Sensor Glow in Astro Cameras...how to fix it

  • Here i show you how to fix starbursts/ amp glow/ electroluminescent glows in astro cameras.
A lot of modern CMOS cameras suffer with these characteristic glows, it doesnt mean they are rubbish or less high quality...in fact it is often because they are so sensitive!
I use astro pixel processor to stack and calibrate my frames, i find it handles glow much better than Pixinsight and Deep sky stacker

Really wish I made more progress with APP but my trial ran out. I will get it in time, but for the moment I limit my exposure time to two minutes. Another great video and even though I wanted to use the previous advice using adaptive pedestal I have still gained more some more knowledge about APP. Regarding glow (sodium not amp) I drove back from Welshpool to Suffolk and stopped on the toll services. Looked up at the light pollution and to say I respect you or anyone getting those images is an understatement. 10k subs soon Stace the UKs Astrobackyard. :)

Just ordered myself a QHY174 instead of the discontinued ZWO counterpart with the same sensor. I chose the former for a number of reasons but among them was the presence of a hardware based anti-amp glow function. Of course I still plan to utilizing desks and flats regardless of that (untested) fact.
Informative video and cool tee shirt.

Thank you, I’ve been going crazy trying to get rid of my amp glow with my Altair 183c Tec cooled. Can’t wait to try your method. Great channel!

I like your video's because you go to the effort of explaining why and how.
For me, a very useful video, thank you.

I'm just about to get my first dedicated astro camera (183 mc pro cooled) and I had heard of amp glow, hopefully i can calibrate it out in Pixinsight.

Thank you very much, this video is very timely. Shot several hours worth of lights on M33 about a week and a half ago and upon stacking with DSS found the telltale starburst. It nearly matched your 294 image perfectly. I'm shooting with a 294MC Pro so this is clearly the problem. I'll have to download the trial version.

ah fingers crossed it helps you to get your frames calibrated! these star bursts can be super annoying!

Thanks for the AAP amp glow tip. I have a zwo183mc with amp glow at the bottom and the starburst on the right side that increases with longer exposures. And I have found it to be worst with NB filters but not so bad without filters. Very frustrating to have that on a dedicated astrophotography camera. Anyway, Cheers!

Cool. I will try to get hold of this programme. Pixinsight is expensive and complicated to use but still an awesome programme.

very interesting camera information that I needed before jumping in and buying a TEC camera. 😎 Thank you. What about this camera? $800 SVBONY SV405CC Telescope Camera, TEC Cooled 11.7 MP CMOS Color Astronomy Camera with USB3.0 AR Coating Optical Glass, for Deep Space Astrophotography, Compatible with Windows Linux Mac OS Chrome OS

One thing is true, amp glow is not getting fixed in Pixinsight. I just tried yesterday. I have to see this APP. I am staying away so far, but looks like it has a benefit.

I calibrate my files in Pixinsight and the amp glow get removed perfectly, and I'm using a ZWO294 which suffer from sever glow, it's strange that fails.

Great video Stace! Just wondering, is the amount of amp glow a direct result of the pixel count and density on a sensor when doing longer exposures? Still learning this stuff so appreciate any help.

    • @AstroStace

This kind of sensor glow (not amp glow) per se comes from components on the sensor die emitting near infrared light. The longer the exposure the more light is emitted and the more of it that the sensor picks up

when it comes to calibrations of your data . APP wins hands down. , once Mabula comes out with the newer version, (0.75) it will be even more powerful..
