They make two versions/variations of this lantern. I own the other version and like it MUCH better. It's called the Fire Maple Firefly lantern. The glass globe on the firefly version has defusers in it that make lighting up an area much more efficient and pleasing. The case the firefly version comes in is also superior. It has a foam insert that keeps the globe secure. It also comes with a canvas cover sleeve for the butane bottle.
Thank for pointing this out
I'll use my Coleman propane Lantern. I have one that's single mantle it produces heat and a lot more light
@Kaufeetimevideo glad I'm not the only one who sees no advantage over a mantle style. As far as dual fuel.. I always considered butane a cook gas, not lighting. When I'm in the truck, weight doesn't matter and if I'm canoeing, I'm taking a flashlight, couple candles and glowsticks, one can of cook gas for a micro stove, not wasting space and weight on a lantern.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Fire Maple lantern! It sounds like the Firefly version has some great features that make it more efficient and pleasing to use. I appreciate the detailed description of the lantern and its case. By the way, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile powerhouse with massive capacity and fast recharging capabilities. It could be a great addition to your outdoor gear collection.
That's crazy on the different flame heights
Propane is at least 3 times the pressure as isobutane at the same temperature. Hence, more gas output when the valve is wide open. Also why propane works better at altitude or in the cold.
It’s under more pressure and works better at cold weather because it’s evaporation point is much colder than butane. Under 20°, butane doesn’t readily vaporize, hence inverted butane adapters for stoves.
😂
I bought one a month ago after watching Luke use it in another video. Used it for the first time last night. Used it along side two Feuerhand oil lanterns. I kept the flame well within the glass globe and it was impressive. 35 degrees and it put out way more light than a UCO candle but less than the oil lanterns. I was very impressed with the performance. Got it for the under $30 dollar price. I have the Fire Maple Saturn stove as well based on watching another of Luke’s videos. Absolutely love it. So far Fire Maple products have been superb.
I had ordered this a few days ago and was surprised you hadn't reviewed it yet, so was pleasantly surprised to see this video pop up. Since you make fair reviews, I'm glad to know I picked it up, since I tend to do winter camping in Quinzhees and was looking for something to light and heat a bit. Keep doing the great work, and Happy New Year!
Luke I just spent the last few minutes of 2023 and the first few of 2024 with u my brother 😅 happy New Year.
I like this and this is your funniest video especially when you light it with the propane and your reaction was priceless 😂
The flame is so high you could probably roast marshmallows over the flame🤔😏😂jk but try cooking a hot dog on a stick😂
Great overall review but we did not see it operating in the dark, or inside a tent in the dark.
I came here just to make the same comment. What kind of lantern review doesn't show any night footage? Otherwise a good review.
It seems impracticable for backpacking. Glamping it would work well.
I purchased the Snow Peak lantern based on your review of that product. I tried it with a propane adapter and it worked great on a 1 lb canister. But I also considered this Firemaple lantern and almost bought it instead. It looks like the Firemaple has some great features and may be cheaper, something to consider. Great review and I'm glad you tested it on both fuel sources.
Open flame in a tent: I’ll stick with my solar lantern with three brightness settings, less weight, Ann 1000 % safer
Really glad you showed it on propane because it's important for people to see how quick is shoots up after lit. I have seen people be negligent and stand over things when lighting them, especially people I've hung out with that are new to using camp stoves. It would be so dangerous if you didn't expect a large flame, and stood over top when lighting it, you'd seriously injure yourself. Great unintended reminder to stand to the side of flame when lighting your stove
I have this product. I have seen it used in other videos, liked it, and purchased. It does not disappoint! Awesome lantern :)
I think I’m gonna get me one. I like the mood it sets, kinda like a candle. Plus the heat output. Great video, Luke.
This "lantern" is a solution looking for a problem. If you want an open flame light source use a candle. Cheaper, lighter and the glass won't break. If I'm using a gas as a fuel I'll use a mantle lantern. I have one as small as this unit. And I have candles.
Exactly and Amen! I would not waste $5 on this "lantern" product, let alone $40 + the price of a gas canister.
