I absolutely loved eating pancakes at Sambo's! I grew up in the Bay Area, and whenever traveling to LA, we would stop there. The original Sambo's "theme" story was of an Indian boy in the jungle who was being chased by a tiger. He ran around a tree until the tiger turned to butter. It wasn't until they franchised the restaurant that OTHER owners began adopting the Black Sambo motif. I believe this is why they are all closed but the original restaurant still remains. Thanks for showing us that it is still there!
My Uncle was one of the builders of the Madonna Inn, sadly he fell from the roof and almost died, he is sill alive today and tells that story, it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up...

Such a great vlog, so much history packed into it! When I was in Kindergarten (1968) I was at the nextdoor neighbor's house and we watched a movie called, The Island of the Blue Dolphins. It was such a good movie & always stuck in my memory. I saw it again around the 8th grade, I have been looking for it ever since to buy it, I can't find it! I found the book about 5 years ago & really enjoyed it, same title. It's more a book for teens, but it was good. Anyway, one day at the library I looked into the story on Google, it's this lady that you told us about at the beginning of your vlog. You can find bits of the movie on TH-cam, but not the whole movie. I think if they stayed following the book, a great movie could be made today about her, but movie makers today would giver her some super power and stray far from the story. We had a Sambos growing up where we lived, and went quite often. The food was always yummy and (sad to say) we played with our masks and coloring place mat. It turned into a different coffee shop, than under many names after that! Thanks, Jordan, you stirred up a lot of old memories for me today! 🌼

Very interesting and sad about Juana Maria. I would never of thought that about vitamin enriched foods. Should of introduced them slowly and is wonderful she saw another side of life and enjoyed what she did see and experienced !

Wow, had no idea about the story of JuanaMarie, beautiful! I remember before (and during) when The Red Lion was being built right on that waterfront area, the locals were NOT happy of it going up, especially around marshland and on/near the bird habitat. Back then, SB wanted to keep things as pure as possible and limit the development there, who can blame them? They’ve done so-so in that regards, but it’s difficult in today’s “development madness” environment. Once again an awesome blog! So hard every time to drive south on 101 out of town, wondering “why do I have to leave?” 😂
So interesting. My first waitress job I was 17 and worked the breakfast shift at Sambo’s. Worked thru college and loved the job. Watched it decline and close after all the lawsuits. Lots of good memories.

Here in Springfield Mo it was bought and turned into Dennis’s Place which is a very popular bar/restaurant. I’ve seen a couple left in Oklahoma but we’re just waiting to be torn down.
yeah, you have the right by law to DECLINE the insurance and extra coverages that they upsell to you - and they cannot refuse to rent the car to to either, by law. Of course, this is if you have the state required auto protection. And, you are NOT required to purchase or have comprehensive upgrade coverage either. Many people do not know this and the rental car companies depend on customers not knowing this ... If you use your personal credit card (Visa or Mastercard and most American Express) to rent a car, they have a built in protection of insurance of rental cars, so you do not have to purchase it apart and above what your credit card benefit already provides. Contact or go online to see the benefit your credit card provides to confirm this.

I remember going to the Sambo's restaurants when I was a child, with my parents. I never thought of it as racist. I loved the art work. Up of the wall, the little boy, chased by the tiger, and finally the boy making tiger butter out of the tiger. Then you would get tiger butter on your pancakes and berry syrup. I didn't think the boy was anything but clever. Again, thank you for doing these trips with the stories of the area. They are wonderful.
Loved Fess Parker; still watch the re-runs of Davey Crocket & Daniel Boone ...wonder why he wasn't well liked:/ Think Reagan would have rather been there; he was born down the road from me here in IL. Happy B'day puppy!
My brain is full of random superfluous facts...like this one- the people of santa barabara were furious at Fess Parker because he wanted to team up with the Chumash Natives and develop a ginormous open space in Santa Ynez. PS- Eddie Matthews was a hunk!
