Been bass fishing for 40 years. This is first I have heard of trimming up a bit for reverse. Tried it recently and it put a big smile on my face. Doing it all the time now.
Thank you.
Reverse tip is fantastic. Thank you. I needed that in my life. We don't all grow up on the water.
Thanks John, I’ve owned and been driving bass boats for several years but didn’t know about trimming up for reverse. Makes maneuvering around the dock so much easier.
That trim up for reverse trick would be a great example for a physics 101 class. Thrust vectoring and such. Great vid!
Scott Robinson Thanks!
That tilt up for being in reverse and the livewell video just got my sub. Some really dam* good info. Some of the best boating info I've seen so far. Well explained, appreciate ya
This is one of the better videos out on boating thank you
I didn't know to trim your motor up in tight quarters. That is SO helpful. Thank you.
18 years on a boat and you taught me stuff i didnt know.. i love this thank you
I had a boat in my early 20's for a few years. Then took about a 25 year break. I've been in my new boat for about a year and a half now. I never knew the trim up trick for reverse. Thanks for that one for sure.
Looks like I am not alone with the reverse trick. Definitely useful!
I've been boating for over 50 years and would have never figured out that trimming trick I'll try it next time thanks.
Holy crap! Trimming up for reverse is going to change my life. It makes sense but I never thought of it before. I just assumed reversing an outboard would always be sluggish and there was nothing you could do about it. Thank you!
I'm about to buy my first boat. I've been a professional studio truck driver for 30 years in all types of weather but know I have just about 0 clue of how to operate a boat safely. I've learned a lot just in this video! I've got a lot of practicing to do, but thank you!!
I just bought a Alumacraft w a 60 horse Yamaha, and this video taught me a bunch of things! Thank you!
Many have said this, but the trim up while reversing tip makes a lot of sense!
That reverse one at the end is really helpfull and I definitely will start using that
Looking to get my very first boat very excited but also feel like I don’t know anything! This helped a lot man!
Thanks man as a new bass boat owner you help more than you know
First time boater here! Picking my brand new 2020 Tracker Pro Guide 175WT up on 08/22/20. Your tutorial is priceless. Well explained and easy to follow. You have a new follower! Thanks Captain Crews!
Picking up a 190 on Wednesday. My Dad is intimidated as hell, biggest boat hes been on is a 16' gregor with a 15 tiller, sent this to him. Should help him out some. Great tips
I’m still a teen that is very close to having a drivers license, my dad let me drive the boat the other day and it wasn’t too hard but watching this helps a lot, thank u
fk learning how to drive a bass boat. Just make sure you have a mecr 400R on the back, slam the handle all the way down and "do it for dale". Having a 3 sprayed on the side of your boat gives 50 more HP also.
Just send contacts for your next of kin.
Raise hell praise dale. Come on!!
Thanks for a great video! I just purchased my first bass boat and I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as I can before I hit the water!
Been driving smaller boats for years. Had a v18, but it's 10yrs. Never had a problem with reverse, but I've never heard that tip. Great info
I'm a little older (retired Navy) but never had a chance to get a bassboat. I've been putting my boating partners boats on the trailer, but still haven't actually driven a bassboat out on the open water. Looking on buying a bassboat real soon, but still a little nervous. Thank you for this video and looking forward to any more or these you share in the future. Cheers!
Bill Hill Hope you get a boat soon! You deserve it.
Did ya get your bassboat yet? Im looking to buy my first boat aside from jon boats and kayaks, and im excited! From one vet to another thanks for your service shipmate!
Subscribed. That reversing tip alone was Gold Jerry, Gold I'm telling you!
I learned a lot from mistakes I made in my first few months of ownership when I first started driving my first boat in 1994. Great tips for everyone.
Thankx man I am looking forward to get my first bass boat out on the water!
Thank you Mr Crews I learn a lot from your videos
I appreciate it thank you. I’ve never owned a boat and looking at getting my first this year and don’t want to end up on TH-cam as one off the boating videos gone bad!!
