    It's funny people criticized bonilla for this. Yet we criticize all the athletes who burn through their money as soon as their career is over. To me this is brilliant, and offsets any monetary pitfalls one might face in their life

      Bobby wasn't even the first person to do it. It was a thing before Bobby did it. The Mets did a deferred contract with Darryl Strawberry in 1985. Long before Bobby's. So it was a normal thing. The Mets are known for doing it more than any other team.

    • @J.C...
      @J.C... 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joelombardo403 and that's funny because the Mets have had countless players with deferred contracts. Even before Bobby. But everybody's mad about Bobby because people think he's the only person to ever do it. He is not. Not by a long shot.
      It was done before Bobby did it and it continued after Bobby did it. Griffey is getting g paid for the next 15+ years and he hasn't played in 14 years.
      Deferred contracts have been around baseball for a LONG time. Long before Bobby Bonilla Day was ever a thing. Had the creator done his research, all this could've been put in the vid and everyone could have learned something but he didn't. So he believed Bobby was the first, too. WRONG.
      Whats even funnier is that a lot of people dont seem to understand deferred contracts. He gets that. Money no matter what. There's no reason to be mad that he decided to be paid later, when he actually would need the money.

    IMO, I don't know why more professional athletes take this route. You're essentially taking a little off the top now to get paid more later. Think of it as insurance in case you were careless with your money when you were younger or just the victim of bad investments. This nest egg keeps you out of the poor house. Smh

      But it ain't special. Plenty of people have done this. Griffey gets paid for the next 10 or 15+ years. He ain't the only one. I just know him off the top of my head because he's my favorite player ever. I think it might be Cincinatti that's paying Griffey. I'd have to go back and look but he took very little money while he was there in order to get paid for years after he retired. It was all planned way back. So Bobby ain't special. Not sure why people only talk about him as if he's the only person still getting paid by a team they don't play for and haven't played for in 10+ years.

    It's a fun story but Bobby Bonilla would have made far more money investing the $5.9 million payout in an index equity fund than the yearly check, which is basically an annuity. I don't know if Bobby Bonilla likely would have had that kind of discipline.

      It's nothing special or weird. Everybody does it. Not just Bobby like they make everyone think. Griffey hasn't played since 2010 and he's still getting paid be either Seattle or Cincinatti and will for the next 10 or 15 more years. He ain't the only one.
      TBH, I doubt Bobby was even the first. He's just the only one people talked about. All the smart players do it.

      it allowed the mets to spend more and in turn they signed their ace for the 2000 season when they won the pennant due to hampton's wonderful year. hampton left and the mets then got a comp pick which they used on a hall of fame talent in david wright who then captained the team until 2018 ,including another pennant in 2015, when his back gave out from spinal stenosis. all in all the decision worked out for both sides.

      @@BBUYTTV nope. It was likely Darryl Strawberry from what I gather. He had a deferred contract in 1985 with the Mets, as well. They were known for doing it more than any other team. Deferred contracts were nothing new in baseball when Bobby did it. They had been around for a long time already.
      You might should have done a little research on the subject before the vid so you could have real history of deferred contracts in there and not just what everybody believes, which is wrong. And that is that Bobby Bonilla was the first and only person to ever defer payments from a contract. He was not. Not even close. Like I said, everybody did it. They just bring up Bobby as if he was first and only person to ever do it when he is not. It's been a thing and will continue to be a thing.
