to me it can be summed up in 3 reasons to not use it 1 vender lock-in 2 proprietary e-Waste 3 Trash warranty terms because its apple, who rather wants you to buy a new device, instead of fixing it for less than 10% the original cost
I think you are spot-on Shane. This is the time with all the indicators pointing toward Apple going big to own the smart home sector which is, by all rights, still in its infancy. I’m not an IT professional, but when I describe my Apple smart home to friends they are all envious, they just don’t want to invest the time and mental energy to make their home smart. The few installs I’ve done for friends have made some converts. If Apple will do this right and make a seamless, plug-n-play smart home system it will be the revenue stream they need to replace the iPhone.
@@VegasGuy1975Try the Meross opener. I had MyQ until they got greedy and whatever they did and the Meross has worked perfectly and was simple and inexpensive to install.
I would love to see major HomeKit enhancements in terms of features and reliability. Siri on HomePod also needs a ton of work, it’s pretty much a paper weight.
Idk I use all my HomePods, I have tons of smart devices all over my house. I think 23 of them. Plus iphones, iPad, iMac, MacBook. It works perfectly. Never a studder. It can hear you from far away even with a whisper. Or even during loud music. I’ve never had any issues on all my Apple devices ever. Going back to 2002…I have terrible luck btw.
I think Apple have realised two things - 1) the smart home space is there for the taking now. Alexa is a mess and dying, Google Home is car crash, and Smarthings… lol. 2) people like smart homes, not overpriced nonsense like Vision Pro, and that’s not changing. It’s a market that still have a huge amount of potential to tap, that’s only going to grow.
Apple is always late to the party. One thing I will give them is when they finally get to something, it’s usually better than the competition. Hopefully the smart smart display comes soon.
This has historically been true, but lately Apple has been slacking releasing buggy IOS’s and non finished products to the public. It’s super disappointing because I am fully in the Apple ecosystem.
Hey Shane, I think this is something that all of us have been waiting for. And you’re right Apple has an opportunity to truly dominate the smart home space but as you said they have to do it right no one yet has done it, but this is something that I am truly waiting for and something that we all need
Apple should make a robot with a camera. Something that can check the whole home and alert you to any problems that may be occurring. For example: A water sensor detects a leak and alerts the robot to check on it, the robot camera can view it and alert your phone for prompt response. Sticking cameras all over the home is limited and old school. Home hub displays might look cool on the wall but do we really need one? Remote access seems like a better option than something stationary. It’s kind of like getting up to change the channel. Something you only do when in a bind.
Don’t think it’ll ever have the advanced capabilities of Home Assistant. Apple will always have to appeal to the every day person and keep things simple and easy to use. HomeKit + Home Assistant is a good method for those wanting more advanced capabilities.
I doubt they'd ever do that cuz then they'd have to integrate with other brands rather than locking you into their ecosystem! Home Assistant for the win, as always haha
Agree. The least Apple could do is allow for more flexible customization of the Home app. Why must all climate related sensors be grouped, why can't one have the flexibility to display the values of various sensors on the pages for each room? The ability to completely customize the screens that I display in Home Assistant is why I stick with it. Apple has a ton of catching up to do.
Apple is going to do what is good for Apple. Subscriptions in the cloud and nothing local. Apple will never be Home Assistant at best they will have Subscriptions $$$ and make 30% off of the developers in ye ole App Store!
Can’t wait for that control hub. I’m currently using $50 dollars aqara’s magic switch s1e which exposes 6 buttons to homekit and helps me with some basic functions to aid guests in case they wanna control stuff.
A good test for the perceived usefulness of their first SmartHome monitor is how many of us with wall-mounted iPads replace our wall-mounted iPads with the new monitors. We’re clearly in deep enough to where most of us with the mounted iPads will add these new monitors only if they provide unique features and ideal replacements.
