- A very frank and enlightening conversation with Martyn & Carl from Hornby and my TH-cam colleague Greg from @mactrains. We discuses actually how well is TT120 doing, lessons learned in design development and Hornby's attitude towards competition in the scale.

Martyn and Carl were great. I'm very impressed. Martyn has fully adjusted to his new job, and I can tell he has a clear vision for ways Hornby can improve. And I'm also pleased to see Carl and his team are working away at improving the quality of the products. I know their time is limited, but I think letting them talk about the products and answer questions is fantastic. It reassures me that my money is being well spent. That Class 66 is going to be hard to resist... 😅
Thanks for hosting the interview!
Absolutely my pleasure. And I totally agree with your assessment
I’ll add my thumbs up to that too. Felt that Martyn is really getting to grips with his role and indeed enjoying the TT landscape. Carl is clearly a very capable chap too who knows his stuff inside out. Thanks for watching.
I think the Hornby team should be congratulated on sharing this insight with such openness whilst obviously being guarded to what will be coming later! A Prairie and a Black 5 is on my wish too!!!!
Yes we were certainly not expecting such frank and open answers. I think it bodes well for the future.
Great video and interview. I think people (and certain TH-camrs) really don't appreciate the complexity in making and delivering these things, so it's great to hear all the details explained.
Thanks. Yes it’s a complex operation. Good that they could explain it for us. Thanks for watching.
That’s exactly the driver behind this interview to be honest. There’s way too much misinformation being pedalled as informed opinion out there at the moment.
Refreshingly honest and encouraging.
Cheers Trevor 🍻
Well done guys ..Chris Craig..big thank you to Martyn and Carl for being honest
I can't complain with anything I have here...Two years into this venture I have waited longer for Items that use crowd funding to get things into production..so what we have is tremendous... .Stu ( Lanzarote)
Cheers Stuart 🍻
As for “Craig” I think Greg @mactrains has been called worse! 🤣
Much worse! 😂😂
Sorry Greg, as for fat fingers on the keyboard on this phone..I can honestly say it was my hearing this time....😂😂
Hornby tt is helping the 3mm society with new members this year as a result. Thanks caroline
Brilliant, thanks to all involved. I was very impressed by the responses from Hornby. I am confident that TT:120 has a great future.
Cheers 🍻
great news about the new tankers and the Duchess. caroline
Fantastic interview, well done and great to see such honesty. I feel that TT is in safe hands and will grow and grow in the coming years. Thanks guys for your great enthusiasm and please do more 'Let's talk TT' episodes. :)
Cheers Rick, got some crackers in the pipeline I promise.
It's bought me back into the hobby in both tt and continuing 00 that I abandoned years ago.
Great interview, thank you all for putting the time in on this. Good to hear they're aware of the teething issues and will be evolving the products as they go to fix things that have come up. Please keep the interviews coming, really enjoyed listening to that. :)
Cheers 🍻 will do😉
Thanks Dave
Thank you everyone!
You’re welcome 😀
That was a very informative and honest interview, I'm very impressed.
'Something smaller'....... a Smokey Joe??? I hope so.
For me, I'd collect 08s all day long so bring them on! Looking forward to the green version.
I think we need a dirty Black 5 and a 37. I'd better stop there!
The possibilities are endless! I can’t say what they have mind…
Because they wouldn’t tell us, even after a proper grilling from Mac! 😬🤣
Yes we did our best to winkle something out but quite properly they kept shttum 😮
enjoyed the vid peachy cheers trev
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant. Absolutely loved this chaps, well done. Great to hear all the comments from Martyn and Carl.
😄 glad you enjoyed it! Cheers 🍻
Funny thing though… it still doesn’t attract as many viewers as someone saying something like… “I think it’s crap… it’s obviously not selling.. what a daft thing for Hornby to do… what do you think? Tell me in the comments below” 😏🫣😜🤣
Glad you enjoyed it. Thought both our guests gave thoughtful and open answers.
