthy mans (2nd) weapon after the spear. Swords were expensive and all but the very top tier could be a little iffy in quality. Truly the spear is top dog in virtually every culture. It doesn't matter how tall or big you are for any weapon, it's about mastering techniques. The spear gives you more leeway to survive a screw up no matter how experienced one is. Keeping distance from an opponent can be a lifesaver just in itself.
