Update: In Pixelmator Pro 3.3 and later, to finish drawing a path and close it, press Shift + Return on your keyboard. To finish drawing a path and keep it open, press the Return key.

it would be perfect if Pixelmator is able to import, export and edit AI. and EPS. archives and templates
Great stuff! But also hoping Pixelmator Pro’s vector tools will get a proper overhaul very soon. Right now it’s still not really usable for precise logo work etc where we need to rotate, mirror, step and repeat paths and shapes over a specified anchor point.
I came here to get more info on PXM paths. I’m glad that they’re there but when I cut out an object as I used to in PS it was much less precise when zooming in. I understand it’s a bitmap but PS allows for extremely fine vector tolerances which do matter when converting the vector shape to a mask. I hope the behaviour can be improved as I find PXM on the whole so much nicer to use than affinity.
I don't do much with vectors usually, but this guide shows a lot of different things you can do with just a few simple tricks! Thanks!

how do you create a circular or linear array? or mirror objects?
* if you've drawn an open path and want to close it: right click on the path then choose "make editable" THEN COMMAND click on the point, THEN right click and choose "start drawing"
In pixelmator pro, I drew a shape with a transparent background. I then drew another shape on top of it. How can I knock out or punch out the second shape so that the shape creates a transparent area on the initial shape?

While we can't promise anything specific, we'll do our best to work on some new vector design tutorials in the future. 🙏 In the meantime, it might be worth checking out other creators on TH-cam for additional content on vector graphics.
is there still no scissor tool to cut a shape? this is a tool ive used for years in "other" apps
@2:48, you say... "To finish your path and close it, click the very first point, or press the return key." Maybe this video is outdated, and this has been changed, but when I press the return key, it does not close the path; It simply ends the path, leaving points 3 and 1 open. Clicking the first point does close the path as you said, but maybe you could add an **UPDATE** to the description of this video for any future users who might be confused. This is especially true since Adobe Illustrator does not have this "close path w/ return key' feature.
Hey Michael. Thanks for pointing this out. The Pixelmator Pro 3.3 update changed this behavior. Right now, to finish drawing a path and close it, you'd have to press the Shift + Return keys on your keyboard. And, to leave it open, press Return.
is it possible to convert png files to vector?
I've had some issues exporting to SVG files as fonts seem to change and lines change thickness, so I'd be interested in a video covering how to export images/logos which include text to SVG
The best way to keep text looking the same as it does in the original project file is by converting it into a vector shape. You can do so by Control-clicking the text layer in the Layers sidebar and choosing Convert into Shape. Hope that helps!

Is it possible to combine or merge two vector layers while keeping the result editable?
Yes! You'd first have to unite the two layers, then Control-click the united group in the Layers sidebar and choose Merge Shape Components.

this looks nothing like the app when I open it up. I started with a basic 8.5 x 11 paper size for image create and then there is only a few icons to the right with a paint brush, a plus sign, a gear and a share button. and then when you click on any of those icons, there is a very limited drop down menu with paint & erase, retouch, distort, etc. Can you please tell beginners how to even get to these tools??? I have a brand new ipad with a brand new pen and I just downloaded your app and again, it looks nothing like your tutorial shown here.
I went to your shortcut "where to find tools" but the pen icon doesn't exist. So these instructions do not work.
This is good to have, but keep in mind that the Pixlemator App itself is not Vector-based but Raser-based. So you’re going to end up with pixel drawings not vector.

Pixelmator Pro is, indeed, more of a raster-centric editor so it's designed to display all content, including vector layers, on a pixel grid. However, if you export your vector design to SVG (a vector file format) it will have all the regular vector image properties.
@@PixelmatorVideos ooooooohhhhhh, no wonder whenever I zoom into the vector drawings, it still shows pixelation which perplexed me for the longest time. I need to export it into SVG to ensure my drawing has vector properties with infinite resolution and no pixelation right?
So, Pixelmator pro does indeed do vector shapes and text and paths, but Pixelmator Pro shows you what the image will look like rasterized - this is because Pixelmator Pro is more of photo editing app and as the team said above is designed to display everything on a pixel grid. However if you take a vector shape, path or text and save that file as an SVG file, when you import that into another vector program like Inkscape, Affinity Designer, etc. it will show as a vector - aka no destruction or blurry edges.
I've just tested now this by making a two vector layer file in Pixelmator Pro - one an editable text layer and another with that text layer covered into a vector shape. I then exported the file as an SVG format and imported it into Affinity Designer 2 and also Inkscape, both layers are still vectorized and I can zoom in as much as want in either of those two programs and they have no destruction.

Pixelmator Pro is primarily a design tool and should function effectively for that purpose. Additionally, it can quickly open large documents, which might be really beneficial for spatial analysis.

What if I want a point to be smooth on one side, then sharp on the other?
Good question! You'd want to press and hold the Option key when adjusting one of the direction handles.

You're right, the plan is to update the tutorials eventually. But it's tricky because, as you've noticed yourself, there are quite a few of them and Pixelmator Pro is still getting new features, so keeping up is not an easy task. But I'm sure we'll get there!

Hey, you'd want to use a file format that supports vectors. Right now, you can export your designs to SVG and we're also looking to support more vector formats in the future.
@pixelmator if you can tell me if this is possible I would be very appreciative. I work with Paths every day, they are an essential tool for me and not being able to do this one seemingly minor thing is driving me crazy. Its hard to explain so I've recorded a video. All I want to do is draw a curved line. A simple curved line. I do not want a shape! Why is it IMPOSSIBLE to draw a curved line using Pixelmator Pro?
Rewatch tip #5 to understand open paths (and the pinned comment for the new keyboard shortcuts) and tip #6 to understand smooth points. Make sure Fill is toggled off and Stroke is toggled on. Practice adjusting the curvature of your smooth points. Tip #8 provides a shortcut to getting a perfect semicircle.

I've got one little issue: The ⌥-drag to seperate the line does what it wants: Sometimes it works as you explained, sometimes it's the other way around, and sometimes it doesn't work at all.