I'm thoroughly missing the real focus of what a smart home should do for me. I'm looking for European in wall thread buttons and mains sockets (or mounted in a cable duct). Also think of rotary selector knobs ( physical 2 or 3 or 4 position - not endlessly rotating encoders). These should be mains powered - not battery powered. And wifi or ethernet based kWh meters that bring the data to the Matter controller with a 1 second interval. Both in wall and DIN rail kWh meters - mono and tri phase. And that the Matter controller can process that data locally - with in built battery for short power outages - and that it continues working also when internet is down (modem down). Think about a tamper proof version good enough to serve as alarm system. And thread E27 RGB lamps that do mesh networking for data transfer of products of other brands too. And CO2 meters with 5 minute interval as part of the control of a ventilation system with heat exchanger. And Matter control of the car charger. And cheap wifi displays with customisable layout as to show clock, temperature (also from other rooms), kW and daily kWh values, plus air quality. Make the displays USB-C powered. That should be the priority list ! Sorry but no camera, internet browser and robotic arm needed in my bedroom. That's the perfect recipe for screwing sleep quality. Bed time is for sleeping. I hope these tech giants are going to use their brains and come up with product that are needed. We have the obligation to make our houses environment friendly with a fixed timeline the next coming years. Higher insulated homes need ventilation. During winter self consumption of excess solar energy is key. These basic things should urgently be the focus in the development of the smart home anno 2025. Kind regards, Jan
What is the benefit from a screen on the wall? It seems like I always have my iPad and/or iPhone nearby (and wearing my I watch) and HomePods galore. I’m sure I’m missing out on something good!
You are right about one thing. Apple leads the market with their unified platform. Going from one device to another seamlessly, receiving text, mail and other notifications on multiple devices was a big selling point for me.
I am not sure what apple would have to create to entice me to purchase an actual TV made by them as opposed to an AppleTV (which I do have and absolutely LOVE).
I would have thought the same but Sky in the UK launched this very product a few years ago. It’s very popular. I think people don’t want to plug in anything more than a power cord.
Looking forward to the display quite a bit. Hopefully there is an intercom/drop in type functionality built in too, maybe an AirPlay speaker. Hopefully you can lock the screen to only certain accessories on it as well. That way all kids and guests don’t have all access to all accessories in the home.
Jeez I sooo can’t wait. And about flamin time as you said hey. Take my money💰 Apple. lol. 😝. I just hope if they bring out cameras that they’re POE too.
Question: at 01:53 mark, your camera feed image (thumbnail?) Seems to update LIVE when you turn on your pool lights. Was that just editing or is there an actual product/productS that will show a live update like that from the Apple Home app?
He is viewing the camera feed in one of his rooms in his home through the HomeKit integration via his tv. He also has lights that are in the same room as the camera is. So, when he goes on his tv to view the feed from this room’s camera, he will also see icons for “related accessories” that are also in the same room. So he is just using his tv Remote app on his iPhone or the actual physical Siri Remote to scroll down to that icon for his lights and toggling them on. The icon for the light accessory updates to show the accessory state changed to “on” and, because he’s viewing a live stream of that room’s camera too, he can see the lights turn on in real time. So basically, no special feature or 3rd party app needed. Just looking at his camera (specifically, a camera with HomeKit Secure Video capabilities) on his Apple TV and toggling the accessories via his TV as well. If you have a newer generation Apple TV, just press the power button on the remote and a little “control center” panel will pop up in the upper right corner of your TV. Use the directional pad on the remote and click left twice (go to the far left screen-you’ll see a little HomeKit icon) and select the icon to view all your live camera feeds in each room of your house, and also any other related accessories you have set up in those rooms as well.
Another great video, Shane!Quick question for you. How did you do the 'Code Red" lights in the kitchen? I have been trying to do that for a couple weeks and I cannot seem to figure it out. Thanks in advance!
Shane just recently found your channel and I dig all your HomeKit content and help I’ve been wanting to expand my little setup. What security cams do you use with it? I have a Ring floodlight pro which I don’t want to get rid of unfortunately I know I can’t use it with HomeKit 😢
Okay, I'll ask the question. Once Apple see something becoming revenue center (especially one with security implications they can rightly market too), is inconceivable that they will lock it down from "unsupported hubs", like HomeBridge, Home Assistant, etc? Could Matter certification get around that?
How much better this can be than our iPods already running as main hub. Dedicated motion sensor to turn on the screen when nearby. Cool idea but little late in the game.
Really hoping we get a DIY home security system that is HomeKit supported. Currently just not many proper outdoor security cameras that are roof mounted, etc.
