- Ugandan veterinarian and smallholder farmer Emma Naluyima practices a unique and highly effective blend of integrated farming. In this delightful talk, she explains how she does this on just one acre of land, or about four thousand square metres. In four different quarters, she cleverly manages to integrate the production of cows, pigs, chickens, fish, vegetables, fruits, and fodder, in a sustainable, circular production system that wastes nothing. To cap it all, with profits from the farm, she has managed to build, on the premises, a school that pays it forward by teaching the local children much-needed life skills. These include important lessons about what happens if we optimise every single bit of what little we might have.
Emma is known for being an innovative farmer with skills in veterinary, piggery, fishery, vegetables, training and capacity building. Her ingenuity has earned her several awards in her native Uganda, and globally. She holds a Masters of Health Services Research, and a BSc Veterinary Medicine, both from Makerere University in Uganda. She has collaborated with the University of Wisconsin, with students visiting her farm for training every year since 2014. Emma has served as Chairman of Red Cross Mbarara and has written several op-eds published in the Guardian, Mail and The East African. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Where is this lady's Nobel Peace prize? This kind of land management knowledge needs to be packaged and distributed as widely and as accessible as possible to reform not only Uganda but the world over.
We are running out of time.
I agree
In times like these we need convert our wasteful lawns and backyards to permaculture food forest gardens landscapes with perennial drought and heat tolerant plants to provide food year long for our family, friends and neighbors. It’s healthy and better for us mentality/physically and the environment. You will get your vitamins C from the food you grown and vitamin D from the sun. :)
@@Ded-Ede Well said!
Instead of wasting public funds on Big Brother Investment BBI here where to invest
Quite alot of authors have stuff on this
"When you lack, you think." Great Words of Inspiration
I Totally agree, we all should think out of the box ..
It is a very old saying: Necessity is the mother of invention.
Ooooh ! thats P.OW.E.R.F.U.L
Proudly Ugandan, visited Dr. Emma's farm in 2013 and she's got brilliant ideas
I would love to visit her farm.where exactly is it?
Where is it?
How wonderful that instead of just hoarding money for themselves they decided to invest in their community's future by building a school!
Indeed, indeed, their harvest will be an eternal blessing to their community and beyond.
This is the education children need the world over. Amazing woman.
This lady just blew my mind, with how much magic she worked with just an acre of land..
I also love the air she carries herself in as she speaks, she sounds like she's so happy, satisfied and committed with each new wonder she's uncovering to the audience.
My wife's been discouraging me from developing my 1 hacter piece of land. This lady has given me reason to listen to the voice inside me.
Your can make changes Go on "It's True tortoise 🐢 moves slowly but at the end he will reach his point and that is what all mater so keep on doing".
A whole hectare!
You're sitting on wealth
Develop that acre
She's just afraid you will ask her to help out with physical labor.🤣
"Whenever you lack, You think"
I love that
Yes, its definitely my motto. Improvise, pray and God will give you wisdom to make a way out of no way!
"Thinking" is the birth-child of Reason, and Reasoning the primordial form of The ALL (GOD). By Reason you gouge out the life around you.
Yes...this is a nugget!!
Ooh Lord! After watching this, i feel we live in different planets. What a brilliant mind. Nothing goes to waste!
Different planets. Yes! I believe that is the intent of the urbanization movement. Western world nor the United Nations encourage resourcefulness or small sustainable farming. We should perhaps ask ourselves why the manipulation to believe farming the way we do in North America is okay? Or why food should be produced on large farms?
She just empowered the whole world through a Ted Talk😂 Outstanding!!! Guess what my son is learning tomorrow 👍
Arabic the language of judgment day!🤣
Think wisely
@jeffrey Phillips - Farming! 👍
Farming ofcourse
I Love Her. Emma is truly a modern woman caring for the planet and her community. Thank you for sharing!
Very articulate, and a good voice to get the attention of the audience. She needs to be a lecturer in the university 🎓
My People!!! Thank you very inspiring... Africa needs more people like her ! With love from Kenya
😘
The whole world needs this. Personally I think small sustainable integrated organic farms are the future.
@@danielbtwd it should be the future. The reality is it will be big corporation farms and then homesteads
@@SteveMcFry well then expect a future of exploitation and poverty.