Its crazy isn't it. As you have probably already worked out, i am a huge, huge Hornby fan and always will be. Im also a realist. From the 1st day TT120 was announced, it was never going to be something that happened overnight. And anyone with any real concept of how the world works can see that the scale is going to take years to evolve and develop, there will be teething issues and complications along the way but nothing that is done with any carelessness or lack of dedication. Sadly, a lot of people in this day and age are far too impatient, opinionated, and unsympathetic to a company daring trying to do something different. At the end of the day, Hornby are simply a company who's employees go to work every day and work their absolute best to bring the consumer a quality product and personally, I think they have done an absolutely amazing job.
Another thing is that sadly, the internet gives a lot of the narrow-minded folk the perfect platform to shout about how rubbish they think everything is.
@@shedmouthjunction absolutely couldn’t have said it better
Brilliant chat TT you both asked and they both answered covering a wide range of. Enjoyed it please continue as you are thanks to you both
Cheers Ian 🍻
Kind words Ian! Truth is we are enjoying doing these and if folk enjoy watching them, all the better!
Fabulous interview. Thank you for sharing. The openness was really refreshing as were some of the insights into product planning and introduction. As an engineer it is also interesting to hear comments relating to supply chain and challenges of working with ODMs in the model rail industry.
I'm looking foward to some future coordinated GWR/WR releases. Dare we hope 2025/6? Would absolutely love a GWR Prairie, Western and Hymek too!
The HST is lovely, especially looking forward to the already announced 50 (have pre-ordered all versions), 37, Pannier and Castle. I'll be buying them all.
Cheers Robert 🍻
Picked up The Scotsman TXS set today from Derby today. I think it is great that I can now support my local dealer. I am really pleased with the set and the models have an impact that N-gauge cannot match. A very honest and encouraging discussion - thank you. The only problem is I will have to pre-order a Duchess now. 😎
Nice problem 😄
Hi David. Thanks for commenting. Please note we can accept no financial responsibility for purchases made as a result of watching these episodes 😂😂😂😂
This was superb. Maybe ask PECO for a Q&A and what their future intentions towards TT:120 are?
Cheers 🍻
As for Peco? 🤫🤫😉
@@PeachyTT120 When I spoke with Peco at Ally Pally they want to do more things but were waiting for Hornby to announce whatever they were going to announce. Hopefully now Peco will move forward with "stuff"
@@lukestevens8735 I think at this stage, pretty much anything Peco announces will be well received. I’m hoping for some variety, maybe a cattle/live stock wagon or a even a simple flat, as there’s so many 3d printed bits & bats about, they would be a nice “blank canvas”
@@PeachyTT120 Hopefully their chassis parts will become available as a separate item. I'd also like a ex-GWR Toad break van and china clay wagons...
Well done Gents, great interview 😊
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it Colin
Cheers Colin, refreshingly frank weren’t they?
Once again great video
Cheers Mike 🍻 are you going to the Key model world at the weekend?
Great interview with the guys from Hornby. I really appreciate their honesty. It sounds to me that they have a 7 year plan with lots of stuff coming up in the next 5 years. I like the one liner in connection with a focus on Western and Southern Regions. I am buying the Eastern stuff but I do like the Western Region!
Cheers Andrew.
Yup, my childhood wouldn’t have been complete without a GWR Prairie 😀
Just got around to viewing this and some great content Chris and Mac. Many thanks.
Cheers Taff. BTW what’s happened to your content?
@@PeachyTT120 I think it was poor so ditched it and will watch you pros instead.
@@TaffsReWorx dude… you do yourself a disservice. You had quite a refreshing style.
Hopefully you’re still building the layout?
@@PeachyTT120 yes, still building it up m8y
Thanks all, a really interesting and insightful discussion. Just a slight disappointment that my 08 decoder (when it arrives 😉) won't actually have sound but, ah well, can't have everything. One final word----CARL lose the tash!!! 😁.
🤣🤣🫣
Fantastic interview and insight Hornby TT120 what’s coming and the process involved, great job guys.