I would take a more energy dense liquid fuel in a mantle lantern or catalytic heater than the item in the video. It's the 21st century... the problem isn't that it doesn't come with a striker/ignitor... the problem is that the device is called a lantern yet produces so little useable light for the energy spent! I have ethanol alcohol vapor lamps that pressurize themselves, use a mantle and made in the 1920's that are safer, more energy efficient and burn much brighter and as long as that $40 modern fire hazardbeing called a lantern. A glamper camper is the last person who should be using something with an open blowtorch flame shooting out of it while getting close enough to it to roast a marshmallow.
Me too, but it’s nice to have options.
Wishing you two a great 2024 with lots of safe happy travels and camping and hikes.
Just got one for Christmas! Looking forward to using it for truck camping and with the travel trailer. There's nothing more relaxing than an open flame! Happy New Year!
I've been here a LONG time and I've never heard "holllllly sh!t!"🤣🤣 Curses are usually muted due to avoiding being throttled....that was hilarious haha. It looks like a cool lantern, I personally love my oil converted UCO 3 candle lantern, with three flames it's actually a heater. Never had any issues with it other than bulkiness, but it's no worse than carrying fuel cannisters.
Nice lantern but would be concerned with fire hazard inside a tent or vehicle. Hot globe could also ignite materials. No tip over protection which is a strong negative for me. Caution also around small children or pets
I would use it more as something to keep everything in the tent at a decent temp so youre not climbing into a cold bag.
My friend I picked up one of those lanterns excellent advice. Thank you for your review.👍🏽
I cut the package foam and made an insulated no rattle protector to go inside the plastic case. I alsocut a small piece of heat shrink tubing to go on the end of the cleaning wire, securing it with a drop of super glue.
Another great review
You covered all the bases
I’m ordering me one now
Thanks for your diligent reviews
Hey Luke, just want to say Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for your efforts to inform and educate!
I’ve actually got this one. And the adapter. Yes, the flame is crazy and my main thing is I am 1000% going to break the glass globe. Hadn’t hooked up to propane yet.
I’m using the same since a couple of months, love it. Mostly my flame is adjusted like a flame of a candle....no issues till now, using both types of canister and the adapter. Regards from Germany!
Would have liked to see it in the dark as to how much light it actually gives off. Can't think it gives off much. Looks dangerous, too--to have an open flame like that in a tent. For me, I'll stick with a rechargeable lamp/lantern. Good, thorough review, though.
Post-LED, gas lanterns are for ambiance, not practicality.
He's used it in a couple of his recent videos so you can get an idea of how it works. : )
A few night clips of the lantern would have been interesting and useful.
Give me a Good Old Feuerhand Hurricane lantern any day of the week:)
Lantern usage in actual use case.. when its dark, would have been helpful
Night? Then he wouldn’t have been able to wear his hypercool sunglasses.
I like it but...a candle lantern is more of an ambient soothing mood type of light, but the cheap LED super safe and efficient lamps are fine... not worrying about a fire... yeah...
UCO lanterns are awesome!
Hi Luke, I purchased the lantern in the UK, it didn’t come with the nice packaging like yours, but in the plastic case in a box. But inside the plastic tube , the lantern was wrapped in bubble wrap. I’ve kept the bubble wrap so it doesn’t rattle around in the plastic tube. I’ve not used it yet, thanks for the review 😊
Almost empty canisters aren’t a thing if you buy a transfer adaptor, keep a small canister, only buy the huge ones for less overall money and transfer fuel into the small canister.
Absolutely.
I’m surprised Luke hasn’t seen/used one by now.
When canisters were a couple bucks it didn't matter, but now the refiller adapters are godsends,
@@OntarioBearHunter was at Canadian Tire.... I laugh and shake my head when they want $11 for a 1lb green propane. I bought a hose set off Amazon. So I can fill the 1lbs from a 20lbs at half the price.
BUWHAHA! "Holy *Bleep*!" - Best reaction I've ever seen from you Luke! I busted out laughing. That thing is crazy for sure. I think I'll stick with my little UCO candle lantern. It's a nice gas lantern, regardless.
I have one of the original orange ones ,, no big deal to me on the color as it’s a copper colored finish and I’m a plumber Absolutely love mine for the use of ambient light and finishing off those partial iso canisters ,,,, speaking of which I found a thermacell that attaches to iso canisters also ,, you should look into those and do your review on them
But a flame may set your tent and your tarpaulin on fire where as a rechargeable light source will not
I have had it for about 5 months. Not a huge fan. My cleaning needle was missing upon receipt. It doesnt put out much light to me. Imagine having candle light to light up your surroundings. Rechargable led puts out much more light.
