Thank you very much sir, I just bought my first bass boat (first boat capable of over 3 mph, really) a 1988 bass tracker 1800 fs tournament with 150hp mercury blackmax. I am learning alot from friends and family but i have been watching alot of the videos you have on here, so much great information, thank you again for taking the time to do this!
Just bought my first bass boat a few months ago. I got a bass tracker 190tx with a 90hp mercury optimax and experienced that walking you were talking about. I will apply what I have learned from you with the trim. Thank you.
I'm in the market to buy my FIRST bassing boat!! As in my college days, I am relearning the IMPORTANCE of the adage: "Education teaches us that the more ya know, the more one becomes aware of the things we DO NOT know!" I had to DIG through many of your videos, Mr. Crews, before I could find THESE videos which have been MOST HELPFUL. THANK YOU for your dedication and willingness to provide some much needed tutoring and instruction! MANY THANKS!
You’re awesome John, I’m glad to be pulling for you as a fellow Virginian. Thanks for all the great stuff!! Hope to see you on smith mountain lake soon!!
Very informative video. I've been driving bass boats for about a year and would love to see this kind of information on driving in bad weather on a large body of water. Thanks again.
Great vid man. I bet a bunch of people would want to see how to run at blast off and running over wakes at high speed. Even how to pass other anglers at high speeds. Good luck in 2020 buddy!
Great explanation John! I've always heard horror stories about turning in Basscats and how they have the potential to spin out. You explained it very well and even showed that turning. Preciate that man!!
excellent vid john just bought my first bass boat phoenix 920 pro xp will be a great help waiting for its arrival all the way down under in Fremantle WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Very helpful!! My first bass boat was a champion and she turned great. My first time test driving a triton and I power slid it little scary! I need to learn the tilt and trim
THANK YOU SIR!! you answered a question that i did not know i had... every now and then when turning at speed my boat would start to slid and i had no idea why... Thanks again.. You may have just saved a life or Two..
Great info John. I have always wondered if it was just the way MY boat was or all bass boats slid on turns. You can bet I will be using my trim more effectively this year on turns. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I’m brand new to boating. My 7 year old joined the fishing team at school, so I went and bought a new boat. It does have hydraulic steering and it’s very difficult to turn left at speed. I called the dealership and they said that’s normal. It doesn’t feel normal. Any advice on that for a newbie?
Great video. Don't know if you have any barge traffic but it would be nice to see a video of boating around barge traffic. The dangers and safety of being around it
I wish I would've had this for last week on the water. I just got a skeeter zx185c with a 175 yamaha and that boat scoots. This is my first fast boat and I'm having to get used to the trim. Last week I was maybe halfway trimmed up and going 45 mph and it started to loose bite in the turn like you were saying. From everything I've learned running this boat recently if anything starts to happen just trim down. I did and went away like you said but definitely scared me a little bit. I think the skeeters have a lot more bow lift that other brands anyway so it's getting a lot of getting used to. I trim that thing up until I get uncomfortable lol (no rooster tail on mine though with the way the jack plate is set up) it's crazy compared to rangers that I've been in that ride completely flat always.
I learned a while back if you drop the trim and the throttle at the same time, you can learn the timing on your boat to when it crests the hole and keep trimming down as you yank the steering all the way to a direction, bottom out the trim as you slam back into the throttle except now your facing the opposite direction and your co angler is probably in another zip code by the time you leave your hole shot.
Pretty new bass boat owner and definitely learned a couple things. Subscriber and watch all your vids. You mentioned chine walking and would love to see a vid on combating/dealing with chine walking. Happened to me once a couple months back, the pucker factor was high. Have read up on it but haven't found any good vids on it. Live in Roanoke and am out on SML all the time, maybe I'll run into you sometime.
I’d love to see a video of chine walking as well! Just bought a 2000 p3 with a 200hp Mercury pro xs..not use to something with this much power, considering my old boat had a 90hp Johnson! Just subscribed and looking foward to some more videos!