Cheers Ray🍻
Thanks Ray. Yes we were genuinely pleased with how up front both men were. Greatly increases their credibility.
thanks for organising this for us all. caroline
Our pleasure Caroline
Great video, really gives a good idea of where they want to be and where the scale is heading. Glad from their perspective TT120 is doing well.
I am so looking forward to the LMS stuff coming out, it's always been a favourite of mine.
Yeah that Coronation class I think will be a real step up!
Great video lads, cracking way to spend my Friday morning. 66 looks great
Glad you enjoyed it anthknill. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting to them both. Thanks for taking time to comment too.
Cheers 🍻
Great job lads, Well done 👍
Cheers Peter
Thanks guy’s, enjoyed that, filled in a few blanks. I am one of those who uses both scales, well actually 3, 00, 009 and TT120, all on the same layout. I use TT 120 on the fifth level, as a bit of forced perspective in the distance.
I was thinking of you Doug 😄
Interesting Doug - be good to see a photo/video of how that works.
Just been on to your channel for a look - very impressive!
Thanks, appreciate the comment. Looking forward to the class 50, which I have on order, and of course the class 37 when it comes.Keep up the good work. Will have to put something on the TH-cam channel soon. Atb Doug.
Fair play to Hornby for joining a discussion about TT120 with the fab utube guys! Brilliant stuff. Would be interesting if other manufacturers can step-up and join the party? Or, at least have a discussion with the utube chaps?
Watch this space 😜
Good questions, nicely edited and refreshingly honest answers. Great job everyone involved. Next time can you get the head of logistics and try to sort their deliveries out? 😊. Looking forward to the NEC a week on Sunday.
Cheers Barry 🍻
Yeah that contract with the logistics firm was on the list… we just ran out of time and had to prioritise the questions.
Hi both. I have had problems and Hornby sorted out my 08 very quickly. caroline
Thank you all - great work
Cheers 🍻
Great insight into Hornby.
Logistics, design and delivery all play a part. Folk don't realise what's involved in delivering a model that works, especially when made in a foreign country and needs shipping etc.
I can wait for stuff to arrive because I believe that TT is the new "Garlic bread" and the way to go. The detail, the size, the quality. It only needs one more model company to get on board and I believe an explosion will happen.
The two Hornby blokes seem informed and genuine. 🙂👍
“Garlic Bread?” It’s a taste sensation!
Absolutely fantastic guys. Well thought out questions and such honesty from Martyn and Carl. Really gives me faith in Hornby as a company. Can’t wait for my Princess Coronation! Sounds like another step up
Glad you liked it Damian. Those “next generation” TT120 designs certainly look promising 😉
Always good to get feedback Damian. Any questions you think we missed out?
@@mactrains I think what’s happening with the club is the only question. It seems to be slowly dying. No discount, less magazines. Are there ever going to be club exclusive models? I think you picked the most important questions though
Good point Damian. Will try and remember that if we get another bite at the cherry.
The trouble is , as I understand it the sets for HSTs won’t be out until Oct/Nov and by that time the Mk3s to extend it , which are coming out now, will be sold out . A cross scaler will only move when there’s a depth to the range . I quite like the HST . I could build a layout in another room , but I want a 37 and 47 , wagons and coaches to go with them before I make a move .😊
Great conversation though . Well done to yourselves and the guys from Hornby for being so forthcoming
Yeah I can see that would be annoying, but Martyn did suggest to us that with the Mk3’s being such great sellers, they’ll be doing their level best to keep the production of them as consistent as possible
I'm a cross-scaller and moved into TT120 in June 22! I did a diorama based on Peco track and was planning further stuff before Hornby announced they were moving into TT120.
👍
Thanks 😊
Cheers 🍻
Thumbs up if you're a newbie.👍
Louis as a designer is a great asset and the rest of the team. caroline
I really think he’s a star in the making
Much appreciation guys
@@Louisspurgin yay! Louis’s in the house! (Ps I’m assuming you’ve seen the special “Thug life” promo shot? 😜
What are you referring to?
@@Louisspurgin not telling…. It’s a secret…. (Ask Carl)
Regarding gwr and Southern. Those wagons would have been all over the LNER. Come on guys, just release a box van to go with peco opens.