Hppy new year, that is a neat product, the things we would not know without your help!!!!
I have a similar off brand Amazon special that works like that without the glass vent hole. It vents and can be lite from the bottom. It doesn't give off much light, but at least it's smaller than this one.
Bonne année à toi et tes proches !!! 🎉
I also wear glasses in the dark, subscribed!!
Hey Luke, great review, thanks. Wow, 16 oz propane tank(1 lb) is 453.59 grams at 1 gram/hour that’s like 453 hours, that’s insane! That’s like almost 19 days if I’m correct and manufacture is right on the consumption. Maybe not a bad idea for a survival situation in a car or tent. Happy New Year to you, the family and your viewers. S&H…🇺🇸
With those numbers imagine a 20 lbs propane tank. It would have 1 year of run time none stop.
When we were young and camping. My dad bought a Tilly light. Paraffin in the tank and mentholated spirits to start it. My mum Hated my dad started setting the light off in the tent. The old Tilly light with a mantel, are a great light. Ok it’s not for backpacking. But you can’t beat a Tilly light. 👍❤️🔥💗❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I don’t have that lantern, but one that is similar. I use it when my gas canisters are low to use the gas up. That’s a nice one. Happy New Year Luke!! ❤❤🎉🎉❤❤
Last time I saw a flame like that, I was an iron worker…😅
Having an open flame inside your tent and/or car... Brilliant idea.
Wishing you ,susy and all the family a very happy healthy new year from your Irish friends 🇮🇪
It would be nice to get some measured fuel consumption figures at a couple different flame heights. The only one I’ve been able to find said 4gr/hr for a one inch flame. My guess is the higher flame most shown in the video was more. Wouldn’t want people burning up their fuel thinking it was barely using any.
I got one for Father’s Day 2024. As to the rattle shove the user’s manual in the case.
Some stick on foam on the inside of the case would help with the rattle and possibly help protect the glass.
I have one of these but under a different name. The brand name is Robens. I have had the flame of a similar height to what you had but I had a Coleman Butane/Propane bottle connected and not a propane bottle. I do like using the lantern for camping in the evenings. You do give some good information about the product you have.
I just ordered this in the color you don't like, because I liked it lol 😆
Great for cigar smokers!
This guy cracks me up. Funniest site on TH-cam.
I ordered one. My lantern was inside the plastic case slid in a small cardboard box that it just fit. That small box was shoved into a bubble mailer. It was not packaged the way you show it. I was a bit disappointed. I supposed they do it that way now to save money.
Propane sounded like a jet engine
Great video..thanks...freedom for all people..
I’ve watched this channel for years and I can safely say I that this is the first time I’ve heard him swear lol
I bought one last year. I like mine.
It was worth watching this review for Lukes reaction @ 4:19
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother and everyone Happy New Year everyone
Thank you for reviewing this. I have been getting spammed by ads for these for almost a month :) was wondering if it was just an unsafe gimmick or if it could have a valid use.
The Propane Flame is bigger than Lukey Boy himself 🤣🤣🤣
I was waiting for this review.
Happy New Year to you Luke. My question is, which one do you prefer and why, Soto or this FireMaple lantern ? Dave & The Girls
I watch your videos when you use the lather for most of your hiking trip! Mr Luke ☕ ☕
I have it and didn’t used that much so far and for the case i left the lantern in the bubble wrap that it came from !
What I don't understand is why the manufacturers have gone to this decorative style lantern over the normal globe lantern that generally takes mantles. The other style puts out so much more light compared to this candle flame. Not only does it put out less light, it's more susceptible to damage and larger than the old style.
I love all six of my Coleman lanterns, but mantles are annoying to replace when they break, and they will if they bang around in a backpack. This is a lantern for people that are already using Isobutane in their stoves. As far as being fragile, they both are 🤷♂️.
Nothing like a lantern test in broad daylight 😂
Hi Luke! Thanks for your review! You are my "go to" for gear reviews. Does this lantern have a tip over safety shut off?
Just ordered on amazon and with 20% off voucher it was £20 and a few pence here in the uk
Brs 3000t also has a candle mode. If you turn it on a littlebit you can get an inch of yellow flame.
Call me old school, but I prefer a candle. I like my UCO.
