@@WayneTheBoatGuy I bought a 2002 Stingray 240CR over the weekend. Beautiful boat with 370 hours and moderate wear considering the age. The water was a bit rough in Crisfield once we got out of the harbor but the vessel felt really good in the choppy water. I've got it home now and I think that I figured out a good name for her with the help of a friend, the "Knot Wright". Currently I'm going over the entire boat, cleaning it and getting ready to fill in some nicks in the fiberglass (nothing has protruded into the hull, just surface scraps). Do you recommend a fiberglass filler? I have two small sections (about 1" a piece and 1/4" wide) that need some TLC. I was going to treat it like a car or bike unless someone has a better idea. The trailer was driving my truck nuts because of apparent bad wiring or a plug. It thinks one second that the trailer is connected and then it's not. I need to go over the entire thing before taking it back out onto the road. Luckily the boat ramp is less than 1.5 miles from my house and I live in the country. I look forward to watching all of your videos.

Just bought my first boat. Heading to the lake today for the first time. I am fully "Green." I have been driving commercially for over 30 years, and decided I really wanted a boat, though I realize a boat is a different animal. 1985, 17 ft fiberglass Glassmaster w/ 2 stroke v-4 Johnson 120 outboard. Slow and steady today. Thank you Wayne, for these "must have" tutorials!!!! Safety First!

Am a water person, on the water lot of
Times, enjoy boating. Just getting certified and plan to buy a boat myself. I never drive one before, but I have an idea now it works thanks for sharing this valuable point.
You can do it!
Anticipation is key. Control is into the wind and tide. Thrust moves the stern, not the bow, when steering. Position the wheel then back to port and kick to starboard without touching the wheel. Do this in an open area first. Let the wind and tide take you there, then use them to 'land' the boat.

As a direct drive ski boat owner, there’s definitely a big learning curve to owning one as opposed to a stern drive. It is definitely something to think about. I didn’t understand at first that depending on prop rotation, that when you kick it in reverse it will go to the right or left and you definitely don’t have any rudder authority on a direct drive in reverse. Good stuff to know. I’m on a vintage ski boat page on fb and I always pass along that info to new DD owners as well as some of your videos as well. It’s definitely good info to know.

I picked up a 12ft V bottom Starcraft, 1976 version, with Shore Landr trailer to refurbish. Came with Danforth anchor. Replaced rotted seats with pressure treated 1x8 boards. Adding glue on indoor/outdoor carpet to seats. Keeping bottom bare. Bought 2.5hp Suzuki 4 stroke motor, extension handle and spare prop. Waiting on PA Fish and Game for title and rego to come back so I can insure the combo. Transom is solid but I plan to further preserve it with marine polyurethane. So far so good. Bought quick release seat mounts and compatible swivels. Ordered bimini top frame and canvas, fire extinguisher, signal horn, emergeny SOS flasher, throwable flotation cushion devices, Debating whether or not to add a pedestal to elevate seat..... Passed mandatory online PA Boater Education course.... Looking forward to getting out on some water and fishing. Thanks for the quality instructional videos. cheers

Nice! I also have a 12 foot V hull with a 2.5 but mine's a 2 stroke. Let me know how the bimini works out, I haven't seen one with a frame width narrow enough to mount on my hull.
Also, an auxillary engine is a good idea as most of us cant get out and walk if need be!!! CHEERS from westcoast Canada

About to buy my first (used) boat, I've driven other boats on a few occasions, but I know I have a lot to learn with a big learning curve, trial and erro/experience... just like learning to drive a car (minus the brakes lol)
Knowing we have a lot to learn is half the battle! You've got the right mindset.
I have a long ways to go myself, but one good tip I've learned is that once you've shifted to neutral, steering does nothing. The prop must be spinning to have any control of direction. In neutral you're at the mercy of the wind and current (which is fine if you can make it work for you).
And that's one of the big differences compared to driving a car!
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Shawn and Wayne, that is not entirely true. The Outdrive or lower unit in neutral will act as a rutter and does affect direction some .....