Lots of interesting things on this talk. I really do like how frankly Carl and Martyn were speaking about what will and what might be coming up in the Hornby TT:120 range. Well played amd a big thumbs up for that 👍
As for having competitors in the TT:120 market, that will give a massive leap forward to the whole industry. Accurascale gave a kind-of test run with their development team figures, maybe they are seeing opportunities now? Here on the Continent, there are now several manufacturers with well-developed and well-established ranges besides the big one, Tillig. There are even several several double developments, for example East German classes 118 and 119 Co' Co'- diesels, manufactured both by Tillig and Piko in various liveries (simultaneously!) and are available for years now. Both brands are well-established on the Continent, np problem for them to sell their products. And we modellers get different runnung numbers right from the beginning, it's a win for everyone. British outline TT:120 is on a good way, and I see it is even getting better now.
Oh, by the way, I've tried to get hands on some Mk3 coaches at my local model shop here in Mainz, Germany. I got a phone call this morning: I am now no. 3 on the waiting list ( my previous number was 25) and their commissioned items have been dispatched from Hersden. Hornby TT doesn't sell by the shelf but by ordering via waiting lists over here ☺
Cheers 🍻 great comment. Thank you 🙏
Very informative. Thanks for taking the time to put that down. Great to see what can be done.
Hornby no Flexi Track, YET, when it comes BANG!!
Oh absolutely 👍
No argument from me either. I do think flexi in Hornbys own track will serve them very well. Meanwhile it’s great to have Pecos flexi.
I never knew I was a cross-scaler! 😂 one layout either side of the room. My pocketbook dictates I can’t buy for both at the same time but gives me potential purchases during the lulls in TT120 steam releases
You learn something new about yourself everyday 😜
I want the basics to build a an interesting layout, some shunting , more wagons, more small steam 3 or 4 era. I suppose to start with some other area wagons a gwr box van, open wagon, a southern,
Definitely more wagons…
Interesting chat. The honesty was good.
The evolution in design between A3 /A4 and Duchess was significant. I've got 1x A3 & 1xA4. I was considering buying another A3. Think I'll hold off until something of a later design that I like appears (won't get the Duchess 'cos I don't really like it). Roll on the Black 5 .
But still be fun when we get J50 & green 08 this year and Class 37 next year.
Yes, the frankness from both Martyn and Carl was excellent and a big plus for Christ and myself. We really didn't feel we had to poke and prod too much at all - they were quite forthcoming and it indicates their own confidence in the scale.
@@mactrains I’m not sure you should elevate me to that holly station (Christ) 😬
Cheers Justin, it might seem frustrating to some that they didn’t get it “right” first time, but of course that’s a pretty tall order.
Hi Chris. HST running numbers: I'm not sure I understood the answer, but it didn't sound very satisfactory to me. Problems with early iterations of products: OK, I guess there was always going to be teething troubles with the early products (Pullman coaches with coil pickups for the lighting and poor running of the early tankers) but what are early adopters to do about "faulty" products? Just throw them away and buy the newer, improved versions (I confess I have not checked the forum for possible remedies)? Train sets: As I commented on an earlier video of yours, I would like to see some train packs (no track, no controller) coming from Hornby. Quartering: What's the difficulty here?
Hello Paul & thank you for your contributions.
The HST’s pretty much always ran with the same rake of coaches, so Hornby’s argument was they would need to produce a whole new set of coaches with new numbers.
As for the imperfections in running for any of their products, in fairness to them they do have a reasonable returns policy.
What do you mean by “quartering”?
@@PeachyTT120 Quartering is where the mechanism on the two sides of a steam/diesel locomotive are offset by 90° to each other to prevent the mechanism jamming. Is there another meaning in terms of railways? I think it was Carl who said it could cause issues in the design/manufacture of models.
@@PaulSmith-pl7fo of course. Sorry, hadn’t woken up. Yes at the time, I did wonder why that was such a problem?