I wonder what would happen if you tied a mantle in it? Is there a lip enough to tie it? Worth trying.
I'm going to purchase one.
Thanks Luke!
I prefer the Primus/Silva one and the main reason is its much warmer.
FIRE!!! Fire good!!!
Lucky they produced this lamp in that emerald Green colour
Happy New Year.
Great video as usual, you mentioned using up the last bit of fuel in your canister. The wife bought me a Flipfuel for Christmas, supose to be able to transfer fuel from on can to another via temperature differences through the mechanism. I havnt played with it yet but might make a good reveiw video, I think they are only like 30 bucks.
Mine didn’t come in a nice box like that. It came in a smaller box with bubble wrap around the glass. I kept the bubble wrap and it doesn’t rattle.
Happy New Year 2024!
Luke I hope you and Susie had a great new year please do a trip with you both together
Inside the cap part of the unit , run a 1/4 strip of teflon tape, you can mold it flat to fit. Plus teflon tape is a high heat resistant.
Semper fi
I like the flamethrower mode.
i really like this lamp
Those igniters usually crap out before the valve does. They're ok but I'd never go camping without a Mini-Bic lighter back-up.
I'm going to order a replacement glass globe now, maybe two
If Time Permits... Could you place lantern and canister on your scale and burn for an hour to see the weight loss in fuel? Maybe flame just to the top of the globe for reference... Curious how it performs to replace my Coleman. Thanks😁 Guess it's cheap enough to just roll the dice, looks like a solid addition
Someone should track your reviews release time with Amazon purchases of that reviewed product. Because I just watched your review and immediately bought that lantern and adapter for it based on your review after being on the fence of purchasing it for a few months.
Built in ignitors are redundant and add weight, one on your stove, one on your lantern, plus you might want to start a campfire, and a piezo ignition won't work in that situation. Two Mini Bic lighters is all I ever carry, summer through winter, for an ignition source. In summer I carry a USB chargeable headlamp and a small pinch light as a backup. One of these lanterns might be useful in cold weather, but I use a liquid fuel stove then. For shoulder seasons it might be fine for short hikes to add a little warmth, otherwise, with isobutane fuel, it wouldn't work so well below 20F, and propane requires that heavy canister. A candle lantern might be a better heat/light source. Candles make good fire starters, too.
Some people are just going to HAVE to own one, though. It's all good. For light plus heat, I use a mini hurricane lantern from Wal-Mart that uses very little kerosene, but smells pretty bad, meaning that you're much less likely to drift off to sleep, leaving it on accidentally.
ANY flame needs added ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Thanks, Luke.
I'll stick with my Coleman lumiere. I already have it and it works fine.
Good one Luke, how bout a cup of boiling water for coffee setting on the top. Just a thought.
HI LUKE 👋
I GOTTEN MINE FOR CAMPING 🏕 BUT ALSO FOR POWER OUTAGES . STILL HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AROUND LITTLE ONES & PETS WITH TAILS TOO ! THANK YOU 😊 🙏 WILL HAVE TO CHECK INTO THE EXTRA PIECE FOR PROPANE TOO . BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED ❤ GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏
Good true video!
With the hole in the bottom of the mantle, you could most likely boil water on top of mantle.
I'd be real careful about using something like that inside a tent or a car, if it's capable of shooting an 8 inch long flame jet out of it. Then of course there's always the danger of CO buildup. If it were me, I'd stick to an LED lantern.
Hi Luke~ TY for the great review. I’ve looked all over for the torch you used to light this lantern, and I cannot find it. Can you educate me on what torch that is? Thank you in advance! your channel is awesome!
He did a review on it a short time ago. We bought it, and LOVE it!
Very Interesting
I absolutely love mine. Have had it for a while since they 1st came out. Unfortunately It's the orange one but doesn't bother me that much but I do like the black much better.
Personally I'm glad it doesn't have a built in igniter as half the time they don't work properly.
I've been waiting on you to do a review on this just to hear your thoughts on it as well. I use it all the time sitting on the porch at night and camping. And I do the same thing you mentioned and use it with all my "empty" canisters.
Given how hit and miss igniters have been in your previous videos, I dont see the lack of one as a con.
I wish this had a reflective shield or some option to block the light on a side or have directional light. We used Coleman lanterns when night fishing and would use foil on the side facing us , otherwise we couldn't see our line.