Remember that Uganda is a tropical rain country unlike Namibia where water and land tax are very expensive... I am not negative but we must be real.. how can u even talk of aquaculture when yr tapes are not running with water coz it was cut coz of outstanding payment... But now they will rather cut electricity for the same reason....
She's just straight to the point...no stories & much telling of self... just points.
OH MY GOODNESS! This lady got permaculture down to a science! 🥰💖❤💕
Hi 👋🏾 can I meet you
Definitely, she is an inspiration to our country. We have learned a lot from her.
And an art!
That was a whole class on agriculture! Very well presented.
This is a woman whose example should be illuminated and emulated. Oprah should be interviewing her to give her ideas widespread exposure. It would be great if she had some sort of training that she could sell to others so that they could do this in their own homeland.
Oprah is in deep trouble she has done horrible wrongs
Re jumpin
That is never going to happen. Oprah is not really interested in these sort of things. There are no millions to gain here !
Main stream media is busy helping legitimise a fraudulent election.
First Ugandan I've watched on Tedx, this is so much amazing
She articulated the agricultural skill perfectly I'm proud and honoured. Thx Ms Naluyima
You don't need TEDx to get your message across. Schools and homes are responsible for that. When we get older, televisions, social media in this generation can help. This will inspire people but if they had been given this information at a young age, they would most certainly practice it. If train the children to like your products, you have customers for life. I believe the Macdonalds group said that or some big company because they will also teach their children to like Macdonalds too.
John Edmond Kato, where have you been!
@@Landez721 Preoccupied by the uncertainties of this world but here I am.
@@brendakabanda2181 I agree with you but for now considering the era of Ugandan leadership, our voices might be subjected to rubbishing and the only way forward for now is to train us the parents to transfer the knowledge to the younger generation.
I am happy for the reply, thank you.
@@jkedmond You are absolutely right. The education system we have hasn't changed a bit since our parents were in school, nothing surprising there since our foreign president isn't educated himself. So yes, you are right. We can pass this knowledge on to our children.
Ugandans are genuine and wise people
Amazing and impressive .....coming from an African woman who has integrated her native farming techniques with modern technology to create a self sustaining farming business at minimal costs. This is not just motivational talking but practical living..with tangible results. This is definitely farming God's way.Weldone dear
What is more amazing, that most people here are surprised how resourceful humans can become? All of these techniques have been around for decades. And the general principles for lifetimes. It's called farming. Perhaps what we should be discussing more of..... Why in the World is the western world and the United Nations encouraging more and more urbanization and not more small farm sustainability?
@@riversedgegoatdairy297 true. And also, in my study of African life, many African people are extremely innovative and resourceful. They have to be I suppose but ntl it's impressive.
Yes. Well said!
Truly impressive
I am awfully impressed,if it was possible,i would like to visit this farm,go experince it first hand.i would like to introduce the same in my small farm.i congratulate this family for their rare initiative and selflessness. It would be wonderful to have their contacts for our neworking and learning.job well done.congratulations!!
Very articulate, and a good voice to get the attention of the audience. She needs to be a lecturer in the university 🎓
No need for university but rather all need to turn back from those u nivrsity and embrace the way of the original Man ADAM

The power of the mind maximising the available resources, very very good and inspirational indeed 👏

Ma'am, you are an inspiration to humanity. God bless you and all your endeavors.
Cutting edge innovation and a wonderful message. This video is gold; the longer I watched, the more I learned. I especially loved the ideas re "aquaponics recycling" and "hydroponics". Nothing goes to waste! I loved her quote "whenever you lack, you think!". Heartwarming too was seeing the school kids farming, recycling, and adapting innovative techniques. I wish every 'small' farmer could see this video.
Wow!!! She was so eloquent and peaceful!! And to build a school out of the profits just shows the quality of heart!! change mindsets, change the world✨
She is amazing. I keep telling people you can grow your own food in a small space. I hope now they believe me. Bless her.
Thank you so much for this . The whole world needs this wisdom and directives in the times we are facing this is the divine way.
Thank you Lord. Ezekiel 47::12, Genesis 1:29 Revelation 22:2. Amen. Ready made "when we lack to think" and apply to occupy and lead..