Existing smart speakers and smart displays leave a lot to be desired in my view. In particular smart displays can be annoying with ads and content that you just don’t want to see, and are a distraction with young kids, which is why I have removed such displays from my home. I would be interested to see Apple’s take on this space, especially given their focus on privacy and less focus on ads.
Shane, great video. Have always appreciated the focus of your channel just as you framed it up front: on products and capabilities that are in our hands today. That being said, I really value your POV on upcoming Apple smart home possibilities. While I'm optimistic about what the Apple home control display could be like, I'm more excited about the Home app and underlying Home platform getting a much (much) needed upgrade to address shortcomings we've all lived with for years now: flexible dashboards, better control of device groupings, simplified and more usable automations, and just a better user experience in general. If they do nothing but that, it will be a massive improvement IMO. I'm not that sure what value they'll be able to offer in the areas of smart TV's, cameras, locks, etc. I don't see all those things the same, but I'm not that excited about being forced to accept Apple design and form factor choices across my overall home. What will they really add in value prop for a TV over 3rd party TV's with an Apple TV attached? Just make the Apple TV more powerful. Cameras - is Apple really interested in supporting solar power, PoE, battery powered devices, etc, like are available from other vendors? Maybe, but why do it? To your point, just support >1080p in Home for goodness sake. Locks - this is already a hack industry in my view, mainly in terms of design choices and power management solutions in my view. Not enough high-end design choices in locks. I guess if Apple was committed to solving these core issues with current smart home tech, I'd be interested, but seems like a big de-focus from what has been Apple's core mission for decades. I also agree 100% with your statement that this market is still up for grabs and no one has done it right to date. Regardless, I'm following these rumors with keen interest, and hoping that the first and most important thing - making what we already have more usable and useful - gets addressed and done right as we all know Apple can.
Really wish Apple would acknowledge the Smart Home as a huge space in the future and create a larger more determined development team to lead the way in the space. Hope that’s what this is, but we shall see.
I’m an “all in” (mostly in) Apple guy. I could be wrong, but I’m not sure how much the masses care about smart home stuff. As far as smart home stuff goes, I’ve got a google nest thermostat and an Apple TV 4K and that’s about it. I’m content to flip a light switch on myself and have the color warm white. I think that’s how most people see things. I’m not sure how big the market is for Apple to go all in with it. I might be interested in if they make a super smart (Apple Intelligence) speaker that is really cool.
I get what you're saying but my family is exactly like you are and I've been getting them into the smart home things slowly and they're starting to really like it and understand it and want to use it more.
More and more people are getting smart home devices each year. If you think about it, just about every appliance you can buy now can be “connected” in some way…ovens, washing machines, refrigerators, etc.
@ I agree that it’s right for some people, but I’m just wondering if it’s enough people to make a significant market. My LG clothes washer has a bunch of features such as starting remotely. I rather just throw the clothes in, choose the cycle, and push start.
Rumors are merely speculative in nature. While it is plausible that a smart display will be released, it is improbable that it will resemble the current suggestions.
I would like a hub (apple, Hubitat, home assistant) to learn what devices are turned on/off at what times and to automatically adjust rules to how I live…
I just want Apple home to work after every update. I had to turn off auto updates on my HomePods and appletvs to avoid the dreaded re-syncing of everything for two hours when I sit down to watch tv. Just make it reliable…
This is much more than Apple creating an iPad knockoff. It is about elevation of the platform. Really geeked to (hopefully) see a first device designed with deep hooks into the ecosystem … the use cases as Apple Intelligence gets to know you with more detail, could really elevate the Smart Home experience.
I had an Apple smart home set up but compatible device selection is limited and EXPENSIVE! Having to use bridges running Home assistant, Scrypted and others. Tuya local. It became a daunting task. I just switched everything to Alexa. Don’t get me wrong, Apples platform is easier and better but not worth the extra cost and headaches at this point. I control many different fan/light switches, wall outlets. My Midea 6 zone mini splits. 6 Reolink cameras. Hybrid water heater. Dehumidifier. The list goes on. I’ll stick with my current Alexa setup for now.
You weren’t able to just use homebridge or home assistant? I have been doing a lot of research and everything I see seems to say homebridge answers most issues with non native HomeKit devices.
It is a pain. I use HomeKit, Homebridge and Home Assistant. That being said, family will use the Apple app and I’ll use Home Assistant in the background.
