    Really fun to watch. I think something you could have done for the sky is potentially paint some rocks fading into the background to blend the flat sky with the rocks more? I'm not sure if that effect would have worked particularly well but it's an idea. Overall it gives me 80s b-movie fantasy vibes, where some guy had to work with what he had to make a cool movie. Very charming.

    I think as an alien planet the sky might be a little different so maybe you could add a little purple to the lowest part seen. I love the tension in the piece and the narration was excellent!

    Turned out great! Love the rock walls, very realistic. The effect of the white spray paint on the minion is awesome, he definitely fades into the background. The paint on the knight is also excellent.
    As for the glue gun, another idea from a woodturner is to melt the glue sticks in an electric frying pan. Remelts pretty quick when turned on and you can paint the glue on your surfaces.
    Anyway, awesome diorama.

    Offhand, I'd say your experiment was a resounding success! I like how your diorama combines the old techniques of plaster scenery with state-of-the-art 3 Printing.

    The white effect around the sky on the rocks looks amazing! The only thing I could think is to make the sky darker next time, as your eye tends to draw towards lighter colors.

    You might try something I saw on a channel that uses a lot of hot glue to make floral crafts, more than even a heavy duty gun could handle. He put a Package of glue in a metal pan with a candle under it used for chafing dishes (to keep food warm). Then he applied it with various sizes of popsicle sticks. Just until or better than, getting the heavy duty gun, You Decide. A small electric crock pot would work too. As long as you remember to turn it off! I Love Your Work!💕

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, never heard of that before, worth a try next time if I haven't got around to getting a larger gun which is very possible.

  • @apathtrampledbydeer8446

    You could also cast small parts of rock face and then glue it together maybe that would make it easier to get the composition the way you want instead of casting the wholewall in one piece, maybe it is more finicky though. Maybe the sky in the background could have had some gradient to make it less uniform.
    Great use of perspective with that smaller guy in the back, and the use of a light dusting to simulate a haze is great.
    Your figure painting skills are also top-notch!
    Looking forward to see the nex one.

    I'm very impressed with the rocks and thrilled to learn a new technique to try out so thank you. My technique uses large amounts of crinkled foil to do rocks. This can allow you to fill a space with rock shapes so when you add the plaster it has done a lot of the work for you. I imagine this combined with your presented style will enrich the rockiness. Sky....yeah a tough one to paint but I use a pallette knife and thick oil paints. The result will be deliciously textured as I mix in many shades of blue and white in short horrizontal sweeps. The result will look like a cloudy sky and add a lot of interest. Great work.

      Thanks for the info, the one thing that bothers me about the tinfoil method is ending up with a smooth finish, is there a way to stop that?

    Hi Raymond, Plaster works good for making terrains but it’s hard to work with when hardened. It’s also very heavy and fragile.
    I use Sculptamold now instead of plaster, but you can also use cheaper paper pulp and add Mod Podge to make it stronger. It’s very easy to work with. Only to simulate rocks I use rubber rock molds with plaster.
    👍

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the plan is to slowly try all the various methods I can find and sculptamold plus cast plaster rocks are on the list.

  • @tomtruesdale6901

    Very well done. Maybe in order to narrow the valley you could build the two side walls with half of the valley floor attached and then join them on the base and finish the valley floor. Also, I have seen model builders use large pieces of tree bark as rocks with them layered on top of each other and once sealed with PVA/water and painted they look very much like rock layers. Overall you have a outstanding diorama.

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was really torn between doing it in one piece or separate halves. I will give the bark technique a go at some point

  • @dirtywhitellama
    @dirtywhitellama ปีที่แล้ว

    I think what people often do in these cases is texture each wall separately (flat), then attach them all at the end, which might help if trying to make an even narrower space. Obviously this takes some measurement, planning, and touch up of the seams but it might still outweigh trying to do it all assembled!

    • @dirtywhitellama
      @dirtywhitellama ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, layering in some flat mountain or rock shapes into the sky area might have helped a lot. Having the world just end at a flat blue sky is not a common view. (Plus the fading effect on the rocks happens in the sky itself too - it's far bluer straight up than at the horizon)

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem with the backdrop is that the sky is touching the ground. You might try painting the walls of the canyon extending into the background. Or you could have carved a sharp turn from the side where she was able to break from her pursuers line of sight just long enough to nestle herself in her corner before they careen around after her. This vision would have allowed you to plaster the backdrop as well. You could have even tucked the minion into the wall a bit as if he were just rounding the corner himself, adding a tad more depth.

    • @jasonblackshear6823
      @jasonblackshear6823 ปีที่แล้ว

      All constructive criticism, mind you. It is an intense piece I can almost hear her struggling to stifle her panting. And I very much like how you described your process of thought for the painting. This is definitely a suitable substitute for musical accompaniment for the time lapse.

    Great build! That rock texture looked very good, but there's easier (and less heavy and expensive) ways. A clear sky is tough to get right with brushes, even on a perfect surface, so maybe a printed image would have been more convincing; but on camera it looked fine.

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, lots of different ways of doing rock, eventually I intend to give them all a go. I did consider a photo, not sure why I didn't in the end.

    18:17 Over all it looks fantastic, the mood is set and I can feel the danger and anticipation of the strike from the knight. I would suggest instead of doing a whole 'sky' in the back, you have a little horizon. nothing fancy blurry colors to suggest more rocky area would work just fine. Though you could make the argument that this is HIGH up.

    Instead of working the plaster on an upright side wall, turn the box on its side design that you are working on the flat and plaster won’t run down.

      Probably wasn't obvious but I had it at 45 degrees, need some angle so the debris falls away.

    have you seen the tin foil method of making rocks?
    all you need to do is scrunch up the foil and then carefully form it into a flat-ish bowl, then you pour in your P of P (which can be pre-coloured). after its set you can remove your rocks and glue them to your diorama using a bit more P of P to fill in any gaps.

    • @dodgydioramas
      @dodgydioramas  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen it and I will give it a go at some point, I want to try every method eventually.

    This came out AWESOME!!
    The Terrain Tutor has a great tutorial on making rock faces using plaster and tinfoil. It comes out looking great. You can also them make smaller thicker ones for individual boulders etc.. NerdForge uses this tenique in her builds and it comes out looking 👍 Can't wait to see what you come up with next!