New bass boat owner here with maybe a dumb question. My manual says to avoid trimming really far down because it can cause plowing and that it could increase spinouts. I think I hear you saying the opposite. Could you explain what they mean? I typically only run my boat at 35mph currently, at that speed do I even have to worry about it? Thanks
@@JohnCrews your videos have been a tremendous help, and give me more confidence on the water. The fact that you take the time to respond to questions on videos you posted a year ago say alot about you as a person. Greatly appreciate it!
So I'll try to keep this short. I have a 86 aluminum boat with a 60 2stroke and I run down the creek alot with fast sweeping turns and 180 hairpins (with stumps and trees 10 feet from each side). Would it be best if I just trim it all the way down and leave it. I don't need the extra trim up speed. 35 through it is kinda sketchy. Had some close encounters with MISTRIMMING and was a couple feet from a tree due to blowing out/sliding. I haven't mastered trimming and Wondering if staying trimmed down would help keep the boat "sticking" to the path
Looks like you took out of Moormans? Been awhile since I've launched from there, but i do remember why i stay near Hales Ford Bridge area ( less trash in the water)
This video was very helpful and informative. I would like to have seen the trim gauge to have a better idea of exactly how far trimmed down you are going through the turns.
On my boat I basically glance back at my motor and trim it til it looks level and my boat planes and turns perfect but all boats are different knowing your boat is the key good video
I have new hydraulic steering on my bass boat, but when I'm running on pad at 70+mph my steering has too much play and that makes it difficult to do correction steering to stop the chine walk. Do u know of a way for me to tighten the steering and make it more responsive?
Good video and I hate to be picky but about 2 minutes in........... When you turn your steering wheel to the starboard side, your motor turns to the port side (opposite direction). Then motor thrust to the port side pushes rear of boat so bow goes to the starboard. None of this really matters in the end because if you turn wheel to right, boat goes to the right. Lol.
I'm going to be " that guy " even though this was a very informative video. You failed to make the most important step and that is to always attach the kill switch lanyard cord especially if you know that you are going to be going fast or in an area where you will be making turns and if there are other boats in the water. Years ago I was fishing a lake in Northern Indiana and forgot to hook up and heading to the ramp another boat came in front of me and threw a huge wake that rocked my boat and threw me out in a split second. I am lucky to be alive as the boat was circling towards me. I wish all videos that explain boating would include the importance of the lanyard .Peace
John Crews lol sorry but I spent 22 years in the USAF working on airplanes so I couldn’t help myself. Really like ur videos so keep doing ur thing please and more orange hats!!!!
@@JohnCrews Flaps aid in increasing lift at low speeds. Simplified: Rudder will yaw left and right similar to turning your outboard. Ailerons roll the aircraft. Elevators pitch the nose up and down.
Life jacket zippers are not made to withstand impacts if thrown from a boat. If you are going to do instructional videos, please do it with all the best safety in mind. People watch you and other anglers run around on your personal youtube videos with poor safety and they think it is OK. Trust me, after you lose a brother or friend, you will change your mind.
@@JohnCrews thanks for your time. I lost a brother in a boating accident and I always try to remind everyone that it is the most important part of boating. It was no fun waiting for a dive team to find him. Be safe and have a great year.
Excellent instruction.
These 101 videos are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to make some great basics vids.
This helped me. I just got a bass boat and did not know about the relation of trim to turning. Thanks!

have you done a video about hydraulic lift height adjustment while running ? thanks! liked the video !

Do you trim the little tiller style motors by hand while steering?
You have to do that when they are out of gear.

I think I hear you saying the opposite. Could you explain what they mean? I typically only run my boat at 35mph currently, at that speed do I even have to worry about it? Thanks
At top speed, if you trim down and cut the wheel hard, you could induce the boat to spin out. At slower speeds, trimming down to turn is preferred

Don’t forget to include using the lanyard on your wrist for emergency shut off in case the boat throws the driver off.
coy sutherland Oh yes. I started with that on the bass boat driving 101 video. Totally agree!