Thank You for this video I'm personally looking for my first boat and I'm wanting to learn how to operate a boat and this video is a very important and useful knowledge to me. Thank You and have a Blessed day Sir.
You are welcome!
I had this issue w/ my sailboat! I get it now!
Excellent video!! Interested in more for sure. Boating etiquette while underway, right if way, would be good for a lot of folks to hear. Also, never run faster than you are comfortable!!!!
KILL SWITCH AND PFD......ABSOLUTE MUST. Thank you for emphasizing both of these. Too many videos out there of boat drivers getting tossed and the boat continues running. The kill switch must always be attached when running and everyone should be wearing a PFD. Always plan for the worst thing to happen. If it never does, no harm done. But......if it does happen these two things can save your life.
Kevin Johnson Yes! Thanks man
This helps a lot thanks can you do a review on all the switches on the boat what needs to be turned on before you start your boat what needs to be turned on for your fish finder to turn on live well switches all I know is there's a lot of switches
You explained this so good! I’ve learned a lot in so little time.
GREAT ADVICE!!!!!!
Next video, throw in a reminder about checking depth before taking off!!!!
Good tips, sir! Thanks for sharing!
Found this video very informative. I have owned several boats over the years but never owned one with a hydraulic trim until I got the one I have now.
Great video, thank you.
You taught me a couple of things today!
Excellent video thank you! Also great content period 👊
Boat lessons are great👍🏻 thanks
Ready for part 2 . Thank you
Good information. The reverse tip was excellent.
Great Video. I have been driving boats most my teens and twenties. Been out of it many years. Hoping to buy in next year. The reverse tip is something new to me. Thanks.
Jamey Nelson Good deal. 👍🏼
Great reverse tip!
great video very informative
Great tutorial thank you.
Thanks for the lessons
Great instructional video & insights for rookie boaters like me :) hope you smash'em on the St Johns river!
Been on boats and also rented over the years, purchasing a new 21 Lowe fishing boat in December. This video gave me a lot of additional knowledge needed to really feel comfortable and safe wile fishing with my wife. Awesome Job! Do you have a winterization video out there for bass boats. Thx
Estou cursando Construção Naval na Fatec de Jahu-sp, gostei muito do vídeo!
Thanks! I wish this was available a couple yrs ago when I stared out. I'l follow u for the rest of the upcoming series because ive kinda learned by watching during Guide trips and etc. Maybe I can pick something up! Great Video!
Reggie Donner Thanks
Awesome! Thank you
Thanks for this video
Really help 👌
Interesting, I’ve always heard to raise the trim 3/4 to get on plane and to lower it afterwards but it hasn’t been working well for me so I’ll try this
Great video
Thanks!
Wish you would do a video of controlling the boat with waves coming from the sides of the boat
Will do
You wanna hit waves at a diagonal. Especially if you have a lot of weight in the boat. You don’t want to let the waves hit the side of your boat
@@moronmonkey1 thank you do you wanna be trimmed up or down when hitting them
Thanks I purchased a boat and a friend of mines took me out and he did the total opposite of what you were doing now I’m afraid to drive it thanks a lot for the info
Great tips Thanks
Gr8 video.
Thank you. I just bought a Bass Boat last week and I really liked your tip for reverse. One thing I noticed was how hard the steering is when the motor is trimmed down on a slow plane. Is that normal? The stearing really lightens up alot when I trim it up once the boat is up on plane, but I can't imagine why it is so stiff while I'm trying to maneuver at slow speeds like around the dock. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I just found your channel and plan on watching all your videos.
That’s great! The stuff steering does not sound normal but it is always easy when the motor is going. Thanks
What causes and what is the fix for porpoising as you come off plane but continue to move forward at a slower speed?
Great tip on trimming up for reverse. Never considered that before, but will certainly use it in the future.
weight dispersion 5lb rear = 1lb front. Also you can trim up.
Just bought a bass boat. Need to learn how to drive it faster safely instead of putt around the lake. Thanks for the tip.