@@TheKilrmyYup, HomeBridge running Tuya local but when I was using it, support had stopped. Always having to re-up with another email address, new account to get the local device ID’s. Home assistant was running in a docker container on my synology NAS. If I give it another shot, I’ll use a raspberry pi. Trust me, I would much rather use Apple home, easier all around for routines, motion detection etc.
@ I am just starting to build out my smart home. In fact, haven’t even moved in yet but getting myself prepared. I want to use HomeKit. I already got a Raspberry Pi and I have HomeBridge on it. You think the Pi will make it a bit more convenient/reliable?
@@TheKilrmyYes, raspberry pi is the way to go. Get one that is powered by PoE. I use Ubiquiti equipment with several AP’s throughout my home. All powered off a Unifi PoE switch. If you use an extra computer or a NAS you should consider energy consumption. It all adds up over the course of a month.
I’m a 100% Apple user incl HomeKit. And tbh the biggest issue with Apple isnt the products… it is how utterly shockingly bad Siri and how they are clearly struggling to come up with new ideas.
I want the capability of the system knowing where I am in and around the home and I just say turn on the lights, and it just turn on the lights where I am at. And also add a qualifier like kitchen , front porch.
Yea I look forward to more of this. HomeKit already supports this a little bit. HomePods know what room they are in so if you say to a HomePod “turn on the lights” it should turn on just the lights in that room.

I’m in the process of fully transitioning myself and my family away from Apple Home due to its lack of features and stability (I started about a month ago). I have almost completely switched to Home Assistant. With HA, I can do anything I want, and everything works seamlessly on my Mac and iOS devices, even with CarPlay, which is really useful. Apple is once again late to the game, just like they are with AI advancements.
Apple needs to make progress here as I use Alexa to control my home automation far more often than I do with Siri. Alexa allows me to say something like "Turn on downstairs bathroom fan for five minutes", where such capability doesn't exist with Siri. I do like Apple's Home app much better than Amazon's app, but with all of my lights, thermostats, doors, etc. automated and controllable by voice, I use Alexa and voice far more often. I don't think that Apple needs to make all of the devices (door locks, thermostats, switches, etc.), but historically that is how Apple has achieved interoperability vs. using open standards and that is likely one of the reasons that Apple hasn't done a deep dive into home audo/theater or home automation. There are a multitude of players there already and most of us have struggled through open standards, beta firmware, etc. to make these automation work for us, so it will be interesting to see how Apple approaches it.
I’d rather they focus on fixing the simple things. Thread network that works, better automations, more statistics like energy monitoring, better UI on the home app. SmartThings is much advanced and doing more with their platform right now. Apple can take a thing or two from them. Simple to use too.
It’s still annoying I can have something playing on the Apple TV and anything similar to the word “Siri” activates it. The HomePods can sort of filter each other out, but for whatever reason it doesn’t filter out audio streams from the TV it SHOULD be aware of.
Apple has always been late to the smarthome game. When they did enter, they shunned established standards and protocols. They joined Matter to stay relevant, they initially were leaps and bounds everyone else for Matter support. They've reverted back to their old ways of limited functions and devices, ie power metering, long after they've been adapted into the standard. I think what ever apple does will be limited and disappointing. At most we will get a more capable voice assistant letting siri remain a strong complement to other robust automation platforms like Home Assistant.
Sidenote: why do any of us need smart thermostats on our walls once we have a HomeOS smart display? I'd love for someone like Ecobee to make a HomeOS app so that I can put a HomeOS smart display where my thermostat is now. Instead make a headless thermostat controller that I can place in the same room as my furnace (potentially allow for a hardwired ethernet connection to it as well).
Love the idea Apple may (finally!) put its customer-centric design skills to the smart home environment. As someone who has owned just about every one of their products since my first IIe I’ve been so disappointed by their approach to HomeKit. Let’s be honest, it’s rubbish but for the most basic of use cases. If they DO go this path then existing equipment like the old iPads so many of us already use as HA dashboards MUST at least be capable of running a HomeKit dashboard even if the AI grunt work needs to be done by a dedicated device. 🤞
What do you think about Apple's new focus and upcoming push into the smart home market? Let me know below!
to me it can be summed up in 3 reasons to not use it
1 vender lock-in
2 proprietary e-Waste
3 Trash warranty terms because its apple, who rather wants you to buy a new device, instead of fixing it for less than 10% the original cost

How much better this can be than our iPods already running as main hub. Dedicated motion sensor to turn on the screen when nearby. Cool idea but little late in the game.