I've learned that when driving your boat and especially docking your boat you can use the wind and tide to your advantage.
Very true! And that’s a challenging skill to master.
It is challenging if you do it wrong you can damage your boat so use ropes to help guide you
I just bought a 19' CC and the thing feels huge to me. It's docking and putting it back on the trailer that worries me 😂. Boating is a total trip first you have to find a decent boat. Then if the boat is second hand people want big money for trashed boats. Even if you find what you think is a good deal you will be working on something there's always something. Then when you finally have the boat ready the next level of stress is learning how to launch it dock it and load back on the trailer. Meanwhile all the experienced boaters are either laughing at you or getting pissed at you. Then there's always the learning curve of being on the water and knowing where it's safe to travel and where the shallows or hidden dangers are. There's always hidden danger out there. The only thing I can do is remember every experienced boater started out just like me. If I quit out of embarrassment or intimidation then I don't belong in a boat to begin with.
As a relatively new boater myself - it is hard, foreign and a pretty steep learning curve. So many boaters have been doing it since they were kids and really don’t understand how intimidating many boating tasks can be!

Great video here, I enjoyed it of course. I have learned with my single inboard outboard Sterndrive my so called prop wash is to the right. So when I proceed forward my craft drifts to the right. All a learning curve slow and easy.
I think all single engine boats pull to the right - It was so frustrating for me when I was starting out before I learned that they just don't quite go in the exact direction you steer them!
Me listening, @4:07 the fisherman in me did you see 👀 that fish jump.
Lol - almost every time I shoot video at the marina some fish jump!
Small steps, like most things, we could talk all day but once on the water the boat soon lets you know how to handle it, speed should be the last thing you attempt, just get a feel for the thing and the always watch the conditions, things change so quick when your on the water and always wear a decent quality life jacket at all times.

I smirked at this just cause the relativity is like "who knows how that's like " 👍 maybe like a RWD old school car with fresh snow and no chains or snow tires. And throw in the fact unless you can account for the oceans own want to throw your boat around. Idk never driven one before but I seen people in dinghies and all the way up to the luxury big ones with a whole mini apartment in the bottom . They make it look easy but I'm sure there's a huge Learning curve. Must feel good to say "I'm the captain" albeit your just a mammal surrounded by an environment we have no business being in.

Would a trolling motor help in the mariner greatly
I guess it could for certain boats because a trolling motor is lower powered. But with any motor it takes practice & patience in ideal conditions to start to really feel confident.

I am something intimidated by the fact that I am surrounded by some many professionals, but last week one of these guys actually hit the reef. The reverse kicked in a bit to late and I was amazed when I saw that because it showed me that even the professionals have the same challenges, but they have just gotten professionals at facing their fears.
Step one CHANGE the impeller and gear oil don't trust the seller . Change thermostat . Change fuel filter. Smell the oil BURT change it golden brown ? its ok / Practice backing up some where 50 yards/ MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS CHARGED. You don't want to drop in part your car and have a dead battery . TEST AT home.

Hi. Wayne, I want to take my boat in the Chesapeake Bay but all of my friends that have been boating for year's they are scared of the bay so I trying to get new friends in my life so we can go out on the bay and do some fishing because I don't buy a 24ft boat to be in storage.
Check the winds and wave heights before you go out and learn to know when it's too rough for you. Also be sure to have a way to know where the shallow water is, look out for crab pots - and you'll be fine. My old 19 ft boat that I used for this video has been in the bay many times!

It depends on where you live/boat. Where I am anyone on a motorized boat who was born after 1971 needs to have taken a course.

Yeah no. No brakes is not the correct way to describe it. My speedboat slows so quickly I have to be careful not to put passengers through the windscreen. And the "drifting to the right" is called prop walk. Ugg.
This video was made for new boaters. The "no brakes" aspect refers to the feeling of helplessness a new boater can have at a marina or boat ramp because the boat is almost always moving (drifting, or needing to be put in gear to reverse direction) which is very different from a car. When people are learning how to drive a car, it can stay in one spot because it has brakes. If you were to describe 'prop walk' to a new boater, what would you say the effects of it are?