Awesome video John! About to bring home my new boat from the dealership this week so this was definitely helpful. Would love to see a more advanced course!
I see the reverse trick at work. When I'm backing up and have box end of the barges on the stern its harder to stop or maneuvering then if there are rakes barges on the stern
Nice tips thank you!
Looking to buy my first bass boat too... Thanks...😎
Thanks man. Great info.
Long long overdue video IMO, thank you!
Maybe you’ll touch on more stuff like, overtaking other boats. Passing on coming boats. And just plain boating common courtesy on future videos.
BTW...I liked and subscribed. 👍
Michael Lamb Great ideas.,Thanks
Trim in reverse makes sense. I drive like hell on wheels dont mind to get boat air Bourne at all maybe thats why i cant keep a co angler lol
Good video, I have been driving my boat now for over 3 years. When I drive it I'm not driving it to full speed. I'm looking at the tach and I'm not going over 5400. I read in a manual that the Mercury Optimax rpm is like 5460. My question is the engine governed so I could drive it wide open or should I be looking at the tech?
Good Info!! Thanks
Great onfo keep doin these videos they will help lots of new boaters ,maybe some on my lake will watch because some people are idiots
Great info; thanks!
good job jon
When should you run the bVillage pump ??? Do you have it powered all time or only when needed???
for the two footer waves, do you adjust trim at that point or just reduce speed
Depends on the wave spacing. You have to slow down if they are wider.
One day I will get a beauty like that
what about on roguher lakes? with smaller white caps? do you still want to stay on plane and try to stay up over them or go slower. want to make it a more comfortbale ride.
have a 20 ft alumacraft with a 250 SHO
Thanks 👍
I am 73 I never take my Supenders life jacket off! I have a heavy retractable dog leash on my belt loop be sure you can get back in the boat!
Rough water driving video would be awesome!!
John Crews sweet thanks
@@JohnCrews get John Cox to tell me how I can get an aluminum boat and not get killed trying to get across the Potomac at 3pm.
Scott Robinson Them big aluminum boats do pretty good in rough water.
Thank u awesome
Well the reverse gear is exactly the same as the forward gear.. But you don't want to shift from forward to reverse or visa versa at more than an idle speed..
Im 10 and i can drive a baot but what me and my dad do is we go fast kinda and then as we go faster we lower the engin
Bass boat 101. Floor it!!!
So my 2 semi problems are-
1. the boat wants to turn right more than left and it’s harder to turn left
2. It gets on plane a little slower than I’d like
Any solutions?
I’ve wondered why kill switches are really important on modern-day boats with hot foots? If you get ejected wouldn’t the boat just idle?
Hunter Bull always nice to have as many fail safes as possible, in the event your hot foot doesn’t return to idle during ejection, like somthing jammed, or malfunction, etc, you have that peice of mind knowing 100% the engine will be killed. Better to have it and never need it, than to need it and not have it.
It’d still be in gear.
@@jimn1968 yes but it wouldn’t be on plane. Takes away the danger of a prop spinning at very high rpms
Beauty!!!
That lake looks familiar
most bass boats DO NOT come with a hot foot and trim on the column especially the boats people new bass fishing will have but some good info anyway.
I also wear a helmet and elbow pads
DON'T EXPECT the other boaters or party barge, jet ski, to go by boat traffic rules .
I don't know why I'm watching this with my 14 foot Jon boat that goes 5mph max
The "tip of the boat" is called the bow. Just say-en.
Anthony Thanks man. I’ll remember that one!
In your jack plate 101 video you didn't ease off the throttle and your Merc became a submarine 🤣 you also took a pretty good splash onto your rear deck... Just saying the obvious 🤔
And not to mention your oil isn’t going to be lubricating the upper half of you motor as much if your trimmed alll the way down and idling around
You con a boat not drive it
I con a too
Bass are oversized minnows. Dumb as f….
Gars and Bowfin are the real deals. Stop listening to Grand Dad’s false wisdom on what’s game and what’s trash. Bass are boring along with salmon and white man trout.