Great Interview & interesting to see how this develops. I'm all about integrity, fair play, balance & know it can be easy to fall from a state of homeostasis when you're in the flow or bubble of it. Maybe alternating who's channel this appears on too, would help keep you both in check, maintaining a good balance so, despite enthusiasm & all the rest, a little bit more care taken in the edit, to achieve air space is given equally over to the both of you asking the Q's for both your sakes... & you say I can talk Peachy lol. PS Knowing Carl, it was really great to hear Martyn & hear you have a good one lined up v.soon ;)
Yeah yeah.. pot - kettle 🤣🤣
Next joint interview will be hosted on Macs channel
@@PeachyTT120 You come out of the box and you’re the only one left in the band still playing Andy… andyyyyy… annnnddddyyyyy 😂 Great stuff lads as Claud Butler would say
@@modeloco anyway… when you coming on “Let’s Talk TT” 😉
(blimey that will be a colourful episode! Ps we do have some questions lined up specifically tailored for you 🤔🤣)
Hi @modeloco Andy. Glad you’re here to keep Peachy in check!! But to be fair it was my suggestion that we keep the main content on his channel. I think it’s best for the scale to have a dedicated channel that gains traction. Not that I’m knocking multi-scalers at all. We already have another interview recorded and will go out next week on my channel so keep watching
@@mactrains Takes one to know one and there’s so much division and bias out there already, it’s lovely to see some sincere unity and wouldn’t want that new shoot of growth to be upended by you or anyone misconstruing Peachy’s fanTTtastic enthusiasm as egotism. We all must support each other more than ever now and that’s beautiful 🤩
The problem is thatvthe range is so small you really need those items with different numbers, especially if they're in a set and and available as stand alone. If I buy a hat set why would I buy the same loco again with the same number. Its increasing the range by just changing a number I'd have thought this would be even more important on tt
Yeah I kind of agree, but at least they gave us an answer and explained their reasoning
"cross scaler" makes me sound like a deviant 😂😂
Yeah I know… 🤣🤣🤣😜🤣
😂😂. Hope you’re feeling better.
Better a cross scaler than a guageist!
Don't take this the wrong way but I've often felt the decor of your modelling room has a little bit of a BDSM vibe about it. Has it always been a modelling room?
@@NewModelRailway1 Well, it's always been a room from which pleasure is derived within, so... 😂
They should be perfect to start with. It's hardly incentive to buy when they're using us as testers and we get stick with defective material.
will they change/update the original pacifics to make them heavier and a front coupler?
I assume maybe one day. But I doubt that’ll be anytime soon. I’ve seen others have added a NEM socket to the front bogie, but that bogie is quite a sensitive unit, I’m not sure how successful they were. I’ve added bits of lead into mine, seems to have helped.
@@PeachyTT120 the issues you have come across, do you think they will be addressed in later gen models of the same sort
@@criminal__8615 I certainly got that impression from Carl.
@@PeachyTT120 if you are talking to anyone in hornby, what is the go with no front coupler on the j50
@@criminal__8615 that’s covered in this video
Cor dear.... talk about the questions being longer than the blinking answers!
Yeah 🫣 You should have seen before the edit! 😬 Definitely something this newbie interviewer needs to sharpen up on! 😄
Even if they just renumbered the locos in the set and kept the coaches the same it would mean they would still sell a set to someone who already bought a train pack
Yeah but then certain people on social media would unleash a tirade of abuse at them for selling an incorrect train set 🤷🏻♂️
Loco sets were swapped out all the time. Coach sets were usually kept together but they could not take out an entire train set during a major overhaul
Please send me a HST to Australia before I die of old age😢😉
Ah Mr Lotus, if only that was in our power! 😂😂
I do hope you manage to get one soon, they are a cracking model!
So TT focused on younger people and children has a higher take up with electric over steam. Wow... Hornby are learning fast. And why is he talking about 'retailers' when they now have a e-commerce strategy? This company is confused.
Acurascale are vile, they blocked me for giving feed back they've the worst customer services ever. Imagine complaining and being blocked.
I’ve not had dealings with Accurascale yet