Well i hope my Homekit cameras from Aqara and TP Link are able to support their best resolution (ie higher than 1080) and pan and tilt.
i need 4k nd local storage 4 me 2 switch to homekit. i use home assistant
Sounds super fun but only if Apple can work out my HomePods playing music randomly and turning on TVs using Apple TVs whenever it feels like it.
Really hoping we get a DIY home security system that is HomeKit supported. Currently just not many proper outdoor security cameras that are roof mounted, etc.
Radar sensors need to come with it so the positional information around the home is rock solid and way better than just simple PIS
I’d be happy with a dedicated Apple smart home control, and display software update for iPad 2 or higher.
It would be so cool if Apple partnered with Aqara
Just wondering if HomeKit can operate Homeskillet?
I just want the HomePod to have native Spotify support not through airplay
EcoFlow is finally putting a light on their river series? 🎉
Yes!
I wish they would buy Sonos
Cant see where this new device would be any better than any other iPad/iphone next to me in my room.
You should review RATGDO!
Apple must push very hard cause they are super later with Matter. Lot of customers are switching to Home Assistant.
Well said. Thank you for the comment!
Just want thread networks to work better
Arent we tracked enough? I doubt people are going to sign up for more tracking
Really wish Apple would acknowledge the Smart Home as a huge space in the future and create a larger more determined development team to lead the way in the space. Hope that’s what this is, but we shall see.
It seems to be the case! Hoping 2025 will be a big year for the Apple Smart Home.
google and amazon adverts on those visual devices turn off alot of ppl
Apple has an opportunity to clean everything up, streamline it better.
I would like a hub (apple, Hubitat, home assistant) to learn what devices are turned on/off at what times and to automatically adjust rules to how I live…
lets have apple AI to decide if we are allowed according to ESG to turn on the lights hmmm
I can't wait for the display! That's a lack of portfolio indeed..
They’re called lithium iron phosphate battery batteries which is what Lifepo4 stands for
Alexa dominates that space and it's not changing
I just want Apple home to work after every update. I had to turn off auto updates on my HomePods and appletvs to avoid the dreaded re-syncing of everything for two hours when I sit down to watch tv. Just make it reliable…
This is much more than Apple creating an iPad knockoff. It is about elevation of the platform. Really geeked to (hopefully) see a first device designed with deep hooks into the ecosystem … the use cases as Apple Intelligence gets to know you with more detail, could really elevate the Smart Home experience.
I’d love to see a HomeKit that actually works for the other 50% of the people that have it.
It's like a phone, but for your home! It's the year 2000.
"No one has it done right". I hope they listen to the people and do it right. Make it flexible and not lock people in with half solutions.
would be cool if Homekey didnt break as soon as I added a second aqara lock
I've never had this issue.
I’m a 100% Apple user incl HomeKit. And tbh the biggest issue with Apple isnt the products… it is how utterly shockingly bad Siri and how they are clearly struggling to come up with new ideas.
fml I just bought a HomePod
All we know is that whatever they release its gonna be expensive
Let’s hope this fixes no response devices
I learned to don’t be attached to a company for smart things.
I’d rather they focus on fixing the simple things. Thread network that works, better automations, more statistics like energy monitoring, better UI on the home app. SmartThings is much advanced and doing more with their platform right now. Apple can take a thing or two from them. Simple to use too.
This explains why you can no longer use iPads as a home pod.
I don’t get how that little monitor is better than using an iPad and a wall mount… Just the price?
Running software dedicated for smart home control would be the main differentiating factor in my opinion.
Please just forget HomeKit and move to Home Assistant
Love the idea Apple may (finally!) put its customer-centric design skills to the smart home environment. As someone who has owned just about every one of their products since my first IIe I’ve been so disappointed by their approach to HomeKit. Let’s be honest, it’s rubbish but for the most basic of use cases. If they DO go this path then existing equipment like the old iPads so many of us already use as HA dashboards MUST at least be capable of running a HomeKit dashboard even if the AI grunt work needs to be done by a dedicated device. 🤞
